fireworks in on day one. the thwarted attempt to thump trump and the heartbroken mom who blames hillary clinton for her son's death in benghazi. and hillary clinton sits down with charlie, she trashes trump as the most dangerous person who ever ran for president. usual opening night move, donald trump came on to introduce his wife. there were two passages in her speech that were strikingly

similar to michelle obama's speech at the convention. >> my parents impressed in me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. that your work is your bond that you do what you say and keep your promise. that you treat people with respect. >> barack and i were raised with so many of the same values. like you work hard for what you want in life. that your word is your bond. that you do that you say what you say you're going to do. you that treat people with dignity and respect. >> we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. because -- because we want our children in this nation to know that the all you need for your achievement is the strength, and

your willingness to work for them. >> barack and i set out to build lives guided by these values. and pass them on to the next generation because we want our children and all children in this nation to know that the only limit to the height of your achievement is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them. >> in a written statement, the trump campaign addressed melania trump's speech. >> in writing her beautiful speech, melania's team of writers took notes on her life's ainspirations and in some instances took fragment ofs that reflected had her own thinking. melania's own experience and love for america shone through in her speech which made it a success." surprise protests they were overruled. >> trump's family will speak

throughout the week. the theme at the convention was security, one of the features speaker was pat lifts who son sean was killed in the attack in benghazi. >> i blame hillary clinton personally for the death of my son. personally. >> iowa senator joni ernst said trump will be the person to keep america safe. >> he will not hesitate to destroy those who wish to harm our great nation. >> reporter: earlier, there was chaos on the floor. some delegates tried to force a roll call vote on the rule. it was rejected. kras boswell, cbs news, cleveland. >> cbs news' bob schieffer has been covering conventions since 1968. here's his take. >> reporter: this one is

different. the republican party is vetting a candidate who has never held public office, never served in the military. anti-coddle reform. that has proposed a budget critics say will add trillions of dollars to the national debt. by any conventional reasoning, he is a long shot, but this is not a typical year. republican primary voters chose him because they say he speaks his mind and they feel abandoned by their party. but his nomination has left this party deeply divided, so divided even the republican governor john kasich will not be here. his friends say he will not step foot in the arena because he disagrees with what trump stands for and feels it hypocrital to give his stamp of approval. barry goldwater wrestleded a nomination from the republican establishment in '64, but lost

to lyndon johnson. democrats kick out party regulars in '72 and nominated george mcgovern, he won only one state. donald trump may or may not win. but in a party nation an identity crisis, the overriding question here is, is he changing the party for better or worse? or as amany establishment republicans worry, destroying it altogether. >> well, weijia jiang is in cleveland. and the theme for today is make america work again, weijia, what is that going to work like. tell us about that theme? >> well, is this is a time for republicans talk about donald trump's one of his greatest strengths is to create jobs and boost the economy. the official theme for the rnc also specifically mentions hillary clinton with a warning that a clinton presidency would

be much more of what they call anemic economic growth. of course, we expect to hear solutions how trump would fix that, all in mind with make america work again. >> who are the big speakers? >> well the lineup has high profile republicans paul ryan, mitch mcmcconnell, at one point, chris christie promised this is going about a show event but also shaping up to be a family event. we'll hear from the trump children including tiffany trump, donald trump jr. >> weijia jiang in cleveland, thank you so much. of the kind of power that any president should impose upon himself. he has shown none of that. let's return to torture. and you know what, i will order the american military to commit war crimes. what he has laid out is the most dangerous reckless approach to being president than i think we've ever seen. well, coming up on "cbs this morning," more of rose's interview with hillary clinton, and coverage of day two of the gop convention in cleveland. baton rouge police say the former marine who ambushed police officers systematically targeted them. an autopsy is expected to be performed on gavin long's body today. don champion is in baton rouge. don, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie, authorities offered up new disturbing details yesterday as they vowed to leave no stone unturned in the investigation. two days after the tragedy, it

is clear the government used his military training to ambush the officers. >> reporter: chilling new images released by investigators offered new detail on the baton rouge gunman's deadly attack. they show gavin long armed, dressed in all black, as he carried out his shooting sunday. investigators say the former marine bypassed civilians while methodically searching for police officers. >> he was looking for locations to specifically target police officers. there's no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated. >> reporter: three officers were killed in the eight-minute rampage. the gunman was eventually akiled by a s.w.a.t. team with a shot fired from 100 yards away. three other officers were wounded including sheriff's deputy nicholas touhy who was shot in the head and stomach as he sat in his patrol car.

>> we're just praying for him and just have to see what happens. >> president obama called the families of the officers and law enforcement yesterday to offer his condolences. attorney general loretta link condemned the attacks and called them counter productive. >> it just seems to have pulled us back into a period where we're so far apart. >> reporter: while investigators say long after they're still looking for someone who may have known about his plan. now, as part of the investigation, authorities are still trying ing ting to build line on days before the attack. meantime, president obama has ordered the flag fly at half-staff in honor of the fallen officers. anne-marie. a teenage migrant who attacked passengers on a german train was shot and killed by police. the train was traveling through central germany last night when

a 17-year-old used an ax and knife to attack passengers. four people were injured, three suffering serious injuries. the teenager was shot as he tried to flee. he had a hand painted isis flag in his home. a french prosecutor who says the truck driver who killed 84 people in nice had excessive force for isis. officials say he carefully plotted the attack. and several visits to the beachfront in nice. well, coming up on the "morning news," exposing twitter patrols. leslie jones calls out racists on social media. and writer's remorse, the man who wrote donald trump's "the art of the deal" is now expressing remorse. this is the "cbs morning news." faster than heartburn.
