second that this will be easy. the outcome of this election depends on us. how we contend with an incredible onslaught that is coming our way. you know, this won't be america's first glimpse of the clinton machine in action. as bernie sanders can tell you. this time around, she will have the press doing half of her work for her. the good news is, it won't be nearly enough. not against the candidate who has captured the attention of the country the way that donald trump has. on issue by issue, he and i will take our case to the voters, pointing out the failures of the obama-clinton agenda and showing

a better way. we will win the hearts and the minds of the american people with an agenda for a stronger and more prosperous america. [applause] now, the establishment in washington d.c. thinks it's a narrow range of voters that are giving donald trump a serious look. i can tell you first hand, there's a lot of americans out there that feel like democrat politicians have taken him for granted. it's union members that don't want a president that promises to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business. those miners want an american energy policy, and they know that donald trump digs coal.

it's african americans who remember generations of hollowed promises about safe streets and better schools. they know donald trump will fight for equal opportunity and he loves educational choice. and it's hispanic americans who respect the law, want jobs and opportunities for their families that know that donald trump will uphold the law and get this economy moving for every american. you know, the party of lincoln was founded on equality.

during these difficult days, it will be our party and our agenda that opens the doors for every american to succeed and prosper in this land. you know, in so many ways the democratic party has abandoned those that it used to protect. maybe they're so entrenched in power. so comfortable at times that they lose patience with the normal legislative process. it's so much simpler to impose their values by executive order or court action. make no mistake about it, hillary clinton has some big ideas along those lines, too. as this election approaches, every american should know that while we're filling the presidency for the next four years, this election will define

the supreme court for the next 40. [applause] we all better think very carefully, very carefully about what this means for our constitution and limited government. elect hillary clinton and you better get used to being subject to unelected judges, using unaccountable power to take unconstitutional actions. let me say, for the sake of the rule of law, for the sake of the sanctity of life, for the sake of our second amendment and for the sake of all of our other god-given liberties, we must assure the next president appointing justices to the supreme court is donald trump.

[cheers & applause] and hillary clinton's record on foreign affairs get even worse. you know, it was hillary clinton that helped undue all the gains of the troop surge. a staggering failure of judgment that set isis on the loose. it was hillary clinton who instigated the president's disastrous agreement with the radicals in iran. it was hillary clinton who left americans in harm's way in benghazi and after four americans fell, said "what difference at this point does it make." [booing].

[chanting]. as a proud father of a united states marine, let me say from my heart, anyone that says that, anyone that did that should be disqualified from ever serving as commander in cheer of -- in chief of the armed forces of the united states of america. [cheers & applause] 7 1/2 years of barack obama and hillary clinton's policies have weakened america's place in the world. terrorist attacks at home and abroad, grim and heart-breaking scenes from france just a few short days ago. the attempted coup in turkey all

attest to a world spinning apart. history teaches us that weakness arouses evil. hillary clinton and barack obama's foreign policy of leading from behind, moving red lines, fainting resets with russia and the rise, rule and reign of isis are a testament to this truth of history. we cannot have four more years a apologizing to our enemies and abandoning our friends. america needs to be strong for the world to be safe, and on the world's stage, donald trump will lead from strength. loved by conservatives, he's an evangelical, a member of the grass roots and he's supporting donald trump, that put donald trump, the outsider, into the coalition. the republicans -- the trump team knew what cruz was going to say. the irritation is that he didn't improve a little bit on it. that he basically -- it was such praises to be nonexistent. a lot of irritation. although it's not clear. they -- the reason they had the speech and the remarks in front of them. it may be after the fact irritation. there's in question in the republican national committee and the trump campaign, they're irritated with senator cruz. >> john dickerson, thanks very much. ted cruz earlier tonight walked out to a thunderous standing ovation and then ended up being booed off the stage after he

republican advice presidential nominee michael pence take the national stage. he introduces himself on the country and makes the case as to why donald trump should be the next president. pence spoke about his own values and the strength of donald trump. >> i'm ukee washington. >> i'm nicole brewer. >> jessica dean is live in cleveland. and at one point tonight, there were boos on the convention floor. good evening. >> reporter: good evening to both of you. we just heard thunder russ applause. appearing with donald trump and this crowd went crazy. take a look. >> the night was an important debut for indiana governor mpz. despite his differences with some of trump positions like the war on iraq, pence gave a full

thwarted endorsement. >> with this united party he's got backup and on november 8, i know we will elect donald trump to be the 45th president of the united states. >> reporter: trump son eric said his father's outsider status is his strength. >> vote for the candidate who can't be bought, sold, purchased, intimidated or steered on the path that is right, just and crew. >> reporter: scott walker was once a candidate for at the gop nomination he took to the stage to fight against hillary clinton. >> i'll vote for anyone other than donald trump in november is a vote for hillary clinton. >> reporter: senator ted cruz was one of trump fearsest competitors and everyone was watching to see if he would endorse the man who called him lying ted.

writer took responsibility for the plagerism. meredith mciver offered hiring resignation but was rejected. mciver says she did not check the first lady's speechs before approving milania's. >> and donald trump seems to be enjoying the controversy, the nominee tweeted good news is milania's speech got more publicity in the history of politics especially if you believe that all press is good press. >> joining us now is the chair of the dnc host committee and former pennsylvania governor ed rendell. >> so much to talk about tonight. let's begin off of that story. some time passed. your impressions on the speech controversy. >> i feel sorry for milania trump. i got to know her when i went out to meet her a couple. times with donald and milania's and that was at ivanka wedding. and she was a wonderful kind person's she was set up by

either gross negligence or whatever by speech writers. said to nbc she wrote the entire speech with a little help and plagerism like i never seen in a convention speech. >> how did this happen. >> incompetent campaign. look, i don't mean to be partisan, i think, for example, michael pence made a very good speech, especially when he introduced himself. this convention has been a disaster for the republican, on monday. campaign manager attacked john kasich the popular republican governor of ohio. monday night we have the milania controversy. tuesday, ben carson compared hillary clinton to lucifer and then the crowd started yelling lock her up. which may do well in the hall but doesn't play well with undecided american voters and tonight i've been to eight conventions, i've never seen a

major convention speaker not endorse the candidate. that was a humiliating for cruz because he made a blunder. also, what message does that send out to conservative republicans? message is ted cruz thinks donald trump is not worthy of the election. michael pence the man who started as a democrat, your thoughts on overall message. >> i thought again, very good at the beginning, when he introduced himself in a self dep indicating manner. charming, i thought he did a good job laying out his record as indiana governor. then did a job as possible, defending donald trump. but the big problem is, tonight was supposed to be about the economy. one substantive idea of what republican and the trump administration would do to improve the economy? not one. he's going to repair the infrastructure.

how is he going to pay for it? no substantive idea. just rhetoric, and that's where it falls down. secondly, i hope when we get to philadelphia, we don't spend 90 percent time attack to go donald trump. i believe we're going to spend time talking about the things hillary clinton wants to get done at president. >> speaking of philadelphia and hillary clinton she will be naming her running mate soon. who catches you here who would you like to see. >> i would like to see the senator of agriculture who is great governor of iowa. he's been a terrific secretary of al culture. a western pennsylvania was born in western pennsylvania, terrific guy. i believe it will be either him or tim cane but let me tell you my predictions have been long the last year and a half. >> we appreciate you coming in. as always, thank you, appreciate. we're now five days away from the start of the democratic national convention once again right here in philadelphia. and the clinton campaign is

facing strong criticism from the philadelphia police officers union tonight. officials are my happy with the the dnc's lineup of speakers. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt tells you why. >> reporter: john mcnesby, the head of the fraternal order of police in philadelphia, put out this scathing letter criticizing the clinton campaign for not including widows and families of police officers killed in the line of duty on the finish speaking list. he used the words shocked and saddened. >> salt in the wound by having these speakers up there and supporters of this police movement. >> reporter: he told "eyewitness news" by telephone he's upset with tuesday night speakers which include mothers of michael brown, eric gardner and mother of sandra blent. the three deaths prompted public protesters of police officers. >> we hope and pray that the community stand behind us.

>> reporter: he continued in the letter saying that it is sad that to win an election mrs. clinton must pander to the interest of people who do not know all the facts while the women and women they seek to destroy are outside protecting the political institutions his country. >> while family members of officers killed in the line of duty are not scheduled to speak. former police commissioner will speak. clinton's communications director said in a statement, quote, as hillary clinton has said, we need to support heroic police officers who put their lives on the line every day as well as listen to the voices of mother who have lost their children, we look forward to highlighting the courageous evidents of law enforcement with speakers of our convention including pennsylvania and praising their work to keep our community safe. >> i've also confirmed can joe sweeney a former nypd detective who rescued people on 911 will al be speaking to delegates at the dnc next week. reporting from the stat center, david spunt cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> thank yous so much.

applause. people were standing for his speech. many applause. there's emotional moments where he talked to his mother and his mother was in the crowd tonight. overall, he did a fantastic job tonight connecting with very conservative face. >> i thought it was funny he poked fun at himself, you probably don't know me as well. donald trump has charm and charisma and he picked me. this was an introduction to so many people who they didn't know him well enough to form an opinion. >> he said that too. he said three weeks ago, many of you never heard of me and spoke to him and he said the first conversation donald trump and i had about this was a matter weeks ago. i believe he connected well tonight. >> then we have to get to the ted cruz thing. this is something that so many people say they've never seen before. and what we're talking about is what we addressed earlier in the broadcast, the booing when

donald trump walked into the arena, he mentioned voter -- people wanted that endorsement and it just didn't happen. does this bring the party together in way around a trump or does it push everybody apart and show more, you know. >> is some of the delegates and others day, i think everyone thought that the unit was starting to happen. i saw people with sign that is said cruz delegates for trump. we thought people were coming together. i noticed interesting things tonight where ted cruz only used donald trump's name once. he did say vote your conscious, which is the mantra of the never trump movement. i think it was a low point and i don't think it plays very well. >> that crowd got agitated. >> they were chanting we want trump and trying to out shout senator cruz at the podium. >> might i eclipse michael pence. >> i don't think because he still closed it on a high note, thunder rust applause, people standing the entire time.
