they say would lead to fewer tragedies from senseless violence. our alexandra hoff is on logan circle former congressman gabbie giffords among those making the case. >> alex? >> reporter: after a brutal recovery process gabriel giffords led the pledges of allegiance at the democratic national convention vince in center 12 she was here joined by mothers in charge and cease fire pa to demand an end to gun violence. >> it has been a fight indeed. on january 8th, 2011, congressman giffords was shot in the head while speaking with constituents outside grocery store in arizona. six of the 19 people fired at were killed. congressman giffords was placed in coma and return to the house fire seven months later. >> i've seen great when my life was on the line. now is the time to come together, be responsible. democrats, republicans, everyone. >> reporter: giffords resigned

from her position in 2012 to focus on speech and movement recovery while advocating for tightened gun alleges laying. she was joined at logan circle today by fellow legislators and former governor ed rendell. >> we want action and we want action now! >> my baby. >> reporter: the advocacy group founded in philadelphia called mothers in charge vowed that the second amendment can be upheld in conjunction with what they call common sense gun laws. >> i want better background checks and i want the laws to change so our children are safe on the streets in their communities. i'm tired of bab burying babies. >> reporter: strong message geared toward the november election they've asked supporters to vote out of office any legislator who's do not support strengthening gun laws. reporting live from logan circ circle, alexandra hoff cbs3 "eyewitness news". pennsylvania delegates gathered for breakfast this morning with speakers talking about party unity. "eyewitness news" was at the double tree hotel where

delegates dined before the second day of the dnc. the breakfast featured plenty of guest speakers including pennsylvania's senator bob cas casey. he called for the party to uni unite. >> the process of unifying began long before the convention, but it continues through the convention. it will connell afterwards but i think bernie did great job last last night of fortifying that message and giving ugh a good boost for the first night of the convention and beyond. ly delegates reconvened for lunch and have series of meet becomes returning to the wells fargo center tonight. michelle obama is getting rave reviews for her speech last night. she quieted bernie sanders supporters without even mentioning him by name and didn't use donald trump's name either. instead the first lady passionately praised her husband's former secretary of state. cbs news correspondent julianna goldman has more. >> in this election, i'm with her! while playing piece maker with the democratic party. >> when she didn't win the nomination eight years ago, she didn't get angry or disillusioned. hillary did not pack up gone home. >> reporter: she took few jabs at donald trump. >> the issues president faces are not black and white and cannot be boiled down to 140 characters. >> reporter: she spoke mostly as a mother reflecting on her family's last eight years inside the people's house. >> we know that our words and actions matter, not just to our girls but to children across this country. kids like the little black boy who looked up at my husband his eyes wide with hope and he wondered, is my hair like yours i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves and i watch my daughters, two beautiful intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the white house lawn.

for his wife to be elected president. you can see his speech in our prime time coverage here on cb cbs3. cbs news is covering every angle of the democratic national convention. cbs this morning is broadcasting live from the national constitution center each morning beginning at 7am. then the cbs evening news with scott pelley at 6:30 is live from the wells fargo center. cbs news will have live prime time coverage every night as well at 10:00 o'clock. that's followed by "eyewitness news" at 11:00 right here on cbs3. on the republican side, presidential nominee donald trump is promising to reform the us department of veterans affairs if he is elected president. trump and vice-presidential nominee mike pence addressed the veterans of foreign wars convention in north carolina. a day after democrat hillary clinton addressed the group. he criticized clinton and the democrats and said american politicians have failed vetera veterans. well you may have noticed it feels a little less humid today but still in the missed heat wave.

meteorologist katie fehlinger live on the cbs3 sky deck to let us know how hot it will get today. katie. >> that's thing, jim. because it is still going to get awfully hot today. thankfully you've got couple of these saving graces so to speak from mother nature in that the humidity is dropping off and we don't have to track any storms today. won't that be nice? let's take a quick look though at what storm zap scan has up its sleep. nice and quite here on the radar and satellite bear al cloud in the sky but it is definitely a toasty afternoon. now, the thing is, these temperatures these are your feels like values. they're pretty close to what the actual air temperature s with little bit cooler than this technically we're flirting with or hitting about 90 degrees in most spots. so it only feels couple degrees hotter than that right now which means our dew points have dropped off. so when you walk out the door you'll notice that it's not a crisp afternoon necessarily but it is a heck of a lot more comfortable. with that said i don't want to you, you know, let that keep you from taking care of yourself here. still need to take frequent

breaks on afternoons like this when we hit 95 degrees in the afternoon. even despite that lower humidity. it is a hot day. certainly a hot one for the standards as well. but coming up there is eventually an end to this heat wave and i'll tell you when it gets here coming up. we'll send it back in to you. >> thanks katie. the montgomery mall is currently closed due to a power outage effects parts of montgomery township. a fire call was made just before 10:00 a.m. at the mall with an escalating to two alarms. there were reports of heavy smoke throughout the mall and it had to be evacuated. there is no word on when it will reopen but no injuries have been reported. authorities are verifying the gun permit of a man they say pulled his own gun against an armed robber this morning in wynnefield. police tell "eyewitness news" the suspect pulled a gun and announced a robbery about 5:00 this morning near wynnefield and bryn mawr avenue but they say the intended victim pulled out his own gun and shot the suspect three times. the suspect was rushed to a

hospital and they say he could be linked to an earlier attempted robbery. in other news police are searching for a pair of teenaged carjackers whose early morning joy ride ended with a crash. the carjackers crashed into eight parked cars on the 4800 block of springfield avenue in west philadelphia just after midnight. when they ran away, they left behind two guns. police say the two may be younger than 16 years old. they allegedly carjacked a woman in south philly earlier that victim was not injured. pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane is norristown montgomery county courtroom this new you noon for a final pre trail hearing. check this out. lightning struck the empire state building during yesterday's storms and it was all caught on camera. it's not exactly a rare event. the empire state building is actually hit by lightning an average of 23 times a year. but it is rare for someone to

(laughter). >> that's understandable. you might want to go down to the first floor of the building then. at least we don't have to worry about lightning in this forecast today. >> good. >> no earthquakes either. let's take look what's going on out there. it's beautiful summer day. it's just still hot outside. thankfully the worse of the lawsuit of humidity is starting to subside isn't this an invit inviting view to head on down the shore this afternoon wonderful excuse to take advantage of the beautiful sunshine. sunblock is so required because we have nothing more than patchy white clouds overhead the rest of the day. on skycam3 and all across the delaware valley it is bright and

sunny and scorching because even though we don't have storms and we have lost the worse of the humidity, this is still pretty brutal sun angle a lot of umbrellas definitely a necessary thing here on the shore. let's go to another one of our life neighborhood camera shots definitely a beautiful afternoon further north you travel as well into the mountainous terrain take up towards the pocono region with blue mountain off in the distance. a few patchy white clouds. 90 plus degree days continue. the month of july 12 this season. we've had 20 so far last year at as total we ended up with 37. but officer average about 23, minute plus degrees days. we're on pace to hit the average here probably do just that before this particular wave of heat is actually all said and done. you'll see that in the seven day. but for now we taking to storm scan things are thankfully nice and quiet at the local level. you can see the sort of strung out batch of clouds. that's the front that helped to bring in not only the strong storms last night but also the drop off in the dew point.

in other words, the measurement of that atmospheric moisture and because it's a little bit lower, it just feels a bit more comfortable. but the headline says it all. short and sweet much it's still hot outside. and we're talking mid 90s here the rest of the afternoon. the heat wave continues into tomorrow. still in the low to mid 90s. it continues on thursday. still in the low to mid 90s. we will have scattered showers or thunderstorms especially to the south tomorrow, very pop up variety and really anyone fair game to see a pop up on thursday. friday is the day more widespread coverage of showers and storms returns. end up with more clouds as well but notice we finally break the 90-degree stretch here and it will be into the upper 80s as opposed to the 90s like we have been. meanwhile we look around the region this is where we technically sit flirting with 90 at the airport currently. still only in the upper 70s in the poconos. nice afternoon up north but we are actually in the 90s in a couple of spots. cape may already there. ocean city checks in at 87 degrees. as we log forward in the "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast, well, again, make sure that you taking care. it is still a hot day but just

not as oppressive as yesterday was. we'll keep those 90's through thursday then we finally break that pattern on friday. we're still flirting with 90 but won't quite hit it and keep the much more seasonal upper 80s right through the weekend. but again there are a couple of showers and thunderstorms to dodge along the way. >> i don't mind flirting but i don't like flirting with 90s. (laughter). >> not my cup of tea. >> it's not quite as horrible. >> exactly. >> thank you. >> the solar impulse aircraft operating on energy from the sun has landed in the record books. the solar impulse touched down in abu dahbi early this morning making the first successful around the world solar powered flight since the first launch a year ago the plane has made 17 stops across the globe logging nearly get this 22,000 miles. >> amazing. >> it doesn't go that fast. only goes 50 miles an hour. >> you could beat it on the freeway. >> exactly. >> battery powered at night. unbelievable. >> yeah. quite the feat. >> i'll stick with boeing.
