the heartwarming story behind this snapshot. >> i don't know what made him think bo, but i'm so grateful he did. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, donald trump ended any speculation that he was going soft on immigration. speaking in phoenix last night, trump promised to launch a massive deportation program and his speech followed a meeting with mexico who disputed trump's claim that his country would pay for a border wall. >> reporter: trump told thousands of supporters in phoenix his immigration plan will offer no path to legal citizenship for an 11 million people living in this country illegally, saying criminals will be the first to go. his rival hillary clinton weighed in on trump's trip across the border.

a defiant donald trump is sticking to the center of his immigration plan. >> we will build a great wall along the southern border. and mexican will pay for the wall. >> reporter: while stressing no amnesty for people living in the country illegally. >> you can't just smuggle in, hunker down and wait to be legalized. >> reporter: and calling for undocumented immigrants who commit crimes to be deported. >> i am going to create a new special deportation task force focused on identifying and quickly removing the most dangerous criminal, illegal immigrants in america who have evaded justice, just like hillary clinton has evaded justice, okay? >> reporter: trump unveiled his ten-point plan hours after flying to mexico to meet with the country's president. >> we did discuss the wall. we didn't discuss payment of the wall. >> reporter: while the republican nominee insisted plans for the wall were

discussed, mexico's leader later tweeted he made it clear from the start his nation would not fund the wall. speaking in cincinnati, hillary clinton panned the visit altogether. >> dropping in on our neighbors for a few hours and then flying home again, that is not how it works. >> reporter: a fox news poll out wednesday said the race has narrowed with clinton leading trump 41% to 39%. former ku klux klan david duke praised trump's speech saying excellent speech tonight and enforce immigration laws and america first. >> hena daniels here in new york, thank you so much, hena. trump's stand on immigration has hurt his support among latino voters. the latino vote may be critical in some very important states. mireya villarreal reports on how trump's visit to mexico played with them. >> reporter: in l.a. county, immigration activists loaded into a van and headed to a local

registration office where they helped latino residents to register to vote. for them, this election is personal. >> this issue is so important to the latino community. >> reporter: his mother was deported back in the '70s and later became a u.s. citizen, believeses donald trump's trip to mexico will work against him. do you this see this as weighing against him? >> 27 million latinos are eligible to vote in the u.s. in the 2012 election, 11 million voted and 13 million are expected to vote this year. a new poll shows hillary clinton with a 55% favorable rating among latinos versus trump with 18%. despite a much calmer trump talking about his meaning with pena nieto, she doubts his intentions. >> if he thinks everybody is

going there now, millions of mexicans are going to love him and millions here in the united states are going to love him? he is wrong. he is dead wrong! >> reporter: but there is some latino support for trump, including these people at a recent rally in anaheim. republican strategist leslie sanchez. >> they are independent conservatives and concerned about border security and feel donald trump, being an outsider, can get something done. >> reporter: coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to vice presidential candidate tim kaine about trump's immigration plan and what hillary clinton would do differently. tropical storm hermine is expected to make landfall on florida's gulf coast sometime tonight as a hurricane. this morning, hermine is slowly moving north with sustained wind of 60 miles per hour but gaining strength. hermine is located about 290 miles west/southwest of tampa.

rain from the storm has already reached coastal areas. 5 to 10 inches is expected in parts of northwest florida. flooding has already forced some evacuations. >> they got it up so i'm here to get clothes and ride it out and go back tomorrow and whenever is goes down. >> reporter: life-threatening storm surges are a possibility. some area schools have closed for the day. in the pacific, hurricane madeline has been downgraded to a tropical storm. it missed a direct hit on hawaii, veering past the big island but madeline remains a strng storm producing high surf, strong winds, and heavy rain. hurricane lester is a thousand miles east of hawaii is expected to lose strength as it moves west. it was a 45-minute flight that ended a decades old ban. the first commercially scheduled flight from the u.s. to cuba landed yesterday and our kris

navy pilots are speaking out about a close call on a u.s. aircraft carrier that was caught on video. david martin hat story. >> reporter: watch what happened last march when a navy radar plane landed on the carry "eisenhower." the 45,000-pound turboprop went off the front of the ship and completely disappearing from sight from what seems like a very long time. have you ever had a close call like that? >> we have had some close call but that was the really, really close call there, sir. >> reporter: lieutenant matt hollowell was the pilot of a plane unlike most carrier aircraft have no ejection seats. the only way out for the three men aboard was to crawl out this

hatch after they hit the water. were you able really been able to get out? >> kind of rolling the dice at that point. >> reporter: big roll of the dice. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: three lives. >> a sight that i hope we never see again. >> reporter: lieutenant general kellen smith spoke to us from the persian gulf spoke to us as their plane went off the end. the plane disappeared for four full seconds but it was the actions the crew took in the first second that saved them. smith pushed the plane's flaps down to give it more lift. hollowell pushed the throttles to full power and retracted the landing gear to decrease drag. were you saying anything, like, come on? >> it was pretty quiet, actually, which is probably for the best because we were able to focus on what he needed to do. >> reporter: watching on slow motion you can see the resting wire after it actually snapped whipping krools the flight deck. eight crew members suffered broken bones.
