and dual wildfires force thousands from their homes in california. this morning, dozens of homes have been destroyed, as firefighters struggle to gain ground. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, the democratic national convention opens today with the theme united together. but this morning, the party is anything but united or together. rocked by another embarrassing e-mail scandal, this one detailing party attempts to undermine bernie sander. the party chair is stepping down and sanders supporters are livid. jamie yuccas is in philadelphia. jamie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. as you said, the dnc chair is stepping down and almost immediate, hillary clinton and president barack obama released statements supporting that decision. the democratic party wants to move on from this as quickly as

possible to make sure the convention puts clinton in a positive light in front of a general election audience. just hours after saying she would step down as dnc chair after the convention was over, many were surprised to see debbie wassermann schultz appear on stage tess wells fargo center on sunday night. the e-mail suggests dnc staffers favored hillary clinton over bernie sanders in the democratic primaries. the vermont senator applauded her decision, but stressed his goal remains the same. >> i think the focus, though, that i am going to go forward on right now is to make sure that donald trump must not become president of the united states. >> reporter: in her first joint interview with running mate tim kaine, clinton weighed in. >> i cannot speak for people who were not working for me who were saying whatever they were saying, i can't speak to them. >> reporter: clinton's campaign manager tried to shift blame away from dnc officials to

russian hackers. >> experts are now saying the russians are releasing these e-mails for the purpose. helping donald trump. >> reporter: security is tight outside of this convention area. authorities are expecting 50,000 protesters each day of the convention. yesterday, thousands of sanders' supporters braved in tense heat as they marched downtown. >> democratic party has been colluding with hillary and they are not being democratic or fair. >> reporter: sanders is expected to push for party unity when he addresses the convention tonight. first lady michelle obama will also take the stage behind me tonight, while donna brazile will act as interim dnc chair. the dems convention is cracking up is what donald trump tweeted on twitter. scott pelley sat down with hillary clinton and senator tim

kaine for their first joint interview. >> reporter: senator, you're going to be a vice president in a white house with two presidents. >> it's an embarrassment of riches. >> reporter: what do you think of that notion? >> i think it's an all hands-on deck time. >> yeah. >> we are going to have a crackerjack staff and we are going to have, you know, great efforts with our congressional allies and others. >> reporter: when with we wrote that question, i expected you to come up out of your chair at me and tell me that there was only going to be one president. >> well, no, because i will be the president. but it does happen to be a historical fact that my husband served as president for eight year, and there is a lot that happened which helped the american people during those eight years. i want an economy that creates more jobs and that is a lot of jobs. i want an economy that gets back to raising incomes for everybody. most americans haven't had a raise. i want an economy that is going to help lift millions of people

out of poverty because given the recession we have fallen back in the wrong direction and i'm also going to be relying on president obama. i already put him on notice. i'm going to be picking up the phone and calling and asking for his advice so we are going to put them all to work. >> meanwhile, donald trump says recent changes to his proposed ban on foreigners entering the u.s. from countries compromised by terrorism is an expansion of his ban on muslims. in an interview broadcast yesterday, trump says he wants extreme vetting. also, yesterday, sunday morning senior contributor ted koppel asked trump about republican party unity and those who stayed away from the gop convention. >> what about the -- what about the elders, the party elders who didn't show up, the bush's, the kasich. >> they are all people who beat me for the most part. i helped mitt romney but i think i talked him out of running in this race.

he should have easily beaten a very badly damaged president and i was very critical of him and that is why he came out against me. jeb bush, obviously, i beat him very badly. kasich, i beat him very, very badly. kasich was beaten so badly and it's hard for people to recover. >> reporter: donald trump had once made president obama's birth place an issue. on "face the nation," cbs news political director john dickerson asked the president about trump and the birther debate. >> reporter: he was the chief birther in america, questioning you. what is your reaction of the fact that he is the nominee of the republican party? >> well, i think it says something about what has happened to the republican party over the course of the last eight, ten, 15 years. if you think about what bob dole or jim baker or howard baker or dick lugger, or what colin

powell stood for, they were conservative, they were concerned about limited government and balancing budgets and making sure we had a strong defense. but they also understood that our system of government requires compromise, that democrats weren't the enemy, that the way our government works requires us to listen to each other. and, you know, that's not the kind of politics we have seen practiced. i think all too often. coming up on "cbs this morning," the very latest on the democratic national convention live from philadelphia including john dickerson and more of his interview with the president. this morning, two major wildfires are burning out of control in california. at least one person has been killed and two dozen homes

destroyed. the larger sand fire in the santa clarita valley has burned more than 3,000 acres and a fire near big sur has destroyed 11,000 acres. the sand fire raced down hillsides evacuating homes and officials say it's the most extreme fire behavior he has ever seen. >> all of the experiences we have seen with fire, that is all out the window. you got to look at the four major fires we have had in this county in six weeks. we have seen fires explode all over this county. >> the fire near big sur has destroyed at least six homes. a dangerous heat dome stretches from the central u.s. to the east coast. miserable, hot, and humid weather with heat index values over a hundred degrees in many places from chicago to philadelphia. folks are dealing with a sweltering heat. heat advisorieses are posted this morning from ohio to

massachusetts. a bomb exploded outside a music festival in southern germany. official in bavaria say the syrian man with the bomb was killed. he had been denied entry into the music festival before the explosion. the festival director said the bomber tried to do it twice before. the gunman took his own life. investigators say the 18-year-old gunman, a germanyian iranian planned the attack for year. he was obsessed with playing killer video games and a victim of bullying. up until last month, he was being treated for depression and other psychiatric problems. a suspect was taken into custody for questioning. tdespite allegations of stae sponsored doping. the ioc left it to individual

june before he was soundly defeated in the california primary. a private plane would have been a break from sanders' image as a guy who is content to sit in coach. "the dallas morning news" reports a crash that killed four people involving the cowboys football team bus. a van collided with the bus yesterday in western arizona. all of the dead were in the van. there were no players on the bus, only staff. the team is on a fan tour as they head to training camp in california. "usa today" reports the deaths of a current college football kicker and a former one in a crash. the victims were sam foltz of the university of maine and michigan state graduate mike sadler. police in wisconsin say their car skidded off a rain-soaked highway on saturday and then hit a tree. "the new york times" reports unlivable conditions in the athletes living quarters at the olympics. the head of australia's delegation cited clogged toilets and leaky pipes and dirty floors and exposed wiring.

the athletes are in hotels as organizers in rio try to fix the problem. the games in brazil are scheduled to start in just 11 days. "time" a surge in applicants to the city of dallas police department since its officers were attacked. applicants are up three-fold since five officers were killed earlier this month. the department's chief opened the door just after the tragedy. >> get off the protest line and put an application in. and we will put you in your neighborhood and we will help you resolve some of the problems you're protesting about. >> the dallas police cancelled academy classes a few months ago due to a shortage of recruits. up next, flying into the history books. a plane powered only by the sun is on the final part of its around the world journey.

pokemon go set an apple store record. it was downloaded more times in its first week than any other app in history. pokemon go was launched july 6th and lets users capture tiny creatures through their phone as though they exist in the real world. says she will step down after the convention. sanders and first lady michelle obama are scheduled to speak tonight. hillary clinton has a lot she need to accomplish during the convention. scott pelley spoke about that with cbs news contributor bob schieffer. >> bob, what does hillary clinton have to do here? >> well, i think she has to be very careful, because, you know, when donald trump was in cleveland, he really came down hard on terrorism and all that. the people in the hall liked him, but outside the hall, some people were, frankly, frightened by all of that. and she has to be careful not to totally discount the threat of terrorism. people are worried about terrorism. she cannot discount it entirely just in order to put down him. but the other thing, scott, is the chaos in which this convention is getting under way. i mean, this has been a year of surprises, but if you had told
