[ screams ] >> mommy loves you. i'm right here. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it is not news that donald trump has issues with the press, but his feud with reporters reached new levels as he defended his donations to veterans groups. he called reporters dishonest and sleazy. the largest donation was a $1 million from trump's personal account dated may 24th, the same day trump was interviewed by the "washington post" about the money. cbs news confirms 32 of the 41 donations trump listed totaling more than $4.4 million. as major garrett reports, trump maintains the media did him

wrong. i have raised a tremendous amount of money for the vets, almost $6 million. >> reporter: $5.6 million to be exact. for the first time, donald trump identified the recipients and amounts. >> honor foundation, $200,000. >> reporter: trump said he raised money for veterans groups in january while boycotting a debate in iowa. >> we just cracked $6 million. >> reporter: last week he made good on his donation of $1 million. continued scrutiny led trump to divulge more details today. >> i wasn't too involved in picking the organizations other than i gave $1 million to the marine -- law enforcement, marines, they are fabulous people. they honored me last year to waldorf astoria. >> reporter: trump torched reporters who questioned where the money went. >> i'm totally accountable, but i didn't want to have credit. what i got was worse than credit because they questioned me.

>> reporter: outside trump tower, veterans like alexander mccoy, a registered democrat, denounced trump. >> what donald trump doesn't understand is that he can not buy the votes of veterans of this country. >> reporter: major garrett, cbs news, new york. several major newspapers took trump to task in the hours after the news conference with rapid-fire editorials. in the "washington post," "donald trump bully in chief." "he does not have the restraint, openness, or values." and "his demand for obeisance is alienating more people than it attracts." and "the new york times" looks at the battle between trump and a federal judge. "mr. trump again steered his pirate ship into uncharted waters, firing off personal and racially tinged attacks." >> i have a judge who is a hater of donald trump. a hater. he's a hater. and he is not doing the right thing. >> the judge is hearing a class-action lawsuit against trump university. at other rallies, trump brought up the judge's mexican ethnicity. students claim they were defrauded by trump's real estate university. yesterday the judge unsealed documents relating to the case which are sales guides on how to convince prospective to join the program. a trial is scheduled for november. the democrats are focusing on california. hillary clinton is locked in a tight race there with bernie sanders. starting tomorrow, she plans to campaign there for five straight days. she needs just 71 delegates to clinch the nomination. a sanders win could encourage him to carry on until the convention. sanders has been campaigning there for days. >> we're going to go marching into the democratic convention with incredible momentum.

[ cheers ] and we will march out with the democratic nomination. >> sanders maintains it is he who has the best chance against donald trump. folks in southeast texas say they are scared. more flood-reducing rain and thunderstorms are forecast beginning today and lasting until sunday. this morning, flash flood warnings and watches are posted for much of texas. raging floodwaters washed away a jeep yesterday north of san antonio. no one was injured. near houston, the brazos river reached a record high, and water won't recede for days. hundreds had to be evacuated. at least six deaths are blamed on the flooding. in new jersey, a baby was born with effects of the zika virus. doctors say the baby girl was born with a partially developed

brain and head. the mother is visiting from honduras. mom showed no symptoms other than a rash. the state department issued a travel warning for americans visiting europe this summer. the travel alert advises u.s. citizens to be vigilant. major sporting events, tourist sites, and shopping centers are possible points of interest for terrorists. targets could include the european soccer championship, in france the catholic church's world youth day in poland. there's been a shark attack this morning off the west coast of australia. what's believed to be a great white shark attacked a surfer south of perth ander er ter to and tore off his legs. later a shark was captured off the same beach where the surfer was attacked. the surfer is in critical condition. the parents of the 3-year-old boy who got into a zoo's gorilla exhibit will be questioned by police, and criminal charges have not been ruled out.

jamie yuccas reports. >> reporter: cincinnati police are investigating the parents of the 3-year-old boy who fell into the cincinnati zoo's gorilla exhibit saturday. police want to know what they were doing before the boy tumbled into the gorilla habitat. >> we as visitors have a responsibility to be paying attention, keeping tabs on members of our family, not being distracted by technology. >> reporter: the boy made his way past a three-foot-high fence and an additional four feet of plants and shrubs before dropping 15 feet into the gorilla habitat. fearing for the child's life, zookeepers shot and killed the 400-pound gorilla named harambe. the zoo stands by its decision. it is also defending the child's parents. >> i'm not a big fingerpointer. >> reporter: critics are questioning where the zoo didn't use a tranquilizer dart to spare the gorilla's life. animal expert jack hanna said zookeepers did the right thing. >> i'd bet my life, my life, that that child wouldn't have been here today, i guarantee

after three, three public apologies, canada's prime minister's finally off the hook for elbowing a legislator. a parliament committee yesterday decided against punishing justin trudeau for the incident two weeks ago. trudeau got involved in a situation in parliament when he thought lawmakers were blocking a vote. have you seen the british parliament? "the biggest loser" is accused of pushing drugs to boost ratings, and new trouble for ecocop drew peterson, those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand". "the chicago tribune" reports the conviction of drew peterson in a murder-for-hire plot against the prosecutor. the prosecutor helped put peterson in prison four years ago for killing his third wife. the verdict could add 60 years to the former police officer's current 38-year term. the "los angeles times" report that a tv actor faces life in prison for murdering his

wife. michael jace was found guilty of fatally shooting his wife in 2014 when she planned to divorce him. he played a police officer in "the shield." radar online reports "the biggest loser" is the target of a drug investigation in california. contestants allegedly told police that show staffers gave him illegal drugs to suppress their appetites. the show's producers say they forbid the use of any illegal substances. philly.com says 28-year-old nfl defensive back walter thurmond is retiring. he played one season for the eagles after winning a super bowl ring in seattle. thurmond is an aspiring film director. "usa today" reports that next year's pro bowl will be played in orlando. it will be just the third time since 1979 that the nfl's all-star game hasn't been in hawaii. it's played the week before the super bowl. and "variety" says mary poppins returns will reach

the price of oil also fell, the dow was down 86 but finished may in positive territory. the s&p down two. consumer spending is up. the commerce department says spending jumped 1% in april. the biggest gain in six years, especially for cars and other big ticket items. wages and salaries gained .5%. a federal court ruled that police do not need a warrant to obtain suspect locations from cell phone data. the decision reversed a previous ruling. the case involves two men suspected of robberies in baltimore. police used cell phone tower records to track their movements. the court ruled the fourth amendment does not protect information that someone voluntarily turns over to a third party. in this case, cell phone service providers. general mills is recalling some ten million pounds of flour because of e. coli outbreaks in 20 states. involves gold medal and signature kitchens flour sold at

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ in canada today, thousands of people will start trying to revive the city they fled during a wildfire. more than 80,000 residents were forced to leave ft. mcmurray four weeks ago. the fire destroyed 10% of the city's homes and scorched 2,200 square miles in northeast alberta. those permitted to return today

must bring two weeks' worth of food, water, and medicine. it is the tragic side of the carefree summer for teenagers -- deadly accidents involving young drivers rise as more hit the highway. don champion reports. >> reporter: dash cam video shows how quickly distracted driving can lead to an accident. [ crash ] >> reporter: whether it's a teen texting behind the wheel -- or just talking to another passenger. in these cases, no one was hurt badly. but teran wooldrich has seen tragic results. his teenage sisters jade and brianna were killed on a texas highway in march. they were in the back seat of this car when the teen driver looked at her phone's gps and steered into an oncoming 18 wheeler. what is it like to get that phone call? >> well, we were at friends' house. my father called. we were basically in disbelief. we were in shock. >> reporter: aaa says 60% of

>> reporter: still no swimming allowed at the beach where a shark attacked a 52-year-old woman sunday. she was training for a triathlon, swim being 500 feet offshore, when the shark struck. >> she had extensive lacerations to her right arm. >> reporter: dr. sorri, says she will survive, but a shark left a large bite mark. >> it extends from upper torso area down to the pelvis. >> reporter: a lot of sharks spend most of their time literally 100 feet off the beach. >> reporter: marine biologist chris lowe has been tracking the growing shark population off southern california for more than a decade. >> right now if i put the scanner in the water, we'll see a leopard shark. >> reporter: in 2014, he showed us how his team is using underwater drones to follow and observe sharks. lowe says the number of juvenile great whites in the area is rising significantly. they're drawn to warm water
