presbyterian medical center in university city and that's where we find "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff today who spoke with the officer's family just a short time ago. alex. >> reporter: well, natasha, officer dorman's family says that the road ahead will be long but that he's up, he's walking around and he's in good spirits despite still being in a significant amount of pain. now, not only was he a part-time police officer but also a volunteer firefighter. so there's been no shortage of visitors. it's been a steady stream of law enforcement and first responders at penn presbyterian hospital. >> lifts your spirits now matter what. >> reporter: that's what they're all here to do for 25-year-old folcroft police officer and volunteer firefighter christopher dorman. who was shot seven times yesterday morning ambushed while responding to a report of drug use. >> i'm shot, i'm shot, i'm shot. >> reporter: though critically injured and rushed to the hospital, his bulletproof vest has been credited for saving his life. but today another officer is

getting that sting as well. folcroft officials say that officer dave dipietro was also shot at exchanging fire with suspect dante brooks island so that dorman would not have to suffer any more hits. back at the hospital -- >> me and dorman both have jeep wranglers and he has a orange jeep wrangler. i figured he might want to have fun in the hospital. >> reporter: friends took a break from the kenny chesney concert to bring over some gifts. this chesney t-shirt was signed by dorm plan by friends and new fans of his. >> i'm so glad i was told he was going to be okay. i'll be here all week. >> reporter: now, tons and tons of fans of the country music star kenny chesney have been reaching out to him asking if he'll give a shout-out to the officer tonight on stage. i don't know. we'll see if that happens. reporting live from penn presbyterian medical send, i'm alexandria hoff. natasha back to you. >> that would be awesome. galloway township atlantic county two people were killed

when a car left the garden state parkway and plunged into the mullica river. the crash happened in a southbound lanes just before 1 o'clock this morning. police say driver darryl thomas an passenger zachary pierce died in the crash. they're both from new york city. two other passengers suffered some minor injuries. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. and a new civilian watch group, it is keeping a very close eye on the schuylkill river trail after a series of violent and very disturbing incidents recently. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh was there as the first patrol began. >> reporter: 60 miles, a scenic stretch spans the schuylkill river trail. >> we have like really so much to offer here and it sucks that some people are ruining it. >> reporter: recent crime has turned some regulars into rare visitors. >> when things started happening i stopped running on the trail so much because i didn't feel comfortable. >> every once in awhile you might run into weirdoes. >> reporter: councilman johnson says many called for a watch group concerned about crime on the trail including a

random violent slashing and complaints of groping. >> as a public is he vent people would call me out but rarely do i find people to step up to the plate and say how can i get involved, what can we do to make our city a safer city. >> reporter: so are after about a year of preparation the schuylkill river trail watch launched on saturday. >> you know, we're not just going to be this vigilante force we're going to be out there helping people. it's a volunteer group and every member has been trained. >> observation skills, giving a good description, thousand understand the 911 system, how to make a good report. >> reporter: organizers are adamant they're not replacing the philadelphia police biking the trails they're simply adding extra eyes and ears. today about 80 people have volunteered to be part of the schuylkill river trail watch but the city has made other improvements to the trail including installing mile markers and improving lighting. they're looking into installing cameras along the trail. >> it's important they have something or some group monitoring this placism

anthony murphy who trains the volunteers says those who use the trail shouldn't worry about unfair treatment. >> so, it is not going to generate to profiling just because we're not looking at people as criminals. what we're doing is, say, on the trail, we are a community. >> reporter: one that protects its own and the safety of popular philadelphia attractions. >> you late to see something so wonderful become dangerous and people start to be scared. >> reporter: on the schuylkill river trail, anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> a sunny and less humid start to the weekend but will the nice weather stick around? meteorologist kate bilo is in today for lauren casey with the first look at the forecast. hey, there, kate. >> hey, natasha. what a beautiful day twenty two today, a perfect summer saturday. the good news is we have another perfect summer day on the way for sunday. if you didn't have a can chance to get outside like us you're working for the weekend tomorrow hopefully you'll get a couple hours to get outside and enjoy the sun. storm scan3 clear as can be. no problems, just a few patchy cumulus clouds. storm scan3 shows there's

really nothing going on. imagine a big area of high pressure a big dome keeping us protectd from any nasty weather there may try to head our way. showers and storms diverting to the north of that high. temperatures nice and warm but not unseasonably so. this is pretty typical for late june into the early july time frame. mid 80's that's about where we should be. 85 in philadelphia, 80 millville. sea breeze picked up down the shore keeping it slightly cooler, 76 in atlantic city, 74 in wildwood, the ocean water temperature up to 67, still chilly but those numbers are climbing a little bit each day. allentown at a warm 86 at the moment but the good news, the dewpoints have dropped. dewpoints were in the mid 60's this time yesterday. our current dewpoint in philadelphia is 54. dewpoint of course is a measure of the moisture content in the area. dewpoints in the mid-50's is right in the pleasant range. if you remember last night we were in the mid 60's putting us in the steamy range then makes such a difference this time of the year. 85 over 55 compared to 85/65

will feel completely different outside our seven day spoiler, look forward to tomorrow. that one is a given but the day you want to look out for is tuesday. that's when our next system will move through. it may get in here monday night. moving through tuesday and that's going to bring some changes, a spike in the humidity and that and changes behind that front as well. i'll detail those coming up with the full forecast when we take a look at that seven day. for now, natasha, back over to you. >> thank you. we'll see you soon. officials meantime declare a state of emergency in california as nearly 5,000 firefighters are battling six massive wildfires at this point. the largest fire is in the state, it's burning out of control in central california. cbs news correspondent danielle nottingham talked to evacuated residents who returned to their neighborhoods today. >> reporter: debbie spent saturday desperately searching for her daughter's ashes in the rubly. >> it feels like death. it feels like death. there's no other way to say it. i just -- i'm kind of numb.

>> reporter: she had to leave everything behind when fire quickly swept through lake isabella thursday and spread to neighboring communities. >> it happened so quick. we just couldn't get anything. we just had to run. i've never seen anything so fast in all my life. >> reporter: the fire has burned more than 46 square miles leveling whole blocks and forcing thousands to evacuate. thousands of firefighters are battling hot dry conditions, high winds and rugged terrain. at least 150 structures and homes have been destroyed. officals expect that number to grow as they assess damage here in the fire zone and there are still hundreds of homes in the path of the blaze. fred and elaine roach are some of the lucky ones so far. their home survived. >> it's all now black all around us where it just went on both sides our house. and we're very fortunate that our house didn't burn. >> reporter: this is the largest fire burning in california right now.

and fire officials say there is zero containment. danielle nottingham for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, rescue operations meantime continuing tonight in west virginia in the wake of raging flood waters there that swept through the region. at least 23 people have died making these floods the deadliest in the united states since 2010. heavy rain battered much of the state earlier this week and today along the waters recede some families are returning home to find everything is gone. >> i figured there would be something left, you know, something standing but there's nothing. >> not over. we got out so that's that was matters. >> across the state at least a hundred homes have been seriously damaged or destroyed. west virginia's governor has activated the national guard and also declared a state of emergency in 44 counties. the u.s. coast guard has now suspended search and rescue efforts for a missing florida family whose boat was apparently destroyed in the gulf of mexico.

south korea. the war took the lives of 5 million people including countless american soldiers. it ended in july of 1950's a well deserved honor. religious leaders are calling for an end to gun violence in philadelphia. they all gathered to protest the gun ranges plan to open a new retail gun store in the popular neighborhood -- popular neighborhood. "eyewitness news" at green and percy. religious leaders say the company is looking to gain a zoning variance on wednesday. they believe the city does not need another gun store. >> the zoning doesn't allow him to do this. he says that it does and the zoning board has said that it does not allow him, they're not going to give the variance and we are confident that the court of common pleas will deny his appeal. >> it's 50 states to choose from. they can make a choice not to be here. but pennsylvania law supports my position. >> the owner of the gun range says he's tried to work with his critics to resolve this

issue. families are on the move in camden, new jersey. the city hosted the let's move olympics today. "eyewitness news" at pyne poynt park for the health and wellness event. residents danced, they exercised. kids also got the chance to run through an obstacle course with police officers. various agencies were on hand to offer free help screenings out there as well. the streets of manayunk were certainly alive today for the start of the 27th annual arts festival. hundreds of artists showcased their work along historic main street. this year's show featured 300 different local and nationally known artists and crafters and for the fifth year in a row it included a tender especially for emerging artists. almost a good time. >> great time. >> kate glad you're in in today. >> great to have me. >> there's like nobody out there. everybody is at the shore. >> i goes everyone is at the shore, poconos or at the pool maybe. >> where we should be. >> fantastic. if you're looking for a flies have dinner center city may be the place to go. >> i agree. >> the shore restaurants are

probably packed tonight. everyone trying to be out on the water. take a look down the shore and you can see that is the case. owing ocean city boardwalk crowded this evening. there are probably still a lot of people out on the beach on the sand soaking up the last few minutes of this gorgeous summer saturday. because a lot of people zone have to kind of get up and go a little bit early but if you can stretch out your saturday on the beach and then maybe head to a later dinner that's always a good plan but you see a lot of folks just walking the boards here. we'll zoom around and rides are going, it's the perfect day to be down the shore. can't blame people for getting out of the city and down the shore where it's about 10 degrees cooler. we're in the mid 80's in the city, mid 70's down the shore but if you're in the poconos pretty there, too. here's a live look at broad's head. 85 degrees there, nice and warm even in the poconos. here are those people left on the sand. still pretty busy in margate. people packing up their things but trying to enjoy the last few minutes of this beautiful

day. kutztown 82 degrees, blue skies a few patchy clouds and it's not all that humid which is of course as we talked about earlier the most important thing this time of the year that will tell you how comfortable it's going to be. a quick look at storm scan3 shows nothing going on probably shouldn't even bother to look at it but i want you to picture a big dome of high pressure. we're kind of in a bubble and that's keeping us protected from storms diverted up through the great lakes and throughout deep south. we're looking attribute full conditions, clear skies, comfortable conditions through tonight and that will continue through tomorrow as well but that is going to change as we head into next week. temperatures right now 85 degrees in philadelphia, notice it is about 10 degrees cooler down the shore. 76 in atlantic city. 74 in wildwood. the reason for that is when the sun beats down on the sand during the day creates a pressure differential and that means the winds from that cooler ocean water are going to blow to the warmer land surfaces so sea breeze picking up this afternoon keeping it a little bit cooler along the coast. it's 83 meantime in wilmington and 84 in reading. temperatures are on a bit of an upswing for the next couple

days. we'll spike in the upper 80's monday and then the front couples through late monday into tuesday. that's going to knock us down just slightly below normal but that's how you get your averages if you kind of take that line and make it straight we'll be pretty much right on target for the next several days. so, after a beautiful day today, tomorrow high pressure is in control again. this front is going to be our change maker. it approaches monday, should probably stay to the west for most of the day monday, at least until the evening hours, that's our best chance for a thunderstorm but it will ramp up the humidity a little bit and you can see the temperatures start to rise as that front approaches but here's the front, comes through late monday into tuesday and you can see then we tap into some slightly cooler more comfortable conditions by wednesday and thursday of next week. and loots it might start to heat up again for the fourth of july weekend. overnight tonight mainly clear, comfy, down 63 for your overnight low. taking you through your sinks it's sunny and pleasant. it's a great summer day whether are you in the city down the shore or in the poconos. here's your shore three day forecast. we have sunshine with a sea breeze tomorrow, 77 will be the high.

monday mostly sunny, little more humid. if there's a thunderstorm monday it's at night but a better chance for showers and thunderstorms on tuesday and these owe that is the case in the city as well. just a stray thunderstorm late monday, showers and storms tuesday but we clear it out wednesday and back to comfort and seasonable conditions late next week. >> very nice. lesley's got sports highlights. >> phillies on the road continuing their west coast trip tonight against the giants. they look to even up that series. hellickson gets the start. baumgartner looking for his ninth victory for the giants. vince velasquez back on the team but no word when he'll be back in rotation. last night fourth inning phillies down one-nothing ryan howard hits one down the right field, one run will score. howard with the rbi double. bottom of the seventh inning, phillies up two to one but not for long. brandon bell takes it deep to center and off the wall with the bases loaded. three runs score. giants win five to four.

in other baseball news, the mets have resigned short stop jose reyes to a minor league contract. he was previously with the colorado rockies released after serving a 59 day suspension for domestic violence. prior to that he was on the mets from 2003 to 2011. union in first place looking to extend a 10 game undefeated streak taking on the vancouver white caps. union averaging three goals a game. we'll have highlights at 10:00 and 11:00 of. u.s. men's national soccer team plays in the third place of copa. kickoff at 8 o'clock in arizona. yesterday the sixers introduced the future of the franchise, number one pick of the draft ben simmons. ben simmons met with the media at the sixers practice facility. gm brian cool launch joe says the roster is far from set. he said the sixers the not make any trades at this point because the right deal didn't present itself. as for simmons being a cornerstone player he says the
