the elevator, and and, raining down elevator shaft that was sheared with another car, and landed on that other car, and record worker was in that car. the good news she has left the hospital but as far as the sergeant preliminary indications are he is in surgery but he will have a long road ahead for recovery. sergeant paulaens of the philadelphia sheriff's department is wheeled out, after a freak accident in an elevator at the criminal justice center. >> we're ordering the building to be shut down until there is a professional investigation and dealing with the elevators. >> reporter: elevators owens was riding in is for record staff, 10:25 it is said car 11th 11th floor and sped up crashing through the shaft ceiling. that caused debris to rain down on another elevator. >> debris from that failure, fell down, the common shaft

and then hit the second elevator. >> reporter: record clerk beverly smith was in that car. >> what happened? >> i don't know. something exploded inside the elevator. >> reporter: smith was taken to hahnemann hospital, along with others treated for numerous broken bones among other injuries. >> it was sort of like in pain, i didn't talk about what happened. >> reporter: statement from the city shows elevator passed an annual inspection two months ago, we are told other banks and elevators were reinfect and will be operational for friday morning. meanwhile tense moments outside cjc as hundreds of people rushed, outside of the building. >> all we heard was a big bang and we grabbed our stuff and just left. my supervisor says let's go, let's go. >> we heard a loud boom and commotion and then we heard fire alarm, go off until they exit the building. >> reporter: one bright spot on this day we're there as beverly smith left the hospital. back live, some more

information, sergeant owens was with us, in the courtroom as monsignor william lynn's new trial was set. he went one way to one set of elevators, we went to another set of elevators around 10:25. by the time we got down to the first floor of the criminal justice center, fire alarms were going off and whole incident had happened with the elevators. of course, again, no clear indication, why this happened, and that remains part of an ongoing, active investigation. live from center city joe holden for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". lets talk more burr last point as joe just mention that had happened right after monsignor william lynn learned he will be retried on child endangerment charges next may. lynn was in court for first time since being released from prison on tuesday. he was quick for the way he handled complaints that priest where is molesting children. state supreme court, overturn that conviction last week. lynn is freon bail on living with relatives. joey merlino ace monk 46

people indicted in connection with the organized crime activity. he was arrested in palm beach county, florida and appeared before a federal judge. the wide ranging charges for the group including racketeering, conspiracy, arson and firearms trafficking. authorities say that the mafia family has operated in new york, pennsylvania, massachusetts and florida, over the last six years. and philadelphia police need your help finding a man wanted for viciously attacking a woman in the frankford section. that is not the only crime he is accused of committing this is surveillance video of the man they are looking for. police say that he grabbed a woman last month and then choke her until she was unconscious. when she finally regained consciousness she was naked behind a building on jasper street. authorities say the man is wanted for a murder and four rapes. also this woman is wanted for buying $18,000 worth of gift card using a stolen credit card. evesham township police say the woman bought the gift card from five different target stores around camden and

gloucester counties. according to police she used a card stolen from a woman's wallet at promenade shopping center in marlton, new jersey. new at 6:00 a wilmington police officer is arrested after police say he paid someone to set his car, on fire. detective reddick's car was burned on tuesday after someone dumped gasoline on it and then set it on fire. at first police thought it was connected to the street gang investigation but a man told police that reddick paid him to torch the car. reddick is on leave from the police department. well, for many years residents in a new jersey town had no idea what they thought were little pieces on have plastic in their soil but it would turnout to be something far more sinister then that. >> that neighborhood in west deptford is demanding an explanation, cleve bryan, joins us now with more, cleve. >> reporter: bright colored flags ordain the front yard here on wood lane drive but this is not a party. as the epa is testing for lead

contamination after finding evidence of ground car battery casings in the soil here. >> this is plastic from the batteries. >> reporter: for 22 year dennis richie had no idea little pieces have plastic in his yard were ground up casings from car batteries. >> this is all around your property. >> all around. >> my wife can't sleep at night. >> a lot of people are losing sleep. >> epa soil testing found that seven out of eight homes on this street in west deptford have battery pieces in the yard. now they are testing 28 more homes in the same development. >> this is hazardous waste. it is contaminated with lead. >> reporter: when epa investigators searched record they found prior to hems being built here in 1989, 17-acre parcel belonged to the man in the battery recycling business. they are not sure help battery casings were put in the ground or if it was illegal during that time period. >> not for me to say whether it is illegal or legal. we are here responding to the release of hazardous

substances, and determining whether there is an unacceptable risk toes exposure to lead. >> reporter: resident say someone owes them an explanation. >> township should have caught on to that when they sent inspectors out. >> reporter: in the municipal building township administrators wouldn't talk on camera, she said township is cooperating with the epa but she could not give me any history about inspections in the neighborhood. >> we had grand kids play here, you know, it is just not right. >> reporter: so far epa found that two properties here of so much contamination that they will have to remove all of the soil off of the top of their yards the at a cost of half a million-dollar. depending on what they find throughout the rest of the neighborhood this could go up in the multi million-dollar range. epa says if they find somebody is responsible for illegal activity they could go after them for fines. in west deptford cleve bryan,

the owner of the trump taj mahal is speaking out for first time since he decided to close casino for good next month. investor carl icahn wrote a letter to the casino's soon to be unemployed work tours day blaming their union for costing them their jobs. icon says union leaders knew casino could close when workers walk off the job 35 days ago. now almost 3,000 workers will lose their jobs, when the casino shuts down sometime after labor day. union officials have not responded yet to icon's claims. new at 6:00 workers at citizens bank park staged a protest, workers there say aramark which runs the food services operations at the ballpark hit the street after phillies game. workers are represented bayou nighted here local 274, and workers want higher wages and

on saturday at least until front arrives. the lets time it out. we will start tomorrow evening. tomorrow is a dry day a few cloud drifting from the western suburbs tomorrow afternoon and evening. saturday you you can see it starts off with clouds, occasional breaks of sun, hazy day not most sunny day we have ever seen. it will feel like a steam bath don't spend time straightening hair or anything on saturday. very steamy. dew points in the 70's. ninety will feel more like 94 or 95. you can see line of of thunderstorms crossing the area mid to late afternoon around 2:00 p.m. they are not every where. a few strong storms here and there some spots may get hit and this could be a quick moving lines and then moves on out. i wouldn't cancel outdoor plans saturday afternoon but have an indoor location to move to just in case a storm targets your area this model wants to split storms and keep them from the shore. heading town the shore would i still plan for these storms saturday evening especially around dinner time. is there a chance it misses. not everyone gets wet but plan
