little body was pulled from a lake at disney world after an alligator snatched him from his father's arms. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the massacre in orlando spurred one frustrated democratic lawmaker to demand action on gun control. senator chris murphy of connecticut started his filibuster yesterday morning. continued through the night, lasting nearly 15 hours, and it ended early this morning. >> i've had enough of the ongoing slaughter of innocents, and i've had enough of inaction in this body. >> reporter: in the wake of the orlando shooting and invoekting the sandy hook elementary shooting, murphy want action on two fronts -- a ban on the sales of guns to people the government suspects of being terrorists. >> our thoughts and prayers are

no longer enough. >> reporter: orlando gunman omar mateen legally bought guns even though he had been on and off the terror watch list twice. >> when you attack one american, you attack us all. >> reporter: currently it's illegal for felons, fugitives, illegal immigrants, or juveniles to buy guns, but not suspected terrorists. democrats are also calling for universal background checks for gun buyers. >> we've been bystanders in this body. we've been bystanders in this nation as this carnage of gun violence has gone from one tragedy to the next. >> reporter: it's been nearly ten years since 32 people were killed boy a gunman at virginia tech. and that was the last time congress made any significant change to federal gun laws. >> it is so damaging to this country to leave people exposed to this potential terror, but it is also damaging to the reputation of this body which is about as low as you can get.

>> reporter: members of both parties want a solution. >> let's get to work here. let's sit down together and figure out how we achieve this because i think everybody ought to be in agreement in principle. we don't want terrorists to be able to walk into a gun store and buy a gun. >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says that he may be open to serious suggestions on gun control. earlier efforts to create a compromise appeared to have collapsed. and we will talk with senator chris murphy about his efforts toward gun control. that is coming up on "cbs this morning." the debate over gun control has been a key issue on the campaign trail. the democrats have an unlikely ally, donald trump, who says he's ready to consider stricter laws. the republican majority in the congress of the suds a wholly owned subsidiary of the national rifle association.

>> reporter: donald trump tweeted that he want to meet with the mooar in discuss the issue. house republicans in favor of the bill say it could make a difference. >> if donald trump gets involved, that could give enough republicans cover to at least allow it to come to the house for a vote. >> reporter: hillary clinton is calling on congress to go a step further, she wants to reinstate the assault weapons ban, signed into law by her husband in 1994 and expired in 2004. a new cbs news poll shows growing support to ban assault weapons, up 13 points since last december. >> we do need to stop terrorists from getting their hands on the tools to carry out attacks so easily. >> hillary clinton essentially wants to abolish the second amendment. it is under siege, and we're going to protect it. >> reporter: adam may for cbs news, the white house. the orlando gunman, omar mateen, apparently made a series of facebook posts before and during his attack. in one he raged against the filthy ways of the west.

cbs news has learned mateen's wife bought ammunition with him and possibly cased the club with him, as well. and president obama will visit orlando today. kenneth craig is in orlando. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is just one of the many memorial service across the city. and -- many memorials across the city. and the city hurting in ways that are difficult to put into words. later the president will let orlando know it's not alone. fbi investigators are methodically piecing together omar mateen's movements leading up to the deadly shooting rampage inside the pulse nightclub in orlando. a former co-worker said mateen was a ticking time bomb. >> omar was a deeply disturbed man. he was full of hate. full of rage. >> reporter: in an ominous facebook post minutes before the attack, the shooter wrote, "you kill innocent women and children by doing u.s. air strikes. now taste the islamic state vengeance." cbs news sources say mateen's

wife, noor salman, knew her husband was planning the attack. she also drove with him to stake out the gay club. >> at the end of all of our interviews, however long it takes, if someone is to be charged in this investigation, we will bring them to just. >> reporter: president obama and vice president biden will arrive in orlando later today meet with survivors, first responders, and families of the victims killed in the attack. the first funeral service for one of the shooting victims was held yesterday. in orlando, family and friends remembered 40-year-old javier jorge reyes. those who knew him called him a fun, free spirit. dozens gathered across the street to show support. one held a sign that said, "orlando loves you." during my time here i met a man who lives just four doors down from pulse. he told me sometimes he used to be annoyed by the loud noise and sounds coming from the club. he told me last night if he had one wish, it would be to hear that all over again. >> i can only imagine.

kenneth craig in orlando, thank you very much. also out of the orlando area, an autopsy will be performed on 2-year-old lane graves. he is the little boy who was dragged from a walt disney world beach by an alligator. search crews found his body yesterday in it six feet of water not far from where he was last seen. we have the report. >> reporter: after mounting a massive search by air and along the shore, authorities say the body of a toddler snatched by an alligator at a disney record -- disney resort has been found. >> there's no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligator. >> reporter: investigators say the child, lane graves of elk horn, nebraska, was with his parent and sibling playing in shallow lake water at the grand floridian when the alligator attacked. the boy's father tried desperately to fight off the alligator but could not save him. >> of course the family was distraught, but also i believe

somewhat relieved that we were able to find their son with his body intact. >> reporter: the sheriff said it was a tough message to deliver to the family. he was asked to pass on their thanks. >> they do appreciate all of the prayers that have gone forward. >> reporter: the search for the alligator will continue. >> there is a good chance we already have the alligator. we're going to go through the process and forensics and make certain. if we can't get a certain match, we'll continue to look for alligators. >> reporter: no swimming signs were posted in the area of the attack. many are questioning whether more needs to be done to prevent this from happening again. cbs news, lake buena vista, florida. so far five alligators were found in the seven seas lagoon and euthanized. the captain leading the fight against a california wildfire says the blaze has blown up. the sherpa fire is now scorching nearly two square miles in a canyon north of santa barbara. the fire is out of control as it

moves southeast toward the ocean. the fire broke out early yesterday afternoon. the nearby freeway is closed, and evacuation orders went out to ranches and campgrounds in the area. the governor of new mexico declared a state of emergency as an out-of-control wildfire gained ground and forced evacuations. the so-called doghead fire is burning in the mountains southeast of albuquerque. it began tuesday afternoon and quickly spread. at least 2,000 acres have burned. the national guard has been put on standby. egyptian officials say they have located the main wreckage from the egyptair plane that crashed in the mediterranean last month. the wreckage is located between the greek island of crete and egyptian coast. 66 people died in the crash. until now only small pieces of the plane have been recovered. the cause of the crash has yet to be determined. and coming up on the "morning news," a look at oscar

orlando shooting victim received an outpouring of support while heading for his funeral on jetblue. flight attendants asked passengers to console the grandmother of luis omar culpa. one of the attendants tells what happened on facebook. "as we deplaned, every single person stopped to offer their condolences. some just said they were sorry, some touched her hand, some hugged her, some cried with her. but every single person stopped to speak to her." a courtroom got a rare look at amputee runner oscar pistorius without his prosthetic legs. and key testimony from a medical examiner in the freddie gray

case. those are some of the hoinz on the "morning newsstand." the "baltimore sun" reports the closing of the case against the police officer in the death of freddie gray. prosecutors say he gave gray a rough ride in a police van last year. the medic who treated gray testified yesterday that she questioned the methods of the arresting officers, adding an expletive. >> the fact that she sort of said what the "f" have you done i don't think should be presumed in any way to mean they had done something. >> gray died of a broken neck several days after his arrest. goodson's lawyers will open their defense this morning. "usa today" reports a dramatic courtroom demonstration by olympian oscar pistorius in his murder case. he removed his prosthetic legs yesterday to show a south african judge his vulnerability without them. pistorius killed his girlfriend in 2013 saying he thought she was an intruder. he will be sentenced july 6th. and "women in the world"

december. stocks on wall street lower for the fifth straight day. the dow dropped 34, the s&p fell 3, the nasdaq finished 8 points lower. the electric carmaker tesla is opening a store inside nordstrom. the new outpost is a 400 square-foot area at nordstrom at a high-end shopping mall in los angeles. the store is staffed by tesla employees. tesla sells its cars directly to the public instead of through a group of independent dealerships. some states have laws that prevent automakers from selling cars directly. spacex says its falcon 9 rocket crashed while trying to land because of an engine problem. the rocket crashed wednesday while trying to land on an ocean barge. it had just launched two satellites from cape canaveral. the crash comes after three successful landings. spacex is working to reuse boosters to save money. >> too bad. they were on a roll. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange, thanks a lot.
