>> ♪ >> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> right now on "eyewitness news" strong storms hit the philadelphia area. here's a look at the driving rain in spring garden this evening pooling in the streets and also sending some folks running for cover. thanks for joining us, i'm natasha brown.

these storms blew through about 5 o'clock this evening. they'll be in the area for another couple hours or so. meteorologist lauren casey is in the weather center to tell us what we can expect for the rest of the evening. >> thanks natasha. we have a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings in effect right now. not for philadelphia county but this one particular cell that did roll through around the 5 o'clock hour in center city now kind of riding along the a.c. expressway and moving itself down towards the shore so if you do have friends and family members right now out on the beach want to give them a call let them know what is coming their way especially from atlantic city up into the beach haven area. you see the cell approaching moving to the south about 35 miles an hour. frequent to continuous lightning a severe thunderstorm with the possibility of 60 miles per hour winds and also quarter size hail so you can see some rain already starting to sneak in around the ac area up into brigantine but you'll be dealing with the hearty severe thunderstorm in these areas as we head into the next 30 minutes. no warning for philadelphia and some of the western

suburbs but we're seeing heavy rain coming down maybe a few lightning strikes as well and parts of delaware dealing with a severe thunderstorm warning for northern and central delaware until 7 o'clock. that cell is moving to the southeast at about 35 miles per hour. watch out for the possibility of gusty winds also nearly continuous lightning about to impact parts of delaware as we head into the next 20 to 30 minutes. on storm scan3 quite a we're rain cooled in philadelphia right now at 82 degrees catching a break but we're 95 in dover, 95 in allentown. check out some of these feels-like temperatures. feeling like 109 in dover, feeling like 101 in wildwood. and we he do have the excessive heat warning that runs in and along the i-95 corridor until monday at 6 o'clock. a heat advisory for the

remainder of the area that will kick back in as we head into monday. get a little bit of a break tomorrow in the humidity department monday just in time to kick offer the dnc the heat and humidity will be on once again. we'll talk about all of this in a couple minutes. >> lauren thank you so much. now to our other top story. parts of south philadelphia are on lockdown just two days before the start of the democratic national convention. streets are closed off as security teams perform a thorough sweep of the convention area. meantime democratic delegates are arriving from all around the country right now getting ready to make their voices heard on the convention floor. and. >> the next vice president, my friend, senator tim kaine. >> presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton introduces her running mate virginia senator tim kaine. now kaine and clinton made their first appearance together this afternoon since clinton announced her choice on twitter last night the the event was held at florida

international university where more than half of the student body is hispanic. and clinton is hoping kaine who is fluent in spanish can help solidify her support among latino voters. >> i'm grateful to you, hillary, for the trust that you've placed in me he and we're going to be. [speaking foreign language] >> kaine has served as a former mayor also virginia governor. he he supported president barack obama back in 2008 and was an early supporter of clinton during this election cycle. now clinton and kaine will formally accept the nomination at the democratic national convention right here in philadelphia and right now a security sweep is making driving in parts of south philadelphia extremely difficult. today authorities closed south broad street from packer avenue down to the navy yard and the roadways surrounding the wells fargo center and fdr park are also closed off as well. penndot closed the i-95 exit ramps to broad street last

night. the city is expecting some 50,000 visitors in town for the dnc at the wells fargo center. in addition to the road closures already in effect, officials say people should expect temporary closures throughout the convention because of dignitary movement and potential protests and protest movement. and the sports complex neighborhood driveways are already chained off and police officers will be checking to make sure people live in that neighborhood. >> everybody knows we've had advance notice and i think when you have advance notice you're prepared. we shopped in advance which i suggested to everybody and we're ready. >> delegates from all across the country beginning to arrive in philadelphia this weekend. they're excited to unify the democratic party and also make history they hope. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff has that part of our coverage. >> reporter: it's not easy to pick a delegate out of a crowd. but at philadelphia international airport they just seem to have an extra pep

in their step. >> just got here looking forward to it. >> i was at denver where president obama was first nominated and it was tremendous coming from illinois. >> this crew is among the 4,765 elected party representatives from around the country and david miller wants to witness his second history making nomination. >> just makes it an exciting time for us to be here in the city of brotherly love. >> reporter: buses and cabs will disburse the delegates between 26 philadelphia area hotels some even bunking up together to cut costs. the lowes hotel in center city will host virginia and new york. >> we are folk confidence with our team members here all about service excellence. >> i learned the process and really you just have to fill out an application they put your name on a ballot. >> reporter: david traveled from florida to get here. he's just 25 years old and weighed in on hillary clinton's vice presidential choice virginia senator tim kaine. >> he speaks fluent spanish and they're going to go crazy in miami. they're going to love that but also he's very experienced.

some of the other candidates that were on the short list i think that maybe they weren't ready to be president and ultimately that has to be your final factor when you decide who your vice president will be. >> reporter: it's the meeting of the minds as the delegates get ready to hit the convention floor and streets of philadelphia. as for any down time they can use their official credentials to access political fest. residents are asked to reserve their tickets on line. from that independence mall alexandria hoff cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> super delegates! >> we are already seeing some protests before the dnc even begins. demonstrators gathered outside of the dnc rules committee meeting today at the pennsylvania convention center. they're calling for changes inside the democratic national committee. after thousands of leaked dnc e-mails allegedly showed evidence of misconduct amongst the party elite. meantime the rules committee is voting on whether to keep the controversial super delegate system in

get wages up. afghanistan is in national mourning after two suicide bombers killed 80 people in kabul today. the explosions went off during a demonstration by afghanistan's ethnic azar are a community. authorities say the protestors were demanding a large power project in a town west of kabul. afghanistan's interior ministry has issued a ban on public gatherings of all types for the next 10 days. the islamic state group claimed responsibility for the bombing. tonight we are awaiting the identity of a driver suspect in there a deadly hit and run in south philadelphia. this crash happened at about 8 o'clock last night at 21st and jackson. police say the driver ignored a stop sign, hit a minivan then skidd into a family of three. a 38-year-old woman was killed. her husband and son are being treated at the hospital tonight. the driver took off but was apprehended less than half a mile or so away from that scene. police say he will likely face

>> welcome back. more than a thousand people get up early and get moving. it was all for a great cause today. eynon tabernacle baptist church hosted the fitness for either in the run. anita oh has more on who will benefit from this act of generosity. >> on your mark, get set, go! >> reporter: athletes or amateur, large group hit the asphalt saturday morning for the fitness for either in the run organized by eynon tabernacle baptist church. about a thousand people made the four and a half mile trek to eynon's other campus all $7,000 raised will benefit the center for grieving children and teens a place tamika

hamilton and her three children know very well. >> it's a blessing. we need the support to get us through daily. >> reporter: to grieve the loss of her husband, carl. >> he was killed in a car accident two years ago, so we've been going ever he since thennism service are completely free says the center's executive director dr. angel richardson which means these funds will allow them to help evening more children and families deal with loss. >> they're able to go and say this is what i'm feeling, they're not bottling it up able to express themselves better. you'll see better behavior at home and school. >> reporter: reverend relawyer miles says the annual run has raised more than $120,000 for different community organizations in the past 11 years. >> they're allowing us to be a blessing to our community. >> reporter: they chose this cause in september, almost a divine pick as they could have never predicted a year ahead filled with so much pain. >> the violence that we're snowing our communities, the number of stories that you all cover with the tragedy,

they're the organization when they say grieve counselors are going to be on site they're the folks that show up. >> reporter: for this group, the support from each other has been clear whether they're in a grief center or on the ground. >> strong finish. >> reporter: reporting in philadelphia. >> are he we making the magic happen. >> i'm happy i finished. >> reporter: anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> there's an fleet at a out there running in her dress. what a sport. >> got right in there. >> great anyone they're doing there. of course i got caught in the monsoon. >> yes, absolutely. >> monsoon's are for phoenix. the point is it was a downpour. >> definitely a downpour. we had a severe thunderstorm roll right through center city physical. we don't want the severe weather obviously but we will take this rain cooled air. we're down 82 degrees. it's not that cool but in comparison to mid 90's where we were at before that rain came in, yeah, feels great. east winds up around 13 miles per hour. some drip drops still falling down the roads certainly wet right now because of that severe thunderstorm.

we picked up a quick half an inch of rainfall in philadelphia with that severe thunderstorm and the rain pouring down norristown also picking up about a half inch, haddon heights close to a half inch as well with this rainfall that is moving through. philadelphia really the cutoff and points southward where we've kind of hit that convective temperature allowing some of the storms to bubble up over the last couple hours. still have the severe thunderstorm warning in effect that i showed you at the top of the show down the shore. heads up severe warning in effect for 60 miles per hour winds. this particular cell already did some damage across parts of south jersey bringing down some trees also producing some small hail. if you have friends down the shore right now on the beach definitely want to give them a very fast phone call and tell them to book it inside. rain already coming down in beach haven. heads up brigantine down into atlantic city as well as this cell is moving your way from the north and west. philadelphia we're about to get a break from the rainfall, just a little bit of light rain lingering but now the heavier rain has moved into

some of our jersey suburbs. still seeing moderate rain in haddonfield. severe thunderstorm warning still in effect until 7 o'clock for parts of delaware. that left lane is moving in over the state line right now. middleton seeing nearly continuous lightning. stay well far away from this cell. it will move towards i smyrna. overnight an evening thunderstorm isolated in nature but it could be on the stronger even severe side. otherwise we clear out very warm only falling back to 75 degrees and then tomorrow still very hot. 95 degrees, mostly sunny but not as humid. we'll get a break from the humidity tomorrow but he with certainly didn't get a break today. we topped at 96 degrees in philadelphia. 98 in reading. even down the shore high temperature soaring up into the middle 90's but where we see that cooler air, that is compliments of the rain and thunderstorm activity. 79 right now in wilmington. we're at 95 right now in dover. dewpoints they tell us about that sticky factor, some drier

air building in, parts of the lehigh valley right now dewpoints down into the 50 but where you see those dewpoints in the 70's aner 70's it is so down right humid and that will be the case once again as we head into monday and we're going to challenge a lot of records across the delaware valley. the record on monday in ac99 degrees. the record in philly, 96 degrees and we will likely take that as we head into monday, so check out some of these future heat indices. tomorrow more the heat and not the humidity. heat index values not too bad but as we led into monday feeling like 90's even by 9 o'clock in the morning. monday is definitely going to be a day to take it easy. feeling like 100, feeling like potentially 108 in philadelphia. by monday afternoon with the combination of the heat and humidity and on monday it will be broken again by some late day thunderstorms that could be on the stronger side so maybe a stray thunderstorm tomorrow night. otherwise a mainly dry day for our sunday. we start off dry on monday but

again with this heat and humidity in place we are going to see some cells firing up kind of scattered in nature but the storms that do develop late day on monday could be on the strong certainly severe side so keep in the back of your mind as we head into monday but for tomorrow, it's going to be hot but not as humid. topping off at 95 degrees in philadelphia. we'll top at 94 in wilmington. ly getting a little bit of a break in wildwood, 86 degrees for your high temperature but flynn one in ac and then on monday... 91 in ac and then on monday 99 degrees your high temperature with a chance of late day strong thunderstorms. hot on tuesday but less humid, 95 degrees. wednesday, not too bad, 92 degrees. humidity will be tolerable and not as bad as we move into the second half of next week but 90's all the way through. >> this is brutal. >> dog days have arrived. >> i just had to exhale really quickly there. what's going on with the phillies. >> sitting at a baseball game
