afternoon. not as bad as yesterday we were feeling 111 in the city. eighty-five for current temperature. west wind at eight, feeling like 92 already. tropical humidity levels today like yesterday highs in the mid 90's. heat index up around 105 so heading outside today, drink plenty of water, throughout the weekend and stay hydrated. upper 70's in allentown. 85 degrees in philadelphia mid 80's in south jersey and shore warming up now. quake are town up to 79 degrees coming off a lose temperature of 73. heat index anywhere from the low 70's in the poconos to mid to upper 90's now. interior south jersey feels like 96 in millville. ninety-eight for heat index in dover delaware. hot day for baseball, game time 1:35 at the ballpark with the rockies in town. 93 degrees. feeling like 105. humidity sticks around. late day shower or storm from the city north and west today, not bringing a whole lot of relief but briefly hey we will

"eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live on the schuykill river trail where some got the their run in before it gets too hot. we already know it is hot but it will get worse throughout the day. >> reporter: good morning. it will only get worst throughout the day. we have a beautiful breeze on the schuylkill river, on the schuylkill river trail near kelly drive, lot of people out and about running and enjoying, rowing, those two heat-related deaths a 67 year-old woman from brewerytown and eight two-year old woman from north philadelphia. as far as today we have seen a lot of people. it seems like every half an hour we are seeing more and more people. we caught a group rowing, catching a group running just out and about just enjoying

the sights and sound but there is no escaping the heat, yesterday the heat index was 111 degrees, if you can believe it, rahel. today it will be about 105 degrees. we spoke to a man who came out this morning at 5:00 o'clock to make sure he got his run in as soon as possible. >> right, my big friend big john, says lets get out here 59:00 in the morning. we beat the walk yesterday at 5:30. he suggested we come out at 5:00. not bad now we are done. we did 5 miles. it is feeling good now. we will beat the heat. >> reporter: twenty-one pools in the city were supposed to close because of low staffing, only eight of them have closed meaning three pools are staying opened for longer for kids to play into get out of the heat and get that cool water in. society i officials totally aware of is what going on here making sure people stay hydrated and runners and rowers also doing the same

thing, rahel. >> reporter: david, thank you. a lot of good news for the kids. for a full resource guide on how to stay cool during dangerous heat check out our web site at cbs philly.com. new this morning off-duty philadelphia police officer crash his car in the strawberry mansion neighborhood. it happened at 26th and sedgley streets just before 7:00 this morning. we do know that two people were hurt, in details on how badly they were hurt but the causes under investigation. also new this morning, a car crash frat house in north philadelphia it happened at temple university campus at broad and norris street. police say driver ran across the intersection and crash in the steps of the corner building, driver was hurt in the crash but is expect to be okay, the cause of this crash is also under investigation. developing this morning in milwaukee violence breaks out after a fatal police involve shooting. authorities say a crowd of protesters smashed a milwaukee police car and set fire to another and officers shot and killed a man. gas station and auto parts

store and investigators say an officer was hurt by a thrown brick. shooting happened yesterday, after a traffic stop and foot chase. one of the two people running from the scene was a 23 year-old man was armed with a stolen an gun. office are didn't know it at the time but there were 23 round in that gun. twenty-three rounds in the gun that officer was staring at. >> reporter: the 24 year-old officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative duty, name has not been released. the officer has been with the milwaukee police department six years three as an officer. back here in our region authorities are investigating a shooting involving an off-duty corrections officer in mercer county, new jersey. officer shot and killed a man who was trying to get into his home. "eyewitness news" reporter trang do picks up the story. >> reporter: woman cleaning up the front yard here said tragedy occurred and that the family would have no further comment. meanwhile neighbors say they

were asleep and didn't hear thinking. >> gunfire erupted on vicky court usually quiet street in hamilton new jersey around 4:00 a.m. police found dominic neil with the critical gunshot wound to the head lying by the front steps. >> this is like right here, you know, right around the corner here. it is scary. >> reporter: detective interviewed the home own shore went out to his front important to much smoke between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. he saw neil coming up in the black hoodie with his head down one hand on his waist band and another reaching for the door. home opener shouted to stop and when he didn't home owner fired three to four shots through the storm door striking neil once. neighbors didn't hear a thing. >> didn't hear anything at all, no commotion or anything and i didn't realize thinking was going on until i came out 6:00 o'clock in the morning with my dogs. >> reporter: police did in the release homeowners name but he is a corrections officer. >> he keeps to himself. i know he is a corrections

let's take a look a man believed to be in his 50's is at penn presbyterian hospital lying unconscious in the street he was found at 62nd and graves on july 9th. hospital staff has not been able to identify him or locate his family. if you recognize this victim police want to hear from you. on the cbs-3 healthwatch surgical pain is blamed for part of the opioid addiction

epidemic and now instead of narcotics a hospital has a new way to control the pain. stephanie stahl explains the new approach. >> push against me here very strong, great. >> reporter: four months after shoulder replacement surgery and 77 year-old janet dad hoy had arthritis is finally able to use her arms without pain. >> can you raise them above your head. >> wonderful. >> she had a quick, easy recovery something you do not hear with shoulder surgery. >> women compared to it natural child birth, men compare to it kidney stones. it can be painful at night. >> reporter: doctor david glasser with penn orthopedics say pain with shoulder surgery was managed with narcotics but because of addiction concerned and side effects they found a better solution. >> we are using a special pump administering the anesthetic to the local area, numbing that area for an extended period of time. >> reporter: thinks pain pull that directs medication to the surgery site through a catheter in the neck.

>> placed in certain ways they can still use their hand and be active but won't have the pain from surgery. >> it is a wonderful thing. >> reporter: janet had pain pump for first few days after the operation says surgical scar is her only reminder. >> reporter: three yearsing ago she had her other shoulder replaced and given narcotics which she didn't like. recovery from that was slow and painful. this time the with the pain pump this was like nothing, it was a walk in the park. it was so different. it is like night and take. >> reporter: she was quickly able to comb her hair something that had been a struggle before. >> it is a little nasty today. >> reporter: doctor glasser is doing shoulder replacements with just local anesthesia and not general. patients can be awake. he says that helps them recover faster with fewer medications. i'm stephanie stahl for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and take a look at this crews reached a woman as flood waters swallowed up her coroner baton rouge, lou san a they found her dog alive under

water but three people have died in historic flooding in the southern part of the state. national guard has made countless rescues so far this weekend. crews used a helicopter to rescue a man who was clinging to a tree branch for hours. officials say more than 100 road are cut off as rivers, creeks, overflow their banks, thousands of homes are under water. >> our house has gone under, and our cats, our horses, everything is going under back there. >> pictures you cannot the least place. they are actually still in the big rubber made from last time. i never put them up. >> hard to believe buzz officials believe even more rain is in the forecast. flood watch is up across southern louisiana. as they dealt with rain we have dealt with extreme heat. >> right. >> which has turned deadly as well. >> other past ten years heat is number one weather related killer on average. flood is a close second. >> okay. >> yes, rough weather. tough stuff. excessive heat today. take it easy. air conditioning, plenty of

afternoon a lot of sunshine rain chance is very low. tomorrow will be still humid, dry, sun and clouds 88 degrees. the tuesday better chance for a scattered shower or storm but overall good beach forecast coming up offer next several days. just hot. make sure you have plenty of water with you. comfort index is not great. dew point temperature has come down. we were in the upper 07's earlier now sitting at 74. still feeling insufferable but tomorrow our dew point should be around 70 degrees for next few days and dropping back down in the 60's. we will get improvement as far as humidity levels. we will take it. any little bit helps. reason is a cold front well to our west as long as it stays to the west we are at warm and humid side of the frontal boundary that should pass through later tonight the to bring us scattered showers and storms in spots. not a big chance. best chance north and west of the city. 30 percent chance of that. still staying dry. we will bring back rain chances on tuesday and wednesday.

50 percent chance for another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms. front approaches us later today, maybe a stray shower or two late afternoon during evening hours. front passes by moves off shore and helps to push out some of the humidity. not all of it though but you'll notice difference tomorrow. we are try but then tuesday we will see another round of wet weather trying to approach the delaware valley. these are heat index values this afternoon forecast, over a hundred degrees for a lot of locations from the city southward, near hundred near the lehigh valley. still very muggy tonight. it will feel close to 90 degrees close to midnight tonight. notice height index tomorrow. i mention that had cold front pushing humidity out. that drops heat index. mid to upper 90's for warm spots in the city on southward and cooler north and west. we have a slow improvement as far as this heat goes. we will see a big ridge of high pressure off the coast where high heat and humidity sits around for 24 to 48 hours and then that eventually tuesday that ridge will start

to break down a bit and pushes back to south and west. we will just start to bring in slightly cooler air. we will still be warm, a few degrees above average but more likely to see high temperatures back in the 80's, not mid 90's like today. ninety-six for afternoon temperature. eighty-six is our average for this time of the year. chance for shower or storm late in the day in the early evening hours tonight. still muggy overnight 78 degrees for the lose temperature and then tomorrow hot 92. not quite as humid. sun and cloud. somewhat humid on tuesday and wednesday bringing a shower or storm chance to the region in the afternoon upper 80's and thursday humidity drops. could be a scattered storm. friday and saturday less humid for sure but next weekend as we get close to the average highs back in the mid 80's on saturday. that is something to look forward to trying to get rid of the 90's here. >> looking forward to it, how is that. time right now 8:18. the lets check back with ann evans in the cbs-3 traffic

good morning i'm rahel solomon. lets get out to justin drabick on the cbs-3 sky deck with eyewitness weather. justin, it is beautiful behind you but unfortunately very hot. >> just like yesterday morning, same deal, feeling like 90's in spots when we factor in the humidity. good news today we won't be dealing with heat index over 110 it looks like. more like 105, maybe up to 108 and warm spots, slight decrease in humidity but nonetheless we have to take it easy. excessive heat warning continues throughout the region. exception in the poconos. this goes until 9:00 o'clock tonight. midnight tonight it will still feel pretty oppressive with heat index still up around 90 degrees. as we head over next 24 hours there will be decrease in the humidity but today in the really happening. mid 90's for actual highs, tropical humidity levels again, heat index up around 105 in spots through the middle of the afternoon.

"eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live on the schuylkill river trail where we have been seeing runners behind you. they are trying to get tonight early before it gets too hot. >> reporter: hi rahel, both authorities say that both women 67 and eight two-year old, died from he heat-related illnesses. there were other factors as well both from northeast philadelphia but a lot of people out here today enjoying weather and sunday in the summer but i have to tell you it is hot, it is even warmer then it was 20 minutes ago. we have video of rowers, people that were riding bikes, walking, jogging, really enjoying the schuylkill river trail. we're on kelly drive right now. they wanted to get out here early to beat that heat. i mean yesterday, after all, justin said it felt like

temper. and he doesn't think he can change in time to be ready for it. from there we will step back and we will look at that job, the presidency and talk to some former administration officials including former home land security secretary tom ridge, former defense secretary william cohen, general michael heyden at the top of the nsa and cia, rosa brooks a policy advisor to the pentagon and republican governor mike levet work in the bush administration. we will talk to all of them about the skills required for the presidency. what makes a good president. once we figure that out we will know what to look for in the two candidates running and then, rahel, as always, we will have a political pan tell look at this weeks twists and turns and prepare us for next week. >> this week we heard republicans chris citing donald trump for campaigning in states that are blue in connecticut but help me explain he needs to transition those states to red in order to reap 270 so what other

option does he have. >> he was in connecticut because connecticut is a good place to raise a great deal of money. the question, you know, there was criticism but i'm not sure it was very well founded. challenge for donald trump is as polls continue to get worse for him in these battle ground states they may fall off the list of ones that he can play in so virginia, north caroline, colorado, they are all looking like he is almost down by double digits in those states which means it is harder for him to succeed in those states and in the worth his time. he may very well have to come to that decision. as i talk to people in the republican party they say list is getting short are of states he has to play in and that is harder because that means there is really only a narrow path for him and when patties narrow your opponent can try to block that path because it is not unpredictable.

jeromy blue bell is reporting 89 degrees. not even at 9:00 this morning. eighty-three in philadelphia at bill's house. mullica chesterfield at 82. barbara in willow grove also in the lower 80's the at this hour. we are coming off a high of 98 e summer so far. live look from the hotel bethlehem looking at the final day of the musikfest fest. hot and hume is day in the lehigh valley but heads up later this afternoon. it will be a threat for scattered shower or thunderstorm up in bethlehem, allentown region and some have of those could be severe as well. dew point temperatures right now, running really high. feeling tropical. mid to upper 70's, lower 80's for dew pointness dover delaware. that is nasty stuff. stay inside in the air conditioning. good news is those levels will start to come down over next 24 to 48 hours. it feels insufferable today. dew points showing up in the upper 60's heading in to tomorrow and then through wednesday. we will drop humidity levels.

it does feel better, any little will bit helps compare to what we have been dealing with over the weekend. shore forecast not a bad one, still hot 90 degrees. probably later this morning and then wind kicks up this afternoon out of the southwest. temperatures should return back in the 80's. ocean off atlantic city in the low to mid 60's, not bad, to cool off briefly but make sure life guard are on duty. cold front well to the north and west where we have line of showers and storms. front does work its way east ward but we will see more clouds return this afternoon and get that scattered shower or thunderstorm north and west of the city. through noon time 1:00 a.m. not much happening. spotty shower or two, perhaps a thunderstorm. this is not showing much. we will see more activity then that. things will quiet down later tonight, tomorrow morning not a bad start to the day in the afternoon sunshine, monday, stays dry. then middle of the week we will bring back more shower and storm chances. here's severe threat areas in green from the city on
