scottish use warnings for floridians battening down the hatches and thousands now head today higher ground. the outer rain bands are now approaching florida, good afternoon everyone, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm brooke thomas, marlie hall is live in daytona beach as the hurricane strengthens, marl '? report jim, brooke, relatively calm here at daytona beach because the extreme weather hasn't started yesterday. and officials say you don't want to be here when it does. >> a sign on boarded up building says closed for business as hurricane matthew approaches florida. forecasters say matthew has strengthened once again, to monday store category four storm. >> this is serious. >> the governor is concerned, about the storm's powerful winds, and storm surge. more than one and a half million people in the storm's path have been told to evacuate. >> there are no excuses, you need to leave. >> evacuate, evacuate,

evacuate. >> storm preparations continue to cross florida. shelves are empty. >> officials issued hurricane warnings and watches from florida to south carolina. here in daytona beach, streets are empty, most people have evacuated. but, across the state, 1500 national national guards troops have been called up, just in case. >> matthew hit the bahamas this morning, packing winds up to 125 miles per hour. roads are littered with debris. matthew devastated parts of haiti. poorly constructed homes are completely gone. people waited through knee-deep high water trying to reach higher ground. matthew blamed for 2500 deaths and that number could rise. >> last time florida experienced major storm was hurricane wilma, back in 2005. jim, brooke? >> twenty-five deaths. >> marlie, what are you hearing about air travel in

and out of south florida? >> well, there are widespread flight concellations, today, along the florida coast, in fact, florida international airport, or for for the louder international airport closed about hour and a half ago, brooke? >> thanks, marlie. >> the bahamas capitol feeling effect of hurricane matthew wrath. threatened power lines, along deserted streets, as torrential rain fell with force. though right now there are no immediate reports of significant flooding at this time. >> it was the storm hitting bahamas, bearing down on florida, let's go to meteorologist, katie fehlinger, where she tracking hurricane matthew's path, what's the latest? >> this is now monster category four storm system, so as of this morning, it was within 5 miles per hour shy of becoming a category four yet again anyway. we were treating it basically as such. now it may have been made

official that this storm is in fact again a cat four. and it is an impressive storm to look at whether we take you out to the tropical sat lie. we go there now, where again, this storm just all encompassing, huge, essentially over almost the entire bahama islands region again headed northwest, although pick up bit of speed since last check, moving now currently at 14 miles per hour to the north and west. but when we put things into motion with this track, okay, so it looks as though it will be making landfall, near the cape canaveral area thereabouts later today into tonight. as potentially category four system, then rolling up the coast, continuing that strength, right over the georgia coastline, and then into south carolina. whether it is actually going to be on land at this point, or just off shore, which is actually what we think will be happening, it is still going to maintain the strength before it starts to gradually lose that strength once it makes that right-hand turn then back out to sea. but notice the sort of circular habit it is taking because of the way the at moss

flow will take shape. looking at some of the rain and the we expect out of this, they are impressive. you could be looking even up to foot worth of rain frankly, even the model indications picking up over 7 inches of rain for west palm beach, jacksonville, extending all the way to the southern most tip of south carolina, so you are talking millions of people impacted by this, and definitely wise a lot of these people taking heed, of the officials warnings to just get out and evacuate until it is safe to go back again. possible storm surge could peak as high as six or more feet. you're talking wall of water 6 feet high or greater in a giant expands of beach here, just coming on shore. with those kind of winds speeds, it is incredibly dangerous. now, as we are concerned, thankfully, i don't think we'll see much more than very minor impact that are very indirect from this storm system. so, matthew is expected to stay well to the south.

we here at home may ends up seeing tropical moisture get drawn north from frontal passage, talk more about that system but overall our forecast is far tame err by comparison. but much more later in the show. brooke, back over to you. >> thanks, katie. police in south carolina say motorist is dead this afternoon after a gun fight with officers. this is all in the midst of evacuation efforts related to hurricane matthew. investigators say the man was apparently agitated over evacuation route, and began driving irradically toward police. police say they pursued the man to a parking lot where he got out of his car and shot at the officers. the officers say they then shot the man. he was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. >> as marlie hall mentioned just few minutes ago, hurricane matthew makes its way to florida, it is affecting airline schedules, it is impacting philadelphia international airport as well. flights to south florida have been canceled since early this morning, though, some to our lan dough remain on the board for now. airports in florida are

national hurricane center warning residents not to take these evacuation orders lightly. >> absolutely. and they make those evacuation orders for a reason. you know, not just going to willie philly, so it is understandable. you see the magnitude of this storm system, as we've talked about, it was cat three through the morning, back up to cat four. it is huge. it will cover very wide swat of real estate here, millions of people will be impacted by it. so it is a serious situation. and we're really lucky to say that we're not going to bear much impact from it at all, even though we are potentially going to see more moisture, get nudged north as cold front passes through, matthew virtually has no problems here. it is going to basically bypass us. let's look, at the crap call satellite one more time, it is an expansive storm system, making its northwest movement right now, already, some of the outer bands of rain, moving into the sunshine state of florida, they'll not see that sunshine for couple of days, as soon as the storm

gets here very slow system, be powerful system, the hurricane warnings are posted throughout the bahamas, and then all the way up the georgia coastline, hurricane watches, posted for south carolina, but those will eventually turn in closer out to the actual impact. let's take a look at future weather as it pertains to matthew specifically. the bands that rain already again moving on shore, but some of the heaviest rain starts to pick up later this afternoon, and then, it just keeps coming. heavy rain bands, incredibly strong wind speeds, up and down, basically, the east and central portions of florida here. tan will continue, right through friday, even into the weekend, so because it is a slow and such powerful storm system, days on ends, with this kind of heavy rain, and that kind of winds. you will definitely see destruction specially at the area beaches. meanwhile this will continue to sort of hug the coastline bring in heavy rains eastern

georgia as well before it makes the right turn out to sea. now there is will take sort of strange path, into the circular motion, and we've seen other hurricane paths ivan made a loop and circled back across florida again, wrong way lenny they called it back in 1999. it actually developed over the caribbean, then went east, you really don't see that all that often because of trade wind. esther back in 1961. kyle, very long lived storm system back to 2002. basically went across the atlantic, two separate times before it struck land. ginger, looks like a toddler took a purple crayon back in 1971. very strange and long lives path that point took, also affecting bermuda, a then we have matthew.

which, overall, didn't take too strange after path until it decided it will be making its circular path that it will eventually take in the days ahead. so, that's what we face. and it is really just because of the way the atmosphere flow, the jet stream specifically, suppressing the storm and keeping it sitting so can't go back out to sea. so, here's your storm system. meanwhile, our next system will be a cold front, that starts to move our way, come this weekend, saturday specifically, it will draw in some of the tropical moisture, as we look ahead to the weekends it, also helps your nerve cooler air check in with live neighborhood network, gorgeous, mid 60s currently to report for you there, generally what we are finding region wide. flirting with 07 in a lot of locations probably tack another degree or two onto that here, shooting for 76 in fact in the city of philadelphia later on today. tomorrow, looks beautiful. saturday is the day that bridges in the impact with the showers, maybe some steadier rain bands, then it cools down, back in the sunshine
