get these storms that love to form in this environment. we were quiet but now as you can see thunderstorm developed and it is severe warned as it moves through chester county could slow down evening commute, quite considerably in areas that maybe don't knee slow down headed toward 202 and eventually 422, certainly and the schuylkill expressway. you can see the storm, you cane shape it has here lots of frequent lightening as it moves toward my hometown of phoenixville and we have a warning for this particular cell that does include phoenixville, west goshen, radnor, main line, norristown, plymouth meeting places like that until 5:30 this afternoon. biggest threat damaging wind and frequent lightening with this storm this is something we will see over next few days. any storm that does develop has potential to be strong or severe, feeding off heat and humidity. you can see it is cooler behind the storms but still 96 in philadelphia look at these feels like temperatures. feels like 107 in the city. it feels like 118 in dover and tomorrow, it is even hotter

then today. we have just expanded the excessive heat warning, to include the entire region, i'll tell you when that goes in effect and when relief could finally get here coming up in just a few minutes. for now, back over to you. >> kate, thank you. this dangerous heat is on the the mind of those preparing for several big events down in atlantic city this weekend. "eyewitness news" new jersey reporter cleve bryan is there with that part of the coverage, cleve. >> reporter: well, it is august so you expect it to be hot and this time of the year you expect to see big crowds down the shore but with the weather pattern as it is and with several big events in atlantic city including jimmy buffet concert the crowd bigger and weather is hotter then usual. with the ocean to swim in and steady breeze to fight off humidity, a trip to the beach seemed like just what the doctor ordered to beat the heat but even though it is a few degrees cooler at the shore then rest of the region a stroll down the atlantic city boardwalk can still cause to you work up a sweat. >> very hot, but it is very hot out here.

>> reporter: while many visitors cooled off in the shaded restaurants along the boardwalk other people were hard at work. a jimmy buffet beach concert on saturday is one of the several big event this weekend in atlantic city. it doesens of work hours were doing the setup had to stay high traded. >> i mean being as though we are next to the water, and that is definitely felt. it is baking. >> reporter: just off the island crews were also working in the blistering sun to set up for atlantic city try at lon on badder field on sunday hosting 1500 try athletes and several thousands spectators. these two pallets of bottled water will help people cope with the excessive heat. the organizer steven dellmontty says the president is well prepared for a big crowd. >> it will be in the 90's. we have plenty of water, ice, medical. this is what we do. we're pros. athletes train for it. it makes the event better. >> reporter: coming up at 6:00 t what was going on behind the scenes, setting up for that jimmy buffet concert and also, the impact it will have here

in atlantic city. reporting live, cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> cleve, some philadelphia public schools that were slated to close for the summer season this weekend are staying opened because of the heat. thirteen neighborhood pools will be opened from noon to 5:00 on saturday and sunday. eight pools will be closed due to staffing issues. we will post a list on those locations on our web site at cbs philly.com. philadelphia corporation for aging's heat line is also available if you or someone you know needs help beating the heat. that number is (215)765-9040. you can call between now and midnight tonight. the heat line will be opened, saturday and sunday. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky takes the stand seeking a new trial. sandusky made a forceful denial of the child molestation charges for which he has been convicted, and he says that his lawyers did a bad job of representing him at trial. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos joins us in center

county with more, greg. >> reporter: ukee, good afternoon. this is first time we have ever heard jerry sandusky testify, at a hearing this morning he started saying he was completely innocent of all of these charges and he explained why he believed why he deserves a new trial. for the first time, jerry sandusky took the stand, and testified in a hearing which could land him a new trial, and he started his testimony, with these words. >> i'm innocent. that is the first time that mr. sandusky has been able to say in all of these things that occurred, difficult not do these things. >> reporter: al lindsey is now representing the seven two-year old convicted child sex offender and filed a petition for post conviction relief saying sandusky's original trial was botched since his trial did not receive effective trial from joe amendola. >> this particular case there were decision that is were made, that permitted an innocent man to be prosecuted.

>> reporter: lindsey says those petitions including allowing sandusky to be interviewed by bob costas without properly preparing the former penn state assistant football coach, the petition also points out grand jury leaks, waving the preliminary hearing and sandusky never testifying until today, as reasons for a new trial. >> it is so sad that he never got the opportunity to testify, was never until today that he was able to say i did not do these things. >> reporter: joe amendola also testified friday afternoon, afterward he says he discussed all of the deis ises he made during the trial with his client who made finalists about what to do. >> we had many discussions, the explicit discussions about the pros and cons. >> reporter: a hen dole a grease his defense was not effective but for an entirely different reason. >> we were in effective because we weren't given sufficient time f we had sufficient time we could have developed all kind of things. >> now the prosecutors here point out that in 2012 during

that trial sandusky had the very last say in all of these decisions and this attempt at a new trial quite frankly is a stretch. we should also point out that john cleland was the trial attorney back in 2012 and he is also presiding over this hearing and that decision he will make in a few weeks. live from center county i'm greg argos for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks, greg. reputed philadelphia crime boss joey merlino will be released from federal custody on five million-dollar bail. a judge in florida ruled that merlino be released on house arrest and that means he must wear an ankle monitor. merlino is charged with taking part in the health care fraud scheme. he lives in boca rat on, florida and was one of the four dozen reput members of the east coast crime syndicate who were arrested and charged last week. in other news caught in the cross fire six year-old is fighting for his life after police say he was shot with an assault rifle during a running gun battle in germantown. now this comes just days after another six year-old was shot

just a mile from there. now officials are offering a reward for information, leading to an arrest for both shootings. reporter kristin johansen of our sister station kyw news radio has the details. >> reporter: fluorescent spray paint dotted the street, dotting the street from the assault rifle that injured mahaj brown, who was shot several times. his grandmother, delores menendez says he is heart broken. >> he took a lot. his little body was writled with bullets. i just, i just can't believe it. >> reporter: investigators say brown was sitting in the front passenger seat of the gray pontiac bonneville with his godfather when shots rang out, and ended up, just one block from lasalle university. chief inspector karl holmes say several guns were used. >> looking at this and in excess of about 30 to 40 shots were fired from three different weapons. >> reporter: police say it may have been a long standing feud between two rival groups, and ignited over social media, and, just days after a six

year-old was shot in the armpit about a mile away. >> hallmark, this is a row house neighborhood, everybody here grew up here in neighborhood all over this city and we have fond memories of summer nights sitting out and hanging out and playing without it being basically fear of gunfire. >> reporter: brown's grandmother says violence news stop. >> they have no regard for anybody's life let alone a child's life. >> reporter: investigators say mahaj brown remains in critical condition and they are, the three other adults in that shooting also, are quote, were shot but will least main okay. there is a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. reporting live at the round house kristin johansen for kyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> kristin, thank you. philadelphia police hope you can help them track down the man who assaulted a septa driver right in the driver's seat of his bus. this is the suspect and the attack on the route 37 bus on

south broad street on august 3rd. police say that the suspect punched the driver, slammed the driver's head on to the dashboard, and then bit him in the face. if you recognize this suspect please contact the police. traffic is getting back to normal in upper chichester right now but things were a mess earlier this morning. a truck's brakes caught fire, and crews had to off load, the damage cargo before they could move the truck this was at story road and connchester highway around 8:00 o'clock. fortunately there were no injuries. pennsylvania's new car seat law is in effect and that means all children to have stay in rear facing car seats until they are at least two years old. on "eyewitness news" this morning jane tidwell of triple a shows katie fehlinger a demonstration on how little ones should be fastened in the back seat she explain when drivers coming here from out of town need to know about in new law. >> as parents it is your responsibility to do your due diligence to find out what the car seat laws are in the state in whiz you are traveling. luckily here in this region

twenty-two passengers and two crew members were hospitalized after a jet blue plane had to be diverted last night due to severe turbulence. now it was described by one passenger as a seen from the movie, and, with severe turbulence caused aircraft to drop suddenly and began violently rocking back and forth. >> i went flying way up in the air and my lap top flew way up in the air and he was stuffed, flying the whole, storage thing up on top, opened up completely, just for a second and flew out, a bunch of people got hurt. >> reporter: all of the passengers were taken to the hospital were released, by late this morning and flight originally bound for sacramento landed safely more than one hours after the scheduled arrival. there are new plans to remove a construction crane from the site of three world trade center, even though it smashed a window last night. it happened on the 12th floor of the building which is still under construction.

authorities say workers were trying to secure the crane, ahead of severe weather when it happen n1 was hurt. the 80 story building is expected to open in 2018. parts of the southern louisiana are under water a thanks to the effects of a slow moving storm system, flash flooding caused some drivers off guard, cell phone video captured one of the several water rescues in the baton rouge area widespread flooding and threats for more rain prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency. obviously it was a golden night the for team u.s.a. on the floor and in the pool at olympics and if your name is simone, it was, even better. >> insider's louie now joins us from los angeles with more on that, hi there louie. >> reporter: ukee and nicole, it was certainly somebody to be behold. lets go inside the tail of two simons. >> as soon as i woke up i said i have a really good feeling about to day.

medal in the individual swimming event. >> just so happy to won a gold medal and so blessed. >> we will have a lot more tonight on the insider, ukee and nicole back to you. >> something to watch. get all of your hollywood night and i are week night at 73:09 insider on cbs-3. we have been watching some storms. >> we are watching storms and the temperatures continue to go up. they will start to come down in the next couple of hours, not down too far, overnight though, and then we're right backup again, but if you are going to be in a thunderstorm you could be dealing with severe wind gusts, heavy rain, frequent lightening. only positive is once this storm moves out you might get an hour or two, of cooler weather before the heat and humidity really rebound, back in. lets look at is what going on right now. we will go out to the junior/senior school in bernville in the pocono region. you can see what we called towering cumulus clouds an indication that the thunderstorm could be heading that way or just departed. sunnies shining. it is 82 degrees there.

as we look, this camera doesn't look to be working in rehoboth. we will take to you broad headsville where sides are getting darker in the pocono region but still, some sunshine, at least for right now. the lets take a peak at storm scan three. this is showing where thunderstorms really are and strongest one we have is over portions of chester and montgomery counties. very busy time of the evening as well with the evening rush hour, underway, here at schuylkill expressway, 202, 422 and this one could be slowing you down. we have a few more, that have started to develop over bucks county. the lets take a look at this one first and foremost, heavy rain, south of the west goshen, impacting spots like exton, downingtown, up toward frazier, this is continuing to push eastward and it does have heavy rain and frequent lightening and also has a severe thunderstorm warning associated with it. that is in effect for phoenixville, king of prussia, norristown, radnor, west goshen right into newtown square, marple, places like that until 5:00 this afternoon. further are north showers and storms starting to move east out of the lehigh county a and

impacting portions of upper and central bucks. temperatures right now, at least ahead of the storm, it is still very hot. ninety-six in philadelphia. and it is 93 in millville. thirty-nine in wilmington. our excessive heat warning has been expanded. the warning will kick in for outlining suburbs, shore, delaware, far western suburbs, will kick in at noon tomorrow. philadelphia and nearby suburbs remain under that warning. we have been under it since noon yesterday and will continue until 9:00 sunday night. overnight we will drop down to 81 degrees breaking record for our warmest low for tomorrow morning's date, setback in 2005 and here's the next few days, tomorrow's high 96, and here's how hot it feels, 110, sunday's high 95. here's how hot it feels, 107. by monday it is still hot but compared to that it will feel a whole lot better. scattered showers and storms possible really at anytime tonight and then dying down. we will start tomorrow with sunshine and we will see a few scattered but locally strong storms around, late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening, as well, and your

but he did do game one. a win is a win. bird started training camp tomorrow and getting ready for next weeks game with the steelers. today, one guy they should be pretty happy about is carson wentz, and he made his debut late in the second quarter. fans gave him a standing ovation and could in the wait to see him play. overall good first outing for wentz. he went 12 of 24 for 89 yards and a interception. he ran three times for 15 yards in a 17-nine victory. here's doug pederson's assessment of the rookie's debut. >> he came out, and he was in the right frame of mind. he was excited. looking forward to playing. he made some, you know, made a couple of tough runs, you know, for us which we needed and then completed the ball, you know, where it needed to be. the just continuing to refine everything. the fundamentals of just reads, and all of the read it is just something i need to continue to wrestle and drill home but i think i like where

pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane declined to take the stand in her perjury and obstruction trial, this is after her teen rested their case today without calling any defense witnesses. "eyewitness news" continues at 5:30, good evening, i'm nicole brewer. guess case off tonight. >> i'm ukee washington. penn state will be in the hand of the jury. rahel solomon was in the courtroom in norristown when kane's defense tried, to have the whole case thrown out. friday's testimony, started with a reporter whose news

article is at the heart of the perjury on trucks case begins pennsylvania attorney general, kathleen kane. on the stand chris bren on would not the say who sent him secret grand jury documents, citing pennsylvania shield law that protects reporters from revealing their sources. those documents led to a june 2014 article, about an investigation in, to the finances of prominent former philadelphia naacp president jerry mondesire. his fiance, catherine hicks testified that the article damage his reputation and led to his health deteriorating saying that the stress took a toll, definitely. mondesire passed away in october 2015, and he was never charged. after three and a half days of testimony the prosecution rested, and after the judge denied the defense's request to throw out the case, for a lack of direct evidence, defense also rested without calling a single witness. the defense only had this to say after court was dismissed. >> now we will get to the next phase. i don't want to comment on

of different goofy type names. we forgot the most, easiest name that we could pick for the breweries and that would be funk, and i was like, perfect so to bring that work in the boil kettle and add hops for flavor. we do a lot of hopy style beers, farmhouse beer and so there is some funk. i work for the electric company but i was a home brewer for seven years. one day i was like, what the heck, let me give it a shot. our flagship beer is citrus beer. that has helped drive more people into our tasting rooms to come check us out and drink more of our beers. really enjoy them. very industry. when you walk into our space, you are in the middle of a brewery itself. we are just taking it slow, last year we did about 1400 bottles, this year we're track for 2200 barrels. our goal, to continue to grow and increase those numbers.

tomorrow afternoon we're close to 110, and then on sunday pretty much the same story, 106, 107, before the storms come through, we will see that back off in the beginning to get into your monday and early part of next week but overnight we could still see a couple showers and storms mainly south of philadelphia, and as we head into the overnight hours. for your saturday and sunday temperatures in the mid 90's, monday we're still at 90 degrees, relief, as humidity does begin to drop just slightly but still chance for thunderstorm, tuesday and wednesday we are in the upper 80's but still we have got the threat for showers and thunderstorms, each day, right through the end of the next week as than unsettled pattern continues. switching gears now new research found that greenland sharks may actually be older, get this then the united states. way they have figured that out is cool, meteorologist lauren casey has that story from the einstein health care science center.

>> reporter: scientists estimate the shark which only grow about a half inch a year can live up to 400 years old. this revelation could help scientists learn about aging and humans. >> wow. >> they have been in the depths for centuries looking more like half blind weather beaten rocks than sharks. in the ice cold water of arctic and north atlantic they pray on smaller fish. their only predator is other greenland shark. scientists say they have determine the ages of the sharks by looking deep into their eyes. lens is made up of proteins that build up overtime. using radioactive carbon dating they were able to count them out like rings on a tree. they estimated the largest shark was most likely 392 years old give or take 120 years. doctor david agus said they found one important time stamp. >> the carbon going through 1960's when nuclear bombs were being tested off greenland and you could see radiation in the eyes there. if you look deeper and

good evening everyone i'm's ukee washington. i'm nicole brewer in for jessica dean. lets get over to meteorologist kate bilo in the cbs-3 weather center with more, hi there, kate. >> we have a lot of weather hazards to talk about heading in the weekend. the not only extreme heat and humidity but threat for locally strong, even flooding storms and that threat will take news to next week. you can see storms blossomed on the radar here, we have had one very strong storm over chester county, a few more in the lehigh valley. those have pushed mainly into portions of north jersey and this one has weaken. we could see a few showers making their way this to delaware county right now and also over center city philadelphia just a few light showers, does not look like much lightening with it. that is good news. we're also seeing showers and storms back to the west and these could continue their eastward movement and bring us threat for additional showers and thunderstorms. really at anytime this evening and into the overnight hours. if you have outdoor plans, heading out to dinner in the city, something like that keep an eye to the s
