than 500 wounded warriors. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. party lines are blurring in the race for the white house. presumptive republican nominee donald trump faces rebellion in the ranks, while democratic front-runner hillary clinton thinks some republicans will back her. hena daniels has the latest from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the remaining 2016 presidential candidates are making a final push for votes ahead of primaries in nebraska and west virginia. despite being the only candidate left standing on the gop side, donald trump still faces a tough battle to unite his party. donald trump may be heading into tuesday's primary contest unopposed. his campaign to build republican unity is far from over. >> i think it would be better if it were unified, but i don't think it has to be unified in

the traditional exist. >> reporter: last week house speaker paul ryan said he's not ready to endorse the presumptive nominee, adding to concerns that the billionaire candidate walked back some of his policy decisions sunday suggesting he'd be open to a tax hike on the rich and raising the minimum wage. >> i think people have to get more -- >> that's a change from where you were in the primary -- >> i'm allowed to change. you need flexibility, george. >> reporter: trump's likely democratic opponent, hillary clinton, says she's now getting supported from republicans nervous about trump's candidacy. >> i've had a lot of outreach from republicans in the last days who say that they are interested in talking about that. >> reporter: the former secretary of state edged closer to securing her party's nomination after winning guam's democratic caucus saturday. still, rival bernie sanders insists the race is far from over. >> at the end of the day, love trumps hatred. [ applause ]

>> reporter: recent poll show the vermont senator leading clinton in west virginia's democratic primary tomorrow. 29 delegates are at stake. clinton has 93% of the delegates at stake. donald trump will meet with paul ryan in his quest to secure the republican nomination. >> hena daniels in new york. thanks a lot. firefighters in alberta say the ft. mcmurray wildfire could still be smoldering months from now. this morning, crews say they've reached a turning point as they battle the flames. the fire has scorched about 620 square miles in the northeast corner of the western canadian province. firefighters are counting on cooler temperatures in the next four days. >> just embers underneath the ground there. all heated up. you're trying to get to the roots to get at it because it could ignite at any time. with this wind, it keeps blowing all over the place. >> crews think they can keep the fire from reaching nearby oil

facilities. the flames drove 80,000 people out of ft. mcmurray and destroyed 1,600 buildings in the city. there is some good news -- about 80% of ft. mcmurray's homes are still standing according to a member of parliament who toured the devastation. the alberta wildfire is so large its smoke can be seen from 250 miles up. british astronaut tim peeke photographed the plumes from the international space station. he posted them on twitter and expressed concern for those affected by the fire. there's more wild weather forecast for the plains and mississippi valley this morning. in what has been a stormy spring nationwide. severe thunderstorms yesterday doused some central and southern states. a tornado roared across colorado's northeastern plains saturday. it damaged about a dozen camping trailers, but no one was hurt. in southeastern illinois, winds of 66 miles per hour knocked down power lines over the weekend and heavily damaged

the roof of a school. no one was inside at the time, though. a worrisome midair experience for more than 100 passengers on a delta flight heading for chicago. the boeing 717 hit turbulence over tennessee yesterday after leaving atlanta. an engine housing was ripped away. the plane was diverted to nashville and landed safely. delta said it apologized to customers and is investigating. in california now, one person, the pilot, was hospitalized after a small plane nose-dived on to a large building. it happened yesterday in pomona, a little east of l.a. officials are trying to determine if anyone else was on board. and the caution, of course, is under investigation. north carolina officials are facing a federal deadline today in a showdown over the state's bathroom law. the justice department wants to know if the state plans to enforce a law limiting which public bathrooms transgenderser people may use. governor pat mccrory says the government is trying to expand

the scope of federal rights laws. federal attorneys say they won't grant the extension mccrory wants unless he admits the law is discriminatory. the state could face a federal lawsuit. a british journalised was kicked out of north korea after displeasing the regime's leadership. the government said the bbc reporter and his team spoke ill of the nation and distorted facts. more than 100 foreign journalists were invited to north korea for its party last week. the first cruise in decades from america to cuba is back in american waters this morning. the carnival adonia carried 700 passengers to cuba and book, 16 of whom were born in cuba. it was the first sailing from the u.s. to the island nation in more than 50 years. passenger said it was a once in a lifetime voyage. >> i can tell you what it's like to be the rolling stones and when you get out of your car and there are hundreds of people waiting for you. that's exactly what it was. >> though the mood of mostly celebratory, 14 people did

report coming down with a stomach illness aboard the ship. norovirus is suspected but has not yet been confirmed. norovirus is being blamed for illnesses aboard a ship docked in maine. according to the cdc, more than 450 of the 919 passengers have gotten sick since the international cruise began on april 16th. the balmoral, run by fred olsen cruises, set sail from southampt southampton, england, and will return may 20th. orlando was in no short supply of world leaders, celebrities, and champions last night as the invictus games officially got underway. with performances and a parade of nations, the opening ceremony honored wounded veterans from 14 countries, helping prince harry with the honor, first lady michelle obama cheering on the athlete and their families. >> like prince harry, i am so incredibly inspired by all of you.

a tornado hovered nearby as the teens were taking pre-prom photos, so like any teen would do, they snapped selfies with the twister. no one was hurt, and the storm only delayed their party by 45 minutes. an award-winning economist is profiled on his flight, and an arrest in the death of sandra day o'connor's sister. those are some of the headlines on the sta"morning newsstand" stand. the arrest of a man in the death of sandra day o'connor's sister. her car was struck head on by a vehicle that jumped the median. the driver is suspected of driving under the influence and was charged with manslaughter. she was the younger sister of the supreme court justice. a college football player declared brain-dead. greg bryant jr. and another man were shot saturday while driving on update 95. bryant was a florida high school star who transferred to the university of alabama at birmingham after two seasons at

notre dame. >> he was just getting ready to go back to college tomorrow. he just came home for the week, you know, to be with his grandmother and his mother for mother's day. >> the second victim is expected to survive. police are trying to determine a motive and are looking for suspects. "the new york times" reports a controversy about black female cadets at west point. they posed with raised fists in a graduation picture. critics say that aligned them with the black lives matter movement. the academy is investigating whether they broke a rule banning political activity while in uniform. "associated press" says penn state's settlement with jerry sandusky's accusers go back to 1971. that means the alleged abuse dates back 40 years before sandusky's arrest in a child molestation scandal. penn state has paid more than $90 million to settle dozens of claims. the "washington post" reports american airlines

roadblocks in austin and superheroes save the box office. jig wagner's at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. wall street starts the week after a disappointing jobs report. hiring slowed in april with the fewest job gains in seven months on. a positive note, the average workweek and hourly wages rose. the dow lost more than 33 points last week. the s&p 500 finished eight points lower. the nasdaq dropped at least 40 points. twitter could be opening a new front in the battle between silicon valley and the government. according to the "wall street journal," twitter is blocking intelligence agencies from using data miner. a service that searches its social media postings. the company looks for signs of planned terror attacks and send out alerts. the data is mostly public and can be searched by government as any user can. uber and lyft threatening to leave austin, texas, because of safety rules.

voters backed a measure that would require drivers get fingerprinted. a lyft spokeswoman says that doesn't allow true ride sharing to operate. the companies faced similar battles in other u.s. cities. takata's recall could be getting bicker. a japanese newspaper reports the recall is expanding to asia, europe, and latin america, coming out to about 20 million more airbags globally. honda is takata's biggest customer. the u.s. ordered takata to replace up to 40 million airbag inflators because of a defect blamed for at least ten deaths. movie-goers still want superheroes. that's the takeaway from the box office. "captain america" posted the fifth highest domestic opening ever. it is the 13th film in the disney's marvel series. it grossed nearly $182 million over the weekend in north america. "the jungle book" was far back

with his time in office coming to an end, president obama is making the most of graduation season. this weekend he gave his first of three commencement speeches to howard university's class of 2016. [ cheers ] as his presidency nears its end, barack obama made himself right at home at howard university. >> h.u.! >> telling the more than 2,000 graduates times have changed -- >> let me say something that may be controversial, and that is this -- america is a better place today than it was when i graduated from college. i graduated in 1983. >> reporter: he also dug deep into race relations. >> the overall unemployment rate is 5%, but the black unemployment rate is almost 9. we've still got a gender gap when a black woman working full time still earns just 66% of what a white man gets paid.

here's another look at this morning's top stories -- democratic candidates hillary clinton and bernie sanders face off in nebraska and west virginia in the contest there tomorrow. clinton says that she's getting support from republicans concerned about donald trump. trump says he doesn't need republican unity to win in november. rain is helping the fight against the massive canadian wildfire. officials say the cool, wet weather should help firefighters put a death grip on the blaze. the fire has destroyed an area of alberta about the size of houston. a startup company that makes drones is partnering with the government of rwanda to deliver medical supplies to hospitals. cnet.com reports. >> reporter: high in the sky

south of san francisco, drone company zipline is partnering with u.p.s. to test aerial deliveries. it's not just any parcel taking off. starting this summer in africa, drones like these will be delivering desperately needed medical supplies. >> u.p.s., zip line, and gavie will be delivering lifesaving commodities, medicines, blood in rwanda. >> reporter: this isn't your typical copter, it's a six-winged drone capable of carrying 1.5 kilograms of medical goods and traveling a range of 120 kilometers. an operator packs the order and scans a code that gives the drone the route to the destination. flies automatically, dropping the payload in a landing zone the size of three parking spaces. >> the main goal of the project is actually using the work that the rwandan government's doing as a model to actually scale this up global so we can do
