out started around 11:20. that is help a man with the gun approached the police cruiser and shot sergeant sylvia young. officials credit the bullet-proof vest she was wearing with saving her life. officers say gunman ran in the bar the not floor from this scene, and shot a guard in the leg. the as officers approached gunman used a woman as a human shield and shot her in the leg. the at forty-ninth and sansom a short distance away police say gunman fired several shots in the car killing a woman and wounding a man inside, and there was more gunfire in an alley near forty-eighth and sansom, that is where university of pennsylvania officer eddie miller was wounded and police say it is here when the gun man was kill. philadelphia police commissioner richard ross says investigators found an envelope. >> that letter that he has, it is a bunch of rambling which indicates his hatred for police officers and probation officers. he does mention a particular probation officer. we're obviously trying to

track that individual down to make sure they're okay first and foremost but just, in line, in keeping with the possible motivation may have been, that is ramblings suggest that he clearly was trying to target a police officer. >> they were all rushed to penn presbyterian medical center and that is where we will find "eyewitness news" report's neat a oh to bring us up to date. i understand you are learning more about the weapon used, what can you tell us. >> reporter: that is right, rahel we're learning that the gunman used a 9-millimeter glock semiautomatic handgun and one clip and reloaded again during this rampage that killed one woman, doctors pronounced that woman dead just before 2:00 this morning here at penn presbyterian. all we know is she's in her 20's and but police don't know why they fired in the car that this woman was riding in with another man, that man is in critical condition, here at

penn presbyterian. meantime the few police officers, shot, are in stable condition, and expected to recover. that one officer, eddie miller, hoist 56, is assigned to the university of pennsylvania, and we're told he has been with penn police for two years but served as a philadelphia police sergeant for more than 30 years before. that miller was first to spot suspect near an alley near forty-eighth and sansom street and fire at him. there is no id on that suspect at that time but police say he sign his letter found at the scene with a street name, and included in that letter are rambling about his hatred of police officers, and his probation officer. police say that the man shot philadelphia sergeant sylvia young at least eight times, one hit her in the left arm but luckily most lodged in her bullet have proof vest. mayor jim kenney told us those officers are lucky to be alive. >> we have to keep them in our

prayers. civilians are still in various degrees of being treated. i think all and all, it is a very terrible scary night. but hopefully civilians will also turnout okay. i just want to say to our police officers thank you for what you do for us every day. >> and commissioner richard ross, echoed those sentiments, and commended the officers. the department is still double up officers. again, six people were shot. the gun man has been killed, and one victim is dead. the two police officers shot are in stable condition and they are expected to recover at this time. live at penn presbyterian anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you for those updates. last night's shooting was just about a mile from where philadelphia police officer jesse hartnett was ambushed back in january. gunman shot officer while in his patrol car at 16th and sprees. officer hartnett survived.
