right now on "eyewitness news", six people die in three unrelated fires around the area. tonight, as communities mourn investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. the fires happened in south philadelphia, west

philadelphia and norristown where a child ace monk the victim. we have team three coverage tonight and we will begin with "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh in norristown. >> reporter: just beyond the flashing lights, tragedy. >> i saw building on fire. smoke coming from the windows and everything. >> they were hollering for, calls. >> reporter: first saturday of may are in is town fire fighters responded to what would be the city a's second fatal fire this year. >> a lot of chaos. i could not tell you people were trying to get out. >> reporter: tom o'donnell says that three people including a child, died after a blast tore through this apartment building, on the 800 block of dekalb street around 4:00 saturday morning. >> semi fire on the first floor, heavy smoke on the second and third floor. fire did extend to the up are floors of the dwelling. >> reporter: five adult were also hurt with the child who officials say remains in critical condition at the children's hospital of philadelphia a. neighbor marco vargas was one of several looking on as

korean us rescued those inside. he lived in one of the apartment unit hit by the blaze. >> they were looking bad. >> reporter: as this community mourns lives loss investigators are working to piece together what sparked the flames. pennsylvania state police and montgomery county detective are handling this up investigation. we are told that if standard procedure in fatal fires like this, the fire chief also tells us they are not yet sure if there were any working smoke alarms inside this building, but we're told when crew as arrived, there were no smoke alarms going off. reporting from norristown i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". now to the devastating house fires in philadelphia a. we're hearing from a survivor tonight, and the family of at least two of the victims. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live at the fire administration building where officials say at least one of the deaths, was actually preventable, alex. >> reporter: natasha, officials have not the yet pinpointed an exact cause for either of these fires, but they do say there are very specific things that can be

learned in both cases. the sun made a believe appearance it is still a dark day, on the 1700 block of moore street in south philadelphia. >> we got the call, we came down. >> reporter: cynthia jackson's mother and her uncle john were pronounced dead on the scene according to family after fire claimed the multi unit home around 11:30 p.m. this is a photo that families shared with us showing two victims enjoying a rooftop evening. >> nothing that they wouldn't do for you, nothing for people to keep in their prayers. that is what we need mostly now. >> reporter: investigators say the home was not equipped with working smoke detectors. around 7:30 a.m., three and a half miles away, smoke detectors were working inside a home on the 4700 block of hazel avenue in west philadelphia. >> we dealt with that activation, we had eight people that was able to escape from the dwelling the. right now we have seven people displaced from the fire department area and we have four more people displaced

from the building right next to it. >> reporter: to first floor resident were rushed to the hospital where one has died. the officials say he had tried to fight the flames with fire extinguisher. >> if there is a fire, get the out first, and dial 911. you try to fight the fire you may not be successful. >> reporter: edwin schaefer just moved in the home's third floor unit last month. initially he was trap. >> i could in the go back downstairs, so i climbed down the neighbor's house. >> reporter: officials add that bars on the downstairs windows, hindered first floor escape. the commissioner adds anyone with window bars should check that there is a safety release and anyone without a working smoke detector can get one free of charge. in 2015, the city saw 12 fire deaths, that is the lowest on record, including these three, that means the 2016 the year to ace. reporting from the fire administration building i'm alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

>> thank you so much. and today, a sea have blue, the funeral for former police commissioner willie williams drew officers from around the city to north philadelphia today. current commissioner richard ross and former commissioner silver ter johnson were mourners atsion baptist church. willie williams became the first african-american to lead philadelphia's police force in 1988. died april 27th at the age of 72. and now after days of dreary, weather, it looks like we might be in for a little bit of relief a glimmer of sunshine we can only hope. meteorologist lauren casey has a first look at at the forecast. yet another day like groundhog day. >> this scene has become so familiar, the low cloud, and i know starting to effect everyone's spirits. the we just want sunshine. it is in the forecast but it is not in the scene right now. live look at center city philadelphia that looks familiar. not sunshine. low clouds. cloudy conditions. temperature not too bad.

60 degrees with the west wind at 7 miles an hour but we have not had a sunny day, since april 20th in philadelphia. that is running at about two and a half weeks time now. so i think mother nature she owes us at this point. storm scan three is showing us still locked in place with the cloud cover, a a few light showers over interior southern new jersey, up wyndmoor showers, but these showers are actually going to help us out because they are in association with a cold front that will move in as we head throughout the overnight period and kick out area of low pressure that has been stagnant over the delaware valley. it will push it east and allow sunshine to return. your race for the cure forecast, kick off 8:00 o'clock in the morning. 54 degrees. temperatures not too bad. bit of the breeze. maybe a lingering shower, cloud still around but conditions are going to be improving, significantly, through the day tomorrow, and just in time for mothers day, i'll have have details on sunshine, that we're going to soak in all afternoon tomorrow come up in a few. >> music to my ears, thanks

lauren. police meantime are investigating after a woman's body was discovered in the society hill section of philadelphia "eyewitness news" at the scene on the 500 block of south fifth street. the body was found, shortly after 10:30 this morning. police say would the man is black, she was in her 50's, the cause of her death is still under investigation tonight. and homicide detective are investigating the discovery of another body, this time, in kensington, the unidentified woman was found inside an abandoned house on the 2900 block of rose hill street. while on routine patrol police say officers were informed of a possible homicide, and we're told were to check out that house. no arrests have been made in this case just yet. campaign 2016 news, donald trump ramps up his attacks on hillary clinton while campaigning in the pacific northwest this weekend. growing rift within his own party has some wondering if he can persuade party leaders to fall in line. cbs correspondent brooks silva-braga has more.

>> reporter: hillary clinton has a new nicknamed the republican presumptive nominee. >> i call it presumptuous nominee. >> reporter: at a rally in oakland, california she warned that donald trump would use the military to round up undocumented workers and let new countries get nuclear weapons. >> and then, of course, he doesn't think much of equal pay for woman because he doesn't think much of women as it turns out. >> reporter: today in spokane washington trump said he secured his parties nomination before clinton had eliminated rival bernie sanders. >> trump wins before clinton because you know why she cannot put the deal away, we can. we know how to close the deal. >> reporter: trump still needs to close the deal with some leaders of his own party. including house speaker paul ryan who says thursday that he is not ready to endorse trump. >> it is not just because i disagree but because they disagree and they don't think he will be able to win in november. >> reporter: latest poll shows clinton leading trump by 13

welcome back, everyone one breast cancer survivor will be among thousands participating in tomorrow's, komen mothers day race for the cure, long the parkway. she's been out there, year after years, promoting the cause, fighting for a cure, for her, this journey is very personal. >> for janet el a breast cancer diagnosis seemed almost inevitable. >> my mother's fourth daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer: she had five daughters and four had breast cancer. >> reporter: janet and her sisters establish a strong family one centered around their breast cancer diagnosis and struggle to defeat the deadly disease that claimed their mother's life. janet, found refuge with komen philadelphia in 2008. she is a survivor spreading word about komen and its mission for years. >> the komen name is out there every where. and when people are diagnosed with breast cancer, they need

to meet with the girls for support, they need educational support, if they are uninsured they call komen. we're trying to be there for everybody. >> reporter: every moth thers day you can find janet in the sea of pink that saturates the parkway during the a annual komen race for the cure. thousands running, walking, sprinting to the finish line but behind the scenes a much greater need arises, every year. >> we need people to register. we have about 100,000 people or more that come out to the art museum steps, and you can go and they love to see the sea of pink coming down those steps, those 2,000 survivors but we need people to register because everything has a cost. >> reporter: cost it takes to provide free mammograms to those in need, 156,000, and counting, in komen's 26 year history in the delaware valley. the stories of those hoff been helped are never far from their mind. >> there is a young laid hoy was actually, she was diagnosed, when she was just

14 with breast cancer and when we met her she was already 22 i think. and she is still needing treatment. so we were able to get her, connect her with the right facility, the right physicians. >> reporter: komen continues to work, tackling disparities within the african-american communities. black woman dying at alarming rates in area that may be under served. >> we're looking at why african-american women are dying at higher rates. we know white women have higher incidents of breast cancer but why black women are dying 400 times more often. >> reporter: every little bit of fund raising helps which is why this years theme is year of the team. >> you register and you ask ten friend, for $10. that is $250 right there. 25 percent of fund that we get, go to research but 75 stays right in the delaware valley. >> reporter: janet is among 6,000 survivors who take place on the steps of the art museum for an emotional dissent.

the very start of the event. >> okay good but as time goes on it will get better and better. >> yeah, sunshine. >> yes. >> i know, right. what is that. >> i don't know. >> i don't know, we have not seen tonight so long. >> what is that thing in the sky i don't know. >> everyone will be confused. it will return tomorrow. a nice forecast, sunshine returning just in time for the big event tomorrow and mothers day but it has been a merky, may so far. check out our live look at center city philadelphia and our rainfall total this month so far, nearly two and a half inches. just for the first week of may. our total for all of last month, well below that at 1.75 i think we need a nice break but there are some showers, right now, very light in intensity on storm scan three localized interior parts of the new jersey. and a couple of storms coming down south of hammington. they are not moving too much. very slowly off to the east. we will see them dissipate

after sunset. we have shower activity up wind in association with the cold front but we will welcome that cold front because we have been dealing with the area of lose pressure that has stagnated over mid-atlantic keeping clouds in place, rain chances. once that cold front moves through early tomorrow it will kick that low out of here and bringing back some sunshine but sunshine has been so sparse, we know that, this month so far, zero sunny days, within partly cloudy day and we have had six cloudy days, so we need to put some numbers in that first column. right now visibility looking good but we could see fog redeveloping as we head into the overnight period. temperature right now very consistent across the delaware valley, upper 50's to near 60. we are the at 60 right now in philadelphia, some other folks off to the south, they are enjoying nice spring liken summer-like temperatures, 80, 85 in nashville. eighty in at the plant a a we will see a warm up heading in the day tomorrow. so significantly improving conditions, and early morning shower but then turn it over to sunny skies, breezy conditions with a high temperature of 70 degrees for

you and mom. future weather will show us as we head in the overnight period, clouds spilling back in once again. we could see spotty showers in association with the cold front, but tonight, and early tomorrow morning, so if you are heading out for komen walk maybe bring your rain slick era long, 7:00 o'clock in the morning may be possiblely still a lingering shower but quickly exiting off to the east, the cloud deck breaking down very quickly as well. not even lunchtime, sunshine breaking out across the lehigh valley and west of philadelphia. late brunch tomorrow, sunny skies taking over the delaware valley. looking good as we enter second half of the day this model giving us an isolated shower in the early evening hours but other models not buying that scenario. future low showing us into monday morning another round of sunshine we will see cloud start to increase once again. this had to happen as we head into late day on monday. late sunshine is in store as we head in the day tomorrow but for tonight isolated showers down to 51. light wind. wind will pick up tomorrow,

breezy day but 70 degrees and turning over to sunshine we will take the wind in exchange to see some of that sun. as we head into monday mostly sunny, turning over to increasing cloud, and spotty shower on tuesday, high temperature of 70 degrees. maybe a shower or storm on wednesday up to 73. and then really warming things up as we head into thursday, 77 degrees. there are some rain chances, peppered in there but all and all a much, much, much dryer week as we head into next week. >> i'll take it. >> any glimmer of hope here. >> thanks very much. >> lauren. >> phillies, what is going on. >> i have no idea this were on the the roll. they entered this ten day, 11 day road trip with the hottest team in baseball winning six. since then they have dropped four of five games so far since leaving bank. little will offense and pitching hasn't been great. magic number his for phillies pitching staff, and, four or more runs, and hoping to turn things around tonight is hellickson.
