"eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live with the latest on the investigation, good morning, justin. >> reporter: jim, brooke, good morning. fire engines have left but investigation continues. it remains active this morning. home in question right behind us here, you can see not much to it left. upstairs has melted siding and

charred black inside and official search for cause of the fire is now underway. the lets go to video from overnight at 2:00 o'clock officials say fire here on south take already broke out, fire commissioner tells us that crew is a arrived here within minutes. they found 1746 south take already here showing fire on the first and second levels. neighboring living in homes on either side were also forced out as this fire was for the and investigation continues. meantime fire fighters do have word of an elderly man trapped inside that burning home and he was later fund on the first floor, he did die of his injuries. take a listen. >> male was found in the first floor of the home, again, the cause and fire location exactly are still under investigation. >> and back out here live no reports of any injuries to fire fighters at this time. fire marshall's office is on the scene, this morning, investigation, it is set to continue but at this time in word yet on a cause or if they are working smoke alarms inside this home when it

burned overnight. that is latees from point breeze i'm justin finch for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". brooke, back inside to you. >> thanks, justin. a philadelphia police car has front end damage after a driver back into it during a traffic stop and then took off. both the police cruiser and that driver's 2009 altima were damage at 21st and carpenter around 12:45 this morning. no officers were hurt but investigators say they know the ultimate man's license plate number so they are confident they can track dunn that driver. sugary drink tax clears a major hurdle in city council and that means philadelphia is poised to be the first major u.s. city with a tax on sugary drinks. mayor jim kenney initially proposed a 3 cents an ounce plan that didn't include diet drinks but council reached a compromise last night. proposal now includes a 1.5 percent increase on all sugary drinks including diet soda but not everyone is happy about the measure. >> hours about a vote we find out this money isn't being ear

mark largely for our children and education programs. i mean it doesn't seem like an honest debate was had. >> you cannot tax one industry out of existence. when price of soda goes up, sales goes down and when sales get down we lose jobs. >> the tax will fund universal precare around the city and goes up for final vote, june the 16th. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao will have more reaction to the proposed sugary tax bill in the next half an hour. happening today, in campaign 2016, democratic presidential candidate, bernie sanders, heads to washington to meet with president obama at the white house. sanders wants to make sure that the party will continue to back his progressive agenda during a taping of the tonight show with jimmy fallon the president believes sanders made hillary clinton a better candidate. so far the president has neither endorsed clinton nor publicly called for sanders to step down. on the republican side, donald trump will meet with some of the republican parties

ten years, it has just flown by. >> it has flown by but the amazing thing is people still get behind what alex started. it is making a difference. anybody can make a difference. small donation, big donation it all adds up to saving kid lives. >> where has money gone over past ten years what kind of things have have you seen in this period of time. >> there is new treatments available now that weren't available when alex were alive, kids are being saved by these treatments. nice things about these new treatments is they dent have side effects so kids are not harmed by the side effects by these new treatments i'm sure you have heard from many parents as a result of the tell-a-thon, what have they said over the years. >> they are inspired by the hope that it gives them to see so many people behind childhood cancer, and supporting their families during these difficult times. >> it all started with your daughter f she were here today what do you think she would say about this amazing, i mean operation that you have put on. >> i think she would be happy to see the support but she

♪ welcome back everyone. it is 6:13. some residents are still in the dark this morning after a fast, furious storms rolled through our region. >> um-hmm, those storms also left behind a path of damage. chopper three was in cinnaminson, burlington county where a large tree nearly sliced a home in half.

this is on the 300 block of gulf road, thankfully, no one was hurt. frightening moment for a driver in camden a large tree came crashing down on their car while she was still inside. it took rescue crews 15 minutes to get would the man out. she was shaken but fortunately, not hurt. it was weird weather yesterday, katie. >> it really was. it was. actually, i got another short list of the damage that went on in my short driving, leaving the station to go home, i must have seen six different trees that came down closing down area roadways. so much debris in the roadway. these storms had a vengeance. main issue was definitely wind. trees, power outages, and wires all down, all the signs coming down in lumberton. very short list again from the amount of damage that came through, this all came because of 55 to 65-mile an hour wind gusts, more than that in some instances. it was a damaging disturbance but that is long gone. it is went right through at 45 .

jumping on the roadways especially i-95 moving in the southbound direction. this is where we have sun glare, we are seeing that anywhere, trying in the eastbound side or even northeast, a little bit you will get this. pack your glasses. boulevard headlights coming from the southbound direction approaching wissohickon avenue moving against that sun but northbound side will hit you. ben franklin bridge moving in the westbound direction in center city, let me back out of the way so you can see this, looking gorgeous, looking just like the post card it always does. we have an accident in darby, chester pike and quarry street make note that can slow you down ever so slightly. also some construction on the pennsylvania turnpike, westbound, and, delaware valley and bensalem more construction updates coming up in a little.

freezing right now on the sky deck. what happens too is that breeze kicks in and makes it feel cooler. at least for next couple hours until sun does its part to warm things up i advise an extra layer, fleece, sweat shirt, light jacket whatever you need to get you through the next couple of hours because it is cool standing out here, you know, maybe waiting for a train or a bus. storm scan is totally empty. you never know this was even a loop that was being pushed through. we will have clear blue skies. we have no cloud cover to act as a natural blanket. we have dropped down in the 40's in wilmington, lancaster, mount pocono, chilly start at philly international as well, 53 degrees and we have been holding tough at that value for an hour and a half. it looks like that is our early morning low as the day progresses we are rebounding nicely in comfortable territory, mid 70's and i say comfortable because we will also keep low humidity too. it is a nice day keep the mid

in the westbound direction in between delaware valley and bensalem that right lane is still block for those in and around that area and remind their ac rail line is shuttle busing between 30th street and cherry hill due to the bridge repairs. this is until 4:30 a.m. tomorrow. almost done there. jim, over to you. thanks meisha. authorities in berks county are searching for bad neighbors caught on camera illegally dumping trash. take a look, reading police are hoping you may recognize the suspects. you can see them pull in the alley in the 400 block have north ninth street and just unload heaps of trash from their vehicle last sunday. police say your tip can remain a in must. meanwhile elderly man has killed in a fast moving fire in the point breeze section. flames broke out shortly after 2:00 this morning. fire gutted row home on the 1700 block of south take already street, the causes under investigation. philadelphia's poised to make history by becoming the first major city in the country to pass a sugar drink tax. >> proposed tax cleared a major hurdle in council last

"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao joins us live to tell us about those changes and what comes next, good morning, jan. >> reporter: good morning. the city council was able to come to a compromise last night, to do that lawmakers changed mayor jim kenney's proposal in two ways. they have decided to lower the tax increase and then they decided to include diet drinks and by doing so, council president darryl clark says this will broaden the tax responsibility. following weeks of contentious, public hearings, inside of city hall, and testy protests outside, philadelphia city council is giving preliminary approval to the beverage tax increase. instead of the three sent per ounce tax proposed by mayor jim kenney that did not the include diet sewed, council instead agreed upon 1.5 percent tax on all sugary drinks. >> with the addition of diet at the request of the members of the council is a broader based responsibility for

funding these initiatives. >> reporter: ninety-one million-dollar in estimated revenue slated to fund universal prek and parks and recreation programs throughout the city. >> is there so much unmet need in philadelphia and we know high quality prek can put our kid on a road to success in schools which we desperately need here in philadelphia. >> many are still skeptical after the kenney administration admit that had some revenue will be diverted to the cities general fun. >> hours before a vote that we find out that this money isn't being ear mark largely for children and education programs. it doesn't seem like an honest debate was had. >> you cannot tax within industry out of existence. when the price of soda goes up, sales goes down and when sales go down we lose jobs. we lose positions out of this. >> the beverage industry all the way up until last night's vote, business owners equally word i had that the tax will drive customers out of town. sentiment echoed by some consumers. >> i will leave philly to go

money and charitable donations. political operatives close to fattah were behind the scheme and congressman had in idea. lawyers for bill cosby are appealing the use of hearsay evidence in his criminal sexual abuse case. his accuser andrea constand was not called to testify during cosby's preliminary hearing last movement instead prosecutors used police statement as evident. ultimately, a judge upheld the charges and sent the case to trial. the defense is arguing that constand should have been called to the stand, so they could have questioned her. now pennsylvania's superior court has ruled hearsay testimony is admissible in preliminary hearing but state supreme court has agreed to review the issue. well, there has been a rash of new coyote sightings down the new jersey shore, lower township resident spotted one of the animals tuesday night. she took this picture. another home owner said he saw coyoties a handful of times since the start of spring and even came face-to-face with one. >> i was just watching him

>> when i was 15 months oldy was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer, and it is one in a million. so, i had 15 round of chemotherapy and three surgeries with the final surgery being an 80 percent liver resection. so, you know, at the age of two i was finally cancer free and i have been 16 years cancer free now. >> that is awesome. >> very awesome. >> all right. >> i mean that is just such a young baby to have such an issue. how are you doing now. >> i'm doing good. >> glad to tell your story. >> the only way that i feel i can help others is to share my story, kind of get more people on board, so that they realize there is kids in the hospital fighting a battle. i want to do as much as i can to help them. >> i think that is awesome. so awesome. thank you for being here and sharing your story with us. >> we have more kid here too. we have classmates from haddon heights, high school abe i hear you guys had a fundraiser
