>> i couldn't believe it. i couldn't cry. i just couldn't believe it. >> a dark day for dallas and the entire nation. this is the deadliest tack on police since 9/11. good evening i'm jessica dean. >> i'm nicole brewer. ukee washington has the night off. tonight police are revealing new information about the gunman and his motive. >> here's the latest right now. the white house says president obama will cut his european trip short and visit dallas early next week. dallas mayor mike rawlings says authorities believe gunman micah johnson was the lone attacker in the ambush that left five police officers dead and wounded seven others. during a standoff with police, investigators say johnson told them he was upset about the recent police shootings and wanted to kill white people especially white police office officers. today during a prayer vigil the mayor said dallas is safe and the city can begin to heal. >> i get to quote st. paul.

man who died dull filling his life long dream of being a cop. >> most of the wounded officers have been released from the hospital and all are expected to survive. >> tonight we're hearing from eyewitnesses caught in the crossfire in dallas. protesters scrambled for cover when the gunfire rang out and some of them ran into a nearby mcdonald's using trash cans to barricade the doorway. they described the chaotic scene. >> shooting in one direction and started dotting back. >> everyone in the mcdonald's we all were frantic and we started running. everybody started running towards the back and we were hearing the gunshots. >> many eyewitnesses recorded the events as they unfolded last night and police are asking them to turn over any pictures or video that could help in their investigation. and as police rest gate we are learning frightening new details about the gunman. detectives say they found bomb-making materials during a search of micah johnson's home today. they also found rivals an

personal journal of combat tactics. johnson spent six years in the army reserve where he received several awards. police do not believe he was connected to the black lives matter movement and he had no criminal record. well just one day after the ambush in dallas, two more police officers have been shot in separate states. in both case authorities say the officers were ambushed. in south georgia, police say a man called 911 to report a break in and then shot the officer who came to investigate. both men were wounded in the ensuing gunfire and both are expected to survive. in st. louis the suburb of balance within an officer was ambushed while walking back to his car during a traffic stop. the officer is in critical condition. the suspect is charged with assault of a police officer and is behind bars tonight. it's been a third day of demonstrations on the streets of philadelphia. protesters joining the growing national outrage over the recent deadly police shootings of black men. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandra half off is life the city hall with that part of our

coverage. alex? >> reporter: jessica, about half hour ago two groups marching together all evening long met up here to celebrate what became five hours of piece pull protests. >> we toll them we want to talk to him between our communities and them. >> step by step, marchers departed from broad and erie around 5:30. it was a 4.5-mile walk to city hall and they weren't going alone. >> at first, philadelphia police who shut down broad street for much of the evening large the out numbered just a dozen or so protesters. but the crowd grew as the miles came. >> see how many cops they have walking us down the street? >> yes! >> they thought we was going to be violent. that's not how we do things. in philly we come together. >> we don't hate police. we just hate watching our children be murdered. >> marchers gathered at city

hall boasting bees condemning what they see as discriminatory police violence and denouncing the murderous actions taken towards officers in dallas. >> before night fell, a second group joined in and they all continued on as did a flock of officers assigned to protect them. >> tell me what it was like to be surrounded by so many officers almost escorting making sure that this was a safe demonstration blocking traffic, how does that work into this conversation? >> failure to plan is preparing to fail. we planned before we went out and we talked to them. we let them know what we were going to do and they actually worked with us and came out go good. >> reporter: ass i mentioned there were two groups that joined up together tonight. they concluded here at city hall but there was a third group protesting in north philadelphia we're told they have made their way to center city and right now police are monitoring that situation. reporting live from city hall,

alexandra hoff cbs3 it witness news. >> alex, thank you. family members of philando castile and alton sterling are reactioning to the police officers killings in dallas. he died wednesday after being shot during a traffic stop in minnesota. and his girlfriend live streamed the aftermath of the shooting on social media. a day earlier in baton rouge, louisiana alton sterling was fatally shot during a confrontation with police. the mother of sterling's son told cbs news she can relate to the families of the police officers in dallas are going through. >> the presidential candidates are calling on americans to work together in the wake of the shootings. nominee hillary clinton brought her message to philadelphia tonight. we get more now from "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt. he's live at the pennsylvania convention center. david? >> reporter: hillary clinton was supposed to meet with vice-president joe biden in scranton today.

that event was canceled due to what happened in dallas last night. but she decided that this conversation here was important. >> hillary clinton wasted no time getting to the shoots in dallas minnesota and louisiana when she took the stage. >> i have been following the news of the past few days with horror and grief. >> clinton called for calm in front of about 4,000 at the ame church convention in center ci city. >> no one has all the answers. we need to find them together. indeed that is the only way we can find them. >> reporter: clinton told the crowd she would invest $1 billion in police training if elected president. ame members who watched clinton praised her idea and tone after a rough week for americans. >> there seems to be a lot of divisiveness and i think she wants to help to build those

cbs3 house watch exclusive. south jersey mom who lost part of her vision at the dentist. >> an accident that could have been prevented but her dentist didn't use eye protect. it's a federal recommendation that some dentists don't follow. health reporter stephanie stahl explains. i love it. >> reporter: jenn maroney tried to family art projects with limited vision. her right eye was destroyed during a routine dental procedure. >> this is the morning after i woke up and i actually took a picture of my eye of what it look like. >> when you saw that was did you think. >> i was really scare at that point. >> after getting an injection of nova cane the needle was fumbled and dropped in her eye. it was bacteria from her mouth that destroyed her vision not the needle.

>> the bacteria germs that live inside the mouth are very dangerous inside the eye. >> dr. christopher brady at wills eye at the time tried antibiotics and a number of surgeries but jenn who lives in collingswood was eventually fitted with a prosthetic eye. >> this was a hundred percent preventible what happened to me. if eye protection was worn, we wouldn't be here. i would still have my vision and my life would be a lot differe different. >> jenn is talking about plastic glasses like these the cdc and american dental association recommended that all dental patients wear eye protections. it's a guideline that isn't always followed. >> i really trusted my dentist. i did not know that i would have -- eye protection was so important. >> protective eye wear is critical. >> dr. barnett says eye protection should be used for all procedures even cleanings because spray from the mouth can be dangerous. >> what do you think bowden tifts who don't use these protective eye glasses? >> i think they're running a

risk of injuring themselves, they're assistants as well as the patient. >> reporter: dentists surveyed for one study showed 54% had patients wear safety glasses sometimes. only 6% said most of the time. 20% said never. >> i personally do think it should be mandatory and honestly before i got involved i wasn't aware of this as problem. >> doctors say it's unclear how many people have eye injuries from the dentist. it's jenn's mission now to raise awareness about prevention. >> anybody you know who goes to the dentist which is pretty much everybody when you go you have to wear eye protection. >> she started a sunglass selfie campaign and has a big presence on facebook with jenn's vision. >> i had to fight back and i had to fight back the only way that i can, and one of the most important things to me was making sure that this didn't happen again. >> jenn did sue the dentist under terms of the settlement she isn't allowed to reveal his

name. >> no amount of money in the world would ever get my eye back, would ever get my vision back. it would never make me the person i used to be. >> that dental accident happened three years ago. jenn is calling this the third annual day of awareness for eye protection at the dentist. >> i'm stephanie stahl cbs3 "eyewitness news". it's now been four days since septa removed defective cars from service causing commuter chaos but help is on the way. this was the scene at jefferson station tonight as many commuters finished off week of delays and missed trains starting monday septa will run lease trains from amtrak, new jersey transit and the maryland area regional commuter train service. septa says it expects defective trains to remain down through labor day. former eagles running back lesean mccoy will not face any charges for a fight in a philadelphia nightclub that left two off duty police officers injured. the pennsylvania attorney general's office made the announcement today. solicitor general bruce castor

reviewed the case at the request of philadelphia police's union but it has now been dismissed. the fight happened back in february at the recess lounge in old city. police say it was over a bottle of champagne. the showboat in atlantic city is back open for business tonight after closing its doors in 2014. the resort property opened to guests today but no longer operates as casino. the hotel features over 800 rooms with 38 ocean front swee sweets. developer black steen purchased the property in january and plans to keep the showboat name but offer a different theme next year. get those lottery tickets out. the winning numbers for the $540 million mega millions jackpot revealed a short time ago. it was a busy night for lottery retailers across the region tonight this is the 35th drawing since mega millions had a winner it'sly the longest rollover stretch in the game's history. so here are the winning numbers. eight, 19, 20, 55, 73 and the

comes through to clear everything out and start that humidity dropping for part two of the weekend. storm scan3 this is a six-hour loop i want to show you the one cell that came through the region earlier this evening and produced a good deal of rainfall. it started off here then just dropped down south from portions of bucks county right through atlantic county clipped portions of burlington and camden counties on its way finally that cell is out to sea and while we can't rule out another stray shower overnight tonight worse has moved on out. let's zoom back to the west and you can see we have to put our excitement on hold for lowering humidity at least until this front comes through you see it right here with showers and thunderstorms across portions of the great lakes. this will come through tomorrow afternoon and then humidity will start dropping and nice sunny stretch to look forward to. that particular storm i just showed you dropped lot of rainfall one bulls eye over 3-inches in bucks county zoom down toward atlantic county right around atlantic city some very heavy rain in fact 3.47-inches of rain was reported at the atlantic city airport in pomona.

many pots over 3-inches but the good news i have for you that the flash flood warning that was in effect for that area has been canceled early. the rain has moved on out the flooding has receded and no more threat lingers in that area so that's good news. 75 degrees right now at the airport. 77 in wilmington hold pretty steady through the night he is supperly with the cloud cover. it sticks around overnight and again can't rule out a couple of spotty showers overnight noon tomorrow morning here's 10:00 a.m. cloudy start to the day that should limit temperatures a bit. around three or 4:00 o'clock scattered thunderstorms that try to pop up they'll move east pretty quickly they won't be everywhere. they should be generally brief but they could produce locally heavy rainfall finally late tomorrow night we clear it out sunny is not the sun yesterday day we'll start to feel the humidity dropping sun will return in the afternoon and it will be a whole lot nicer outside. overnight showers maybe even a thunderstorm but i think it's more just scattered showers overnight. tomorrow clouds, some breaks of sunshine and then those afternoon showers and thunderstorms could impact the shore as well especially in the evening. but much better beach weather
