donald trump and hillary clinton clash at the first presidential debate in 2016. >> she tells you how to fight isis on her website. >> at least i have a plan to fight isis. >> no, no. you're telling the enemy everything you want to do. >> no, we're not. >> from national security to growing the economy. no topic was off limits. good evening everyone. i'm yukee washington. >> good evening everyone i i'm jessica dean coming to you live from hofstra university in hem stead, new york. it was 90 minutes of donald trump and hillary clinton going head to head uninterrupted. earlier today i talked with senior advisors. they both said this is the time
11:01 pm
where both candidates can talk directly to the american people. let's take a look at what happened tonight. >> i have a feeling by the end of this evening i'll be blamed for everything that's happened. >> why not. >> reporter: first topic how to achieve prosperity. chump said he would rev up the economy. something clinton had a nickname for. >> trumped up trickle down. trickle down did not work. it got us into the mess we were in in 2008 and nine. >> your husband signed nafta which was one of the worst things that ever happened. >> that is your opinion. >> reporter: moderator lefter holt why not release your tax returns. >> i will release my tax returns, against my lawyers wishes, when she releases her 33,000 e-mails have been deleted. as soon as she releases them, i will release my tax returns.
11:02 pm
>> reporter: clinton said voters should ask themselves were trump won't release them. >> this is something the american people deserve to see and i have no reason to believe that he's ever going to release his tax returns, because there's something he's hiding. and we'll guess. we'll keep guessing at what it might be. >> trump hammered home his theme of law and order and stop and frisk is a good tool. >> the argument is it's a form of racial profiling. >> no, the argument is we have to take these guns away from people that have them. i just left detroit and i just left philadelphia and they are very, very upset with what their politicians have told them. >> reporter: clinton said implicit bias is a problem for everyone in the united states in the justice system. >> if you're a young african-american man and do you same thing as a young white man you are more likely to be arrested, charged, convicted and
11:03 pm
incarcerated. >> reporter: trump defended his years of birtherism. >> i think i did a great job and service not only for the kuventtory but even nor the president in getting him to produce his birth certificate. >> secretary clinton? >> there was absolutely no evidence for it. but he persisted year after year because some of his supporters, people that he was trying to bring into his fold apparently believed it or wanted to believe it. >> the candidates had a few agreements, people on a watch list offer no-fly list should not be able to buy guns was one. a rare agreement in a contentious night. as many as 100 million people were expected to watch tonight's debate. a lot of eyeballs on this, a lot of stake. at a lot of people gathering together to watch it together. there was a watch party sponsored by our sister radio station at chicki's
11:04 pm
>> reporter: a lot of energy even though we weren't in new york. but i have to tell you the energy in center city, people have been waiting to see this moment with hillary clinton and donald trump on the same stage they got their wish and folks told me they were not disappointed. with just over a month to go until election day, voters packed the american pub in center city, just feet from philadelphia city hall. >> this could be the greatest number of viewers for a presidential debate in history. i think the nation is concerned about our future. >> reporter: the nonpartisan event sponsored by the committee of 70 draw all ages to watch the debate. one expected to bring in 100 million people. sure we found those who made up their minds before the debate, but it was the undecide the voters who paid close attention to every answer from both candidates. >> i really can't stand either one of them.
11:05 pm
i just have a visceral dislike of hillary clinton and i think that donald trump is clinically insane. so i just can't seem to make up my mind. >> a new poll released earlier in the day has clinton up by 1 point in pennsylvania. donald trump is closing the gap here putting pennsylvania in play more than usual. >> we're a swing state so we need everyone to go out to the polls. i can't tell you who to vote for, but the importance of this first debate is going to set the tone and engagement for future debates. >> reporter: a lot of people were talking about pennsylvania being a swing state. and a lot of people were completely silent during, really paying attention to what the candidates had to say. both campaigns say their candidates will be in philadelphia several more times before the election on november 8th. it's coming up soon. reporting live tonight in center city, david spunt, cbs3 eyewitness news.
11:06 pm
>> both campaigns tonight are saying their candidate did the best. we want to get some analysis from some locals. we turn now to our rapid response portion of the evening. allison young a republican analyst is joining us and jonathan sidell a democratic analyst is joining us. allison, let's start with you. >> tonight i think the big difference we saw in this debate was donald trump actually appearing presidential in some moments. and people haven't been expecting that. i talked to a lot of republicans in preparation for the debate and they were a little anxious how he might come off. i think people who were already clinton supporters while did fine tonight she came off on polished candidate. donald trump handled himself pretty well than what people
11:07 pm
expected. >> let's go to jonathan, same question. >> i just want to make mention that i was born at temple hospital, the old temple hospital. just in case anyone is questioning my citizenship. you know, i think that secretary clinton was professional, she was organized, she presented a vision for america that i think was very presidential. the bar is so low for trump that if he shows up and doesn't attack someone in a visceral way that people may say that he actually did a good job. i think he was disjointed. i am amazed that a cpa and a lawyer and somebody that was the controller of this great city, that doesn't know value-added tax and normal taxation and most of his statements were not consistent with what i would hope a president would be about or certainly a presidential candidate would be about. >> reporter: all right jonathan i also want to ask you, secretary clinton has issues
11:08 pm
with her trus worthiness. do you think she did anything to overcome that tonight? >> i think she showed she has the wherewithal to be present of the under. she has the understanding of the issues, she understands foreign policy, she understands domestic policy. she doesn't come here out of the blue. she comes with the credibility of being the first lady, a united states senator from a populated state, new york state and being secretary of state one of the most powerful positions in the united states and in the world. i think she has proven herself that when you look in comparison to donald trump, who, my god, is the republican nominee, think that if the choice is between the two, you have to vote for hillary clinton. >> reporter: all right. and quickly to allison, trump a lot of people question his temp ra meant was he able to overcome that? >> he actually presented some facts and figures. the thing that's interesting
11:09 pm
about his tepera meant is hillary clinton is the epitome of the status quo. she's repeating the same lines that politicians say year after year. that was a point trump hit home and i think scored a lot of points with viewers tonight. i'll be anxious to see some of the polls particularly here in pennsylvania coming out of this. because i think he actually painted her as the status quo, boring politician and he is the candidate of change. >> reporter: all right guys. thank you so much for joining us. we have two more presidential debates coming up in the next few weeks, but first a vice presidential debate will be coming up next tuesday at longwood university in virginia. yukee for now that is it from hofstra university. the big event is over and this election rolls toward election day. back to you. >> we are not done. tonight's debate tk center stage

well tonight governor tom wolf has called for flags to be flown at half staff. the winner of 62 pga tournaments was burn and raised in la trobe, pennsylvania. many remember him not only for his great skill, but also for the role he played in shaping the game for all. >> he brought to light the game of golf, the camaraderie with golf and the sharing of children and men and women alike in the game of golf. >> a private funeral will be held later this week. a public service will be held on october in saint vincent college. the king, thank you. i saw a picture your dad and father posing with him.

>> you can see that on my twitter, my dad and grandpa in . the legend arnold palmer. how does the weather look? temps in the 70s and some rain. >> a little bit of rain every day. we have some rain heading our way right now. showers have started to erupt across the area. we've got the chance for at least a little bit every day right into the start of the weekend. take a look at today and you can see how things really panned out. we started the day with a lot of sunshine this shows this morning in philadelphia started the day sunshine, blue sky, everything looking fantastic a nice start to the morning and then the clouds start to roll in and once those clouds rolled in, there was no stopping them. it turned out gray and gloomy this afternoon. it was a dry day for us but you can see now it has changed as showers have begun to creep in. we are seeing scattered showers over portions of south jersey.

and seeing some steadier showers back off to the north and west and headed quickly for mount pocono. this is all part of a larger system that's going to be impacting us for days and days even once the front sweeps out, you can see the front right here. the actual low is back over the great lakes and that is going to impact us into the weekend. the heavier showers that you see off to the west right now, those will be tracking through the city probably around 3:00, 4:00 a.m. don't be shocked if you wake up hearing thunder or lightning. 6:00 a.m. we're dealing with showers but by 8:00 or 9:00 those showers move offshore and by lunchtime we'll see clouds giving way to a sunny and bright afternoon. the clouds may stick around down the shore for much of the day but it should turn out nice in the afternoon. the upper low meanders through the area right knew the week and into the weekend. it's cut off because it has no where to go and it's going no where fast keeping the rain as a
