philadelphia. what police said happened right before a woman was flashed across -- slashed across her forehead. good evening, i'm jessica dean. >> i'm ukee washington. the schuylkill river trail has been the site of numerous crimes in recent months. this latest attack happened on the steps leading to walnut street. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos is there right now with what police are saying tonight. greg? >> reporter: ukee, philadelphia police say this all started around 3:00 o'clock this afternoon a24-year-old victim a woman was walking down the schuylkill river trail right around here when she noticed someone was closely following behind her. she decided to leave walking up these stairs right here at walnut street. that's when the suspect police say followed her and then slashed her in the face. on beautiful thursday afternoon, an ugh al tack on the schuylkill river trail. philadelphia police searching for whoever stabbed a 24-year-old woman in the forehead on the walnut street stairway leading to the path. >> it's sad. >> reporter: for many running, biking or simply strolling, it's also a reminder to be aware.

>> carry pepper spray with me. when i run i make sure check my surroundings. >> i would say be mindful of the people that are walking behind you and in front of you. >you. >> to be like this. that's problem. anybody coming up close to you, you have to be leary about that. >> one attack is one too many. so, um, it's really unfortunate. you know, it definitely -- we need to figure something out. >> reporter: that's why john lions with the 1215 group is work to go establish the schuylkill river trail watch a group of volunteers meant to keep an eye out or suspicious activity in this popular work out area. >> with thursday's attack as well as two indecent exposures incidents last month, lion says the launch of the program is being sped up. >> we're actually going to accelerate the launch of that to the end of june. >> reporter: back here live city officials have placed these stickers every 200 feet or so. they can actually tell first

responders exactly where you're located on the trail in the event of an emergency. as for that victim tonight, she was rushed we're told by police to presbyterian hospital fortunately she is going to be okay. philadelphia police have not yet made any arrests. live here along the schuylkill river trail, i'm greg argos cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> greg, thank you. a teenager will spend at least a quarter century in prison for the murder of an i don't have brook man who was out walking his dog. david spunt spoke to friends of the victim who are remembering their neighbor tonight. >> jim was very nice person. i think he tried to help everyone. >> reporter: helen misses her friend jim, 51-year-old husband and father of a teenaged girl who was shot to death while walking his dog on his street in march 2015. >> when i went out that night to walk my dog i, arc neighbor told me there were police down the other end and not to go down there. when i went to the corner a neighbor told me that jim had been shot.

>> reporter: at a feign hamilton was 15 when he pulled the trigger. he's now 17. he his accomplice brandon smith and 14-year-old being charged as juvenile were all at the scene and just picked sewell man randomly before firing. they didn't take anything. hamilton just shot, then left the scene. andre andrews lives across the street from the scene of the crime. >> he was the type of guy in the neighborhood that brought light to the neighborhood. doing landscaping up here on the park. >> reporter: authorities witness 19th police district tracked down all three kids. last fall we spoke to the officer who made the arrest at a dinner recognizing his work on the case. >> guy just walking his dog and gets killed by three kids they wanted to rob somebody. you know, it felt good to be able to catch them. >> helen has no problem with hamilton's sentence. >> he was old enough to know right from wrong. and i don't care if he spends the rest his live in jail. >> reporter: hamilton's accomplice brandon smith was 15 at the time of the shooting he

declined a plea deal. his case will go to trial. david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news". a suspect is behind bars right now in connection with a road rage shooting that happened on i-95 in philadelphia. 33-year-old anthony thomas gilbert of upper chichester is facing several charges including aggravated assault. on tuesday morning police were called to 95 northbound near the girard point bridge after a driver reported another man fired a shot at him. the vick testimony was not hurt. authorities say a tip about an unrelated road rage incident led them to him. >> philadelphia mother arrested in florida for the murder of her two young children. this is the suspect 40-year-old sophia hines she's accused of of smuggling her two children with a bed sheet at a resident's house in meara march florida. three-year-old ariel and seven month old saint leo. the suspect's husband and father of the youngest child said he's devastated. >> whatever was going on with her head washington was wrong

with her, i can't understand. i'm really confused right now. i'm trying to talk but the words are just not coming. i go to the to forgive her in order for me to get by. >> if she they will that deep, if she was going through anything, she could have left them both here. >> hines confessed to killing children. but did not offer an explanation why. in campaign 2016, president obama throws his support behind hillary clinton. today in a three minute web video, the president officially endorsed presumptive democratic nominee. their first joint appearance will be in green bay, wisconsin next wednesday. the president calls clinton the most qualified person ever to run for the white house. i've seen her judgment. i've seen her toughness. i've seen her commitment to our values up close i'm with her. i am fired up and i cannot wait to get out there and campaign for hillary. >> before making the endorsement the president met with clinton's rival bernie sanders at the white house. but sanders still sounded like a

presidential candidate at his campaign rally in washington, d.c. tonight. >> what seems radical today will seem main stream tomorrow if we stand together and make those changes. >> meanwhile, presumptive republican nominee donald trump spent the day meeting with a donors and republican leaders. he mocked the president's backing of clinton tweeting, obama just endorsed crooked hillary. wants for more years of obama but nobody else does. the clinton campaign tweeted back telling trump to delete his account. clinton's tweet to trump was retweeted 130,000 times in about an hour. that's the most retweeted tweet of the campaign thus far. thousands of mourners join the family of hmm ali today for a muslim prayer service in his hometown of louisville, kentuc kentucky. it was the first of two large memorials planned for the legendary boxer and global icon of the inter faith service will

sunrise as the sound of ringing phones began lighting up the cbs studios great haul. >> as always, the nurses from chop are here. thank you very much. folks are being they always start things off. >> scores of volunteers trickled in throughout the day. honoring the memory of little girl who started it all. cbs3 and the cw philly were proud to host the tenth annual alex scott "a stand for hope" telethon. alex's lemonade stand began in 2000 sand when four-year-old al allegation ex scott announced she wanted to host a lemonade stand in her front yard. raising money in the fight against childhood cancer. the young cancer patient wanted to take a stand against deadly disease that would later claim her life. >> maybe we can really find a cure. >> our good friend pat chiarocchi returned to help in the fundraising effort. keeping the phones rinking. keeping the donations rolling in. >> $56,856. >> as of 10:00 a.m., $2 million had already been raised. >> as the day progressed hope

grew in the faces of the children and families alex lemonade foundation has helped like 184 old baby bacon whose ready for prime time. >> loveable. he loves everybody. >> when you look around, and you think of the 10 years -- >> while the event has raised millions since its inception what means most to liz and jay scott and their family is how this all started with their daughter, a fearless little girl with big dreams who became a catalyst for change nationwide. >> it's about the progress we've made over the past 10 years. finding new cures. finding new treatment. the fact there are families here now whose children have been diagnosed in those 10 years and cured. >> it is 10 years on air the alex lemonade stand raised more than phone million dollars in the fight against pediatric cancer. we are so happy to be a part of that and this is just the beginning actually this is the beginning of lemonade days from june 10th through june 12th. it's a three-day event throughout this weekend where

clear sky and less wind means it may even actually end up being a couple of degrees cooler than last night probably right about the same low 50s in the city. right around 50 degrees in the suburbs. storm scan3 shows clear skies that's what we saw all day long. that's still the case outside at the moment as we zoom out, you can see not a whole lot going on. our next system missing us to the south all the way up portions of canada and northern planes our next system a warm front that eventually will develop as we head into saturday and bring us the chance for a thunderstorm possibly even a severe thunderstorm. in the meantime we're seeing temperatures drop pretty quickly now as we head through the overnight hours. 67 at the moment in philadelph philadelphia. 62 in reading. 61 in allentown and we're already down to 58 in atlantic city. dew point wise that was the big story today. dew point today's were in the 30s and 40s. that's where they are still. the current dew .41 and in the summer this is the scale we use for dew points. 50 degrees awesome. we're not even at 50 degrees. we're in the 40s and that's where we'll be tomorrow so

expect it to feel fantastic. wee get right up into that humid range again, though, as we head into the upcoming weekend. let's take look at future weather. this will show you what we're looking forward to or looking ahead to i should say as we head toward the weekend. notice tomorrow completely clear sky. blue sky, sunshine beautiful d day. saturday starts off with sun, then clouds filter in the in there an noon get these pop you have up thunderstorm. they're not everywhere. but they will be locally strong possibly even severe anyone of these little storms that bubbles up late saturday afternoon into saturday evening. so you're outside enjoying the sun by the pool or having a barbecue with the family, keep an eye to the sky because even though these storms aren't everywhere some spots could see damaging winds and we'll be in slight risk for severe weather as we head into saturday. so again we're looking at hit or miss storms 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with strong gusty winds. and hail possible late saturday. in the meantime clear and cool overnight at 53. your friday is beautiful. low humidity, 79 degrees. 78 down the shore with sunshine.
