captioning funded by cbs it's thursday, may 19th, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking news. an egyptair flight disappears from radar over the mediterranean sea en route from paris to cairo with 66 people on board. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning with breaking news. another commercial airliner has vanished from the sky. egyptair flight 804 was en route from paris to cairo, a heavily

trafficked route, when it disappeared from radar early this morning about 170 miles from the egyptian coast. the flight takes just over four hours. search and rescue crews have been deployed in the mediterranean sea. our elaine cobb is at charles de gaulle airport. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. the flight took off from here and disappeared -- [ inaudible ] crossing into egyptian airspace. a distress signal was received by the jet before it disappeared, but it's unclear if it was from the pilot or if it was an automatic signal. the a-320 -- [ inaudible ] egyptair says there were 56

passengers on board including -- >> we're going to hopefully get a chance to come back to you. your signal breaking up just a little bit. elaine is in paris right now. we'll bring in cbs news national transportation safety board expert and former chairman of the ntsb, mark rosenker from london. we know 56 were on board, ten crew members. the flight had crossed into egyptian airspace and had a ways to go before it was close to cairo's airport. it was at a cruising altitude, we understand, 37,000 feet, about ten miles from the egyptian airspace. let's talk about what might be happening now. it's believed that it went down around the mediterranean sea. i assume that investigators are looking in two areas. they're considering what might have brought this plane down could and they're looking at the search and rescue or recovery

efforts. what's happening right now in terms of this mystery? >> the first thing they have to do is find the aircraft. they'll be trying to listen for the emergency locator transmitters which, in fact, go through a satellite. hopefully that will pinpoint where most of the aircraft might be. they'll be looking carefully to find, to recover the black boxes, flight data recorder, cockpit voice recorder. it will help discover if this was an accident or perhaps a terrorist act. >> we heard from elaine. she was cutting in and out, but she mentioned conflicting reports about what's described as a distress signal. can you tell us a little about that? what type of distress signal could this possibly be? is this the sort of thing that could maybe go off automatically, or would it require the pilot to put out a mayday call? >> it depends upon what the

signal was. if it was the emergency locator transmitter, that's an automatic device. if the pilot was actually touching a button or, in fact, attempting to make a radio call, that's a different kind of distress signal. we do not know what actually happened there. perhaps we'll be able to get some kind of information from the air traffic controllers. right now, we have to find where this aircraft is. >> we're hearing that the aircraft simply disappeared from radar. we saw this with malaysia flight 370. it completely disappeared from radar. people wondered how could that happen in this day and age with all the technology that we had. with the malaysian flight, the reason was it was a very remote area of the ocean. but we're talking about a heavily trafficked area. how can a plane simply disappear from radar? >> you can have a catastrophic failure, whether it's mechanical or whether in fact there's an explosion. at 37,000 feet, that's cruise altitude. very, very few accident occur at

that altitude. less than 10%. the vast majority of fatal accidents, about 60% of them, come on descent and landing. the other 22, 25% are on takeoff. >> keeping that in mind, egyptian aviation officials have not ruled out terrorism. can you talk to us about what sort of factors may indicate a terrorist attack or a bomb, something catastrophic, like you said, versus maybe a mechanical situation. >> once you begin to actually find pieces of the aircraft, those pieces will be taken to a laboratory, forensically looked at, and you'll be able to determine if there was explosive material on it or if it came from a mechanical failure. >> what about this business of the searching, search and rescue, search and recovery? the mediterranean sea, give us an idea of what this location is like. i understand that it's heavily surveilled. there are a lot of countries keeping tabs on the traffic

coming and going there. what's it like? will it be an easy effort or a challenging one? >> certainly it's going to be a lot easier than what we've had to go through malaysia 370. with that said, we're still dealing with an ocean recovery. we're still trying to find out where the aircraft went down. lots of pieces may be floating around, and we have to be able to get to those black boxes to really get a very good understanding of exactly what happened here. >> all right. thank you very much for joining us and sharing your expertise. we appreciate it. >> you bet. in march, another egyptair plane, a-3320, was hijacked on a way to cairo. the crew was forced to land in cypress. most of the passengers and crew were released by the hijacker. he said he was wearing an explosives belt. he wasn't. he surrendered about seven hours later. the hijacker had a criminal record and was apparently having issues with his ex-wife, a cypriot. we are going to continue to follow this breaking story.

if we have any new information, we'll bring it to you live. coming up on "cbs this morning," more on the disappearance of egyptair flight 804. we'll be speaking with cbs news aviation and safety expert captain sully sullenberger. now politics and the battle over the democratic presidential nomination threatens to split the party. and donald trump is trying to bolster his conservative credentials with a list of judges that he would consider for the supreme court. greg boswell is at the white house with the details. >> reporter: donald trump revealed a potential list of supreme court nominees. trump says he chose the 11 judges based on their conservative credentials and willingness to uphold the constitution. there is a vacancy on the high court after justice antonin scalia's death, and republicans are vowing to block president obama's nominee, merit garland, to support his or her choice. trump focused on foreign policy, meeting with former secretary of state henry kissinger in new york. in an interview with reuters, he

said he would be open to meetin jong-un. for democrats, primaries set the final stage. hillary clinton got victory in the commonwealth and appealed for party unity. bernie sanders is campaigning in california, ahead of the june 7 go ahead primary. he has his own unity message for the democratic party. >> welcome into the party people who are prepared to fight for real economic and social change. >> reporter: it comes days after this chaos in nevada when sanders supporters say the state party changed the rules to shut them out in favor of clinton supporters. clinton is now just 90 delegates away from clinching the nomination. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. vice president joe biden says he is not worried about a rift in the party. biden wants bernie sanders to be more aggressive in speaking out if his followers behave as they in nevada. biden blamed the trouble on

crossing into egyptian airspace. we have more from london on the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a captain from a greek ship reported seeing a flame in the sky around the time the plane vanished. teams from greece have joined the egyptian armed forces, setting off a daunting search effort in the mediterranean sea. egypt state tv confirmed news of the missing plane moments after air officials made the revelation on twitter. the jetliner carrying 66 people including ten crew members left paris' charles de gaulle airport late wednesday night. just 40 minutes before reaching cairo, the plane vanished over the mediterranean sea. egyptian officials said the plane last made contact with ground control ten minutes before the plane's disappearance. the pilot also made no distress call. this isn't the first time egyptair has made headlines. back in march, an egypt airplane was hijacked and diverted to cypress by a man who was mentally unstable. in 1999, one of the flights

believed the plane went down. elaine cobb is at charles de gaulle national airport paris. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the egyptair flight took off from here from terminal one last night paris time. it disappeared from radar near the end of its journey just after crossing into egyptian airspace. an egyptian military unit says it received a distress signal from it. it's unclear if that was sent by the pilot or if it was automatically sent on impact. now, both the french and the egyptian prime ministers have said they are not ruling anything out, although it's early days yet to say what caused the flight to disappear. whether it was terrorism, a catastrophic mechanical failure, pilot error, or even the weather, although they say the weather is unlikely to have affected because it was not bad. france has offered to send military planes and boats to help search for the plane.

and the french foreign minister has been in touch with his counterpart, french president hollande, also on to cairo as well as the to countries working together on trying to find the missing plane. there were 15 french passengers and one britten and eight other international passengers. there were ten crew members including three skmurt guards. the flight crew was very experienced. the aircraft's commander had over 6,000 hours of flying time, more than 2,000 in this type of aircraft, an airbus a-320, a workhorse on these mid-range flights. now the jet was flying at 37,000 feet when it disappeared and was ten mile into egyptian airspace. it's too early to have an idea of exactly what happened. investigators, of course, hoping to piece together anything they
