4:30 am
>> live from the broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. hermine is moving away. storm scan3 shows the system as it heads north, while the sun may be shining, this labor day, katie says the bigger threat is in the ocean. she'll have the latest on the elevated re rip countriesing. >> we are in for a nice day today. you can expect to see sunny skies this labor day holiday. katie will also fill us in on when temperatures will be nearing 90 this week. >> and we have information on double shooting overnight, that left one person dead, and another fighting for his life. police say, they found the victim's lying in the street. we're live with an update on the search for a suspect. happy labor day, today is monday, september 5th, i'm
4:31 am
brooke thomas. >> i'm jim holden in for jim donovan. getting your day started on weather and light traffic. good morning. >> good morning, happy lay -- lay bore day. we know we will be more quiet than usual, but two accident out there, some openings that had road closures over the weekend. >> sounds good. luckily the weather again is cooperating generally speaking across the region right now, of course at the shore things are little different. little different forecast depending where you are located today. so we do still have some clouds cover rolling in across southeastern new jersey, still coastal flood warning, as well, for those areas, then down into the delaware beaches. but hermine is still sitting and spinning off shore. see some of the moisture continuing to spin as well, well thankfully off shore. there could be passing shower at the immediate coastline, here is another look though at the system, further inland you go, you end end up with really nice weekends, that generally will continue the closer to the coast, the steadier the winds will be, a noticeable
4:32 am
theme, bit of breeze here and there, especially at the shore, and again, the coastal flood concern will continue. as we track the latest with hermine, notice, even in the next couple every days, this is still pretty close to the coast. today, tomorrow, into wednesday, still little too close for comfort. so in short, the bottom line is that we will continue to have to deal with rough surf, very dangerous rip currents, and my advice is this, even if it looks nice outside, you want to just stay on shore. so looks can be deceiving at the coastline today. we'll have more on not just those impacts, but also, the rest of the regional forecast in the seven day later in the broadcast. >> great advice, all right, katie, thank youment looking outside, this is one of the two dent, the boulevard northbound off ramp to wissahickon right now closed one carry suppose is facing all the way on it side. that's what we are hearing, little more serious. but you can see the crews out there, however, when we look at the traffic going by there, obviously, a, still early, b, it is a holiday, it is labor day, traffic around that not
4:33 am
bad at all. vine open overnight, not closed for the construction, vine is looking pretty good. this is a shot ben franklin parkway art museum circle, there it is right there. and of course we had made in america all weekends long. so, with that being said, take a look at this, ben franklin parkway between the art museum circle and 20th street, re-opening right around 5:00 a.m. then spring garden street, at pennsylvania avenue, that's also re-opening at 5:00 a.m. so a loft closure experiencing all weekend just listing in the next 30 minute hopefully or so, brooke, over to you. >> you know, many people headed down the shore to celebrate the long holiday weekend, despite the threat of hermine. the sun was shining yesterday, but the water remains strictly off limit. patrolling officers made sure people stayed far from the dangerous surf conditions and strong rip currents. even though people couldn't go for a swim, they say they're glad they made the trip. >> we were a little concerned coming down with the storm, but we thought we would give it a try, considering it was the last weekends, it has been
4:34 am
absolutely beautiful. >> little by little, the board walk came along. and next thing you know it felt like a regular day at the beach, and we forgot everything about the wetter. >> some say because of the storm they got good deals on hotel rooms this past weekends. >> headed further off the the coast in atlantic city, canceled today's labor day race due to the storm still spinning off coast. access to the ocean remains closed because of the dangerous rip currents. but on the board, it is somewhat business as usual. many folks spent the last full weekend of the summer at the amusements. >> people told us we shouldn't come. but we said we wanted to come. >> we are going home early to avoid the possible flooding. >> so high tide is around 11:30 this morning, officials are continuing to watch for possible flooding. and how about a look at this picture shared with us by the harvey cedars police department in ocean county. those rough waves churned up by the storm have already caused some minor beach
4:35 am
errosion there. >> delaware governor jack markell has a limited state of emergency for sussex county. he wrote on twitter's thankful hermine's impact on the first state has been minimal. the ocean was off limit for swimmers in rehoboth beach it, didn't stop some people. beach patrol tells "eyewitness news" they rescued young man after he got caught in the rough surf. >> it is not worth getting too close to the surf right now. it is just too powerful, too dangerous, it will do what it want to do. it doesn't care about you being a human being, it will suck you out and may take your life. >> officials say the water may look tempting but they warn it is too dangerous to swim right now. >> a special day event steps off little later this morning, along columbus boulevard, the 29th annual afl-cio tri-state labor day parade that start at 9:30 this morning. mayor jim kenney will address the parade participant, before they march. sheet metal workers, coastal workers, teachers and other union member, are expected to
4:36 am
participate. >> well, labor day is no holiday for hillary clinton. the democratic presidential nominee is campaigning today in ohio, and illinois, two key battleground state. both appearances will center on working families. republican nominee, donald trump, who was in philadelphia last friday, resumed his campaign today in virginia beach. but, that is a private event. >> new this morning, double shooting in north philadelphia leaves a woman dead and a man wounded. police are looking for a gunman and a motive. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live at temple university hospital where both victims were taken after the shooting. justin? >> brooke, good morning, that woman died short time ago here at temple and a man who was with her is listed in critical condition with a gunshot wounds to his head. let's take you now to video of the investigation going on overnight. early this morning, police fanned out on the 2200 block of north chadwick street,
4:37 am
searching for clues to bring them closer to catching a killer. about 12:39 a.m., 22nd district officers pulled up to find two victims lying in the middle of chadwick street, a man and woman, both in their mid 20's. police got to the temple hospital where that woman was pronounced dead about half hour later. she had been shot in her back. the man shot in his head remains in critical condition. police have not said what the relationship is adding they are working with slim leads this morning. >> we do not have any description on the offenders, nor any cameras in the area, and at this time we have no motive. >> and as you heard police do not have much to work with this morning, they did finds eight shell case willing, no word to what kind of weapon they belong, loan surviving victim that man about 25 years old with a gunshot to his head is in critical condition here at temple. live outside temple, justin finch, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", back to you. >> thank you for that live
4:38 am
report. new this morning, police are hoping to gather clues from neighborhood surveillance cameras and search for killer. thirty year old man stabbed to death near belmont and westminster avenues little after 1:00 this morning, police say the man found near atm. so they say robbery may have been the motive for this. >> bizarre killing in philadelphia's logan neighborhood, police say, someone intentionally hit a woman with a car, then got out and hit her with a shovel. it happened last night, in the 700 block of west lowden street. the woman believed to be in her 30's died about an hour later. police have made arrest, and are trying to learn more about what motivated. >> this investigators are searching for a police impersonator who robbed and pencil whipped a man in fairmount park. now, this happened, on sunday night along concourse drive in belmont avenue. the attacker took off with $100, driving a black ford explorer with flashing lights. now, he is described as black man in his mid 30's, wearing
4:39 am
all black with facial hair. the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. >> still ahead, in a festival of big names, a notable visitor attends made in america. >> we'll show you who, plus, see the visit colds play front man's chris martin made before their performance. plus this. >> we would not have been table get through the pain without this community, our friends, and family, and for that we say thank you. >> the parent of lane graves thank their community, they gather for what would have been lane's third birthday. we'll hear from his mom next. also ahead, hermine reaking havoc on the high sees. see more of this passenger video what it looks like from a cruise ship right now. we will be back. katie: on crime, pat toomey's attacks on me are shameful. he's making it up. of course, anyone who commits a violent crime needs to be prosecuted -- and put behind bars. narrator: katie mcginty will keep us safe -- more police on the streets, better training and equipment,
4:40 am
and take on the gun lobby for gun safety laws. katie: i'm the daughter of a police officer, and the mother of three. i'll stand with law enforcement to fight crime, and protect our families. i'm katie mcginty, and i approve this message.
4:41 am
>> code play night two on the made in america parkway. over night crews worked to tear down the start in front
4:42 am
of the art museum. this is the fifth year for the festival. >> and even cooler than the festival, before taking the stage lead singer chris martin made special visit to children's hospital. one of the patients he met is luke theo doseia: he has leukemia, and the blown marrow transplanted by his cousin. >> another visitor at this festival was president bill clinton. he was actually on hand to register people to vote. hillary had pictures of the president on twitter. clinton even hung out with beyonce back stage. >> just popping up everywhere, very good. well, hermine is making waves on long island and a few surfers, of course, trying to catch them. in long beach, despite warnings about rip currents, some people still headed into the surf, of course along with their boards. new york city says its beaches will be off limits to bathing,
4:43 am
swimming, again because of the rip currents. surf sentence filing in cape cod. communities there are now under tropical storm warning. yesterday was nice but boat owners were leary of the choppy waters, so owners took their boats to safer grounds ahead of any potential impact from the storm. >> different view of hermine from a cruise ship. passenger on royal caribbean anthem of the seas, grab the drama mean, the ship on its way to bermuda after living cape liberty new jersey saturday. you may recall the anthem battered back in february when it sailed through a storm off the coast of north carolina, so i guess the logic here is let's go ahead and do it one more time. how about it? time right now is 4:44. >> katie, help us out. >> guys, i guess the anthem of the sea's would be rock the boat? >> that's right. >> oh, i can't take you both.
4:44 am
>> it is a pun-off. i just dropped it, the gauntlet my friend. >> the gauntlet dropped. >> all right, let's go ahead, switch gears, take a look what the storm is doing then. it is out to sea thankfully. i would say another passing shower at worse. really see clouds building at the shore yet again here today. here's the thing though guys, even if you see the sunshine, and we did have it, quite full effect through the course of the weekend at the shore, i want you to just keep in mind that looks can be awfully deceiving, surf is dangerous, rip countries being is there, and it is a very high risk today. because the storm is still out there, churning, and even though it is technically a post try cop cyclone at this point, renmant of what was hermine, still out there. and you don't necessarily mean a full blown named system here to create some major headaches. so again, coastal flood warnings remaining in effect up and down the jersey shore, down into southeastern delaware for again specially high tide minor to moderate coastal flooding concern. further inland you go, does
4:45 am
end up being pretty nice day, breezy, sunshine, now looking at the forecast, models for the next couple of days, this is so bizarre, talking through the end of the week and into saturday, before this thing finally decides it will skirt out to sea. i would disregard this particular model, pretty much out outline err to said least, regardless, what we have got here on the spaghetti plot as we call it is the possible for this to meander for multiple days as we had originally projected it, still looking like that will be the case. with that system, doesn't matter, categorization, just signature, and spinning, and churning off the shore, have pretty dangerous rip countries. again, strong surf, as well. yes, we know the surfers love this, but really want to caution you, this is some rough stuff out there, literally and figure tiffly. take it easy just stay on shore. why not? patronize the small businesses and the board walks instead. although you will likely see some sunshine to enjoy. now, looking forward in the eyewitness seven day, heat up from here, granted we get some sunshine, but cold front
4:46 am
passage that moves in wednesday, into thursday, possibly shower thunderstorm out of. that will but i'm keeping it optimistic here, and even though it will be a toast i couple of days, at least we are banking women son sunshine for the majority of this week. over to you. >> katie, thank you so much for that. good morning, everyone, happy labor day. look at this accident, wissahickon was closed little bit ago. car closed on to the side. now looks like they moved it over, can use the off ramp, you may just get some people tapping brakes. good news, not a lot of vehicles out there. so probably not going to cause too much of a problem for you. the vine all open, not knott closed due to construction, because it is a holiday, not closed, looking really good. almost looking empty on the vine. ben franklin parkway at the art museum circle, this is live shot for you, i want to get more specific and show you opening with road closures, ben franklin parkway between the art museum circle and
4:47 am
20th street, that will be re-opening 5:00 a.m. also spring garden at pennsylvania avenue, also scheduled to open right around 5:00 a.m. i'll let you know if it does. accident in chad berg, vehicle hit a pole, baltimore pike at creek road, not causing too many slow downs. censor map even around that, see the green, letting you know you are still traveling 55 miles per hour, and construction, 295, both directions between 42 and 76, route 168. we do have travel everything is, again, another traffic shift. again we look at this, not seeing any red. not slowing you down at all, too early for that. good morning, brooke, over to you. >> thank up, meisha. here is a special tribute for the young boy who was grabbed and killed by an alligator at a disney resort. >> hundreds gathered to release thousands of blue balloons saturday to celebrate what would have been lane grave's third birthday. matt, melissa and ella graves celebrated as a family n june the family was on vacation, as
4:48 am
you will recall, lane was pulled into the water by an alligator. he was later found dead. >> anyone that knows me, knows i don't like to speak. but my baby, i owe it to him, to honor him, so his mommy needed to say happy birthday, laney, you're in our hearts today, and every second of every other day. >> the graves family said they hope lane could have seen the giant blue heart that everybody made for him. still ahead, it is a unique offer. >> the new fitness trends has nothing to do with exercise. a gym that guarantees results, or your money back. i'm jill wagner in new york, that story c

he's making it up. of course, anyone who commits a violent crime needs to be prosecuted -- and put behind bars. narrator: katie mcginty will keep us safe -- more police on the streets, better training and equipment, and take on the gun lobby for gun safety laws.

katie: i'm the daughter of a police officer, and the mother of three. i'll stand with law enforcement to fight crime, and protect our families. i'm katie mcginty, and i approve this message. >> it can be tough getting motivated to go to the gym. >> but jill wagner shows us some train remembers now offering a money back guarantee if you don't get in shape. >> at this manhattan gym, if
4:51 am
you don't get into shape, you get your money back. at first, rob fin thought it was too good to be true. >> i thought there had to be hundreds of loopholes for that roo funds would never be a possibility. >> but he gave it a shot. it has been four months, and he's lost 30 pounds. jeff is the owner of the gym, halbe life. he came up with the idea of fitness guarantee. >> take one of the major issues in our instrument, this entire notion of accountability, these unused gym members ship people are paying forget them absolutely no where. >> fitness guarantee based on five criteria, fat, muscle, body mass, cardio, not weight loss. >> if our members haven't improved in three out of the five areas in their first 09 days, we give they have all of their money back, all of the membership deuce, let out of the obligation of their membership contract. >> handful of gyms across the country are offering money back guarantees, to attract
4:52 am
customers. but david jack foremen's health magazine said make sure to read the fine print. >> you have to be careful a hundred% money back guarantee, know who you are going into business with, what their track history is, what the 100% money back guarantee entails. >> fin works in finance. >> numbers are actually good. >> with this investment, he's very happy not to get his money back. jill wagner, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". not going to lie, i still wouldn't go. >> thank you very much. coming up after the break, another check on weather and traffic. we'll be right back.
4:53 am
4:54 am
>> stay on shore, don't go in the water, clouds at this
4:55 am
point at the shore, nothing more than passing shower. overall sort of half and half beach day, end up with nice weather on the sand, but you have to stay off or out of the water. here's why. looking at the high tied here, you will see some coastal flooding eventually take grip here, still coastal flood warning until 5:00 a.m. actually tomorrow. here is a quick look at some of the tide times in rehoboth, 11:11 on the nose, cape may around 11:20 or so. shy of 11:00 a.m. in wildwood. then either just before or just after 11:00 the further up the shore line you go. so bottom line, about from 10:00 until say as late as noontime, that is when the next high tide cycle comes, in best chance initially to keep additional coastal flooding. again, still coastal flood warning coast until 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. everywhere else on this labor day, little breezy outside, nice day overall with some sunshine, meisha? >> good morning, katie, i was looking outside. ii know you are busy in the weather department. you wouldn't think labor day,
4:56 am
good morning, everyone, what we are looking at right now is there is an accident. boulevard northbound off ramp to wissahickon was closed. then reopened for little bit. then we saw all traffic being stopped, as we're trying to tow this out of the way. there was a car flipped on its side. i know causing issues even for the tow trucks. make note that that's kind of off and on, stopping all lanes of traffic. it might slow you down little bit if you have to head out to the boulevard any time soon. might want to give yourself an extra 15 minute or so, joe, over to you. >> meisha, thank you. hundreds every boys get free haircut just in time for back to school. >> all thanks to the annual bashers who care event. more than 300 kids were given fresh cut in west philly yesterday. that wasn't all, kids scored some free 76ers bag backs and books donated by the free library. two lucky kids even took home brand new tablet. >> very cool. >> we will be right

live from philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. it is still ruining vacation. new satellite images show hermine continuing to linger off shore. we'll show you the impact it is expected to have on the costes a tropical storm warning remains in effect. overnight double shooting claims a woman's life while a man is in critical condition. the place where the violence unfolded and the reason this crime may be too tough to solve. >> and, down it come. after a weekend of music, crews are breaking down the made in america stage as life gets back to normal on the parkway. wait until you see the surprise guest that showed up on the last day, it will blow your mind. >> well, today is labor day, september 5th, good morning, jim ' off.
5:00 am
i'm joe holden. >> i'm brooke thomas. katie and meisha are keeping an eye on things this morning. >> two accident out there, one on the boulevard, we know the bulk of the commute today will be nice. >> hopefully quiet. weather actually not too bad. even despite the system off shore. it is one of those looks can be deceiving kind of deals though, because the system really churning up the surf. so if we can, we go out to the maps, storm scan3, nice and quiet here locally, but that's not necessarily when you look out to sea what's posted now, post tropical cyclone hermine, basically the renmant that far system. while all is good, even up toward cape cod, you do still have the clouds sort of building in on the outward rim of this system possibly passing shower, but i would say generally speaking we stay dry here today. only thing is even when you see some of the clouds, parting for some sunshine, even at the shore, you have to keep in mind that that
