evacuate as firefighters battle to keep the flames from destroying the heart of the city. >> my home is burnt to the ground. >> reporter: the wind-whipped fire has already destroyed or damaged at least 1,600 buildings. in some hard-hit neighborhoods, 80% of the homes have burned to the ground. building and cars reduced to ashes, including a new school. an area gas station blew up. >> it's something like you'd see out of the movies. the bank was on fire when we were driving in. the trailer park that was there is gone. the super 8's gone. one of the gas stations is gone. >> reporter: ft. mcmurr say surrounded by wilderness, and the fire has basically cut the town in two. some resident were forced to flee to the south toward edmonton. bumper-to-bumper lines of cars moving as fast as they could through flames and intense smoke. some evacuees said they could

hear the heat from inside the cars. >> you look up, it's raining ash, your eyes are burning, you na know it's time to leave. >> reporter: all commercial flights into and out of the ft. mcmurray airport have been suspended. this morning the fire continues to burn through neighborhoods and has destroyed over 18,000 acres so far. >> the people here are devastated. everyone's devastated. the community's going to be devastated. this is going to go, this is going take a while to come back from. >> despite the devastation, so far no fire-related injuries have been reported. it was an unlikely campaign with a stunning outcome. donald trump is the sole remaining republican candidate for president and now setting his sights clearly on democratic front-runner hillary clinton. hena daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. hillary clinton and donald trump are shifting their focus to the general election. on wednesday, trump took to the airwaves to discuss possible

picks for vice president, while clinton dismissed the presumptive gop nominee as a loose cannon. bernie sanders says he still sees his own path to the nomination. ♪ with his path to the republican nomination clear, donald trump is mapping out his strategy to win in november. part of that plan involves vetting possible choices for vice president, including former rivals john kasich. >> john, whether he's vice president or not, i think he'll be very, very helpful with ohio. >> reporter: several key republican leaders including senate majority leader mitch mcconnell have indicated they will back trump. the last republicans to occupy the oval office, bush 41 and bush 43, made clear wednesday they plan to sit this election out. still, trump is looking to unify the gop and defeat hillary clinton. >> if she wants to go the low road, i'm fine with that. if she wants to go the high road which probably i would prefer, i would be fine with that. >> reporter: recent polls show the billionaire businessman

trailing clinton in a general election match-up. the former secretary of state took her own jabs at trump yesterday. >> i don't think we can take a risk on a loose cannon like donald trump running our country. >> reporter: clinton still faces a challenge from rival bernie sanders who lags far behind in the delegate count. >> we think everybody in this country, people in california, kentucky, and west virginia, have a right to determine who they want to see as president. >> reporter: sanders remains focused on swaying superdelegates his way at the democratic convention in july. donald trump is still short, close to 200 delegates needed to officially secure his party's nomination. he will get a boost today. cbs news has learned five former louisiana delegates who supported marco rubio will announce their support for trump this morning. >> very interesting. hena daniels here in new york. thank you. a bit of a political sidenote now. the band the rolling stones have told donald trump to shut it

down. ♪ the british rock group has told trump to immediately stop using their songs at his campaign events. "start me up" was a particular favorite. no comment from the trump campaign. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will have further analysis of who donald trump might pick as his running mate. president obama told residents of flint, michigan, i've got your back. in flint yesterday, mr. obama of briefed on the city's water crisis. it began two years ago after city officials in an effort to save money switched the water supply to the flint river. the water wasn't treated for corrosion, leading to high levels of lead. the president told residents he understood why they are scared and angry. >> even though the scope of the response looks sort of like the efforts we're used to seeing after a natural disaster, that's not what this was. this was a manmade disaster.

this was avoidable. >> the president sipped city water to show it is now drinkable. north carolina officials are reacting to a warning from the justice department that the state law limiting protections for lgbt people violates federal law. the federal government says the state is in danger of losing hundreds of millions in funding. the governor says the warning is something we've never seen regarding washington overreach in my lifetime. we're learning more about the final days of prince. federal agents who are investigating, they're looking into who provided prescription drugs that were found in his house. and the singer's representative sought out a prominent addiction doctor. jamie yuccas reports. >> reporter: in the last 24 hours of prince's life, the singer was preparing to silence an addiction, according to dr. howard kornfeld's attorney. >> dr. kornfeld felt that his mission of a lifesaving mission.

>> reporter: dr. kornfeld is a nationally recognized addiction treatment specialist who runs an addiction facility in california. his attorney says on wednesday, april 20th, his client received a call from a member of prince's inner circle who described him as suffering from a grave medical condition. >> he said in the motion a plan to get him to a doctor. >> reporter: kornfeld sent his son to walk prince through the steps. >> one of the staff started screaming. andrew heard the screams and went to the elevator where he saw that prince was unconscious. >> reporter: mazi said prince had a supply of treatment medications with him. >> no drugs were ever administered. there was never any intention of drugs being administered. >> reporter: andrew kornfeld has been questioned by authorities about the medication. he says they were for the local doctor and not for prince

airbag recall doubles in size. youtube gets into the online tv subscription business. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. signs of weakness in the job market and disappointing corporate earnings sent stocks on wall street lower. the dow lost 99 points, the s&p fell 12, the nasdaq finished 37 points lower. the largest auto recall in u.s. history got even bigger. the national transportation safety board is adding 40 million airbags to the ongoing recall by a japanese manufacturer, takata. the airbags can explode with too much force. they are responsible for at least 11 deaths. the government has a website, w www.safercar.gov. it will eventually allow you to see if your car or truck is on the list. next monday, general motors plans to reopen four north american plants that have been shut down because of supply shortages caused by last month's earthquakes in japan. last month's earthquakes in southwest japan killed 49.

they shut down manufacturing. the plants are located in tennessee, ohio, kansas, and canada. electric carmaker tesla has big plans. tesla says it is increasing production for its model 3 mass market sedan with plans to manufacture 500,000 cars in 2018. tesla wants to become a high-volume automaker. tesla expects to deliver about 90,000 cars this year. an offer by gannett to buy tribune publishing for more than $388 million has been rejected. tribune owns the "los angeles times," "the chicago tribune," and other newspapers. gannett, owner of "usa today," wanted to expand its network. the tribune says the offer understates its value -- in other words, not enough money. and youtube could be working on a paid subscription tv service. bloomberg report the news service will be called unplugged. it would offer customers a bundle of cable channels streamed over the internet. the new service is expected to
