"eyewitness news" reporter greg argos is live at the convention center with a rocky start for day one of the dnc. >> reporter: that's exactly right there brooke. a message from party leaders this morning is that we are going to see a very unified democratic party, a very unified democratic national convention. one they say which will differ very much so from what we saw last week with the republicans in cleveland but the reality is this morning there is a lot of division, a lot of controversy within the democratic party.

>> everybody settle down, please. boo! >> okay. all right. we have a big program. we have a big program today. let's hear -- let's be respectful. please be quiet. >> reporter: that's debbie wasserman schultz the florida congresswoman and chair of the dnc getting booed this morning at a breakfast for delegates. she has nouned she will resign from her dnc position after the convention all due to a brewing e-mail controversy. schultz is at the center of an e-mail scandal where more than 19,000dnc e-mails were released by wikileaks and apparently show a bias towards a lincoln tom nation. many of those leaked messages from top dnc officials cast bernie sanders during the primary campaign in a disparaging light. debbie wasserman schultz will gavel in the convention today at 4:00. but robbie mock hillary clinton's campaign manager get a ambiguous response when asked whether that will still happen during this morning's press conference.

"eyewitness news" reporter joe holden is in the middle of a march at city hall. joe? >> reporter: brooke and jim you heard greg argos live report about the division in the party. i can tell you division here this is the front line of that divisiveness. you can see people out here peacefully protesting and demonstrating. really what their take is on the last few days, the few weeks and all of what has blown up since these e-mails have been reveal revealed. this is the bernie sanders crowd out in force right now and i want to show you there is very very tight police presence here as we show you police holding the line between what is the roads around city hall and then all the way over the distance where this bus is hung up in the intersection. that is south broad. they have a permit to march here from city hall all the way to

the fm dr park. take into account that once these folks begin to move their way south on broad street, that is going to create significant disruption in center city. what we also have seen out here, people hydrating because of the anticipated climb in temperatures to close to 100 degrees. there are medic units here as well as the police making sure that first number one these crowds will exercise their first amendment rights and they do not fall ill doing so. our speakers some folks just march -- had to be 100 inflat inflatable marijuana joint by here so there is as much message as there is pictures and visible images of the division right now in the democratic party. of course, we're going to keep you posted on this protest. this demonstration and we'll be back as things progress down south broad street. that is the very latest life this noon. i'm joe holden cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks, joe. meanwhile hillary clinton is in charlotte north carolina for the second time this month. today she's addressing the

allowed overnight storm passed through the area but did nothing to cool us down today. >> in fact the heat is getting turned up this afternoon. let's get a first look at the forecast with meteorologist katie fehlinger life on the cbs3 sky deck. is it hot out there, katie? we're in nice air-conditioning right now. >> you know this is the first day, guys, i've actually had to step inside in between hits here because being out here for too long is just too unbearable. it's brutal outside. i'll be honest. let's go ahead right to the maps and we'll show you just how excessive it is. everybody is in the midst of some type of heat alert. you've got excessive heat warning where i'm standing here in philadelphia and basically i-95 and all the counties that flank it. heat advisory though posted for everybody else here in the delaware valley. it's a toasty afternoon. take look at these current feels like values. yeah, that's brutal stuff. in dover it feels like 107 already. and here in philadelphia it already feels like we're flir flirting with 100 technically we expect to actually hit 97 right

now we are just shy of 90 degrees in philadelphia. but that's going continue to change as we heat up through the afternoon. you've got some sunshine but notice you've got the thunderstorms also on the way. they'll be scattered in nature, but they will be coming through with bang. we think we can see pretty nasty ones later on today. you can see the tail end of what moved through early this morning. now out to sea on current storm scan3 loop things are awfully quite but eventually we'll start to see that activity popping up here on the radar. so as we continue to talk about the fact that we're tracking storms we're still talking about record highs and also the heat wave set to continue. so while this is the worst day of our heat wave, it does appear as though we continue to string of 90 plus degrees even the days ahead i'll tell you just how long it's actually going last a little later in the show. guys, i'll send it back in to you. >> thanks, katie. coming up on cbs3 "eyewitness news" as expected the dnc is impacting roads in town. >> be careful where you park. warning from the philadelphia parking authority is coming up next. >> despite plenty of warning about restrictions on i-95, it

well on this first day of dnc a reminder for drivers in south philadelphia. the ppa says it will tow cars parked in the median on south broad street while the convention is in town. cars towed by the ppa will go to the swanson street lot and owners, well, they'll have to pay $51 fine. this is not only the first day of the dnc it's the first

day of traffic restrictions throughout the area. >> this is what the morning rush hour looked like on i-95 north near prospect park in delaware county. now, there's a ban on vehicles 5 tons or more on 95 near the wells fargo center and that created quite a backup as lanes were reduced. meisha johnson is live in our traffic center with more on the restrictions and how traffic is flowing now. meisha. >> yeah, good afternoon. traffic is looking actually okay right now. i would like to tell you it's just going to hit our morning commuters but that's not the case dnc in town. it had hit you in the evening as well right now looking outside, what you're looking at dnc closures and checkpoints are kind of scattered throughout 95 north at the platt bridge. this where we have one of those checkpoints right now. additional checkpoints 95 southbound the off-ramp to the 59. you're also going to be seeing them 59 eastbound off ramp to 95. 95 both directions remember between 59 and the platt bridge no vehicles over 5 tons are going to be loud. hence all these checkpoints

you'll be running 92. also you guys 95 ramps to broad street are closed. southbound is open only to you traveling to the navy yard, but they will will be completely closed from 2:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. daily as well this week. so make note of that. well will have that on cbsphilly.com as well as i'll be tweeting out at the wall. 95 between the platt bridge and vine street expressway no commercial vehicles over 5 tons. broad street between washington and packer no parking in the center median. also several septa bus routes are going to be detoured. make note of this. make sure to check your schedules online. you're certainly going to want to do and also, taking a look at the wide view call your attention to this. a side from all of the restrictions that we'll see the checkpoints that we're going to see and the alternate tee detours we'll be experiencing the wide right now is showing all gray. all speed sensors where they are, but for those of you commuting in the eastbound sides, and moving into the evening commute it will get slow around the convention time.

major wildfires in california are forcing thousands of people out of their homes. >> the flames have already destroyed 18 buildings while hundreds morey main in danger. cbs news correspondent maria has more on the fast-moving fires. >> reporter: destructive fast-moving flames have gained new ground two days after exploding north of los angeles. strong wind gusts and nearly triple digit temperatures propel the flames through canyons from years of drought. >> that fire came through like a freight train. >> reporter: as the fire surged toward a string of small communities late sunday firefighters on the ground set up to protect peoples homes. >> this is a fifth year of o on-going drought. so we have very extreme fire behavior. these are not normal times. >> reporter: investigators discovered a man's body in this burned out car. >> unfortunately, we lost one life. we feel that is preventible. law enforcement say evacuate,

that means evacuate. >> reporter: but cliff says he stayed to protect his home. >> i have no been in anything this close before. >> reporter: why did you stay, cliff? >> well, you know, you work so hard on a piece of property. >> reporter: at least 1500 homes in this area are still under a mandatory evacuation perfect example of why this is important two to 3 miles from here there is a product production company sable production. the owners of that business tried to put the fire out with their own water hoses but they were quickly over taken by the fire and that fire basically ripped through them in a matter of seconds. thankfully no one was hurt but it shows you how sporadic and how dangerous this fire can be. cbs santa clarita, california. katie, this morning when i was driving to work at 2:30 in the morning it was 84 degrees. i thought my car thing was broken. >> yeah. it was so warm this morning. then we had the really heavy thunderstorms come through.

they helped cool things down briefly but we're heating right back up right now. we do have very good shot to break a record here in philadelphia. so that's where wee turn our focus first and for most talking temperatures and also talking potential for additional showers and locally stronger if not severe thunderstorms. let's get to it. we got a lot to cover. the records to beat today are as such. in atlantic city got to hit 99 degrees. in philadelphia the record is 96. we are shooting for 97 as we showed you earlier in the broadcast. so we think we'll have new one fort books here today. in reading 96. 95 the number to beat in allentown they've got a good shot to break it as well. here's where we curren currentld flirting with 90 here in philadelphia. but tack another 9 degrees on to this that's where we'll end up later on today and it does feel about 10 degrees plus hotter than this right now. so that's the gauge i want to you use. as you go out the door. as i mentioned earlier i had to step inside from the sky deck after couple of minutes it really is brutal out there. so please take care the next couple of hours will be very

very hot. wear light loose fitting clothing if you can. if you have to be in the sun cite stay out of the direct sunlight. keep your kids, keep your pets cool and of course never let anyone in the car for an extended period of time. storm scan3 quiet for now. here's the front that has crossed through. that's going to get these additional showers and thunderstorms firing up and most of our region now sits in the slight for additional severe thunderstorms for downpours gusty winds small sized hail as pete mayor concerns mainly later this afternoon. so we judge nap future weather by 3:00 p.m. things are bubbling up on the outskirts of delaware valley and start to rumble on in here in time for the evening rush. than ideal timing the further north you travel. it looks as though some of the storms could really wreak havoc torrential downpours for the late evening especially over philadelphia. so nine, 10:00 o'clock this evening we could really be in for some very very heavy rain and frequent lightning like we saw early this morning. all out of here her by tomorrow at least we'll see the worst
