before they took action on thursday. good evening i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. the neighbor says he filed an official report with the local authorities. he spoke with "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh today who joins us live in feasterville with more of his story. also the response from police at this point. anita? >> reporter: well, good evening, natasha. that neighbor tells me he didn't know exactly what was going inside that home. he did become suspicious and contacted police more than a year ago. we now know that investigators discovered a dozen young girls living in the basement of that home on air mattresses and tonight that neighbor wonders why it took so long for investigators to step in. >> boarded up windows and overgrown yard, tall fencing to much of this home seems to declare privacy. >> it's strange. >> reporter: what neighbors didn't know was why until now t. >> they were off the grid. nobody ever knew about them. >> reporter: in the basement, authorities found 12 young

girls, the youngest only six months old. hiding in a chicken coupe. none were enrolled in school and police have not found birth certificates for any children. >> i had no idea there was 12 girls living in there. he only let three out at a time. even that was very limited. >> i waved one time. they put their head down walked away. i thought something is off. >> reporter: more than a year ago, neighbor says he sat down with southampton police and reported strange activity at his home, including daily trash burning in the yard. he says he also mentioned glimpsing a few younger you don't know girls in long addresses. >> reporter: what he didn't know was the homeowner fathered two children with the edlest girl now 18. police say she was 14 when she first became pregnant. kaplan now face as multitude of charges including sexual assault. >> mr. kaplan had her living there as some kind of repayment for financial situation. >> reporter: more bizarre, authorities say the girls' parents admitted to give thing

their girls in exchange for financial. they thought it was legal. >> this could have been stopped a year ago. >> reporter: why didn't authorities act sooner. >> what kind of call they saw amish people? that's the calls we got. went get child abuse calls. unless i have substantial evidence to get a warrant, we can't go in. >> reporter: police believe all of those children were originally from the amish community in lehigh county. it's not clear if the ten other children found inside the home are also related. meantime kaplan and the girls parents remain in county jail on $1 million bail each. live in feasterville i'm anita oh cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> thank you very much. we have breaking news right now. a fire in philadelphia strawberry mansion neighborhood. north napa street after 4:30

this afternoon. this eyewitness video shows firefighters working to put those flames out. it has been knocked down at this point. no word on cause or victims. today markses one week since the orlando night club shooting. as authorities prepare to release 911 transcripts of shooter omar mateen talking with negotiators. on cbs3 "face the nation," loretta lynch says partial transcripts of those calls will be released tomorrow. meantime people continue to gather across orlando to pay their respects to the victims. 49 crosses line one city block in honor of those killed and one revolve says she came by to remember those lost and also the others still recovering. >> it's always tragic when something like this happens but when it's so close to home and it's -- this wasn't just seen on any night club. this was a place i used to go to and spend my saturday and friday

nights. celebrating life and love. it's just -- it really hit home for me. >> in philadelphia, the archdiocese is holding a mass in memory of the orlando victims. "eyewitness news" reporter trang do. is live outside the cathedral before a sill ca saint peters and paul. >> reporter: it started right at 6:30 and parishionerers will pray for the victims of the orlando massacre as wells their families in this time of mourning. this mass will pay special attention to local victim murray at 18 years old. she was the youngest victim in the shooting, in orlando on a family vacation. she was an honor student and a basketball star who just graduated from west catholic prep two weeks. the school held its own vigil for her on wednesday night. and people here attending this mass say it's their honor and their duty to pray for the victims. >> it's to honor. it's to honor for the victims. i mean, very sad to hear it. but it's an honor to have this

plunges into the delaware prompting an hour's long search for driver in this case. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio takes us to the scene in south philly. >> it's unbelievable. it's unreal. >> he was waiting here at a stop light at it says of south columbus boulevard and oregon avenue just before 3:00 a.m. sunday morning. >> i was sitting we're at the light at the intersection. a car comes flying by. not sure of the model. >> reporter: moments later, a crash. >> i looked over and seen the gate missing. i heard a splash. i told my friend, somebody just went into the water. he ran to the water to help. >> the fender was hanging off over there. everything. and there was nothing in the water. >> he dialed 911. police, fire and marine units arrived and took divers minutes

to locate the silver buick suv. they hauled it out with twisted metal and a busted windshield, police knew the next step would be recovery. >> it's possible the body was ejected in the crash. >> marine units searched for anyone who could have been inside. police dives spent hours searching for the driver of that suv but low visibility, debris and the more thanly high tide made searching conditions extremely difficult. a man who declined to speak on camera was interviewed by police and said the vehicle is believed to be his brother's. dives came up the search around 9:00 and police say it could be hours or days before a body rises to the surface. in south philadelphia, cherri gregg, kyw news radio. a driver is now facing dui charges after slamming into a row of parked cars in port richmond shortly after midnight. eyewitnesses counted seven cars in total that were dented or

spent his father's day sending a message about mental health. in video released william talked to dads can and their children who had gone through a difficult time in their lives. it aims to change people's perception of mental disorders. duke also road an editorial talking about the importance of children's mental needs as well. now, the major league baseball junior home derby swings into philadelphia. "eyewitness news" in south philly where local youth shruggers ted up to show up their skills. pretty good. the national hitting competition catered to boys and girls part of mlb's play ball initiative which encourages youth participation in both casual and formal baseball and soft activities. it was a celebration of american history in montgomery county today. "eyewitness news" was there for the june community celebration at saints paul's episcopal

church. it's the day that commemorates the ends of slavery in the united states. the church has a very special connection to this holiday. >> the reason we're celebrating is because the founder jay cook. jay cook was the founder of this church. he also raised 8 billion dollars of funds to support the union army. >> the church was also a stop on the under ground railroad. the network of safe houses where escaped slaves from the south could make their way to freedom. here's something you don't see every day. a cow just, you know, this twitter video from at mac rogers shows the cow making it's way on interstate i295. playt they escorted the animal off the highway. the cow was not harm. no cars were damaged. it's unclear what farm the cow calls home. we can hope he made his way back

there. he was cruising. >> take a little stroll. >> maybe it was his father's day too. >> dropping off milk. >> it was a beautiful father's day day. >> a lot of sunshine and heat climbing into 90's in the city. we're going to keep that heat around. that's not stopping people from enjoying the scene there. ocean city getting a live look on sky cam 3 at the boardwalk packed in there for a sunday evening as we start to close up the weekend. nice conditions right now. we're going to keep the heat around as we head into the next several days and then increase the humidity. so that's not going to feel so nice. we do have a chance of storms as we head into tuesday and some of those could be on the stronger side. that comes in association with a cold front that will give us heat relief as we head into next week, a relief from the humidity as well. but for the next 24 to 48 hours, we're going to be dealing with an increasing sticky factor.

temperatures are hot. 90 is where we're sitting in philadelphia right now. a nice looking scene in center city. of couple clouds west winds helping to cool us off at around 13 miles per hour. we did see people in the scene that in ocean city at the boardwalk. but on live neighborhood network in margate, beaches cleared on out but everyone had a really nice beach weekend with all of the sunshine and cooler temperatures. we're at 79 in atlantic city. 82 in wildwood. we're at 90 in allentown. and pretty toasty in dover at 88. but we're not only ones feeling the heat. a large portion of country seeing the heat in place. 92 in minneapolis. steam mi in chicago at 88 due points are starting to rise. tell us about that sticky park and especially at the shore in the last 24 hours, due points up. we're down a bit in the city and along the i95 corridor with the

due points low to mid 50's. of 60's down the show, you're starting to feel the muggy mark. all across the delaware valley the due points will -- nice moon lit sky. getting hot once again tomorrow. 92 and we're going to have the elevated due points it's going to feel steamyier with the heat in place and i guess 92 is a good temperature to ring in the summer season, officially at 6:34 in the evening as we head into tomorrow ringing in the summer season. but with these hot temperatures, we have this air quality alert in place for much of the delaware valley throughout the weekend. that is going to extend tomorrow with the heat in place, it's going to be on a code other than unhealthy for sensitive groups, the elderly, very young going to take it easy with your outdoor activities as we head into the day tomorrow. full moon tonight it's going to be nice when the full strawberry moon rise occurs at 8:20. look out for it.

it's the strawberry moon by native americans because it was the best time to pick the fruit and clear skies will be conducive to viewing the strawberry moon. we got mainly clear skies right now. just couple of clouds making their way through. we got sunshine tomorrow. date to watch it oh for will be tuesday, we could see one round the showers and thunderstorms in the morning and then conversely more thunderstorms as we head into afternoon and evening especial south of the city. the model is a little indifferentiation, but we could see stronger storms tuesday afternoon. for tomorrow, all sunshine and a lot of heat up to the strong weather. by mid week looking good on wednesday, cooler and less humid with sunshine an storm chance does return once again as we head into thursday. >> very nice and happy father's day everyone didn't get a chance to say that yet.
