trump accepts his party's nomination for president. good afternoon, i'm brooke thomas. >> i'm jim donovan. tonight republican nominee donald trump will give the biggest speech of his political career. he'll accept the party's nomination on the final night of the gop convention in cleveland. the speech is taking on new importance his former rival ted cruz continues to stir up controversy and steal the spotlight. kenneth craig talked to cruz in cleveland this morning. senator cruz, do you regret your remarks last night? >> i'm getting ready to talk to the delegation. >> breakfast for texas delegat delegates, ted cruz refused to back down about not endorsing donald trump. >> if you go and slander and attack heidi that i'm going to nonetheless come like a puppy dog and say thank you very much for ma lining my wife and fath father. >> cruz stole the show wednesday night when he snubbed trump during his speech at the republican national convention. >> vote your conscious, vote your candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend

to the event on hillary clinton.com. in the meantime democratic insiders say clinton could announce her running mate as soon as tomorrow. she'll be campaigning in florida on friday and saturday. and two candidates have emerged as possible choices they are agriculture secretary tom vilsack and virginia senator tim kaine. the president of the philadelphia police officers union is not happy with the list of speakers at next week's dnc. john mcnesby put out a letter criticize the clinton campaign not including widows or family members of the police officers killed in the line of duty. mcnesby told "eyewitness news" by the phone he's upset the mothers of michael brown, eric garner and sandra bland will be speaking. all lee died during interaction with police and their deaths prompted public protests of police officers. >> putting salt in the wound by having, you know, these speakers up there and supporters of this anti police movement. >> the clinton campaign says former police commissioner karl

muggy factor as we head into the second half of the day. you'll especially start to notice it this evening and then you'll definitely notice it this weekend and excessive heat watch is in effect for the entire delaware valley. saturday morning through sunday afternoon as high temperatures will be approaching record territory climbing up to a forecast high of 97 degrees on saturday. our record is 101. we'll likely tie a record on sunday at 98 degrees. and kicking off the dn dnc96 degrees for all the out of towners would tie a record in philadelphia. now these are just the air temperatures. not even factoring in some of that humidity. we'll talk about where those heat indices are headed and of course with all this heat in store forly its upcoming weekend don't forget your furry friends. the temperature of the asphalt can reach 145 degrees on 90-degree day. if you want to help out your pet friends place your hand against asphalt the back side of your hand hold it there are for seven seconds see it comfortable for

your pet friends to walk on with this all heat not so keep them on the grass. we'll talk about that weekend forecast and all this heating up in just a few. >> great tip. thanks lot lauren. police believe a drunk driver could be responsible for hitting and killing a man in nicetown. it happened just aft 3:00 this morning on the 4300 block of wissahickon avenue. you can see the suspect's white bmc heavily damaged. police did find alcohol in the driver's car. meanwhile, philadelphia police are investigating several shootings in the city overnight. in overbrook a man was shot in his car in a driveway in the 5800 block of woodcrest. he tried to drive away but he hit two nearby parked cars and died at the scene. police are now looking for at least two suspects and they're reviewing surveillance cameras for clues. another deadly shooting this one at the intersection of cambria and mascher streets in the fair hill section of north philadelphia. police tell "eyewitness news" that the victim was shot 14 times including five times in the head. he was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly before 2:00 this morning.

so far, there are no arrests. gun violence continues. wednesday evening a 15-year-old boy was shot in the frankford section of philadelphia. police tell "eyewitness news" this shooting on the 4800 block of griscom street stemmed from an argument the day before. police rushed the victim to the hospital where he remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the stomach. police are interviewing a person of interest. well, southwest airlines is back up and running but they're warnings travelers the effects of yesterday's computer melt down will linger for much of the day. check your flight status by assessing the philadelphia website through ours at cbsphilly.com. justin firm shows it what it look this morning at the airpo airport. >> reporter: patience is a virtue for southwest customers flying today. many who came to philly international early this morning to fly out only to have those plans grounded. >> what surprises me there was never a southwest representative passing among the passengers to

explain what had happened. when you came in that we knew about flights being canceled. many people got the notice while standing in line that the flight was cancel. >> reporter: cancellations coming as a result of a wednesday tech glitch that stimied the southwest computer network. the morning after ticket counter kiosks were out of service. and agents were manually rebooking, reschedule link and canceling fares. >> by mid morning the south west check in lines snaked around the and tire are the of the terminal effect ticketing area and this is why the airline is asking customers to check in with them first for their flight status and if you are taking off, to give yourself several hours before your night. by its own count the southwest systems melt down led to 700 flight cancellations and hundreds more delays. the entire website was down. the app was down. >> reporter: the system did allow some plains to take off last night. however, there were still a backlog of flights to schedule and customers to service. >> we have plans to go out

police standoff stopped traffic in new york city for hours. >> it all started before midnight when man allegedly through a fake bomb into an nypd van near times square this surveillance video captures an suv driver approaching the officer's vehicle and then tossing something inside. the officers immediately moved their vehicle away from busy times square and called in the bomb squad. the suspect was later surrounded eventually taken into custody sometime before 8:00 this morning. the parents of a little boy killed by an alligator at a disneyworld resort say they will not sue disney. lane graves mom and dad say a lawsuit cannot bring their little boy back. melissa and matthew graves plan to start a foundation in their son's name instead it was just last month when an alligator pulled the two-year-old boy underwater at the grand floridian resort. >> in other news florida health officials say they are testing mosquitoes trapped near miami

temperatures we've had yet this season, that's why we do have excessive heat watch saturday morning through sunday afternoon, through right now pretty typical july going on, 58 degrees, live look at center city philadelphia, a lot of blue skies, just friendly looking cumulus clouds at this point. and the win out of the south at around 9 miles per hour, but 90-degree days have been plentifull so far this month, we've had eight, 16 so far this season, average season we have 23, so getting close to the average. we will tack on elmore even headed into the next few days, temperatures pretty consistent across the area, 79 degrees mount pocono after starting off in the 50, eight an allentown, 83 wilmington and in the low 80s down the shore right now. dew points they tell us about that sticky factor, and really not too elevated except for wilmington, points southwards there, dew point up to the upper 60s near 70. still relatively dry as far as comfort levels up towards the lehigh valley but again as we head into the upcoming weekend we elevate the humidity levels, push high temperatures

into the upper 09 ace. so, it will feel like 100-105 degrees, you know what that means, drink plenty of water and take it very easy. that already easy to do if you head down the shore. put our your beach chair, take in the sea breeze, live look at the neighborhood network at margate, beach getting pretty active right now, not a cloud in the sky, nice looking scene there, down the shore, good place to be, poconos, anywhere you can get your cool on. how it will feel on saturday, 105, feeling like 101 on sunday. and even into monday, that heat index still up into the triple digits. so for today, enjoy, more comfortable conditions, seasonable, mostly sunny 89 degrees, no problems tonight, mostly clear, warm falling back to 71 degrees, sunset is at 8: 24 this evening. storm scan3 showing us trend of the day so far. that's a bunch of nothing. up and down the i59 corridor, but we could see few late day storms developing tomorrow. storms that do develop could be on the stronger side again, not going to see one storm activity but few hit or miss

storms watch out for those, saturday, sunshine feeling like 100 plus then on sunday ya, we keep around the hot factor, not quite as humid into sunday but high temperatures could even be few degrees warmer, than what we're going to feel on saturday. so we've got hot conditions really all across the region as we head into the next couple of day, today the most comfortable feeling day, beautiful beach day headed into tomorrow bit of breeze 88 degrees then saturday even down the shore high temperature reaching to near 90 degrees. we'll hit 93 in the city tomorrow. and then it is an upper 90s into the upcoming weekends, that ac is going to be running on full blast, monday we kick off the dnc here in philly, it will be another scorcher. 96 degrees with chance of few late day storm, and even into the 90's, as we head into tuesday. well last week i got to meet some great kids, who may get to do what i do for a living when they grow up. some future meteorologist, we held kid caster auditions at
