events that led to this devastating crime. police say that family visited hershey park the day before they died. good evening, i'm jessica dean. aim's nicole brewer. ukee washington is off tonight. residents of that quiet berks county community are still trying to come to terms, with that family murder/suicide tonight. we have learn new details about the investigation in sinking spring today but there are many unanswered questions. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live with the very latest, anita? >> reporter: many in the community may remember that the youngest daughter willow who is just two years old and survived a heart transplant as a infant. investigators say marital problems and recent demotion at work may have led mark short to kill his wife, three children and then turned the gun on himself. >> their lives were innocently taken. >> reporter: august 6th was supposed to mark a fresh start in yardley for megan short and her three young children. >> megan short was planning on moving her to a new apartment

that morning. >> reporter: but it would be day all of them lost their lives at the hands of the mark short investigators say. >> megan and mark short were having some domestic marital problems and they were in the process of separation. >> reporter: berks county district attorney john adams says mark shot his family and then left a handwritten note before turning the 38 caliber gun on himself. >> it was an admission that he purchased the gun and committed the homicide. >> reporter: investigators reveal time line of events leading up to the slaying. the on july 18th megan short called 911 after an argument with mark and told police she was frayed of her husband. the following day mark legally bought a gun and round in lancaster county. on august 1st he was reportedly demoted at the his job as a loan officer. on august 5th, a day before the shootings, mark took his three kids to hershey park, following day, tragedy. >> these bodies were located in the living room area.

the residents all with a parent gunshot wound. >> reporter: so as authorities previously been called to the home for domestic dispute, could investigators have done more? >> police department did everything that they are legally able to do in that situation. they did everything correct. >> reporter: back in july officials reportedly gave megan short instructions on how to file a protection from abuse order but she never did. she also declined to press charges. officials are urging anyone in the similar situation, trying to leave an abusive relationship to seek help and develop a safety plan. live from sinking spring anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". delaware's attorney general says he will not appeal a state supreme court decision declaring this state's death penalty law unconstitutional. as for those already ordered to die the attorney general said he believes the ruling cannot be applied retroactively to the 13 men currently on death row.

both sides have wrapped in the case against pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane, she's accused of leaking criminal files to embarras a political rival and lying about her. her defense argued kane did not have knowledge of the leak. prosecution spent its time trying to convince jury kane's action where is malicious and motivated by rage. she spoke to our cameras as she exited court. >> how do you feel? are you confident. >> thank you. >> are you confident. >> yes. >> reporter: jury continues its deliberations. >> reporter: another legal setback for bill cosby, in his criminal case, today a federal appeals court reject the comedian's effort to reseal his deposition testimony, about extra marital affairs and the use of drugs to see dues women. the court ruled the appeal was mute because the deposition has been widely publicized. cosby is facing criminal charges in connection with an alleged assault at his cheltenham mansion. day six of our heat wave and tomorrow could feel even

hotter then today, believe it the or not, meteorologist kate bilo is live on the skies deck where she's tracking this heat that is actually a very dangerous, kate. >> it is. if there is a good thing to day we got a tiny break in the humidity. still feels like a very hot summer day but it does not feel like the triple digits at least right now but as you mentioned tomorrow, we're heading right back down that way, with temperatures in the 90's but our feels like temperatures are heading back to the triple digits. here's a recap of what we have been through. today is day six. worst of it saturday when we hit 98 degrees. that only tells half story, it fell 15 degrees hotter at one point during the day. temperatures right now 93 degrees in philadelphia. eighty-eight in allentown. it is 93 in millville. still well above average still in the mid 80's, it still feels like triple digits mainly millville and dover feeling like 96 in philadelphia right now. we're heading back for a feels like temperatures in the triple digits tomorrow.

excessive heat warning remains in effect through 8:00 tomorrow evening. and now a heat advisory will be once again in effect for our surrounding suburbs tomorrow and you can see now we have some storms to watch out for, storms heading our way from the west, we will track those storms and tell you when they could get here tonight. we have more chances of storms in the the forecast but i also have good news when we can expect temperatures to go back to normal coming up as well. now back inside to you. the death toll from this extended heat wave, increased today, the number now stand at four. philadelphia health department says that a seven two-year old man from west philadelphia is most recent victim. tonight health reporter stephanie stahl has more on the dangerous heat and just how much water can keep you safe. >> reporter: science of heat is the longer a heat wave lasts the more dangerous it becomes, and that is what we are seeing around the philadelphia region. those who died from the heat so far were all elderly with

preexisting medical conditions. >> we're seeing a lot of patient was heat-related illness. >> reporter: doctor jack kelly, chief of the emergency department at einstein hospital says while we feel heat that has taken hold of the philadelphia region the elderly often don't react the same way. >> the first thing that goes is our mental status so our nervous system once temperature begins to rise all of your body regulation goes hey wire. >> bottom line is you need some help now. >> reporter: heat help line has been activated by philadelphia corporation for the aging. >> do you want to stay on the first floor. >> we're getting anything from people wanting to learn how to stay cool to people experiencing a medical condition and that is a problem. every year in this country more people die from heat then any other natural disaster. >> you really need to force fluids in. >> reporter: dehydration causes most heat related illnesses but how much water will keep you safe in the heat. >> we should be drinking a 20-ounce bottle of water every hour during these really hot

summer days. >> reporter: doctors say that many of the people who get sick or die from the heat, live alone, which is why it is so important now to check on them, with this extended heat wave, that is become dangerous. in the einstein health care science center i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and if you or someone you know needs help dealing with the heat, you can call the philadelphia corporation for aging's heat line and that number is (215)765-9040. it will be opened until midnight tonight, and opened again at 8:30 tomorrow morning. in other news police say a vehicle struck and killed a 78 year-old woman in center city this afternoon. that accident happened at crosswalk at 15th and locust around 2:30. paramedics rush the victim to jefferson university hospital where she was pronounced dead. striking vehicle remained on the scene, so far authorities have not filed any charges in this case. a 35-acre section of land in camden is being cleaned up to become a nature preserve.

the land shown on this map used to house a sewage treatment plant, that was torn down in 1991. now camden county has secured funding to clean up the land removing trash illegally dumped over the years as well as cleaning up the contaminated soil. they plan to call it crammer hill nature preserve making it a place for residents to enjoy. >> i grew up in this area. i can tell thaw most people in this area don't even realize that they have a beautiful waterfront, just feet away from where they live. >> trails will also be constructed to help people, access the river from crammer hill, and the county will tie the site into petty's island which will be a 300-acre site after citgo oil leaves by 2020. the presidential campaign trail is winding its way through parts of the pennsylvania today. >> we will have that story straight ahead. plus members of the military are walking proudly down atlantic city's boardwalk tonight, our vittoria woodill

that really exacerbate any sort of health problems for people who cannot get cool, or have respiratory issues, humidity does peak again tomorrow and we will feel like the triple digits once again. we have got this threat for thunderstorms just about every day in the forecast. lets look at is what happening right now. we have a few clouds starting to filter in. still a nice evening over center city philadelphia. blue skies. the nice looking sunset if we can keep skies clear until then. why would we not be able to keep skies clear? look at storm scan three which is showing storms moving in from the west. now this is slow moving cell, still hanging out west of baltimore but it is moving and heading our way, but we will get clipped by the northern part of this cell. you can see lots of lightening, down around baltimore area we have got rain to the north as well, this is all pushing in from west to east and lightening and heavy rain will be biggest threat, for this particular cluster of storms, that is what is happening right now and they are heading our way by eight or 9:00 we will start to see showers and storms here

in philadelphia they may weaken by the time they get here thanks to the fact that the sun will be going down. or it will have by the time it get here. showers, thunderstorms expected this evening. another round overnight. you can see, around the clock that is around 9:00 o'clock when showers and storms this cluster of storms to move through and moving through shore points around ten or 11. another threat for severe weather tomorrow. best threat this time is to the north where there is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms. we are in the marginal risk in the late afternoon or evening. we are at 67 for dew point. that puts us between steamy and oppressive. it is better but tomorrow we will feel it peak again, in the oppressive to insufferable range, finally starting to see reductions in the humidity as we head through end of the week but tomorrow at least briefly it will feel once again like triple digits. overnight we are looking at a low of 76. thunderstorms within the next several hours. scattered downpours again tomorrow afternoon and evening. we could see one down the shore and poconos as well. anyone of those could produce

locally heavy downpours. you're witness weather seven day forecast does show an end to the heat wave but gradual, cool down, and we are back to 88 on wednesday, partly sunny, could be a storm wednesday night another chance thursday, days to look forward to look like friday and saturday, still warm but both days could see sun and not as humid, and generally dry, and so keep that and hang on to that. well, it is very patriotic down the shore today. >> atlantic city, soluting special veterans. torey? that is right, celebration has begun for the sixth annual armed forces parade and we have, representatives of each of the military's greatest and courageous, details on this event coming
