storms tonight. good evening everyone i'm's ukee washington. i'm nicole brewer in for jessica dean. lets get over to meteorologist kate bilo in the cbs-3 weather center with more, hi there, kate. >> we have a lot of weather hazards to talk about heading in the weekend. the not only extreme heat and humidity but threat for locally strong, even flooding storms and that threat will take news to next week. you can see storms blossomed on the radar here, we have had one very strong storm over chester county, a few more in the lehigh valley. those have pushed mainly into portions of north jersey and this one has weaken. we could see a few showers making their way this to delaware county right now and also over center city philadelphia just a few light showers, does not look like much lightening with it. that is good news. we're also seeing showers and storms back to the west and these could continue their eastward movement and bring us threat for additional showers and thunderstorms. really at anytime this evening and into the overnight hours. if you have outdoor plans, heading out to dinner in the city, something like that keep an eye to the sky we may get

caught in the downpour. our high today reached 97 degrees, and that makes it a tie for the hottest day of the year plus we had couple 97 y but heat index reached 109, and it may get even hotter, tomorrow. temperatures right now have back off just a little bit a at 94 degrees in philadelphia 92 millville. eighty-four allentown in the wake of the rain. we have improvement if you can get a thunderstorm to move through but heat index values from the city on south where we haven't had any storm activity still feeling like the triple digits, look at dover, 116 the heat index. coming up we will tell you how hot it will feel tomorrow and sunday and when we may get relief from the heat, that is coming up in a few minutes. nicole, back over to you. while the excessive heat warning remains in effect so will the philadelphia corporation for aging's heat line. if you or someone you know needs help beating the heat call (215)765-9040, between now and midnight. the heat line will also be opened, saturday and sunday.

former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky takes the stand seeking a new trial. he claims his lawyers bungled his 2012 trial in which he was fun guilty of sexually abusing ten boys. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos has more from belmont center county. >> reporter: essentially the question difficulties jerry sandusky receive effective council during his 2012 trial for child molestation charges? tonight we're hearing from his trial attorney joe amendola and what he says prevented effective council. >> we didn't have time. >> reporter: that is why joe amen dole, jerry sandusky's 2012 trial attorney says he was not able to provide an effective defense. former penn state assistant foot coach,. >> we were not given sufficient time, and insufficient time. >> reporter: friday amendola testified in a hearing which could lead to a new trial for the convicted child sex offender. but first, it speaks to the first time was sandusky himself. >> al lindsey is now

representing the seven two-year old quick child sex offender. he filed a petition, saying san did you kiss's original trial was botched since his trial did not receive effective council from trial defense attorney joe amendola. >> this particular case there were decisions that were made that permitted an innocent man to be prosecuted. >> reporter: he says those decisions including allowing sandusky to be interviewed by bob costas without proper liz preparing the former penn state assistant football coach. the petition also points out grand jury leaks. waving preliminary hearing. sandusky never testifying until today as his reasons for a new trial. >> never until today that he was able to say i did not do these things. >> reporter: the prosecutors for the state says that the 2012 defense what's effective and it was sandusky who had final say with the decision that is were made at that time. >> now i spoke with al lindsey, sandusky's current tone and says this hearing will continue on august 22nd, that is a monday and we could

hear from the original prosecutors in this case, they could take the stand and testify. reporting here from center county i'm greg argos for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". police say an assault rifle was used, a six year-old is fighting for his life after being caught in the cross fire of a shooting in germantown. investigators say mahaj brown was sitting in the car with his godfather when a gun battle erupted on the 500 blob of ashmed street last night. the little boy was shot several times. three others were also wounded. violence comes just days after another six year-old was shot just a mile away. >> this was a row house neighborhood, everybody here grew up in neighborhoods all over this city and we have fond memories of summer nights, sitting out and hanging out and playing without it being basically destroyed by gunfire. >> police believe two rival groups were shooting at each other, officials are offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. a protest today over the

statue of former philadelphia mayor frank rizzo in center city. that statue is outside municipal services building across from city hall where it stood since 1998. today members of the black lives matter movement who want that statue taken down, staged a protest placing a kkk likelihood on it. >> frank rizzo was king of racist bigot s and every king deserves his crown and that is his crown. >> police exchanged words with rizzo's grandson today, joe masternardo who was at that protest. hood was removed. petitions are underway among those who favor moving that statue and those who want it to stay put. now mayor kenney issued a statement reading in part, i'm happy to have dialogue about the future of rizzo's likeness in relation to its location but that dialogue won't be started and finish over a few days and a few hundred signatures. on the cbs-3 healthwatch, help for severe blood shortage with donations today from

doctors and staff at hahnemann university hospital. now the special blood drive was set up for a doctor recently diagnosed with cancer. >> health reporter stephanie stahl has more on today's event. >> reporter: that is right, today was a big turnout for a beloved collogue, the doctor who is now a patient, but this isn't about supporting just one person, the group at hahnemann says the blood drive will help everyone. doctor andreas is usually in the operating room at hahnemann but the surgeon is suddenly a cancer patient getting immuno therapy. doctor c was diagnosed with leukemia, two weeks ago. >> i was a little bit shocking in the beginning because you are 50, you are in good health, you work in the hospital, you are supposed to be the picture of health. >> reporter: until he noticed bruising and swelling and felt tired. >> what is it like being a doctor and now being a patient, that role refersal. >> it is a humbling in the future. if anything will make me a better physician, helping me

treat my patient better. >> reporter: friend and collogue doctor david stein says surgery department was stunned when doctor c was diagnosed. >> this is probably one of the most devastating pieces of news i have ever heard and when you get this devastating news, how do you act when you do? it is all prompting to us do something. >> reporter: they turned shock into action quickly organized this blood drive. >> not just to serve andreas or hahnemann but to serve the american red cross and all of the needs throughout philadelphia. >> reporter: blood collected here will go to the red cross and be available to everyone, and doctor c, if he needs it for transfusions. people all over the hospital were eager to donate and show their support. >> i think it is nice to know that you have so many people that care but. >> reporter: including his wife and eight year-old son who keep him company and entertained during the weekly infusions. >> he is a better cook, mommy or daddy. >> mommy good who is better driver. >> mommy. >> who is better surgeon.

today a free community resource fair for local families, the day was full of family friendly activities including music, face painting and kid, even learned a few circus moves. participants also had a chance to participate in basketball clinic helps ted by philadelphia native neil jefferson. health screening were provided for those interested. >> it looks like it didn't get in the way of a good time. >> leslie joins with us sports. day of after preseason game number one. >> yes, you know we're talking about the eagles. fans got to see the team in action against the bucks last night as sweltering link. overall it wasn't a bad first game for doug pederson's squad. bird special teams were in regular season form causing a fumble on the opening kick off and chris maragos recovered it. starting offense took three snaps and ryan matthews scored

on track. a few folks outside. temperatures dropped slightly in the wake of the storms but it is still sweltering in the region. we have a few showers trying to move through the city. lets look live at neighborhood network camera. you can see rain drops, on the camera lens right there beautiful sky line of philadelphia in the backdrop, temperature has briefly cropped down to 81 in the wake of the storms. showers and thunderstorms are fizzling cross the region but watch out for these storms down to the south. those can roll through overnight and we could see shower or storm at any time. we have got this one now intensifying a bit again, it bypassed philadelphia and now lightening has returned, over burlington county, new jersey. here's our excessive heat warning until 9:00 p.m. on sunday for the entire delaware valley, poconos are under a heat advisory as we head in the weekend now. far, far suburbs likely high veil, shore, southern delaware this will kick in at noon tomorrow. philadelphia and nearby suburbs we have entered this morning yesterday at noon and it will not expire until late on sunday.

future weather does still show a few showers and storms around even overnight here's 1:00 a a.m. they are spotty. they could be here or there don't be surprised if you hear thunder overnight. tomorrow we will start the day with full sunshine. in the afternoon couple of scattered storms. best threat will be north and west of the city but a few of these could try to drop through in the evening. keep an eye out for. that sunday same story we will start the day with sun and storms redevelop in the afternoon but the heat is really the big story here. here's how hot it will be and how hot it will feel over the weekend. tomorrow's high 96, and it will feel like 110 at the height of the day. sunday's high 95. feeling like 107, and then never thought this would feel like a relief but 90 degrees on monday. feeling like 93. that is a whole lot better early next week but still above average and still with the chance for thunderstorm. overnight stray thunderstorm, very warm 81 is your overnight low. heading in to your saturday this will be the worst day yet, 96 degrees, very hot, very humid, turning breezy in the afternoon with that late

dozen of college students had a chance to see what it is like to work in philadelphia icy government. >> 5160 them were congratulated at city hall this afternoon for completing summer internships in various city departments. mayor jim kenney handed each student their, certificate of completion and invited them to reply for city jobs once they graduate. pretty great program there. >> congratulations to all of the students. >> still to come, setting the stage down the shore, we will have that story

summer concert series kicks off this weekend with the performance by the legendary jimmy buffet. >> "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan is there with the preview. >> parrot heads are here and many more on the way as mr. margaretville himself jimmy buffet is set to perform in atlantic city on saturday. >> we came down for tomorrow's jimmy buffet concert, a concert on the beach has been on my wife's bucket list. we are doing it tomorrow. >> jimmy buffet is first of four artists performing during 2016 atlantic city beach concert series. today we got behind the scenes look at construction of the 125-foot wide stage, that took thousands of man hours to assemble.
