shows us what's happening across hundreds of miles in florida. >> reporter: overnight the outer band of hurricane matthew began pomeling the florida coast with unrelenting rain. and roaring winds. the storm surge from the category three storm sent boats in this harbor rocking side to side. >> real quite a site. >> reporter: storm shutters ripped off the businesses in west palm beach. in daytona beach police were patrolling empty streets as most rest end listened to evacuation warnings. >> we can rebuild homes. we can rebuild businesses. i think of my own family. we can't rebuild a life. this storm is a monster. >> some people living on the coast who couldn't get out of town south safety in red cross shelters. >> this one inside a school cafeteria. >> there were either mobile homes or vulnerable places, heeding the call from the authorities. >> conditions here in orlando will intensify over the next fewer hours, matthew is expected to slam florida all day, with hurricane force winds, and then, turn toward

georgia. the state joined florida in ordering mandatory evacuations, reversing lane of traffic on this highway yesterday to accommodate the exodus. south carolina did the same, as this beach bar stayed open for one last party. >> we're closed after tonight. we should be good after that. >> matthew is expected to move out to sea this weekend. marlie hall, cbs news, orlando, florida. volunteers from our area are actually headed south. >> they're getting ready to help with relief effort after hurricane matthew passes through, now, "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch live in the cbs-3 sat center, shows us how they've been getting ready. good morning. >> that's right. local first responders are already on their way, caring supplies, and lot of experience, many have served in other big storms in our country including hurricane katrina and super storm sandy. now, the red cross of eastern pennsylvania chapter began their preps yesterday. volunteers will join red cross officials on a hurricane matthew response trip to include stops in south

carolina and florida, also, pennsylvania's task force one. "eyewitness news" camera was on hand after convoys began loading up, members briefed. pa task force 11 of fema trained teams called in toughie ponds, their specialties range widely from search and rescue, to emergency medical response. new jersey is also sending its 80 member task force one as well. matthew is now category three storm, expected to carry wind of more than 100 miles per hour and of course those pounding rains. the philadelphia fire department is hosting task force one, and commissioner adam teal says that force is among the best of the best. >> they have different capability, everything from k9 search and rescue, urban search and rescue, real core capability for this team but also water rescue assets, medical folks, so they are really ready for anything that might come. and of course, like we always do, we're preparing for the worse, but hoping for the bells. now, pennsylvania task

"eyewitness news" was at philadelphia international airport last night as the last flight from orlando to philadelphia arrived. now, as you can imagine, the people at american airlines flight 1666 were very thankful to have dodged the storm. >> we had a lot of rain over the last couple of days, and the wind was starting to pick up. >> and the staff told us hurry up and board. so we can get out of here to make sure that the flight was able to leave. >> amtrak southeast train service has also been suspended from florida to north carolina. >> now, we are now seeing the devestation hurricane matthew left behind in cuba. the storm hit the island on monday, with winds of up to 140 miles per hour, hundreds

give you sense of the overall pattern here, your eye just gets drawn to matthew, very well defined storm system. but you should see how the moisture is actually getting drawn north already. the storm itself will not make it further north of north carolina but see it get drawn, and helps to draw that north future rain ability, talking very substantial rainfall out of this, some spots possibly upward after foot, and might even see more than that, out near the shore line. but places like savannah could end up with over 9-inch of rainout of the storm system. and that's from just tomorrow evening. so, very, very impression i have rainfall totals, not to mention the winds field, that's helping to send the storm surge, in other words, abnormal rise in the water level on shore. it is a wall of higher water, coming at you, and with the kind of force that this casino every wind speed can bring,
