live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. >> smokers in pennsylvania will have to pay more to light up. the state cigarette tax is going up today. we'll tell you how much more it will cost. >> also this morning, police are investigating a deadly stabbing in the city's point breeze section. we have the latest on their investigation coming up. >> and storm scan3 showing rain moving off to the sea, but justin is tracking the chance of more showers today. well, today is monday, august 1st, good morning, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm brooke thomas. we're getting your day started with a check on weather and traffic with justin and meisha. katie is on vacation today. >> good morning, you guys, welcome back t goes all too quickly. i have to say, though, like therapeutic talking about construction this morning, instead of all of the road closures. check point, talking about seriously like i feel a zen

moment. it is out there this morning, guys, but the good news the roads are looking good and dry for now, justin? >> humidity is out there. it will be steaming again today. that will will help bring more showers and storms you but it does get better next couple of days, still little uncomfortable right now. little low clouds, maybe little fog developing into some spots, looking live here, at center city. you can see the tops of the buildings that's a good sign, but later this morning, some of the fog may develop in some of the outlying areas. 77 degrees, it is warm, northeast breeze, at 7 miles per hour, here in philadelphia. we do have one thunderstorm, moving just toward the coastline now, southern ocean county so heads up there. again, somewhat of a slow mover there, could drop some heavy rain kind of like yesterday. any showers that do develop could cause some heavy downpours, maybe lead to some flashflooding because of the flashflood watch that's in effect this evening, mainly just north of the city up through the poconos, kind of got hit hard yesterday with scattered showers, reports of

three, four, 5 inches every rain in some of the showers, heavily saturated ground. just to the north of the city. sixty-five in the poconos, 76 in millville, this morning, temperatures pretty much uniform all over the place like yesterday morning, dew points running real hi, what you want to monitor today. they are in the 70s, so feeling tropical. we're on our way up to 88 degrees, mid 80s at the shore, everywhere has chance for shower or storm, key word here is scattered, and that's minutely during the afternoon, i wouldn't canes he will outdoor plans yet, let's hit the roads with meisha. >> thank you so much. looking outside right now, guys, looking good, looking nice and quiet, what we can expect on early monday morning, we know this will change, this is where we had an accident 95 near girard, taillights moving in the northbound direction, an accident about 15 minutes ago, now since cleared. this is kind of giving you an eye what it looks like out there on 95 south at girard, you can see already starting to heat up just little bit. mondays do start to heat up quicker. vine also open both moving in the westbound and eastbound side.

no overnight construction, but we know we can expect that later this week more than likely. schuylkill near spring garden, looking good. route 30 the off ramp to 202 closed around 5:00 a.m. make note of that. another place every construction, 202 at 29. more construction coming up in a little bit. jim, over to you. >> changes for septa riders starting today septa will no longer sell tickets on trains leaving the city from jefferson, temple, suburban, 30th street or university city regional rail station. instead do you have show your ticket before you go down to the platform. the change is being made due could congestion caused by emergency repairs or monday than 100 regional rail cars. septa still does not know when that problem will be fixed. in other news a man stabbed to death in the city point breeze neighborhood. happened around 9:00 last night in the 2300 block of garrett street. police tell us a man in his 50's was stabbed multiple

times on the left side. officers returned him to the hospital. he died from injuries, no details on suspect at this time. >> police are investigating, a man shot in the arm and leg about 12:15 this morning, near 60th and haverford in west philadelphia. the victim is in stable condition at presbyterian hospital, so far, police have made no arrests. happening today, smokers in pennsylvania will be coughing up more cash, the state cigarette tax is increasing by a dollar per pack. governor tom wolf recently signed the tax increase into law, it is part of the state budget. the tax is expected to raise 430 million to balance the budget. >> the state hopes to use part of the cigarette tax to add more than $30 million a year to the children's health insurance program, 20 million to preserve statefarm land. >> we'll see if we can get

that sound for awe bit later. sadly family business and landmark in gloucester county is gone this morning after five alarm fire. as "eyewitness news" reporter joel holden shows us, not only were firefighters dealing with a burning building, they were dodging dangerous explosions. >> reporter: early sunday afternoon, pour smoke from lumber. it had weathered at least one other fire years ago, phil shared this video with us. >> you can skee the roof collapsing, as plumes of toxic smoke pour from the building. >> little explosions are happening in the building. it just -- >> reporter: firefighters from all over south jersey are confronted with one challenge after another. >> we had come propane tanks popping, later into the fire, early on there were paint tanks popping. >> not without challenge, in fact, to run hoses to fire

hydrant in vineland, pumping water out of nearby lake and placing it in this makeshift reservoir. >> i got the calls, i got texts, i got videos. >> brandon said hits family business has been a landmark in the community. >> sure, we had it since 1945. so it happened. local spot, but sometimes you have to move none life or you got to rebuild and reclaim it. >> brandon said no signs of trouble when his uncle was inside couple of hours before flames errupted. two firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion according to the chief. meanwhile, people like debbie swartz, whose son john is a firefighter, stopped by to see what was left of the well known business. >> this is going to be a real blow to our community, i mean, these are a tight-knit community, you know what i mean, all of these little businesses, just terrible. >> the county fire marshall and prosecutor will now try to zero in on a cause. >> it is sad to see, real sad. >> as questions linger if the family business will rebuild.

in malaga, joe holden, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> philadelphia police are investigating the moment before a porsche s. v slammed into a philadelphia firetruck in center city. the crash happened last night around 7:00 at market and 23rd street. police department says the firefighters were responding to a call when the suvt bone the truck. truck swerved to avoid hitting people on the sidewalk before knocking down the street light and crashing, nearly crashing into the peco building. the fire department tells us no one was hurt. >> two former temple university police officers now facing murder charges in the death of a woman in germantown last week. investigators say, the 24 year old woman was beaten to death friday morning, in a home on the 4600 block of green street. police have now charged 47 year old aaron wright and 41 year alomar keys robinson in her death. temple university confirmed to "eyewitness news" that robinson was fired as an university police offers they are weekends, wright was also an officer at the school before he resigned in 2012. >> a viewing will be held

tonight for a philadelphia firefighter who died while on duty last month. forty-two year old gabriel lee was 17 year veteran of the fire department, and a father of three. lee died july 23rd. his viewing is tonight at 6:00 at the deliverance evangelistic church on lehigh avenue. another viewing held tomorrow with funeral is her vet cents to follow. >> to campaign 2016, election just 100 days away, looks like hillary clinton got slum bump. clinton jumped back ahead of trump in a cbs news poll, battleground states, now leads the republican nominee by 2%. trump held a slight lead last week after the republican national convention. the pole covers 11 battleground states including pennsylvania, meantime, the war of words continues between trump and the muslim father of a fallen us soldier. our natasha brown has the story. >> the parent of muslim american soldier killed in iraq are urging voters to reject donald trump he is a

>> pope francis is talking about his fall last week in poland. he said he was watching an image of the madonna and forgot to step. he told the papal reporters, quote, i let myself fall. that will saved me. if i tried to resist it i would have gotten hurt. francis who is 79 years old was not hurt and he is now back at the vatican. >> later today investigators will meet with the grounds crew of a hot air balloon that crashed in texas over the weekends leaving all 16 people on board dead. the victims include matt rowan and his wife sunday. the balloon ride was a birthday gift from matt. the newlyweds leave behind a five year old son. the pilot of the balloon has been identified as alfred skip nichols. investigators believe the balloon hit power lines before catching on fire, and crashing near lockhart. >> in other news, one -- lebanon pennsylvania woman among two dead when flooding in maryland swept away their

car. jessica was visiting her family. more than 100 others had to be rescued. >> this happened saturday night, small town of ellacott city. main street was transformed fool a raging river, when the storm dumped 6 inches of rain in about two hours. >> i thought we were going to have dinner within five minute it was panic and my friend was pulling someone out of there. i've never seen anything like it. >> all i can say you know what i am happy i'm alive. >> second victim identified as 35 year old joseph belief inches, with his girlfriends who was rescued. maryland's governor declared state of emergency. the time is 4:44. >> justin here with another check on your forecast. >> good morning, only talks about 12 inches of fast moving water to move a car in flooded situation, so just don't try to drive through any flooded roads or even walk three, 6 inches can knock down a human being. seeing heavy rain southern ocean county. these guys don't need it, south of toms river got hard.

little thunderstorm, there southern end every county, moving eastward, cloud, muggy out there, you can feel the humidity, temperatures on the warm side, mid 70s, south jersey, upper seven 70s dover delaware at this hour, mullica hill hanging out at 08 degrees currently and little cooler to the north and west, suburbs richboro, doylestown, quakertown, all low 70s, so as we head through the day again today see sunshine but threat for scattered showers maybe thunderstorm in spots. that chance continues into the evening, overnight hours tonight, tomorrow looks better. now we will wake up probably with some clouds or little sunshine, maybe stray shower in some spots, but notice the drop in the humidity, as well as the temperatures. but today it will be warm, we get to the mid 80s tonight, stays muggy, low temperatures around lower 70s tomorrow, little cooler, mid 80s, for the high temperatures, that's actually few degrees below average, but warm and humid today, scattered shower or storm, up to 88 degrees for the high, tonight, still

muggy, 71 for the low temperature, and here we go the extended forecast, drop in the numbers there, mid 80s will feel pretty good for early august with lower humidity tuesday and wednesday, but we crank the heat back up by the end of the week. looks like low 90s make a return for friday into upcoming wyche. >> good morning to all of you at home, happy monday, welcome back, roads are looking pretty good. this morning talking construction, but that's okay, after what we dealt with the last week, all of the closures, checkpoints, all of that, this lob a piece of cake. nine at past betsy ross bridge, both directions looking good, anywhere we look on the major highways, inlet states, trying to see things heat up just little bit. we can expect that on a monday, heat up quicker than some of the other days of the week. vine open. we do not have the overnight construction, construction elsewhere, route 30 eastbound off ramp to 202, that will be closed until 5:00 a.m.

welcome back, good monday morning, get ready for the humidity to hit you when you go outside. going no where, but do have improvement over the next couple of days, with all of the humidity, still dealing with couple of scattered showers, thunderstorms, specially later today, one storm right now in

south-central ocean county. it is moving off slowly to the east, and this could drop a couple of inches every rain in a short amount of time, just heads up, any showers or storms you encounter, there could be some flashflooding in some spots. seventy-seven right now at the airport in philadelphia, 73 in allentown, some very warm and muggy, and there is a flashflood watch in effect through this evening, for areas north of the city bucks county montgomery county up through the lehigh valley and poconos, again there is area has a lot of saturated grounds. any slow moving storms could drop one to maybe up to 3 inches every rain would lead to poor drainage flooding. today warm, humid, some sunshine, scattered storms, especially afternoon, up to 88 degrees, tonight stays muggy, still shower or storm specially in the evening, with a low of 71, the extended forecast, we do start it dry out little bit tomorrow. 84 degrees, humidity slowly drops, wednesday will feel pretty good at eight an in the sunshine, but the heat cranks up by the end of the week, talking lower 90s returning friday into the weekends, meisha? >> the weekends, all right, justin, thank you. well the roads are looking pretty good, guys, i would say

could deal with couple of showers, yesterday we made out pretty good. it will be humid, kind of used to this. it is august 1st already, crazy, summer flying. what's up with that? yes, we will get rid of the humidity, though starting tomorrow. things do start to improve a little bit in the forecast. heads up again today. you could run into shower or thunderstorm in some spot. and this morning, right around center city, dry, just lower clouds, still you can see the tops of the buildings here, that's pretty good. but could be few ours that deal with little bit of fog with all of the humidity around, we do have one shower and thunderstorm out across ocean county, this hour, on storm scan3, and this is slowly moving off to the east there is area did not need any more rain, yesterday south of toms river, berkeley township, reporting almost 6 inches of rain, that led to flashflooding yesterday morning. the saturday rated ground here, and a lot of areas, north of the city. so that area is under a flashflood watch through this evening. basically, montgomery, bucks county on northward, parts of central new jersey, so again, any additional rai i
