12:00 pm
right now on "eyewitness news" it is day three of the democratic national convention , right here in philadelphia a. here's a live look inside the wells fargo center where preparations are underway for the arrival of president obama the president is scheduled to arrive tonight and close out a day three with the prime time speech, good afternoon everyone i'm jim donovan. i'm brook thomas along with the president, tonight's speakers are clinton's running mate virginia senator tim
12:01 pm
kaine vice-president joe biden democrats hope tonight's speeches can match last night 's energy. emotions bowled over as senator bernie sanders moved to seal the nomination. >> i move that hillary clinton be selected as the nominee of the democratic party. >> reporter: with that, clinton smashed through the gender barrier as the first woman to lead a major party in the race for the white house. bill clinton turned on the charm, with a deeply personal testimonial for his wife. >> you should elect her because she will never quit when the going gets tough. she will never quit on you. >> hello, philadelphia. >> nominee herself tuned in by satellite. >> we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling, yet. >> on day three clinton's running mate did a test run ahead of the speech tonight that will put him in his biggest, spotlight yet. virginia senator tim kaine steps up to the convention
12:02 pm
stage, as does current vp joe biden, and after last night's focus on victims of the gun violence members of the law enforcement will have their turn, including former philadelphia police commissioner, charles ramsey. >> how do we bridge gap between police and community that does exist in some communities. >> reporter: it will also be an important moment, for tonight's featured speaker, president barack obama. the white house says that the president has stayed up late into the night, fine tuning his case for clinton, as well as his personal legacy. the white house says that president obama called sanders after the roll call to congratulate him on the race, and his work to unite democrats. now, the pennsylvania delegation breakfast was held this morning at double tree on south broad street, the delegates are excited about hillary clinton's historic nomination including former congressman margaret margolis, who is the mother-in-law of chelsea clinton. >> i mean this is so historic, how do we make sure women
12:03 pm
understand the importance of getting those issues that are almost always back burner issues on the front burner. you can see that, when hillary becomes president. >> isn't it about time we have a woman president in the ands have it happened in the cradle of liberty. i could not be more excited. >> bernie sanders was addressing the delegation but could not because of the scheduling conflict. the first of four demonstrators arrested at dnc are in court today while other groups prepared to have their say. our joe holden is live near fdr park are protesters are permitted to gather and demonstrate. >> jim, good afternoon. >> reporter: this must be the slowest start we have seen to demonstrators gathering at fdr park behind me is virtually empty, say for a few people standing around, and there is an expectation of possibly, 8,000 people, gathered here, when all is said and done by the even of today, but this has been trouble spot. the security perimeter, the fence, where secret service tell us that they are charging four people, in connection, to
12:04 pm
last night where people were scaling this fence, trying to breach the security perimeter. let's show you the video of it there were four people, at this point, charged by the u.s. attorney, in connection to a federal charge, which would be attempting to breach this area. they are actually five people in total, taken into custody by philadelphia police. now that has been the crescendo, the most visible public problem that we have seen this entire time. all of the demonstrations including black lives matter, bernie sanders, those folks, they have all been peaceful according to the philadelphia police department. in fact, one captain told me that people from out of town have been making it a point to go up to officers on the street and thank them, and pose with them, for pictures. so, many, many different tails to this story, the tail you are seeing inside the convention center where, of course, there was drama for beginning but when bernie
12:05 pm
sanders threw his support behind hillary clinton that some would snuff that out but there continues to be division on the streets, however, it seems to be somewhat, relatively minor. of course we are out here keeping an eye on all things. live at fdr park i'm joe holden for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks, joe. republican date donald trump held a news conference in miami, florida and answered questions ranging from the dnc , to russia. trump will be in scranton, pennsylvania later today but he answered questions for more than an hour. he was asked, about former president bill clinton's speech,s at the dnc last night >> even the story told by her husband last night, he left out the most interesting chapter, i won't get into that the chapter that i really waited for because it was pretty boring, the chapter that i waited for, i never heard. >> in the press conference trump denied any involvement with the e-mail hack that led to the resignation of the dnc chairman debbie wasserman

schultz. stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of the campaign 2016, on the radio with kyw news radio and 1210 wpht, on line with cbs philly.com and on tv with cbs news, and, of course, you're witness news team right here on cbs-3. now the protesters who are out in south philadelphia today are dealing with more sweltering temperatures, as this heat wave, rolls on. meteorologist katie fehlinger is outside on the sky deck to tell us how hot it will get this after afternoon. >> another 90 plus degree day, jim and we're already feeling like it is even hotter then that, in some communities, we've got very high dew point is still as we are sort of right within the transition zone where it is at least a little bit of the dryer air mass verse still soupy. lets take a look first and foremost at heat waves of the past and how worst it could really be, at this point. worst heatwaves that we ever had was back in 1995, it was a 17 day stretch, of 90 plus degree heat and then list goes on here, we have had just shy
12:07 pm
of two weeks worth of the heat wave in 1953 and number three on the list for as long as the heat wave we have ever experienced happened back in 1999. the fact that we are on day six right now of 90 plus degrees, here in philadelphia, it is not all that unheard of. we have seen again far worse then. that storm scan is quiet at the local level. you can see off to the west over portions of maryland right there, and not only some cloud but also some speckles of green beginning to fire up. there is moisture further south you travel so it is more steamy and in dover look at that current feels like. it feels like well a above century mark. feeling more like 91 in philadelphia more a product of the scorching sun, then anything, and then technically we are falling in the 80's in these locations. the as a whole we expect, to basically top off again in the 90's up and down urban most corridors. up and down i-95. 92 degrees is where we expect to top off. it does feel very close to that already in the here in the city.
12:08 pm
further out towards the ocean you go and up to the mountains it won't be quite as oppressive there either, into the mid 80's at best. further south you might see a shower or a thunderstorm. in the meantime the rain chances do start to go on a uphill climb here, in the days ahead. most noteably on friday, coming up later in the broadcast we will show you exactly what the chances will be for the showers and thunderstorms that eventually will rumble through our area guys, now back inside to you. >> thanks, katie. police in northeast philadelphia are investigating a overnight vandalism spree in bustle will ton. check this out where several people had their car windows bashed in, paint dumped on their cars and their tires slashed. this happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex, at bustleton and haldeman, one of the car owners called our news desk with the tip. >> i'm just really upset to know that this is going on in the community. i did contact the police, they came out, but there wasn't a a whole lot that they could do. they stated just to take a
12:09 pm
report. so i'm really upset right now, and i'm looking for to some justice. >> janet davis's husband and son both had their cars vandal ized, in all, we have counted about eight damage cars. well, coming up on cbs-3 "eyewitness news" new developments in the freddie gray case. what prosecutors a announce today about the charges that they filed, in the 25 year-old 's death. plus, the man who shot former president ronald reagan is getting out of a mental hospital.

12:11 pm
who do you talk to for military advice right now? i'm hillary clinton and i approved this message. well, i watch the shows. i mean i really see a lot of great - you know, when you watch your show and all of the other shows... while donald trump watched tv, as secretary of state, hillary clinton negotiated a cease fire in gaza. a reduction in nuclear weapons... took on vladimir putin... and stood up against the trafficking of human beings. a steady leader in an unsteady world.
12:12 pm
welcome back. john hinkley junior, man who tried to assassinate president ronald reagan, more than 35 years ago, will be allowed to leave a washington mental hospital and live in virginia. a judge said that hinkley is ready to live full-time in the community, doctors have said in the past that hinkley is no longer hit by the mental illness that drove him to shoot president reagan on march 30th, 1981. prosecutors have have dropped all remaining charges against three baltimore police officers involved in the freddie gray case. the 25 year-old suffered severe spinal cord injuries, in the back of a police van in april of 2015. he died a week later. gray's death spark widespread, protests, that eventually led to the destructive riots. three other officers had already been acquitted in gray 's death. well, france is deploying an extra 23,000 security forces a cross the country after isis attackers murdered an elderly priest in the normandy church yesterday. >> meantime investigators are
12:13 pm
learning more about the men behind the killing. cbs news elizabeth palmer has more from london. >> reporter: villagers, in this area still cannot believe their beloved father jackes is dead. eighty-five years old he was a catholic priest for more than six decade and he was murdered on tuesday during mass when two men broke in the church, and slit his throat. one of them was this man, social media pictures appear to show him as a youngster growing up in northern france. but sometime in 205 he was suddenly radicalized. twice he tried to go and fight for isis in syria and was arrested under france's terrorism laws. at the time of the attack he was await willing trial living with his parent and wearing an electronic tag. this was a classmate. >> we tried to bring him to his fences, he says but he would quote the koran saying france is land of the un believers and we should go
12:14 pm
to syria and fight. there have been at least 12 attacks of this kind in europe in less than two years. most of the attackers had a history of petty crime, some had a history of mental ill ness. and, all were vulnerable to violent extremist propaganda that would suddenly turn them into mass murderers. elizabeth vargas for cbs news, london. orlando nightclub the scene of the deadly mass shooting, may be a memorial. pulse's recently created a non-profit charity to fund, aid in the construction of the permanent memorial. the charity is called one pulse foundation. the goal, it is for the memorial to be on pulse site but mayor buddy dyer says that is still in the works. >> what you want to do is do an appropriate, permanent, memorial, and i want to make sure that we get a lot of input from the affected communities, and the city. >> people throughout the country continue to pay their respects to the 49 people
12:15 pm
killed. and the 53 others that were hurt. remember the ice bucket challenge? people dumping freezing cold water on their heads all in the name of curing a deadly disease. >> it turns out on line craze made a huge difference in the fight against als, we will show you how just ahead. >> fantastic. we are looking ahead to another very scorching afternoon and eventually there will be a break in the heat, but not just yet, however, we will tell you when to expect that cool down coming up.

welcome back. the als a so, says money raised through ice bucket challenged helped fund a major
12:18 pm
discovery about the disease. scientists found a gene they say contribute toss als and they are now a step closer to developing a therapy. the ice bucket challenge became a viral sensation in 2014 raising more than 100 million-dollar, towards finding a cure. this is file video of philadelphia district attorney seth williams taking part in that challenge. i think all of us did, didn't we. >> i did it, yeah. >> brook, did you do it. >> i wrote a check for a hundred dollars. >> that is just as awesome. >> that is just as awesome. >> i didn't say it. i didn't say it. >> i knew the hair wasn't going to get wet. >> yes, and, the end of my show, guys, that day. it happened at 12:28, and... >> yes. >> you might want to throw a bucket of ice over your head on a day like this. it is hot. but, regardless, it is still
12:19 pm
very hot afternoon. back in the 90's for yet another day. we do think we will cap this off at seven days and then start to see much more seasonal weather. in the meantime more showers, thunderstorms make their arrival in our forecast as well. lets take a look at july so far. we will go back in time and looking at the numbers here and as it stands to average we are, looking pretty toasty for the month of july thus far but we definitely have seen hotter months of july, in recent years. so, the temperature, just shy of three degrees above average that may not seem like a lot? it is a substantial number, just shy of an inch here, three-quarters of an inch to be exact. high temperature we have officially hit, happened a couple days ago we have done it twice already. 97 degrees. lowest temperature, a balmy 65 meanwhile here's another look at storm scan in the last couple of hours we have seen one pocket on the tail end of the loop there of then are storms firing up just outside of sussex county in delaware.
12:20 pm
this is where our boundary has set itself up. if you travel further south it is very, very mug a cross the state of delaware and further are north you go it is not necessarily crisp, cool, but it is definitely more comfortable. there is relief in sight, however from the 90's as well as worst of the humidity. today is not humid. we will track a new cold front that crossed in here and starts to fire up showers and thunderstorms as early as tomorrow regional wide. today we are south of the city still in the 90's for one more day and then we will start to drop off on the thermometer and back to more seasonal territory. still upper 80's. still warm but we will see widespread showers and thunderstorms on friday itself this upcoming weekend there is a chance we will see a typical pop up showers, or thunderstorms, on saturday, generally we will call it the partly sunny. meanwhile is this a trend that is to come for the rest of our summer? at this point climate prediction center is expecting that the majority of the united states is going to be above average, in terms of our
12:21 pm
temperature outlook looking ahead to the month of august. there is a good shot we will see above average days heading in to the new month. but again here's where we stan we will show you feels like values earlier in the broadcast. feels like 100 plus degrees in dover but technically only at 86 degrees. definitely a difference when it comes to humidity verse a place like mount pocono at 79 and feels closer to that. ninety is actual temperature in palmyra across the river and doylestown is a at 83. factoring in at least a hint of humidity to make it feel hotter but also scorching sun. so beach is great place to go. we have a modest breeze, but it is out there the on the boardwalk place, hundreds have of umbrellas, understandably so with that scorching sun. pool is another great place to head this is a poconos shot at camelback, waiting pool, that looks so inviting. if you have your own pool in the own backyard lucky use, great excuse to enjoy to it day. lower 90's expectation. still hot obviously and scorching is the word, to describe that sunshine here
12:22 pm
today. please take care and put on the sun block if you plan to be out in this. we will keep 90's for one more day, we will cap it off with the seven day heat wave and then see temperatures get knock back the at least a little bit by friday and upcoming weekend, i would say you have a lot of thunderstorms icons there, wetest day looks to be friday, anything else, i see your face >> you know me, don't mess with saturday and sunday. >> right now it would be more of those pop up, scattered in nature, generally speaking. >> thanks, katie. >> happening today, the harlem globetrotters down the shore, globetrotters played four games and host four clinics at wildwood convention center between today and sat take and then they're busy. globetrotters star bull bull ard is even busier, he will judge the amateur sand sculpting contest in wildwood crest saturday morning. the globetrotters are celebrating their 90th anniversary this year. that is awesome. >> ninety years. >> they look good for 90 years old. we will be right for all those pokers, prodders, shuckers
12:23 pm
and sniffers, [ inhales ] all giant produce is triple checked. farm, crate, and store. we're focusing on fresh... ...so you don't have to guess. my giant.
