it's tuesday, may 10th, 2016, this is the "cbs morning news." at least two people are dead after a massive tornado tore across oklahoma with storms set to spawn more twisters today. it's a date. republican leaders agree to meet with donald trump as he tries to unite his party, while the democrats are still divided and still fighting for primary votes. and dueling lawsuits over north carolina's controversial bathroom law. why the state's governor says he's not backing down from a fight with the justice department any time soon.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. in germany this morning, at least one person was killed when a knife-wielding man started stabbing people at a munich area railway station. police say the suspect attacked four passengers with a knife at a station east of munich. a suspect is under arrest. it's also reported the assailant shout shout god is great during the attack. there's been some nasty weather. a string of tornadoes that swept across the plains left at least two people dead. a tornado emergency was declared in parts of oklahoma. at least 12 tornadoes were reported yesterday in oklahoma, kansas, nebraska, and iowa. eric fischer, chief meteorologist of our boston station wbz, is following this severe weather system. >> reporter: unfortunately, a deadly day of weather kicked off

the week here, especially across the plains. notice a large number of tornado reports. over a dozen of them. what was different between this outbreak and a couple that really didn't live up to maybe the expectations earlier on this season, a strong push of westerly winds. we had more wind shear to work with and some really dramatic tornados that formed. as we look forward, we're watching another area of storms fire up through this afternoon and evening, especially reaching down into texas, as well as over toward the ohio valley. that's our tuesday. another piece of energy is going to swing out on wednesday. we're going to watch those thunderstorms refire across especially parts of the midwest. so our tuesday outlook, from del rio toward austin, this may extend toward dallas. a chance of large hail and isolate ed tornadoes. also keep an eye on the lower ohio river valley. wednesday looks like it's going to be a busier day for us. we'll be watching places like st. louis, down through springfield, tulsa, kansas city. also be on alert for an active week of severe storms. i'm meteorologist eric fischer

for cbs news. stay safe. >> now don champion has more on the devastation in the plains. >> i'm going to agree. it's going to be at least probably an ef-2 tornado. very strong, violent winds right there the a the surface. >> reporter: deadly tornadoes tore through southern oklahoma monday afternoon and evening. multiple homes were damaged or destroyed in garvin county, where an elderly man was killed. >> it looks like it's completely level. >> reporter: people living nier wynnewood returned to find their homes completely destroyed. forecasters say millions of people are still in the path of potentially violent weather. don champion, cbs news. well, alberta, canada, officials say most of canada's main oil city of fort mcmurray has been spared from a massive wildfire, but two neighborhoods were all but wiped out. it's estimated some 2400 homes

and other buildings were incinerated. it will be weeks before some 80,000 evacuated residents will be able to return. there is no gas, power, and the water is undrinkable. today republicans hold primaries in nebraska and west virginia, but the real fireworks may come the day after tomorrow when donald trump is scheduled to meet with republican leaders in washington amid escalating tensions. many are not on board with trump as the gop nominee. his meeting with house speaker paul ryan could be particularly awkward. trump said he was blind sided when ryan said he was withholding his endorsement of trump. ryan says he would relinquish his role as chairman of the republican national convention. democrats hold a primary in west virginia, and bernie sanders is telling supporters the race is not over. thousands gathered to hear sanders at a rally in sacramento last night. they cheered sanders but booed hillary clinton when sanders talked about her support of the iraq war.

general loretta lynch took the podium to say the state of north carolina had violated federal laws. >> they created state-sponsored discrimination against transgender individuals who simply seek to engage in the most private of functions in a place of safety and security, a right taken for granted by most of us. >> reporter: governor pat mccrory filed his own lawsuit, accusing the federal government of overreaching its authority. >> we believe a core, rather than a federal agency, should tell our state, our nation, and employers across the country what the law requires. >> reporter: the doj sent a letter to north carolina officials last week and warned them that if the state didn't comply, the government could withhold billions of federal dollars earmarked for the tarheel state. that included $1.4 billion going to the unc school system. hb-2, known as the bathroom bill, said transgender people had to use restrooms based on the gender on their birth

certificate. the debate sparked heat the protests, but the measure sailed through the legislature and was signed into law. dozens of corporations condemned the law. last month, a long list of performers, which included bruce springsteen and pearl jam, canceled their shows there in protest of hb-2. madeline goss was born a man. >> we're not boogie men. we're just here trying to live ore lives and want everyone to see that. >> reporter: by one estimate, hb-2 could cost the state more than $4.8 billion in federal funding. we're now just waiting on a ruling from a north carolina federal court. omar villafranca, cbs news, raleigh, north carolina. well, the port authority, which runs new york area's three main airports, is considering replacing tsa security screeners with private contractors. in a letter to the tsa, the port authority complained about increased wait times and concerns over tsa staffing. the letter says we can no longer

tolerate the continuing inadequacy of tsa passenger screening. well, a crowd numbering in the hungs of thousands turned out today in north korea's capital. they watched a huge parade celebrating the end of a congress held by the ruling party. the congress gave regime leader kim jong-un a new title, party chairman. the pentagon says an isis leader was killed during an american air strike in iraq. the attack four days ago targeted a vehicle in anbar province. a seen your u.s. official says abu wahib and three others were killed. wahib had appeared in isis execution videos. coming up on "cbs morning news," jon stewart has tough words for donald trump. >> are you eligible to run if you are a man baby? >> we'll tell you what else stewart had to say about the candidates vying for the white house. and belly up to the bar. pregnant women in new york city

that's how william schallert described his best-known role as the father on "the patty duke show." the versatile actor appeared in countless other tv shows, including "get smart" and "star trek." he died sunday at his california home. william schallert was 93 years old. comedian jon stewart goes after donald trump and el chapo may soon be coming to america. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the associate press reports progress in the extradition of drug lord joaquin guzman. a mexican court ruled that conditions have been met, but mexico's foreign relations department must okay the plan, and guzman may appeal. as the punisher is poised to be the next president of the philippines. rodrigo duterte is far ahead of four challengers with most of the votes from monday's election counted. he made campaign vows to crackdown on crime on corruption. the news journal of delaware reports charges against three teenager girls in the death of a schoolmate. 16-year-old amy joyner-francis was attacked last month in the bathroom of a wilmington high school. a coroner said she died because the beating triggered a pre-existing heart defect. one of the girls could be tried as an adult and could face up to eight years in prison. michigan live reports that flint's mayor is being sued. a former city administrator says karen weaver diverted donations in flint's water crisis to a campaign fund. the administrator says that she was fired because she reported it. weaver is not commenting. politico reports jon stewart's attack on jump.

operation. the clothing chain suffered another big drop in sales for the first quarter. gap sales dropped 4% last month. old navy sales were down 10%. banana republic was down 7%. the company hinted yesterday that it would be closing stores. starting this summer, t-mobile customers will be able to use their phones in cuba. t-mobile, the number three u.s. carrier, signed a deal with the cuban wireless provider. beginning in july, t-mobile customers can use their phones in cuba for voice, text, and data roaming. t-mobile says this deal will make calling cuba from the u.s. 65% cheaper. and krispy kreme is being taken over by the coffee giant j.a.b. beach. this deal is worth about $1.3 billion. krispy kreme stock soared more than 24% in trading in the morning. krispy kreme will continue to be independently operated from its headquarters in north carolina. anne-marie? >> how do you say hot donuts in

here's another look at this morning's top stories. at least two people were killed when a string of tornadoes moved across the plains. the weather was so severe, forecasters declared a tornado emergency in oklahoma. the storm system is heading east today. and democrats hold a primary in west virginia today. last night bernie sanders had thousands booing hillary clinton during a rally in sacramento. republicans have primaries in west virginia and nebraska. donald trump is scheduled to meet with party leaders thursday in washington. government figures show 25% of college graduates are behind this their college loan payments, but experts say many are not taking advantage of programs that can erase thousands of dollars in debt. kenneth craig reports.
