we are used to it in the summertime in philadelphia when talking about heat index near 100 degrees that can get dangerous for folks spending hours outdoors. lets look at current temperatures outside, and you can see how hot it is, it is 93 degrees in philadelphia, 93 in trenton. ninety-two in reading. dew points, well, they are climbing. right now not as bad as it will be. 55 degrees is current dew point in philadelphia. seventy-four is current dew point in wildwood and 71 in wilmington. we are in the steamy range but it will get even more steamy before the day is through and before the week is through, is there your excessive heat warning until friday at 6:00 o'clock and it feels exceedingly hot out here in the sunshine and i have got this little device here that tells me how hot it is if i point it at something but pointed at bricks over here sun shining on the right. now 114.6 degrees in the sun, coming up in just about ten mincemeat role goodies justin drabick will tell us how hot

available on freon itunes and google will play. today's heat isn't making life easier on septa riders, day two of the septa's limited services after third of the the train cars were pulled for emergency repairs. joe holden, joins us from jefferson station where thousands of people are trying to squeeze on to a train home, joe. >> good evening. regional rail traffic is moving here, through jefferson station, in fact, at the most of what we have seen from this platform above the rails are a train car that will pull it up, most of the people will flock to it very quickly. i hear a train pulling in right behind me. people will gather around the doors and try to get to the train. late breaking information from septa a, because of the heat as you mentioned, there are some travel restrictions, according to speed, so the trains actually cannot move as quickly as they normally would. that is one more problem, compounding, what is day two of the very rough, rush hour.

>> it has been a rough, tumble ride on the rails. >> taking the train is really only option. >> reporter: septa's regional rail line limp along, day two with the third of the fleet down, riders are feeling squeezed. >> we all pushed on in the aisles, and it is like everyone really packed in. it was really tough. >> reporter: she was lucky enough to get on a train, so many riders were stranded during tuesday evening's rush hour. trains were swamped with people, riders blasted the transit authority on social media. septa tells cbs-3 that they are continuing to evaluate how best to maximize services. >> right now trying to study patterns, what people are doing because a lot of people taking one form of the transportation, coming, might not take the same transportation going. >> we will pick up slack as quickly as we can. >> septa's problems have immediate bum in cash. marcus robinson says his numbers are up 30 percent. >> airport ride, downtown ride just getting people to work as

johns-hopkins kimmel cancer center. >> the idea that those patients who are likely to occur, should, in fact, get additional therapy. >> reporter: researchers say new tests known as liquid biopsy detects fragments of dna linked to cancer that are circulating in the blood, it could help doctors determine which colon cancer patients would need chemotherapy after surgery. >> this is optimum time to treat patients, when they have these tiny amount of cells, too low to be seen on x-ray studies. >> reporter: currently there are no dna based blood tests for cancer that are f.d.a. approved. >> liquid biopsies based on genetic alterations are the next generation of cancer tests. >> reporter: now that study looked at 230 stage two colon cancer patients, blood test was able to pick up half of those patients who had their cancer come back. researchers say more study is

eighty-nine in chalfont and in the lehigh valley we have temperatures well in the 90's at the moment and feels hotter then that. when we factor in dew points in the mid to upper 60's. the those dew points rising with the heat pump off the coast we have heat and humidity being pulled from the south. we will start to see even more moisture work its way in to the region tomorrow and tomorrow into friday, is when the heat will peak. friday looks like a degree or two cooler on the heat index. tomorrow does not look like the worst day. temperatures in the low to mid 90's right through saturday. heat index values near 100, drink plenty of water and try to avoid strenuous activity. running inside on the treadmill this is not the time of the year, this is not the week to be taking any kind of a using outdoors. if you have to work outside frequent breaks and lots of water. future heat index tomorrow morning feels like the 70's. tomorrow mid afternoon 99 is our heat index value and friday pretty much higher then that, mid up toker 90's across the region. future weather showing pop up showers and storms on and off

"eyewitness news" continues now at 5:30. i'm jessica dean. i'm ukee washington. uj justice department is taking over investigation in the shooting of a father of five in baton rouge, louisiana ac bs news correspondent david begnot reports that he was killed during a confrontation with police. >> cell phone video he shows officers struggling with alton sterling outside a convenient store in baton rouge. during the confrontation, someone screamed he got a gun. second later shots are fired. sterling is pronounced dead at the scene. >> they video is disturbing to say the least. >> reporter: thirty-seven year-old family and community leaders are calling it murder. sterling's son broke down as teen's mother a dressed the media. >> one of the greatest fears is to see your child hurt and know that there is nothing that you can do about it.

fire on children and adult in hunting park and hit a 13 year-old boy. shooting happened just before 11:30 tuesday night in the 4200 block of north darren street. before the shooting witnesses say white four-door car hit a man nearby, the female driver, exchanged word, with him and then drove off. witnesses say car returned, another man, got out, and then opened fire on the crowd. >> i was just hearing gunshots, and i ran around the corner. >> based on ballistics evidence we know that these eight shots were fired from a large caliber, semiautomatic weapon. >> reporter: boy was driven to st. christopher's hospital in stable condition, police were checking surveillance cameras from nearby businesses hoping for a break in the case. another teenager is in the hospital after being shot overnight, police say she and her friend might have been playing with the gun. it happened in the 5600 block of boyd street in east germantown. fourteen year-old girl was shot in her hand, upper body and is in critical condition.

police recovered two guns from the roof of the nearby home. police say they are questioning a minor. a senior navy official is under investigation after he was caught on camera pulling a gun on three young men. it happened as they were moving another friend's party near that officials home in fairfax county, virginia pentagon has confirmed the gun man to be carnegie, deputy assistant secretary of the navy for environment. days later the mother of one of the young men filed a complaint after seeing that tape. >> do i hope his employer, now that we know who that is, takes really strong action because it seems like the navy is sending a terrible message if one of their people is so freely abusive to members of the public. >> reporter: episode ended when a a woman believed to be ohan's wife, convinced him to back down. president obama a reversed course on the number of u.s. troops that will remain in afghanistan when he leaves office. correspondent william marks explains what has happened in the war torn country that forced the president to break
