5:30 am
a tropical storm watch in effect for parts of our area. katie tells us when the remnants of what was hurricane hermine are expected to arrive. good morning, it is friday, thanks for joining us, i'm brooke thomas. >> i'm joe holden. first, here's what you need to know to start your day in the morning minute. >> the bicycle that the victim was riding was broken in half.
5:31 am
>> philadelphia police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run, in the city's mayfair neighborhood. >> police tell us 43 year old man was hit while riding his mountain bike. >> the latest advisory now from the national hurricane center is that hermine is now tropical storm. so it has been downgraded. now that it has moved on shore. >> we've seen lots of heavy rain and it appears very strong lightning. >> if you are headed to the shore for labor day weekend, prepare for heavy rain and wind. >> we are learning more about yesterday's massive explosion, at cape canaveral. air force says the area around the launch pad will remain off limits today. >> welcome to the late show. i'm your host. >> this is my show. why are you doing the monologue? >> sorry, man, i thought who ever leads at comedy central gets the lead. >> that was larry, making a special appearance last night, on late show with stephen colbert, some good stuff.
5:32 am
>> that was very good. cute joke there. it was good. all right, but, you know, katie, hermine is no laughing matter this morning. >> definitely not t starts to head our way, we eventually ends up with a forecast that really does starting to downhill. today at least it is looking just lovely. it is really comfortable outside right now, ever so slight winds flow out of the north, helping to, you know, make it feel sort of refreshing out here, but as we go first to storm scan3, you can see, things looming offer to the south here, some outer band of hermine, now, again tropical storm, headed our way. so, it had a brief spell as a hurricane, but decent organization, just lost its strength in terms of its winds. still, a system that's got quite a bit of winds packed within it, just not as strong any more. but, that said, tropical storm watch has now been issued for our area, it will be lingering right through the weekend for all of the sussex county area, as well as up the jersey coastline from cape may straight up through ocean monmouth counties. so that said, what is the latest with this storm system?
5:33 am
we will absolutely have much more on the track of it, and the direct impact that we may see, but, back to the here on now, 65 degrees currently at the airport, in the 50's in quite few locations, in the most outlying suburbs to the northwest. the winds flow is out of the north, though, in cape may, stone harbor, ocean city barnegat light. pretty much all of the other shore point. feels quite comfortable outside right now, far cry from the humidity every yesterday. as the day progresses you expect you'll see nothing but sunshine, really nice wrap up to the week. the problem is again this goes downhill, pretty quickly, so again, as i mention, coming up we'll breakdown what we know right now about this system, in terms of where it goes, and what it will mean, for the wind, as well as the rain, for our area, details and much more on that later in the show, meisha? >> all right, katie, beautiful day on tap. good morning, everyone, and happy friday. we're looking at the blue route mid-county, looking good, looking just as it should, pushing to the
5:34 am
5:00 hour. blue route looking real nice. tac-pal bridge was up but coming back down now. also, we do have a more serious accident, this is in delaware, route one northbound closed, at route 273. your alternate, your best one, route seven right now, i'll let you know as soon as this clears. but route one northbound is right now closed, again, at route 273. some construction out there, commodore barry bridge westbound, one lane blocked there, and 295 southbound leading up to the commodore barry bridge between pauls barrow, left lane block, this is until 6:00 a.m. speaking of 295, 295 northbound, between route 656 and 295, two left lanes block there also until around 6:00 a.m. then the pa turnpike eastbound between willow grove and bensalem, where we have some more construction out there, casino every lingering out there this morning, two right lanes still blocked in this area. so again, just a lot of con vukovich shout out there this morning, starting to build ever so slightly on the schuylkill at this time. joe, over to you. >> thank you, meisha.

5:48 am
to hurricane, now it has since downgraded again basically now that it has moved off shore. has lost some of its strength, simply, because it doesn't have that source from the water to help keep the strength building. regardless, it is pretty heavy duty system even still with pounding rain and very well organized counter clockwise circulation there. bring it back to the eyewitness weather watch ers quickly here, it is a nice start to the day, guys. here at 56 degrees currently all the way up near the poconos, reporting clear skies, he has northerly breeze, 9 miles per hour, not terribly breast i, crit p outside. also giving us the advice that i would certainly take this, too, enjoy what you have got with this nice weather before hermine gets here. much more on that in a second. we zero in on one more, take it closer into the city, in fact, we go into the chestnut hill section where phil is reporting 61 degrees in the last 16 minutes. and he's got very modest breeze, as well, but nothing but clear sky out there. and we're all keeping our eyes focused south specially weather watchers as we await
5:49 am
the arrival of hermine. and by the way congratulations, i know phil is new grand pop. we switch gears, here is the storm system, zooming it up little bit here, things are still very tranquil. do still have nice clear sky, and really pleasant beginning to our holiday weekends, if you are lucky enough to have the long holiday weekend starting today, at least it is a really nice day for it. but, we talk future rain amount, so jump all the way to 11:00 saturday night. by this point, there may already be couple of showers, that have already fallen, but talking under inch worth of accumulating precipitation by that point. then, look what happens. as time progresses, we start to see specifics of the med yacht shore line, all the way down to delaware, as well, rehoboth beach, for example, picking up possibility, anyway, remember this is model, not gospel, possibility of two or more inches of rain. that will easily lead to coastal flooding, combine that, in tam den, with the fact you have very strong surf, regardless of where hermine ends up tracking you'll be dealing with either moderate to high risk of rip
5:50 am
current right into next week, and that goes for the jersey shore, and the delaware beaches. so if you are headed that way, heed the lifeguard. okay? you're going to continue to hear me say. that will looking forward in the forecast, forecast goes downhill quickly. but the main impact day for hermine from our area is sunday, meisha? >> all right, katie, great advice, as usualment thank you so much. good morning, everyone, happy friday. looking outside, we have an accident, the schuylkill eastbound past king of prussia. left lane clearly compromised, you also have little run over here, pulled all the way taught that right shoulder. this is going to slow you down most certainly. i cannot show you a back upshot right now, so just make note, you can see the people walking across the schuylkill right now. they are all over the roadway. and that's causing everyone to have to slam on their brakes and stop there, and wait, and figure out where people are coming from, who is walking where, whatever. so, you can only imagine, if we were to look behind this, what that back upshot would look like exactly. so if you are just headed out
5:51 am
here, the scrub eastbound, past king of prussia. know that this accident is still out there, we'll get flashing lights, also people out there. so it will be a little hit or miss, when people are traveling past. i would hold off, if i were, if you can, give yourself at least a extra 30 minute, in this area. delaware county 95 north at 452, take it up to the airport. that's what you are looking at. looking pretty darn good. another accident in delaware, route one northbound closed, at route 273. your best alternate is going to be probably route seven, to maneuver around, and also, new city and suburban schedules starting on sunday and tuesday, also, new regional rail schedules starting on tuesday. these will be and i'll be tweeting out this information, like we always say, make sure to check your schedules on line. jep, over to you. >> meisha, not the type of call people in collegeville get often or maybe even ever before. but someone called for alligator to be removed from their backyard. now, at first police thought of course this was some sort of joke.
5:52 am
when they showed up, this was the gator spotted wandering down the middle of free land drive. homeowner was able to capture the nearly 2-foot alligator. animal control came to pick the guy up. we should mention nobody was hurt here. >> yikes. how about this? some pigs are making predictions for the results of the presidential election. >> we'll explain that in just katie: on crime, pat toomey's attacks on me are shameful. he's making it up. of course, anyone who commits a violent crime needs to be prosecuted -- and put behind bars. narrator: katie mcginty will keep us safe -- more police on the streets, better training and equipment, and take on the gun lobby for gun safety laws. katie: i'm the daughter of a police officer, and the mother of three. i'll stand with law enforcement to fight crime, and protect our families. i'm katie mcginty, and i approve this message.

>> we are getting a advanced look at the race this morning. >> really is a race. organizers, take a listen, to presidential candidate. this at the west anything he will cook off. this is in nef add a hillary clinton won the race this time around, it is not a scientific presidential prediction by any means. john mccain took one in 2008. but we're told president obama 's wig won by a snout. >> oh,. >> in 2012. >> did you come up with that? on your own? >> no. >> one of our amazing writers. >> see the mike drop over in the weather center. >> love it. >> whoa.
