hot, dry conditions, even triple-digit flurs some places are, fanning at least a dozen large fires. north of los angeles, santa barbara county is under a state of emergency. the so-called sherpy fire has destroyed. >> reporter: lighter winds allowed crews to perform burn-out operations just north of santa barbara late friday night. they're trying to create a buffer zone between drought-dry brush and hundreds of threatened homes before the same strong winds that pushed flames on to california's main coastal highway earlier this week return. santa barbara county fire chief eric peterson says firefighters are also dealing with extreme heat. >> we've got a hard sunday and monday in front of us, potentially. but i am confident at this point that everything that can be done is being done. >> reporter: the county is home to a billion-dollar acculture industry. er pat brown watched as the fire consumed hundreds of acres of

his pasture land. did you feel like you were in danger? >> nottality that point. the but i knew that was coming. there was no doubt in my mind it was bat bad. >> reporter: smoke from the santa barbara fire has now reached los angeles county, prompting air quality advisories. >> everything looks sort of cloudy and kind of beige. you couldn't see the mountains on the horizon or anything. it was really, really bad. >> reporter: among the other major fires burning in the west, a 17,000-acre fire has destroyed at least two done homes near albuquerque, new maex. and in arizona, the cedar fire has scorched over 12,000 acres. despite the threat, rancher pat brown is grateful that so far, firefighters have been able to save his property. >> you guys you don't know, putting their life on the line, put out a hot spot. didn't even see the guy's face, but i'm thankful. >> reporter: as temperatures rise, the smoke behind me is likely to become more intense. reena, this is just day one of a heat wave that's expected to bring record temperatureses over the next few days.

>> ninan: teri okita, thanks. of the 53 people injureded inede orlando nightclub massacre last weekend, 19 remain in the hospital, four in critical condition. funerals were held today for nine victims. jamie yuccas has our report. >> reporter: the city of orlando is starting to say gone to the 49 victims lost in the pulse nightclub shooting. howard kornfeld went to the club with his girlfriend so she could teach him how to latin dance. connell wanted to be a firefighter. today at a service, fire department paramedic lori clay present aid helmet with corey's name on it. >> corey was the kind of guy you wanted to work side by side with. >> reporter: a handful of protesters from the westboro baptist church showed up to disrupt the funeral for juan ramon guerrero, and his boyfriend, christopher "drew" leinonen. ♪ i once was lost >> reporter: but drowning out the protesters in front of the cathedral of st. luke were

hundred of supporters of the l.g.b.t. community, including ret. >> don't understand the hate. but i embrace the love. >> reporter: cost iewmed angels from a local theater company created a barrier to shield family members from the anger. >> i'm not even looking over there. whenever one of us needs help, we all band together. >> reporter: orlando florist in bloom was able to get enough financial support from 38 states to provide arrangements for of victims' service. owner sally kobylinski. >> so i reached out to that group of florist friends and said, "would you please partner with me and have us love these people in a relevant way?" and immediately, the response was yes. >> reporter: they provided flowers to 42 victims so far, including coordinating with businesses in puerto rico. that country was home to 23 victims, almost half of those lost in the mass can kerr. angel candelario pardo was layed

to rest there today. his mother cried over the loss of her 28-year-old son. at the florida funeral for victim jean mendez, two sheriffs deputies on motorcycles were hit when an impatient driver tried to get around the procession. the deputy should be okay. reena, tonight, a moment of silence will be held 49 minutes in to the orlando city soccer game in remembrance of the victims. >> ninan: can jamie yuccas in orlando, thank you. investigators continue to look into orlando gunman omar mateen's past and whether his wife played a role in the attack. now david begnaud has the story of a woman who claims she was stalked by mateen. >> reporter: we'll call her marie to protect her privacy sheerk requested we not use her real name. marie claims to have first met omar mateen in 2011 at a courthouse in port st. lucie, florida, where mateen was working as a security guard. >> the way i met him, walking into a courthouse, he held my keys as i walked in. he didn't want to give them back

to me, and he said, "i want to date you." and i said, "give me my keys." he gave me my keys, and i went about my business. i twiewkd my car. i was going to open the door, and he held the door shut so i wouldn't open it. and he looks at me in my face, in my eyes, and he says, "i want to go out with you, and you are going to be mine." and i said, "no, i'm not. get out of my face." he says, "are you going to be mine. you watch. are you going to be mine." >> reporter: and then what happened at walmart. >> at walmart, i was one night i went in with my daughter, and i was kneeling looking at something, and he kicked me. i looked up to him and i said, "don't you ever kick me again." >> reporter: he came out of nowhere. >> he came out of nowhere. >> reporter: you just blew it off as an obsessed guy. >> yes. >> reporter: and you never thought, "i ought to call the police." >> no, i wasn't afraid of hem outside. there was no way he would see me out unless he saw me at walmart. and at the courthouse, that's the only places i would

frequent. >> reporter: marie estimates omar mateen would have contacted her as many as 30 times over a three-year period weapon. we have not been awbl to independently cooperate her story but we have no reason to believe it's not true. there is at least one other woman who came forward telling the associated press, she, too, was stalked by mateen. >> ninan: police rescued a dozen girls from a house of horror in pennsylvania. a man is under arrest accused of keeping the girls in his home in the town of feasterville. >> reporter: the girls raifnl in age from eight to 14 years old. there are allegations tonight the oldest victim was handed over to the suspect, lee kaplan, by her own parentation, way to pay off a debt to him. according to the criminal complaint, the 18-year-old victim is also said to be the mother of two ghirlz fathered by the suspect. investigators say kaplan began havingaise sexual relationship with the victim when she was 14. he is under arrest, and his bail

has been set at $1 million. as for the girl's parents, dan val and savilla stoltzfus, they live in pennsylvania's amish community. they, too, have been arrested with bail set at $1 million each. police say the father told them he thought gifting his daughter was legal after doing online research. jen betz air, woman who lives near the home, called police after growing suspicious of activity at the house, a phone call that eventually led to their rescue. >> just made the call. i don't know, just an instinct. you notice these little children, little girls, only little girls, and they would be outside very sporadically. very rarely you would see one or two. >> reporter: the victims had no birth certificates and were not enrolled in any of the local schools there. the girls are now in the state's care. police haven't said anything about their condition but police have brought in an expert on amish culture to help interview the the girls. >> ninan: turning to the race

for president, donald trump campaigned in nevada and arizona today. anti-trump demonstrators took to the street in triple-digit heat to protest against him. here's jerick julianna goldman. >> and we're going to beat hillary, and it would be helpful if the republicans could help us a little bit, you know, okay? >> reporter: at his las vegas rally, donald trump said it's time for republicans to rally around him. trump noted he spent the last few days raising cash forever the party to defeat hillary clinton in november and attempts to deny him the nomination at next month's convention would be illegal. >> now you have a couple guys that were badly defeated and they're trying to organize may go of maybe a little bit of a delegate revolt. who are they going to pick? i beat everybody. but i don't mean beat. i beat the hell out of them. >> reporter: in the wake of his response to the orlando terrorist attack, the presumptive nominee is once

again under fire from republicans. >> this is a very strange situation. >> reporter: in an interview with "meet the press" paul ryan said he won't tell house members whether or not to support trump. >> the last thing i would do is tell anybody to do something contrary to their conscious. >> reporter: recent polls show trump's favorability ratings plummeting, including one showing 70% of americans have an unfavorable view of him. as usual, trump is brushing off the negatives. >> we have by far the most loyal followers, by far. >> reporter: hillary clinton is not campaigning this weekend. reena, the family announced that daughter chelsea gave birth today to her second child air, boy named aidan. >> ninan: julianna goldman in washington. thank you, julianna. donald trump will be among john dickerson's guest on "face the nation," along with wayne lapierre of the national rifle association, california senator dianne feinstein, and u.s. attorney general loretta lynch. authorities in belgium charged three people suspected of planning new terror attacks. dozens of homes were raided

overnight. belgium remains under its second highest terror alert since the march attacks which left 32 people dead. former egyptian president mohammed morsi was sentenced to life in prison today for leading the muslim brotherhood air, group now considered unlawful in his country. the judgment is largely symbolic. morsi had already been sentenced to death on separate charges. he was ousted by the current military regime in 2013. the murder of a british member of parliament sent shockwaves through england this week. the accused gunman was in court today. jonathan vigliotti is following the story. >> reporter: police escorted 52-year-old thomas mair to court this morning after charging him overnight with murder. the judge asked his name and mair responded, "my name is death to trailtors. free them for britain," an apparent reference to the bitter campaign over whether the u.k. should leave the european union. police say mair shot and stabbed jo cox while leaving a meet with constituents thursday afternoon.

one eyewitness told a local newspaper during the attack mair shouted, "britain first," the name of the anti-immigrant far right group. mair reportedly had ties to a neonaughty group in the u.s. along way history of mental illness. today, cox's family visited a memorial close to where she was killed, and spoke for the first time of the brutal attack. >> for now, our family is broken. but we will mend over time. and we will never let jo leave our lives. >> desperate syrian families. >> reporter: cox joined parliament last year and was an ardent defender of the right of refugees. she was also a fierce campaigner for the u.k. to stay in the e.u.. the divisive referendum supfor a vote next week. reena, mair was remanded into custody today until his next appearance in a london criminal court on monday. awe psychiatric report has also been requested. >> ninan: thank you, jonathan. three crew members from the

years into syria's civil war. dictator bashar al-assad still remains in power. now 51 dip lothe mats at the u.s. state department have signed a classified memo. they want to see airstrikes against the syrian government. as margaret brennan reports, it's an extraordinary challenge to the administration's policy on syria. >> reporter: with nearly 500,000 dead and thousands of refugees fleeing for their lives, the diplomats say it's clear that u.s. policy has failed and call for air strikes against the syrian regime. written by career diplomats, the memo argues that it's impossible to end the war without descrieg descroig syria's artillery and airpower. president bashar al-assad, they say, has faced no consequences for his brutality. and he has thrived as the u.s. has shifted its priorities to fighting isis instead of the regime. the call for radical change comes as assad ignored a u.s.-brokered cease-fire and
