7:01 am
heavy rain. this is a storm. it can be worse. the storm is still off shore, not tropical but still very strong, truth is it is an ocean storm but these wind will continue for another, 24 hours. watch out times of high tide, ocean conditions will be rough, wind not so much an issue, we are seeing some sunshine at the shore. and don't let that fool you, the storm is, anytime soon and we may see those cloud build backup. as far as rain, pretty small, steady rain off shore right now, inland areas, great, next 24 to 48 hours and labor day is good, thinking what storm here in philadelphia. sunshine and clouds. tropical storm warnings remain for good reason along the coast and new jersey and delaware, tonight storm strengthens more and tracks more closer to the coast but still stays off shore. that increases our wind. we could still get them to 50 miles an hour tonight and through labor day, and, it
7:02 am
takes its time to get out of here. it could trend even to hurricane for wind at 75 but most of that stays off shore. but sustain wind right now atlantic city 11 miles an hour. so not that bad. still coastal flooding and strong wind that is the biggest threat from the storm as well as beach erosion and strong rip currents for next several days. wind along the new jersey and delaware beaches 15 to 20 miles an hour out of the north, tonight we did get close to 50 miles an hour gusts, same deal on monday, so very windy for your labor day. forecast high 78 degrees. partly sunny skies. windy at the shore at 72. poconos looking good in the lower 70's. we will talk about when the storm moves out of here and warm up in the forecast, we will talk about that in a few more minutes, back to you. as we heard from justin tropical storm her mine headed from new jersey threatening to wash out labor day plans. chris christie has declared a state of emergency for ocean, atlantic and cape may. cherri gregg from our sister

7:04 am
here yesterday say it was much worse at that time. but take a look the beach is pretty much cleared. they have removed life guard, sand to make sure that there were no projectiles that could hurt anyone in the event of strong winds. there is also some sandbags near the sheds that hold the beach chairs and umbrellas, just to make sure that in case there is some flooding here along the beach and high tide goes higher then normal that those items are protect now but so far so good. it is normal here. we're enjoying this morning. people are riding their bikes along the boardwalk this morning. folks are coming from the casino, they have all been opened. people are really enjoying this part of the morning and it doesn't seem to have caused any damper on labor day weekend plans. but flooding is still a concern later today. as we heard, there could be some higher, stronger wind but at this point we're not dealing with that. people are just enjoying this

7:06 am
local ordinary answers, if they wanted to shut down the beach. i find that would probably be unlikely but what could happen that is life guard could simply say that the surf is just too rough, these rip currents are too strong and we will have to cut off the swimming on the beaches and put a swimming retricks in place. that could happen. it has not happened at this time. i think they will come out the here and gauge, we have seen some people, life guard, surveying right now, and now i was talking to a couple of people this morning who told me, that they have embraced idea of coming down giving all of the warnings because it means that there will be less people. we spoke to a woman who said that she arrived yesterday as a lot of people were leaving. >> it is a gorgeous sunrise, isn't it? i'm looking forward to staying down and having a nice vacation. first time down the shore this year. >> reporter: first time down the shore. better late than never. she is prepared to hunker down if need be tomorrow night, with you it is still the shore. still labor day. so you just got to be safe

good morning, today is sunday september 4th i'm rahel solomon. lets get out to justin drabick outside on the cbs-3 sky deck with the jump on the forecast. it looks beautiful behind you. >> it is beautiful. feeling good. looks real nice. we have sunshine mixed with some clouds. this is shaping up to be a decent finish to the holiday weekend. rain chance very low even on the coastline but we are still dealing with that storm, and biggest issue will be strong wind today tonight and labor day and threat for coastal flooding, at least through monday night, possibly into tuesday morning. storm scan three, showing a better picture across the delaware valley. most of the rain stays off shore. maybe stray shower or two gets into the shore later tonight, tomorrow but that chance is
7:31 am
even very low. other than that we will see partly sunny skies through much of the region. wind not so much an issue right now but they will increase again tonight as that storm strengthens as it the sits off shore. tropical storm warnings do remain in effect up and down new jersey coastline as well as delaware. we could be dealing with wind gusts up around 50 miles an hour. storm itself has wind of 65. again may drift further west ward over the next 24 hours as it slows down a bit and then takes time to move off to the north and east but could intensify to 75 miles an hour wind and that would be hurricane force. this is still a strong storm system, just consider this a strong nor'easter that is sitting a couple hundred miles off the coast line. sustain wind 15 miles an hour or less right now. as far as wind go today will be better day at the shore. increasing again tonight, 50 miles an hour for the gusts, same deal on monday. it will be a windy, labor daze long the coast but mainly dry. partly sunny for philadelphia. seventy-eight.
7:32 am
lower 07's at the shore and poconos we're talking about 90's returning to the seven day forecast, we will talk about that in a few minutes. >> sounds good. >> all eyes this morning on tropical storm hermine. governor christie declared a state of emergency for ocean, atlantic and cape may. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio has been live all morning and cherry, seeing some people out there on the beach, perhaps a little advising. >> reporter: good morning, rahel, yes they have been on the beach all morning. i decided to come out the here since i had my boots on and get my feet wet because as high tides comes in at 10:06 where the flood and coastal flooding concern coming in. you can see that these can be an issue. looking in the water here, the tide is pretty, pretty strong. the lots of rip currents coming true here. so for inexperience swimmers this could be a problem but for experienced surfers i spoke to a woman earlier today
7:33 am
she came down here from new jersey city. she said hurricane season is best time of the year to surf. and as you can see now these people are hanging out walking around, people do not even realize that there is a threat of the tropical storm but so far, so good. the wind are light, to medium, at best, and they say that yesterday it was a lot worse but right now big issue is going to be coastal flooding which, as you can see, it is not too bad but we're again about two and a half hours or so from high tide at just after 10:00 o'clock. so if you are going to the other side of the boardwalk folks can't not even tell that we're dealing with these types of conditions, so some of the very peaceful morning. very picturesque and we are just enjoying it as we got my feet wet, rahel. enjoying it as we wait for is what to come. live from atlantic city, cherri gregg for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> i love that. you are out there may as well enjoy it. thanks, cherri. lets go further south to avalon and "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff.
7:34 am
alex, how is it out there for you? >> reporter: it is just picturesque. we are seeing people walk around the beach. take a peak down there, this is typically what would you see on labor day weekend. as cherri was talking about this tide is on its way in. expected to peak just after 10:00 o'clock and you can see that certainly, on this ocean side, but where that will pack a punch will be on the bay. where waters have already been high and it is swelling tide could do some damage to low lying areas of streets. we have seen signs out there warning about that. we're probably seeing real concern for that will be later on, at high tide this evening, and then tomorrow, morning, and then maybe evening as well. so that is where that concern is, now when it comes to this beach, now we want to talk about there being an state of emergency. i want to talk about had what that means. it sound extreme and we are seeing this and like what is the deal. a you will that does is give local officials more authority to make safety changes to
7:35 am
ordinances during that time period. for example, if officials here decided hey we want to close the beach down it is too dangerous they could to that. i don't think that will happen. what might happies given how rough if surf is if they determined it is just too unsafe for anybody to be in there, they could block it off from just swimming. there is, possibility of a swimming ban but i haven't heard thinking like that at this time. it does seem typical, routine and people we spoke with said they were happy to still come in even though they have arrived as other cars were leaving. >> they knew that there was a storm and we saw everybody was leaving and we were only ones on the road coming in. but i'm so happen that i we stayed. it the is gorgeous this morning. i love the cool weather. >> reporter: it is definitely cool. you feel that labor day fall chill thing which isn't so bad. difficult ask if she was willing to hunker down perhaps if these wind get super gusty. she said certainly so.
7:36 am
that is important. it might in the stay exactly as it is right now but good thing to soak tonight while we have it. i'm alexandria hoff, now back to you. stay with us as we track hermine. when not near tv we are always on line at cbs philly.com. authorities after rested two men in connection with the shooting outside an atlantic city casino that left a police officer in critical condition and another suspect, dead. the shooting happened early saturday after prosecutors say that two officers saw a robbery in progress near a caesars casino parking garage. the officer was shot and injured as he was getting out of his vehicle. second officer returned fire, hitting one of the suspects. who was found dead a short distance away. two men 19 year-old mar tell chisum and dimitri cross were charged with to counts of attempted murder, robbery, weapons offences. wounded officer remains in critical condition. authorities in minnesota i had they have foundry mains of the boy kidnaped 30 years ago.

7:43 am
south east of atlantic city. most of that heavy rain does stay off shore. rain chance very low through the rest of the holiday weekend even on the jersey shore. we will get cloud from time to time tonight into tomorrow but main focus will be wind increasing again and potential for that tidal flooding, possibly moderator major depending how strong wind get later tonight early monday morning. persistent north to northeasterly wind pushing water up along the coastline up to the delaware bay just a little bit. tides running high. coming off new moon phase. that means higher than normal tides as well. next high tide times ten and 11:00 this morning, moderate coastal flooding potential. tonight is a concern as well as tomorrow morning for potentially major coastal flooding, higher then normal water levels there tonight between ten and 11:30 is time of concern and then tomorrow morning 10:30 to 11:45. the even monday night there is still potential for that coastal flooding depending on the wind direction f that storm could kick out we will

get more northwesterly wind and helping push water back out. wind not that what had right now, less than 10 miles an hour. yesterday was stronger, even in atlantic city 4-mile an hour wind out of the north. tonight though wind increased, the reason is the storm, still well off shore, tries to move further west, just a little bit through overnight hours, we will get stronger wind energy trying to move inland, possibly, gusts to get to 40 or 50 miles an hour for labor day itself as that storm remains off shore and then finally moves out of here on tuesday, wind back off. wave heights right now up and down east coast from eight to even 15 feet, off the carolinas, but for our beach probably around six to ten, through labor day, so this storm, tough time moving north with high pressure block ago this system until this high breaks down, and it is stuck here. the sits here through at least tuesday. then finally starts to kick out. temperature wise near 80 in some spots, we will see sunshine. tonight comfortable.
