protest. >> there is no greater love in this that these five men gave their lives for all of us. >> reporter: president obama has said to have work on his speech for much of monday hoping to send just the right message to the nation concerned about violence and racial tension. >> i'm's here to insist that we are not as divided as we see, and i know had because i know america. i know how far we have come against the impossible odds. >> reporter: service began place erupted when some of the injured officers made their way in to the auditorium, nine officers and two civilians were also injured in the attack. following the memorial service, president obama met privately with the families of the officers. democrats are taking a long anticipated step toward unity, bernie sanders endorses hillary clinton for president of the united states and they tell us they have one goal. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos is live at the wells fargo center where the

endorsement comes just 13 days before the start of the democratic national convention right here in philadelphia, greg. >> reporter: that is exactly right, nicole, democrats i spoke with this afternoon say this endorsement could not have come a minute sooner and fully expect at least some of the sanders supporters to now back hillary clinton, but some of the republicans i have spoken with said they believe that is not going to happen. >> secretary clinton has won the democratic nominating process. >> reporter: with that senator bernie sanders essentially dropped out of the presidential race, and fully supported hillary clinton. >> i intend to do everything i can to make certain that she will be the next president of the united states. >> reporter: like anything in politics different opinions. >> i think it is hipocrit california. >> reporter: from both on both sides of the aisle. >> this coming together over sanders and clinton, it pretty much ensures inside the building the convention will

inside the convention hall they say outside, could be anything but especially with all of those planned and unplanned protests. we are live here at the wells fargo center i'm greg argos for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". after that rally donald trump mocked the endorsement on twitter says bernie sanders endorsing crooked hillary clinton is like occupy wall street endorsing goldman sachs. meantime trump tells new york times he has narrowed his list of vice-presidential candidate to two people, and that nobody knows who those two people are. trump will rally supporters in indiana tonight and will be joined by indiana governor mike pence hoist on the short list. newly unsealed court documents suggest late penn state football coach joe paterno was aware but yet ignored sex abuse claims against jerry sandusky decades ago. in the court documents man testified he told paterno in 1976 that sandusky molested him as a teenager in the shower. paterno allegedly dismissed

the accuser and said that he quote had a football season to worry about. this information was made public by a judge presiding over litigation by penn state against its insurance company. our joe holden will have more on the report tonight on "eyewitness news" at 6:00. there are growing concerns, following the fatal shooting of a teenager, a 15 year-old boy was killed following a game of basketball in southwest philadelphia last night. "eyewitness news" reporter rahel solomon is live from police headquarters, with the details on that shooting, rahel. >> reporter: jessica, everyone i spoke to told me this was a good kid, he loved music and rap and basketball. his mom said he died because of it. it was a game that he loved, loved to play, even just loved to watch. that is what police say 15 year-old tahir barnes had finished doing when he was killed. >> there was nothing that anyone can say, just senseless, just for no reason.

>> reporter: shooting happened around 9:50 monday night near 60th and baltimore avenue. police say it stems from the basketball game last thursday when victim's team narrowly won. tahir returned monday night to watch others play. police say shooter came, to settle the score. >> it was a quick fist fight and they thought it was over with. this is a result of that fist fight. >> reporter: games were part of the neighborhood league, a league that has been around for more than second ten years create todd prevent these kinds of crimes. >> the whole reason for us having a basketball league toys keep our kids safe, give them something to do in the summer and keep them out of the harms way. >> reporter: his mother says her son just finished freshman year in high school and was a good kid and stayed out of trouble. >> he was outing, he loved his family, he loved his friends. he just wanted to make it. >> reporter: police say shooter fired ten times, two of his teammates were also hit but they are expected to live. tahir did not.

he was doing what many kids do in the summer enjoying sports. he was leaving a place designed to keep him safe. >> because it is just a game. we play again. it is just a basketball game. >> reporter: police believe the shooter is also a teenager probably somewhere between 15 to 117 years old. they are in the process of trying to find who else was at that game last night they are looking for you to see if you have any information or know anything about what happened last night, please contact the homicide detectives. reporting from police headquarters, rahel sol machine for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> rahel, thank you. police need your help identifying this home invasion suspect. elderly woman told police that the man identified himself as a fill gas works employee and then barged in the east mt. airy home this happened last friday on the 6900 block of chris even den street. relative advised victim to call the police no one was hurt but suspect did getaway with the diamond ring. taking a look outside we

the weekend. that is coming up when i join you inside. >> see you then, thanks kate. an investigation is underway after a volunteer fire fighter from north delaware is killed during a training exercise. today officials identified that fire fighter as ken mcclanhand. the accident happened at georgetown delaware coastal airport yesterday. the 46 year-old fell from a helicopter while training with the delaware air rescue team. the faa is leading the investigation. police say driver of the minivan hit and killed a pedestrian in wilmington this morning. investigators say the 46 year-old man was attempting to cross kirkwood highway when he was struck near limestone road around is 11:45. the driver did stay at the scene and the windshield of the minivan was shattered. police say driver was not speeding or driving under the influence. a fast moving fire damages the at least three row homes in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. chopper three over kensington avenue and i streets. fire fighters were called to

the scene around 1:30 this afternoon, fire was placed under control in a half an hour, there were no injuries and investigation and causes ongoing. family of six barely escapes with their lives after their home collapsed in philadelphia's germantown neighborhood this happened just before 8:00 on the 4600 block of germantown avenue. the home owner called 911 after she said cracks inside the house appeared to get worse. when fire department arrives they told the family to get out immediately. the first house, next door from mine, it buckled out and then it fell over on top of my house and then both houses just crashed. >> amazingly no one was hurt, red cross will be a cyst continuing that family no one who lived in the other homes collapsed. charges have been filed against one of the two people caught on top of the center city roof with smoke bombs and a camera. police say this does not appear to be connected to

ramp up. we will go from uncy, perfect summer weather to back to back summer problems we have had intense heat and humidity and threat for pop up thunderstorms. lets take a look outside we will start off with a live look from our go pro camera. look at that deep blue sky over center city philadelphia sky line right now. it is just a stunning afternoon. i can tell you being outside on the sky deck today verse yesterday you have felt an increase in humidity out there dew points in the 60's right now and dew points will be widening tomorrow and thursday, into the 70's so we are right back to that summer discomfort. take a look at our live neighborhood network site at reading, and we are looking west and you can see few cloud bubble up this afternoon. same story in pleasant valley, broadheadsvillain poconos where it is 83. it feels like 85 thanks to the increase in humidity. storm scan three shows what is heading our way as we head through next couple days we have got showers moving in from portions of west virginia and western virginia, it is lifting from the south and west, we will see these showers get here tomorrow, on

and off throughout the day, scattered showers and storms from the city on west but we will not rule them out anywhere and once we get those out tells tours go off to the races starting on thursday. right now 87 degrees, seasonal high this time of the year. eighty-five in reading. eighty-five allentown. forty-eight in trenton. just a few cloud here through the overnight hours, no problems but note clouds do start to increase and tomorrow is cloudy day with a few breaks of sunshine here and there couple the scattered showers in the morning and watch for these pop up showers and storms in the afternoon. here's 2:00 p.m. it does look like we are in the threat zone but any of these storms can produce damage and downpours and gusty wind this continues through to tomorrow evening. that is then clearing out and then gannon thursday we will see more sunshine thursday but scattered showers and storms with pop up storms here and there throughout the afternoon and evening hours. we will feel our heat values ramp up, future heat index values as we head into wednesday not too bad. it will feel like 90 in the afternoon. watch what happens thursday

"eyewitness news" report are cleve bryan is live at a donation center in pennsauken where they are hoping to fill empty seats with donors, cleve. >> reporter: that is good news, if you come down to the blood donation center here in pennsauken you will be first one to go. they have had appointments during date but numbers are far down and they need more people, to donate blood. >> we are in an emergency need situation. >> reporter: one station full and two empty is not happy sight at red cross donation center in pennsauken. >> they have less than a five day supply of blood on hand, but this is very serious. >> reporter: summer is always tough for red cross as people go on vacation and schools host big blood drives are out of obsession this summer shortage begun sooner then previous years. red cross is short 39,000 donations across the country. >> we are trying to assure our hospitals get as much blood as they need but it is tough and does put a strain. >> reporter: red cross

cbs-3 "eyewitness news". thanks, cleve. a grave epidemic is how pennsylvania's drug overdose death rates were described today with the release of the dea's annual report. >> health reporter stephanie stahl has new numbers. >> reporter: very scary. 3300 people die from drug overdoses last year a record number, pennsylvania now ranks eighth in the country for drug deaths, the problem is especially bad in and around philadelphia. >> we're most destructive drug epidemic in our history. >> reporter: calling it a crisis officials released new numbers on overdose drug deaths in pennsylvania last year. they are up, 23 percent. >> this is a public health problem, as well as a criminal justice problem, as well as, a society issue. >> reporter: philadelphia had biggest increase in drug deaths mainly among white men in their 30's. >> it remains the pervasive drug of abuse is heroin and present in 95 percent of the counties reported drug

overdoses. >> reporter: fentanyl was second leading cause of drug deaths it is what prince died from. the potent painkiller is often made illegally and milk with other opioids. >> it is donnas a marketing tool because you want to be able to sell more potent drugs because they are competitors out there. >> this outing heroin epidemic knows no boundaries, age, gender race and economic status don't matter. rural, suburban and every jurisdiction is impacted by the sustain health problem. >> reporter: opioid addiction starts with the doctor's prescription for pain relief and then gets out of control. street drugs being cheaper and easier to get. now among many efforts to bring in the drug epidemic doctors and pharmacies are limiting and tracking narcotic prescriptions now and the state has ear marked an additional 20 million-dollar for treatment and social service programs. it is a huge test. >> it is a complicated process. >> yes. >> heart breaking problem too.

>> thanks. our coverage of the dnc continues now, we are just 15 days away from the start of the democratic national convention here in philadelphia. and today we learn hillary clinton's campaign is planning an event on independent mall after she's officially nominated at the convention. clinton's campaign issued a permit from the national park service for a public assembly on july 29th, the day after the dnc end at the wells fargo center. the permit includes a stretch near liberty bell and independent hall. i will be at the republican national convention in cleveland next week. you can look for my live reports on "eyewitness news" and continuing coverage on cbs philly.com and cbs local app. the republicans are keeping hillary clinton's use of the private e-mail server in the news. attorney yen loretta lynch testified before a house committee on capitol hill to take. republicans criticized lynch for accepting fbi the's recommendation not to charge the former secretary of state. lynch repeatedly said that she wouldn't discuss the specifics

of the fbi investigation. >> a lot of the facts were considered, investigated they arely and reviewed by the entire team which, again is composed of career, independent investigators as well as lawyers, and their recommendation upon a full, thorough analysis was that the matter be resolve in the way it was recommended to me. >> republicans grilled fbi director james comey on the same subject last week. at least 20 passengers were killed and then dozens more injured when two commuter trains collided this morning in southern italy. it happened, in between coastal towns of bar receipt ac bs news correspondent seth down reports from the crash side. >> police tried to console difficulties strut family members as workers carried away victims in coffins. the trains crashed head on in the italian country side, throwing some cars off the track, and leaving victims, trapped and twisted wreckage.

rescue crews in the region rushed to save people. local reporters say a child was pulled out alive. some passengers were able to walk a way from the crash. this women is eight months pregnant. she said i was thrown forward, i saw my father and my sister bleeding. it is unclear how many people were on board the four car trains, which served commuters and students. italy's prime minister pledged to find a cause of the deadly crash, and called it a moment of tears for the country. investigators say that one of the passenger trains was supposed to wait for a green light before heading down the single rail line. set h dome, cbs news, italy. a group of four legged friend is doing its part to comfort the people of the dallas following the tragic killing of five police officers last week. these golden retrievers traveled from chicago to dallas yesterday, group of comfort dogs and their
