>> tina krause is in london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. britain's chief financial officer says the uk is ready to face the future from a position of strength but friday's brexit result triggered the resignation of a dozen politicians and u.s. secretary of state john kerry is traveling across the pond. it comes as british and eu leaders continue to weigh the impact of a messy divorce. speaking in rome, secretary kerry expressed support for both sides. >> most important thing is that all of us, as leaders, work together to provide as much continuity, as much stability, as much certainty as possible. >> reporter: exit negotiations are already proving complicated. british prime minister david cam r cameron announced he is stepping down in the fall. boris johnson in a bid to replace him claims there is no

need to rush, writing in the daily telegraph today, quote, the neve consequences of the vote are being wildly overdone. financial experts around the world remain concerned that brexit could trigger a slowdown in the economy. global stock markets suffered about $2 trillion in losses last week and british pound hit a 31-year low. world markets are bracing for another rocky day today. >> you're going to have your heart in your mouth a few days this week. you'll see the ups and downs and the trend is usually upward overtime. >> reporter: scotland's leader said she would do whatever it takes to stay in the eu. it's expected to take at least two years for britain to officially break from the european union. european leaders are divided on just how to negotiate this brexit, as britain is the first country to leave the european union in its 60-year history. >> tina krause in london where

it's bound to be an interesting day. thanks a lot. in this country, the brexit vote is a topic of conversation on the presidential campaign trill. today, hillary clinton and massachusetts senator elizabeth warren campaigned together in cincinnati. meanwhile, who just released national polls find clinton leading donald trump by 12 points in one poll and by five points in another. >> every president is tested by world events. >> reporter: taking the fight to the battleground states, the clinton campaign is releasing this new ad. >> when the pound goes down, more people are coming to turnberry. >> reporter: painting rival donald trump as unpredictable. >> in a volatile world, the last thing we need is a volatile president. >> reporter: trump shot back saying clinton is trying to distract from what he calls, quote, her bad judgment call on brexit. the clash comes as a new cbsnews.com battleground tracker finds clinton slightly ahead in four key swing states and ahead

by five points in wisconsin and by three points in florida, two points in north carolina, and marginally ahead in colorado. in all of these states, clinton is seen as being more prepared to be commander in chief. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell addressed trump's recent dip in the polls. >> no question he has made a number of mistakes the last few weeks. i thinker riding the ship and a long time until november and the burden is on him to convince people he can handle this job. >> reporter: cbs news director said both clinton and trump need to attract independent voters. >> the poll finds independents largely on the sidelines during these primary processes don't think any better of the republican and democratic parties for having selected their nominees so both of these presidential candidates seem to have some work to do bringing more people into the process. >> reporter: a poll also found voters still feel trump will do to bring change to washington

and do better with the economy. errol barnett, cbs news, washington. more rain is expected today in flood ravaged west virginia. last week's floods killed at least 25 people. flood warnings are in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. today and that includes hard -ht greenbriar county. residents knew the water was coming but never imagined this. >> i'm just heart broke when i come down yesterday and seen it. >> tore us apart. we have no home. we have lost everything. >> some people say they had to swim for their lives. others say they may never be able to live in their homes again. firefighters are making some progress in their battle against a deadly wildfire in central california. the so-called erskin fire has

damaged 200 buildings and burned 68 square miles since it began last thursday. chris martinez has our report. >> reporter: surveying the damage for the first time, the gibbs family found little here to salvage. >> honestly, i was pretty much ready to see it all gone but when you drive up through the neighborhood and you see, like, everything is -- nothing is there. >> reporter: south lake was hit especially hard by the erskine fire. crews are now work to go restore damaged power lines as homemade signs in the area praise firefighters for their efforts. more than 1,700 of them are battling the blaze that has devoured 40,000 acres and forcing massive evacuations. >> a man's home is their castle. >> reporter: olvfficials contin to tally up the fire zone. they have found 200 homes were

destroyed. at a community meeting saturday night, officials say sfit making progress in their fight they are not ready for allow many residents to return home. >> we still have a very ugly fire out there and extremely dry fuel and a lot of fuel with these winds taking off and running and blow back around. >> reporter: the erskine fire is the largest fire burning in california and an elevated fire risk throughout the week. chris martinez, cbs news, south lake, california. in california's capital, sacramento, a slash between members of a right wing extremist group and counterprotesters sent ten people to the hospital. at least five of the injured suffered stab wounds. the trouble started yesterday when members of a white supremacist group, which had a permit, gathered for a rally. they were met by hundreds of counterprotesters. none of the injuries are life-threatening. a singapore airlines flight headed for italy this morning doubled back just in time. the right engine of the boeing

777 caught fire. a warning gauge went on. no one was hurt. two weeks after the nation's deadliest mass murder at a gay nightclub in orlando, gay pride marches were held in cities across the country and one of the largest was right here in new york city. wendy gillette reports. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands came to be loud and proud in new york city's gay pride parade. 40 people in white veils walked in silence representing those killed at the gay nightclub pulse in orlando. 40 flags kicked off the flag. >> i hope i'm doing something to honor their memory. >> reporter: the owner and entertainment manager of the club rode on the lead float. they were followed by a sea of orange. the color that represents the gun control movement.
