6 o'clock. two women have been struck by lightning and hospitalized in point pleasant ocean county. we've got a look at the storm system right now that was in the area when it happened right around three flee clock this afternoon. lots of activity at that time. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. these were two separate strikes apparently that happened within eight minutes of each other and one victim was struck on new jersey avenue on the beach, the other person in a car on the 300 block of ocean avenue. both have been hospitalized at this point. storms are still in the area tonight. let's get right over to meteorologist lauren casey with the very latest on our forecast. lauren. >> thanks so much, natasha. yeah, unfortunate news to hear. we have been contending with strong and severe thunderstorms. not widespread in nature but certainly putting down some gusty winds a lot of frequent lightning and possibly penny size hail. we have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for parts of southern new jersey including a large portion of burlington county this in effect until 6:30 that is for the possibility of 60 miles per

hour winds penny size hail and frequent lightning. lightning activity seems to be waning over the last couple frames of this last couple loops and that's good news but we do have the severe thunderstorm warning, heavy rainfall as well in and around the tabernacle area stretching back into water formed really the cell kind of stationary right now running into the sea breeze. as natasha was talking about we unfortunately did have two separate incidents of lightning strikes in point pleasant. you can see somewhere that big burst of lightning went through around the 3 o'clock hour. i know we use lightning strikes as kind of a metaphor for very unlikely odds but it does happen. it's kind of a misnomer. so far this year we've had 12 lightning strike fatalities across the country. fortunately these people were not killed and only injured by the lightning but we do have that threat and it will continue as we continue to deal with this heat and humidity so we'll talk more about that storm threat and a much quieter day tomorrow coming up in just a couple of

minutes. >> all right, lauren thank you. to our other top story ton firefighter the president of turkey calls for the extradition arrest of a muslim cleric living in our area in the wake of last night's failed coup. that cleric fethullah gülen was once a key ally of the turkish government but now he lives in self exile in the poconos and is being blamed for ordering the coup to seize control of the country. today gülen told reporters that he had nothing to do with last night's uprising that left at least 160 people dead. secretary of state john kerry says turkey would have to prove wrongdoing on gülen's part in order for the u.s. to extradite him. speaking in luxembourg today, kerry addressed the families of the people who died. >> we extend our sympathies to all of the families, the victims, to -- and hour hope that in the immediate hours here things will remain calm.

>> tonight thousands turned out for a rally in the turkish capitol to support the government there. well will have much more on this story coming up tonight on "eyewitness news" at 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock. france has entered the first of three days of national mourning following the bastille day attack that killed 84 people. a memorial is growing by the day in nice. isis is now claiming responsibility for the bloodshed via social media but the attacker's history of mental illness and lack of previous religious fervor calls their claim into question. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live in valley forge right now where many are remembering the victims. alex. >> reporter: well, natasha, it was in may of 1778 when weary troops here in valley forge learned of france's support of the american revolution so this is a place that symbolizes unity between our two country then just as it did today.

every five seconds for five minutes. bells toll from the washington clap pell in valley forge. the sound carried to a grassy spot near the park's memorial arch which calls t where frenche wishers gather to pay tribute to the victims of the terror attacks. >> our hearts go out to the victims and their friends. >> sad for everything that's happened. we're far away and there's nothing we can do. >> reporter: the ceremony concluded way moment of silence and then the singing of the french national anthem, lafayette. as the emotion that comes with being able to honor the lives lost in such a resounding way.

indiana governor mike pence. cbs news correspondent weijia jiang has details. >> the next vice president of the united states, governor mike pence. >> reporter: donald trump introduced indiana governor mike pence as his running mate saturday in new york city calling him his first choice. >> i found the leader who will help us deliver a safe society and a prosperous, really prosperous society for all americans. >> reporter: but. >> but back to mike pence. >> reporter: it took trump nearly half an hour to bring trump on stage. >> i come to this moment deeply humbled but with a grateful heart. >> reporter: trump praised pence as a problem solver. >> people who know me well know i'm a pretty basic guy. i'm a christian, a conservative and a republican in that order. >> reporter: pence adds significant political experience to the republican ticket. he served as a congressman for six terms before becoming a

governor. the republican national convention gets under way on monday here in cleveland but many high profile party members are not coming like john mccain and mitt romney. one of the reasons trump picked pence was to unite the gop pence will try to convince skeptics trump can get the job done. >> donald trump understands the frustrations and the hopes of the american people like no leader since ronald reagan. >> reporter: some protestors plan to voice their concerns next week. the city's police department has prepared for demonstrations for months. the area around the quicken loans arena is already fenced off and officers are scattered throughout the city. weijia jiang for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> jessica dean will be covering the rnc live from cleveland. look for her reports all next week right here on "eyewitness news." meanwhile final preparations are under way here in philadelphia for the democratic national convention. just nine days now until it

begins. the convention runs the 25th through the 28th. presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton is promising an introduction to the amendment overturning citizens united. that's the supreme court ruling that opened a door to a flood of corporate and union spending in politics. clinton will make the announcement tonight in a video shown to liberal activists in saint louis. plans to ban smoking at many new jersey beaches goes up in smoke apparently. governor chris christie vetoed a bill that would have outlawed smoking at all of the state's public beaches and parks. christie says he hates smoking but he wants towns to decide if it should be banned themselves. smokers are happy with the governor's decision. >> i can understand for like health issues as far as like young kids but if you're just out in a parking lot like this and there's no kids around, i say go for it. >> hundreds of towns in new jersey already have their own smoking bans in place. stay with us. still to come tonight on

"eyewitness news" reporter anita oh has the story from glenside. >> reporter: for the professionals this kind of work is routine. for carol multiple sclerosis has made it nearly ill possible. >> every him on this side. i try and it takes me hours to just get a little bit done. >> reporter: a few hours all these guys need to make a difference. around 30 volunteers from the buxmont chapter of the national association of the remodeling industry heard about carol's story and spent their saturday pimping in to help her completely free of charge. >> we're going to do some painting, general cleanup landscaping and yard work. >> reporter: all of that used to be the prized work of carol's husband anthony war veteran who passed away in 2013. anthony was only 17 when he

painting and food trucks as well. this festival shines the light on lancaster avenue as one of philadelphia's arts and culture corridors. good time out there. it didn't rain on them looked like. thank goodness. no storms at that point. >> no storms at that point but we did have strong storm. when thunder roars go indoors i know it rhymes and it sounds silly but it is serious. as soon as hear that first rumble of thunder you really want to book it indoors. about 80 percent of lightning strike victims are male. guys, see those storm clouds, book it on inside. looking good right now, all is clear right now in ocean city new jersey. people out on the beach just blue skies seeing the waves crashing along the shore. nice looking scene but you might have to watch out for some storms as we head any other next couple of hours and as those storms continue to move eastbound but right now center city philadelphia looking pretty good. do have some dark clouds had some storms over the last couple hours. 85 degrees northwesterly winds at around 7 miles per hour. we picked up some tremendous

rainfall totals in point pleasant beach where we did have those lightning strike victims, well over an inch of rainfall with strong and severe thunderstorms that did roll through that area earlier in the afternoon across parts of chester county also picking up healthy rainfall amounts well over a half of an inch and we're still dealing with storms at this time, ocean county again getting lit up, burlington county as well dealing with some thunderstorm activity. we do have the severe thunderstorm warning that is in effect for about the next 15 minutes for parts of southern new jersey including burlington county, camden county and portions of atlantic county as well. this with the potential 60 miles per hour winds penny sized hail. also you're getting good downpour action as these cells are training or moving over the same areas again and again. rain continues to fall in tabernacle. you see lightning strikes so you definitely want to be inside in these areas. this is point pleasant. i showed you this loop at the top of the show. there is that cluster of lightning that went through right around the lee clock hour with that strong cell that unfortunately did injure some people, two people in two

separate incidents. do have some storms, a few isolated ones up towards the poconos moving eastbound. heads up in mount pocono. that is on track to impact you in the next hour. it continues to move eastbound so eventually portions of delaware you could be impacted by the storm activity as we head into our evening hours and future weather showing us that still some storms into the first half of the evening, could see storms redeveloping up towards the lehigh valley for the second half of the evening and then overnight tonight the things quiet down tremendously setting us up for a dry sunday. overnight we'll see those storms for the first half of the night. otherwise becoming partly cloudy, muggy down to 74 degrees and for tomorrow, storms in the forecast, mostly sunny 91 degrees and even a bit less humid. that's going to feel nice but temperatures right now they are toasty. 88 degrees in allentown, 89 in dover, sitting at 85 degrees in philadelphia and then we have that humidity to boot especially south of the city, humidity levels on the steamy

side making it feel like 100 degrees across parts of delaware right now but there's something to look forward to. i know it's in a couple days. the comfort index will drop down dramatically meaning it's going to feel so much better. dewpoints falling into the mid-50's possibly low 50's by wednesday. going to feel so nice. wednesday is shaping up to be an awesome day. as we head into tomorrow an awesome day as well maybe a few isolated showers, a rumble of thunder in or along the coast tomorrow. otherwise staying dry across much of the delaware valley. we see clouds increasing into the second half of the day on monday and we'll see spotty storms firing up. best chance of storm activity is going to be monday night and into early tuesday before we bring that drier much more comfortable air in. so in your short cast for tomorrow watching out for an isolated thundershower in the afternoon. no problems on monday a-hot 187 degrees and then on tuesday we'll have that chance of storms early in the morning and then turn it over to clearing and much lower

humidity levels but it's going to be another hot one across the area topping at 92 in the lehigh valley, we'll get to 91 degrees for the high temperature in dover and in your seven-day forecast, toasty in the city on monday, 95 degrees with a chance of a thunderstorm at night. thunderstorms could linger into the early morning hours on tuesday. then we will see clearing and humidity levels even by tuesday evening you might be able to open up your windows. it's going to feel so much better. wednesday it's right there in the middle of the work week, it's going to be an awesome days, 85 low humidity. >> we both have a headache today with the heat. we're blaming everything on the heat. >> i'm not a doctor. >> 911 on the line. >> thank you lauren. stick to the weather. thank you so much. lesley, we'll figure it out later.

sports over to you. >> phils looking for their first win in the second half of the season as they continue their series with the mets down at the bank. jerad eickhoff on the mound. making a a lineup. joseph and hernandez are out. howard and blanco are in. last night jeremy hellickson got the start gave up four runs on a pair of homers. walked none and stuck out five as the mets won for the 201st time in the last 28 games five to tree. the trade deadline is at the end of the month. hellickson's name has come up. he was asked if the trade talk is maybe getting to him. >> i'd love to be here the rest of the year but obviously i've been through it before and, you know, i know that sifted became. >> summer league basketball is over for the sixers. the next time we will see ben simmons is during training camp in october. brett brown will spend his down time figuring out

thousand use him on the court. last night the sixers finished up summer league play beating miami. 15 points, 10 rebounds six assists. numbers for both summer leagues averaged almost seven points a game. after the game ben was asked what he thinks he needs to work on. >> i got a lot of growing to do. i'i'm not a guy who -- that's what they're trying to tell me to do. i'm enjoying learning. >> and when ben comes to camp he will finally get to meet dario saric. he signed yesterday with the sixers. dario played last two years in the turkish league averaging 11 points and six boards a game. he is also a power forward, the same position as simmons but dario says they could both play together. >> how we would play, how we would help each other during the game and i think we will make good teams, not just me

and ben, i think whole team. >> third round the british open phil mickleson had a third shot league. rory mcilroy does not like the second shot on the 16th hole so whose fault is it. he shot three over 72. he's out of contention. mickleson had a easy time 12 under. last nightfly ball heading into the sands on the third baseline. he makes a great play into the stands to make the catch and fell into some nachos. take a look at the ball covered in cheese. that is what is called a foul ball with whiz.
