search and rescue at sea, off cutie life guard find themselves back on duty in atlantic city. tonight beach patrol has a stern warning that they want people to take seriously. the news continues now at 5:30. good evening everyone i'm nicole brewer. jessica dean is on special assignment. >> i'm ukee washington. emergency call came in as possible drowning in progress. "eyewitness news" new jersey reporter cleve bryan explains how ignoring the beach patrol, nearly turned to tragedy, for one family. >> a day at beach took a difficult as trust turn for family at rhode island avenue in atlantic city on monday. officials say at 6:08 p.m. just minutes after life guard packed it up for the evening they received a call for drowning in progress. >> we found out that a young pakistani woman had gone out along rock pile. >> reporter: rescuers arrived in a few minutes and soon found would the man about three blocks away floating face up. >> we called fire rescue squad, to the beach. >> reporter: immediately began cpr. she was then taken to the hospital in critical

condition. her sister suffered a broken leg running in the rock pile. victim's father explained to the beach patrol lieutenant on the scene that his family had just a arrived in the u.s. from pakistan this evening and weren't very experienced with the ocean. young woman sucked out to see was fully clothed. >> this particular family was actually warned, by the life guard, to definitely stay out of the water. they chose to fall in the water after we left. >> reporter: beach patrol officials say they know during summer days are long and in the evening the ocean looks very inviting but unless you are an experienced proficient ocean swimmer, going in after the life guards leave just isn't safe. >> the jetty, it is just so dangerous out there. rip current and under toe central. >> reporter: just this past weekend ac bp rescued 20 people after 6:00 p.m. only kentucky avenue has extended protected hours so beach patrol plans to add extra patrol from there but they need public's help. >> if the life guard aren't on duty, it is not smart to swim ever.

>> reporter: in atlantic city cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". new york city is faced with the traffic nightmare after a crane collapses on to the best i tappanse bridge injuring five people and causing major delays. a crane top old cross all lane of the new york bridge causing traffic backups for miles in both directions. >> it is not known why this crane toppled over or how long it will take to correct the situation. >> reporter: crane also took out part of the bridge's guardrail and emergency crews, removed three drivers and put them on stretchers. the tappan see is being replaced. base of the crane was on the new span under construction right next to the old bridge. tappan see connects west chester and rockland counties just north of the new york city, 140,000 cars cross it every single day. now, three drivers and two bridgeworkers were injured, in that collapse, the coastguard says that the crane operator was pulled to safety from the water. back in march a tugboat struck
