>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> i was over water so i was a little nervous. >> right now on "eyewitness news," a blimp pilot speaks exclusively to us about the moment he realized his engine had failed in the middle of a flight over philadelphia. good evening, i'm natasha brown.

thanks so much for joining us. that pilot had to put the huge air ship down in the middle of fishtown and new video now shows the harrowing moments just after it landed but as "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff shows us, the man at the controls never lost his cool. >> reporter: rubberneckers experienced an extra strain during their friday commute as a blimp was dragged and then billowed just off of i-95. >> i knew i could land it was just a matter of finding a spot to land. >> reporter: this was long time pilot trevor thompson's third run above philadelphia in two days hadn't planned to return to where he had taken off from at kroc center field in camden. >> look, it's getting lower. >> reporter: but around 6:30 p.m. it was clear that wasn't happening. >> we were flying about 1 mile north of the ben franklin bridge when he had a first engine failure. >> reporter: the blimp or thermal air ship owned by air science and displaying adhesive company bostic was restarted and then failed again so thompson decided on

what he calls a precautionary happening. >> unfortunately the engine failed for third time when i was coming in for a landing on a field, a greenfield and the wind pushed me backwards and up a able to put it down in a construction spot. >> reporter: without full engine power a thermal aircraft will operate pretty much like a hot air balloon hence the less than ideal landing area here in the 1900 block of richmond street in fishtown. once there good samaritans jumped into action. >> pretty much stopped the car, went over the barrier to try to help the the pilot. >> reporter: personal items inside of the carriage were damaged but thompson and his passenger escaped injury. the faa continues to investigate this incident. >> people came out and this helped us and they were friendly and it was -- it was a good experience. it was a good experience in a bad situation. >> reporter: in fishtown, alexandria hoff, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> an underground explosion shut down streets in university city this

afternoon. we're told a transformer blew underground on the corner of 30th and market. no one was injured but roads were closed and septa and regional rail service was disrupted in the area for just a bit. but everything is up and running again. now, we started the weekend off with gloomy skies out there and some rain around parts of the area. meteorologist lauren casey is in the cbs3 went center to -- weather center to tell us what we can expect. >> more dreary weather and more rainfall. who is sick of this miserable mayweather sao i know i am. storm scan3 showing us -- a lot of hands going up in the studio. storm scan3 showing us the rain shield is starting to fill in now and we're seeing heavier pockets of rainfall especially to the north and west of the city, heavy 84 downpour moving through the poconos trailing off to the north and east and also heavier pockets along the i-95 corridor yellow popping up there and this again moving off to the northeast so the rainfall intensity in center city philadelphia will further increase just a bit as we head into the next about 30 to 45

minutes. so, we have the clouds, we have the rain picking up and then we have these cool temperatures. we should be in the middle 70's as far as averages are concerned. not anywhere near that. 56 degrees right now in philadelphia, our warm spot, warm 62 degrees in allentown. 59 degrees right now ac because of our easterly wind. what to expect as we head into the rest of the evening and tonight, more periods of rain with some heavy pockets of rain and then the area of rain will become more scattered especially as we head after midnight but we will keep around these cool temperatures thanks to that easterly breeze off the ocean but we are going to see that sunshine trying to peak itself out as we head into tomorrow and then a taste of summer, i swear it's in the seven-day forecast and i'll let you know when to expect that coming up. >> we'll hold you to that. thank you lauren. appreciate it. a second jewel of the triple crown gets off to a tragic start. today two horses died in raises leading up to the 141st

preakness stakes. home boy chris wearing number three collapsed and died of a heart attack after winning race number one at pimlico. three races later a horse broke down and had to be euthanized on the track due to a catastrophic leg injury. the horse was bred by the owners of barbaro. comedian jon stewart adopting a lancaster county horse whose story of abuse made national headlines. you might remember little who was shot with dozens of paintballs and abandoned at a stable back in march. she was recently treated at the bolton center in kennett square. stuart and his wife will bring little ill and another 93ed mayor to his sanctuary in monmouth county new jersey. a firefighter is injured battling a house fire in bensalem.

crews did respond to the 1100 block of tennis avenue about 9 o'clock this morning. they area tried a heavy flame on the second floor. investigators tell "eyewitness news" a firefighter was injured when he fell off the roof of the house. one person inside the home was also injured. >> one occupant was located outside with burns and smoke inhalation. that firefighter along with others were up on the roof venting the roof trying to get the smoke and super heated gases out of the dwelling. it's a common function on a house fire and somehow lost footing and fell hit the porch below and then onto the ground. >> we're told the firefighter is expected to be okay. the cause of this blaze is still under investigation. any and police have now identified the victim of this morning's deadly accident in voorhees camden county. police say the driver, 34-year-old christopher gonzalez of browns mills lost control of his car and hit a utility pole. it happened at about 4 o'clock this morning in the area of route 73 and william feather

drive. gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene and the cause of the crash is still under investigation at this hour. now, democrats hit the campaign trail today as bernie sanders tries to close in on frontrunner hillary clinton. sanders fired up the crowd today in new mexico claiming that he is the best candidate to beat donald trump in november. meanwhile clinton's husband former president bill clinton rallied supporters in california. clinton says his wife is the best qualified candidate to lead the united states. trump did not hold any public events today. president obama embarked on a week long trip to asia with stops in vietnam and japan. the commander-in-chief depend from andrews air force base earlier today. in vietnam the the president will visit hanoi and ho chi minh city. he'll fly to hiroshima becoming the first sitting president to visit the city since the bombing.

authorities have recovered a critical clue that could ultimately help investigators figure out what caused the crash. jonathan vigliotti has more. >> reporter: shredded clothing shoes and heavily damaged plane parts are just some of the items search teams have recovered from egyptair flight 804. investigators also found the doomed flight's black boxes about 180 miles north of the egyptian port city of alexandria. the data could help determine what caused the plane plane to plummet wildly into the mediterranean sea thursday morning killing all 66 people on board. technology played a critical role in tracking down the wreckage. radar on board this e130 helped find debris from the missing plane. the u.s. navy sent a p-3 orion to join in the search. the aircraft can detect wreckage from under the ocean's surface. greece, the uk and france have sent teams as well. the aviation herald an web

"eyewitness news" reporter anita oh shows us exactly how it works. >> reporter: the fire alarm at the 54 story bny melon center sounded off like it does in any other emergency. >> going to the roof. >> reporter: and on saturday morning, that was the point of the philadelphia fire department training exercise to simulate a highrise blaze with 10 victims. >> coming out now. >> reporter: but this time there was something new in play. a $1.2 million piece of technology called mask app. here's how it works. the incident commander will be able to quickly access the building's preplan which shows essential and where the hose line connections are. one philadelphia fire official called it the cadillac of highrise preplanning. >> anything that helps us save time does have a direct reflection of saving -- helping us save lives.

>> reporter: before this kind of technology fire officials had to rely on good old fashioned paper. >> you're wasting two to three solid minutes on arrival and a if i were doubles in size every minute that it burns. >> reporter: curtis massey president of massey disaster planning says it took his company three years to develop the app. >> you can touch that, bring up your shaft diagram. >> reporter: the hope is that it can be the spark that helps make fire departments even faster and more efficient. >> philadelphia was one of the first fire departments that was progressive enough to grasp the importance of this type of technology that is going to change the landscape of the fire service. >> reporter: reporting in center city, anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right. welling lauren is along to tell us more about the gloomy forecast. >> i know, i can't say i'm excited about this. i just -- i don't know. >> i know, everyone fed up at this point with our mayweather we're ready for some sunshine, some warmth. we're not getting it this evening but it is in the

seven-day forecast. storm scan3, though, showing us, yes, this trend, more wet weather for our may and the rain swath is starting to fill in and rainfall intensity picking up a bit as well in spots so it is going to be a soggy evening as we progress into the next several hours. storm scan3 showing us some heavier spots of rain especially up towards the poconos and the rain really starting to fill in in the lehigh valley now back into berks county, reading seeing some moderate rain coming down at this point. as we look at the i-95 corridor, rainfall intensity certainly has picked up over the last hour. now we've been seeing a couple of yellow returns there indicating some more moderate intensity rainfall. down the shore you're dry for right now interior parts of southern new jersey but you see showers that are continuing to move up to the north and east moving out of delaware so you'll see some of the shower activity moving into cape may and atlantic counties as we head into about the next hour. do have an area of low pressure off shore. most of the moisture is off shore with that center of low pressure. it will continue to move off

to the east and that will provide a best chance of shower activity off to our west as we head into the day tomorrow. but for this evening, we are going to see these areas of rain kind of heavy in spots. future weather showing us as we head into the next couple of hours umbrella worthy weather for sure. as we head into midnight, we will see some more breaks in this kind of area of precipitation and the shower activity becoming a little bit more scattered as we head into the overnight period but certainly a dreary day. a live look at center city philadelphia, rain coming down clouds in place. spring definitely has stalled for the month of may. our 80-degree count or so far this season is five days but we've will none of those in the month of may. our warmest may temperature is 76 degrees. that's pretty puny for the warmest day so far this month. temperature right now very cool. 56 degrees, winds out of the northeast at around 12 miles per hour. dewpoints up there into the low 50's. so, there's a little bit of hugoness witmugginess.

high temperature 62 degrees. we should be in the upper 70's as far as averages are concerned. nowhere near that. those temperatures are going to hover in the 50 as we head into the next several hours to near 60 degrees right now in millville and these cooler temperatures compliments of the rainfall, the clouds and this northeasterly wind off the ocean driving in cooler ocean air and breezes picked up over the last couple hours. wind speeds now 10 to 15 miles per hour so overnight tonight periods of rain especially before midnight. that cool northeasterly wind down to 52 degrees tonight. tomorrow's going to be a better day. still some clouds around, maybe a few spotty showers but we will see some peeks of sunshine and more mild high temperatures up to around 69 degrees but it certainly has been a very wet may so far. check out all of the days we've had precipitation. of course including today and now our monthly total is surpassing over 3-inches and our rain chances as we head into the next several days

will actually start to decrease. so, 40 percent chance of rain especially off to the west tomorrow as we head into monday rain chances start to reduce. future weather going to show us what tomorrow is looking like and we he do have that best chance of some spotty shower activity mainly west of the city and you're going to like this model data. taking a look at the jet stream, cool over the next couple of days as we head into midweek. a serious surge of warmth so by wednesday and thursday temperatures are going to be cruising up into the 80's. check this out. 75 by tuesday. drier conditions wednesday, thursday sunshine low to mid 80's and the 80's stick around into friday and saturday with just a chance of an afternoon pop-up thunderstorm so -- >> that's a sight for sore eyes. >> hold on tight. we're almost there. >> we're almost there. we're trudging along. thank you so much lauren. nasty day for some baseball though. >> imagine this is the day you had your phillies tickets. phillies playing the braves in game two of their series.
