a veteran who had fallen on hard times but she was a fixture in the fair hills community. "eyewitness news" reporter trang dough picks up the story now live at police headquarters. trang? >> reporter: natasha friends tell me she had been homeless for years. was days away of getting off of the streets and into a home before her life was tragically cut short. >> she's always, always here every morning. she sleeps here rain, she's always here. >> reporter: until police say a man driving under the influence took her away. >> my heart is broken. you know even though she's a homeless lady, it hurts. >> reporter: 37-year-old woman known as elaine was a fixture in fair hill for years. >> just yesterday i said, no one tells you this, i love you and her words was bye girl. see you later. >> reporter: just before 1:45 saturday morning, police say a 29-year-old man struck and

killed elaine as she sat in her wheelchair in the median at lehigh and mascher. the driver hit a teenager and ran a red light before officers caught up to him. >> don't leave, and whatever happens but you stop there. it's a person. it's a life. it's not no animal. even not even an animal you should do that. >> reporter: even though she didn't have much herself friends say the air force vet amputee gave to others who had even le less. >> she was real nice, you know. she got an extra cup of coffee she got you. >> and people return that generosity. >> i always see her by herself. i always give her food and always give her money. i don't care what she was. >> those same people are leaving her gifts at a memorial that they wish wasn't there. >> the other lady gave the roses right there. the white ones. you know, people show their appreciation for who she was.

>> reporter: the driver is expected to face several charges including homicide by vehicle. meanwhile that second pedestrian that was hit is out of the hospital and is doing well of the for now live outside police headquarters, i'm trang do, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> trang, thank you so much. now we are following brea breaking news at this hour. police are searching for gunman who shot and killed a man in burlington city, new jersey. the shooting happened at york and federal around 6:45 tonight. a five-year-old girl was also injured. police say it's not clear she was wounded or injured while running from the scene. >> fortunately the five-year-old female has non-life threatening injuries and she's being treated as we speak. >> currently we have made progress in this case. i do not have suspect information to hand out at this time. >> there's no word on what led to the shooting. also tonight, three people were wounded during a shoot out in philadelphia's cobbs creek neighborhood. police say the violence started when a 21-year-old man and his

three friends followed his ex girlfriend home on the 100 block of 55th street this morning. we're told the men got into some kind of an argument with 19-year-old neighbor and opened fire on him as ran into his house. police say the 19-year-old's family members then grabbed their open weapons. >> they began shooting back. they hit the 24-year-old male in the leg. they also hit a 15-year-old male with that group of four and the male who was initially shootin g at the house strikes one of the 25-year-old brothers in the stomach. >> police say the family members who opened fire will not face charges since they were defen defending themselves. the ex-boyfriend and the 24-year-old friends shot in the leg will face charges in this case. a 30-year-old man is in critical condition tonight after a stabbing outside of a bar in old city. it happened around 2:00 this morning outside the blue martini near second and mark. there's no word on motive just yet and so far police haven't made any arrests just yet. very hot and humid start to

the weekend. and we could be looking at some sunday storms that will be rolling through. meteorologist lauren casey is in the cbs3 wet center with what expect for the rest of the weekend. hey, lauren. >> hey, natasha. another hot day across the delaware valley. will heth day with high temperatures in the 90's just this month in philadelphia 93 degrees. our high temperature. our average high temperature for today is now down to 85. so well above average. 91 the high temperature in allentown. writ tee warm down the shore as well i was a high temperature of 87 in wildwood. we have fallen back in the 70s but still very warm evening. 77 degrees in philadelphia. so up at 78 in allentown. 78 in he had aring. a few isolated downpours that did develop along the sea breeze very isolated in nature earlier this evening we did pick up .20 of an inch of rainfall in fort washington. burlington county little bit of light rain tall. tenth of an inch or less with the showers that dissipated. lost the heating of the day. storm scan3 is now quite at least in our neck of the woods

looking upland area of low pressure spinning over the great lakes dragging a cold front along with the. showers and thunderstorms developing ahead of this frontal boundary that will move through our area as we head into the day tomorrow. so we do have the potential for some strong even isolated severe storms much of the day delaware valley including center city philadelphia in a marginal risk of severe weather for our sunday. talk about the timing of these storms for our last day of the weekend and then some much more beautiful weather to look forward to next week all that coming up in your full forecast in just a few. >> lauren, thank you very much. the investigation continues tonight into the bizarre death of a penn state communications professor ronald bet figure. police say the 56-year-old were you was murdered in attempt to profit from his death much his body was found at the bottom of the hanson quarry in center county on wednesday. police say had he push off an 80-foot cliff by george. he lived with bet figure and his girl friend. his sitter said she had nothing

to do with the murder. >> not at all. not even 1% do you believe my sister would have done that. >> she admitted to luring bet figure to the area with the idea they would harvest marijuana plants. in western pennsylvania three men died. another was injured when a boat overturned on the allegheny river. it happened overnight in claire i don't know county the boat apparently ran up on the river bank and flipped over. three man died at the scene. the survivor was trapped under the boat and was taken to the hospital the cause of the accident is still under investigation. there is growing concern after florida health officials identify another zika zone in miami beach. five people have been infected. bringing the total to 36 in that area. >> the crowd on miami beach was a little smaller than usual for a 90-degree saturday. some might say you can blame it on zika. >> now that i -- i'm here and i know it's closed i feel afraid

beach before the public fop out. today the governor's office told cbs news the governor did try to call the mayor yesterday and today but was unable to reach him. and louisiana meantime officials there now say an estimated 60,000 homes have been damaged by massive flooding that swept through the southern part of the state as the clean up there continues 102 to us hand people have now registered for federal assistance in the baton rouge area. some families are trying to rebury relatives who's caskets were unearthed by the floods. in southern louisiana the water table is so high that graves are partially above ground. and now fire crews are making some headway at least against wildfires in california. this one is burning near bakersfield where evacuations are still underway. meantime in the town of right wood from residents are starting to finally return home. hundreds of buildings have been destroyed in fires that are burning tonight in northern and southern california.

the paramedic who rescued a little syrian boy from a building hit by an air strike earlier this week is appealing to the world to stop bombing the boy's hometown. five-year-old omran became the haunting image. the paramedic carried him out of the destroyed building. hundreds of people are being injured or killed every single day in the battle between rebels and the syrian government. today we learn thed boys 10-year-old brother died from injuries suffered in the air strike. if you'd like to help victims in syria like this little boy we have information for you on our website cbsphilly.com. look in the news section for the very latest. now the republican and democratic nominees for president on the campaign trail this weekend. some of the appearances were private. donald trump reached out to a demographic that has not embraced him just yet. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has more. >> welcome to the world of

>> back on i "eyewitness news" fugitive who went to great lengths to try to fuel authorities who were after him. sean miller is 31 years old. check this out. he look a whole lot older than that especially when he was arrested this weekend side a home in massachusetts. authorities found $30,000 inside that home and two low loaded weapons. miller was on the run since april. police involved he's involved with a cape cod drug traffic sinned indicate known as the naughty block gang. family and friends are remembering a teenager who was shot and killed after leaving a community basketball game. dozens of folks came out to take part in the tahir barnes

memorial basketball game. the 1584 old was skilled on the baltimore avenue in southwest philly back on july 11th. two other teenagers were wounded. today's tournament was all about the bringing the community today to stop the violence. >> prime mow's duquesne swim club hosted first responders community day. they thanked for all they do for the community. proceeds from the event will be used to purchase bullet proof vests for police officers and also to helpful croft police officer chris dorman pay for his medical bills. if you'll recall he was shot in the line of duty back in june. now going to bat to troy to help fight childhood cancer "eyewitness news" in wip wood for the 14th annual softball and family fun day. the event raises money for alex lemonade stand organized by team

theresa in honor of theresa zig lot tee who lost her live to cancer. her family says this event is a great way to honor her and other young cancer patients. >> my mother was the world to me. so i can't find any other way to honor her, keep her spirit alive by doing what i do and to help these children. >> besides softball the benefit also featured moon bounces, face painting, tattoos, raffles and of course lemonade. over 14 years this event has raised more than $130,000. many cheered on weight lifters in manayunk today. sweat fitness host add block party and it featured a dead lift competition. "eyewitness news" on main street all of the proceeds from today are going to the northern children's services charity. the organization helps local kids in need and lauren you said you were out there. >> i was there. i got second place.

>> is that right? >> um-hmm. >> we with 3-pound. >> 3-pound. that would be me. they were 3.5-pound. >> the big ones. >> the the pecs here. tell us about stormy sun today. some stormy sunday. so we had a couple of storms today. most of us saw a lot of sunshi sunshine. storms in store for sunday on the back side of your system you'll like what that to offer. fall like humidity but muggy night that's not stopping people from getting out on saturday night. getting live look on skycam3 at ocean city, new jersey, boardwalk still pretty busy at this late hour. and conditions they are quite but they are certainly warm and muggy getting live look now at center city philadelphia all is quite a few passing clouds. 77 degrees our current temperature winds out of the south east around 8 miles an hour and that southerly component to our wind know is pumping that moisture back in and again tomorrow we're going to have an even more humid day. temperatures right now generally in the mid to upper 70s still hanging at 78 degrees in allentown down the shore

temperatures in the 70s as well a mild 79 degrees right now in ocean city. sitting cooler 73 degrees in cape may. also in the 70's our dew points once the dew point passes that 70-degree they shall hold it really starts to feel like that in order like humidity and that's going to hold true again for our sunday. with steamy conditions in store almost on the verge of insufferable. this is tomorrow but looking ahead towards tuesday, that's nothing look forward. we fold down on our comfort index to potentially dew points in the 40s on tuesday. that will feel great but tonight it is muggy. not great sleeping weather down to 74 degrees. partly cloudy conditions as we head into the day tomorrow maybe a little sunshine to start but then as we head into the afternoon hours debting much more active. with thunderstorms in the forecast. a high temperature at 87 degre 87 degrees. storm scan3 is quiet for now. all of those isolated thunderstorms we saw earlier in the day generated by the seabreeze dissipated but off to our south and west showers and thunderstorms widespread in

nature moving their way off to the north and east in association with that cold front that will traverse the delaware valley tomorrow. in the morning hours maybe a few isolated showers watch out for that but that's the best time to get outdoors tomorrow because during the afternoon thunderstorms lookin looking liw on the stronger side. mainly east of the i-95 corridor and then ending likely as we head into midnight and we'll start to clear their thereafter. future weather showing us suds around for the first half of the day. few isolated showers into midd midday. start to see more organized activity developing especially in our western counties up towards the lehigh county poconos. late afternoon and evening hours we'll watch out for i-95 core do's he wed into the early evening those storms will continue to move eastbound down the shore but then by monday morning 7:00 o'clock sunday shine returns. no wet weather problems for your monday morning commute. but for tomorrow storms certainly in the forecast looking likely for most of us. downpour threat is going to be high. maybe a few gusty winds there potentially as well.

lightning threat will be high hail and tornado threat tomorrow are low. checking the tropic starting to get active tropical storm fiona atmospheric conditions are not conducive to further treatment. for mow this area of undeveloped tropical activity that is likely to develop within the next couple of days you see all of our weather models here projec projecting poe tennessee shallly the system could make a close approach to the united states. that's something we'll really have to keep an eye on as we head into next week but for tomorrow just keeping an eye on the sky for thunderstorms developing early in the day in the poconos later in the day down the shore. by monday beautiful conditions. much less humid sunshine, breezy conditions a high temperature 82. tuesday morning, 61 degrees would be our coolest start since june 18th. nice comfortable humidity levels on tuesday and wednesday. thursday and friday little bit warmer and muggier beautiful conditions all throughout next week. really nice. >> that's lovely week. thank you very much, lauren.

licks son. going seven innings giving up two runs on seven hits. struck out eight. gomez came into the game and got his 33rd save. phil he's beat the cardinals four-two. eagles returning to work today getting ready for next week's game against the colts. injured players did get back on the field linebacker mikell kendrick returned after missing the first two game. carson wentz threw on the side. they hope he'll be able to play in the final preseason game september 1st. jordan matthews has bone bruce on his left knee listed day to day. there's small chance he could play against the colts. if not he'll be ready for the season opener against the browns. >> i played enough football to where, upping, obviously i know i can do that. is it every ideal, no. especially for me i like to get reps and good out there and practice. all the reps are in season whether i'm in preseason whether i practice week one or the jets week or whatever it may be i will go out and but 1100% into it.
