bullets fly in north philadelphia, after an off-duty philadelphia police officer is knocked off his motorcycle by a hit-and-run driver good afternoon, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm brooke thomas. that officer not seriously hurt and the hit-and-run suspect who hit the off duty officer has surrendered to police. >> joe hole send live at broad and tioga streets where the officer opened fire on the

suspect's car, and hit more than just that. joe? >> reporter: hey, jim, brooke, in this crash happened right in the middle of the intersection, and police say that is when the officer got up from his bike, and then approached that car, officers telling us at this noon hour, he sensed some danger. what that is, it is still unknown. but, then, that is when he drew his weapon, bullets started flying, in fact, one went wizzing down this block, pierced through the window of temple university's lobby, and went through a wall at this noon hour lots of questions remain in this investigation. >> crime scene investigators spent hours retrieving shell casings, after investigators say, an off-duty philadelphia police officer fired shots at a car that had collided with his motorcycle it happened at 1:15 lags night at broad and tioga he can exact time line every events after the officer was thrown from his bike to when he drew his weapon remains unclear. when he gets to up approach the vehicle, he believes that

things did play out here because of these surveillance cameras, scattered all throughout this intersection, on the buildings, and there is even a camera at the pnc bank, atm there. so, they'll have that in their investigation but what remains unclear at this point the identity of the man who fled and what if any charges he may face connected to all of this, and the identity of the officer involved. that is the very latest, live in north philly, joe holden, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". thank you, so much, joe. well the federal aviation administration investigating a plane crash at new garden airport in chester county, the small plane smashed into a hank aaron the airport property this morning around 9:00 a.m. unclear if the aircraft was taking off or landing at the time, two people suffered minor injuries, one of them was taken to christianna hospital in delaware for treatment. >> people in philadelphia are making sure their voices are heard, during protests at school district headquarters.

going downhill any time today. looks beautiful out here. >> that is awesome, thanks, katie. in world news, this noon, us-led air strikes continue in the battle to recapture the iraqi city, held by militants by more that two years, more than 50,000 people are trapped in the city right now, and the united nations says many of them are children. the last major city in western iraq still held by the islamic state. new developments in the search for egypt air flight 804, french ship has pick up signals that could be from one of the missing planes' black boxes, anonymous official tells the associated press that the location and source of the signal have yet to be determined. the flight from paris to cairo crashed in the mediterranian sea last month with 66 people on board. searches have found human remains and some wreckage, but the plane's flight and data recorders are still missing. >> well, turning now to campaign 2016, the presidential race this november could be a close one.

new quinnipiac university poll shows hillary clinton ahead by donald trump by just four points, the pole also reveals, however, that voters don't like either of them. both clinton and trump have unfavorable ratings of more than 50%. now, if the race were between trump and bernie sanders, the polls show sanders with a nine-point lead. >> well, hillary clinton is adding some star power to her campaign for president. rocker jon bon jovi expected to join her at rutgers campus newark this afternoon. >> donald trump answers about his donations to veterans group. weijia jiang reports from the white house. >> reporter: donald trump says the press was wrong to probe him about where donations went from a fundraising he held for veterans groups. >> everyone says who got it, who got it, who got it, you make me look very bad. >> trump says he raised $5.6 million for 41 organizations, as of this morning, cbs news has verified 32 of those donations that

with this enclosure. federal regulations require enclosures within facilities like zoo's, both perimeter fences and physical barriers. >> the group filed a complaint with the usda monday, claiming the cincinnati zoo violated animal welfare act. they point out that the zoo has had incidents in the past including one in march when two polar bears escaped from their enclosure for about two hours, no one was hurt. >> the association of zoo's and aquariums last visited the cincinnati zoo two years ago, at that point, no issues were reported. in cincinnati, ohio, jamie yukascbs news. >> well, here is something you don't want to see when you live in a dessert climate. transformer errupting into flames. >> it happened this morning, at a power substation in avondale, arizona, west of phoenix. mineral oil used to keep the equipment cool, apparently caught fire. a spokesman for the utility company says no customers were affected since the plant only imports electricity from other

sources. >> parts of texas, just can't seem to catch a break from the rain. more downpours overnight stranded drivers and prompted several water rescues. as correspondent manuel explains, flooding concerns will last through the weekend. >> roadways became raging rivers in texas tuesday. flood waterers strong enough to wash away this car with the driver getting out moment before it was swept away. up to 6 inches of rain in parts of the state triggered flashflooding, and prompted more than dozen rescues in the dallas fort worth area. >> very scary watching the water just rise so fast. >> the fast rising waters left submerged and strands in the firetruck. the river has reached record highs, the rising river forced family to leave these horses behind. >> we stayed as long as we could until they forced us to

though, guys, beautiful afternoon out there, it is very, very warm, i'll tell you that much on the skydeck, i came in sweating. thankfully, you know, we've got the sunshine for yet another day. not terribly humid, still a tad muggy, but you know if you're able to make take advantage of one of the resort towns either down at the shore towns or up even in the mountains, beautiful weather there. and really, you know, just go on out to logan square, something like, that enjoy the fountain, really looks like nice afternoon. let's take a look outside, we start things off with one of the shore shots, outside beach patrol headquarters, treat i tranquil afternoon un folding here. you have got light waves lapping up on the beach, virtually no clouds in the sky, lovely start to the day. now, june 1st is not only meteorological summer in the beginning, but also the official start of atlantic hurricane season. very interesting statistical information to share with you as we mark the arrival and the beginning of this season. would you believe it, rack your brain here, we have not had one major hurricane, in other words, category three or greater, to hit the us in the

last decade. that is a big deal. and normally you wouldn't finds that according to noaa studies done more than maybe once over 270-year period. so it really has been essentially major hurricane drought if you l obviously had weaker storms that had have major impact, for example, sandy, technically hit with tropical storm force winds, man does it have big impact as we well know, billions of dollars in damage. meanwhile this year, noaa basically expecting a four out of ten chance that we see a category three or higher hitting the us, the hurricane prediction is that we will see ten to 16 named storms, one to four, rather, four to eight of which may become hurricanes, maybe one to four every those become hurricanes. looking at tropic, all pretty quiet across the atlantic basin say for what's now left of what we are calling post tropical cyclone bonnie, so, still sitting and spinning and drawing in moisture for north carolina, essentially going to retreat out to sea sort of fizzle with time. we don't have any left over

issues with it, this next front though what's going to be our next system, to bring the potential for rain, but not until we hit, say, friday, at this point. so things looking good for first pitch down in south philly this evening, 70:51 pitch against the nationals under some sunshine, 80 degrees, for that first pitch, it is perfect baseball weather. just couple of miles down i-95, here, we go to chester where the union also have home match being hoping to keep that no lost streak going, 78 degrees, at 7:00 p.m. for kick off. and again, everyone under that sunshine for the whole rest of the day, looks like fantastic afternoon. as we move on it forward, little closer to dip call tomorrow, flirting with 80 as we should for early june standards, showers, thunderstorms in the forecast as we hit friday. that's as the colds front we showed awe moment ago moves on through. saturday looks phenominal. nice way to kick start a weekend. but there likely be additional showers if not thunderstorm on sunday, as we track front number two, in the forecast, and little bit of roller coaster here on monday, tuesday, but overall, this is a nice forecast, guys, it is looking good overall.

tunnel is complete and the opening celebration has to rang as one of the world's most unusual. >> that is a group of acrobats, and others, that performed inside the got adder based tunnel through the swiss alps. tunnel also blessed by an interface group of clergy. the 35-mile tunnel will open to commercial rail traffic in december, after 17 years of construction, and the equivalent of about, get ready for this, 12 billion us dollars. >> i like the blessing part, does that keep the bad traffic? >> i know, looks like every possible religion, my gosh, a lot of people are happy about that. >> i don't want to get stuck. >> did can we get one of those along the schuylkill, too, that could really use the help, right? until the weather department things looking phenominal. keep in mind when you have the high solar angle that we have
