this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". heavy surf from hurricane matthew is crashing on florida's daytona beach this noon. thousands have fled, ahead of the dangerous storm, and there are reports of one person dead, in florida from the hurricane. further inland, seeing the destructive power of matthew's high winds. trees had been flattens, and the last hold-outs are securing docks, and peers, as the state battered by storm force winds. good morning, i'm brooke thomas.

>> i'm jim donovan. more to come, storm surge is tearing up beaches along the florida coast. marlie hall live in orlando. >> hurricane matthew pomeling the floored coast with powerful winds and rain but so far the state has been spared a direct hit and florida governor rick scott is calling it a blessing. hurricane matthew with 120-mile per hour winds is lashing floored's atlantic coast, the storm is bringing heavy rain, and flooding tides to the northern half of the state. >> this is still a really dangerous hurricane. poe pen shale for storm surge, loss of life, severe property damage, continues to exist. >> more than half a million people are without power after wind gusts approached 100 miles per hour overnight. >> it is really important that we get power restored as quickly as we can. >> matthew's eye just off shore, moving parallel to the coast meaning the powerful winds of the eye wall could

impact hundreds of miles of shore line, while the storm's flooding rains spread well inland. >> the weather is just starting to go downhill in northern florida and on the georgia coastline. >> matthew is already a diller -- killer, in haiti hit hard by the storm earlier this week the death toll approaching 500, here in florida damage assessments under nay towns south of the storm. but, forecasters say, this may not be the last the state will see of matthew. it will transition to category two, we think somewhere around georgia, maybe transition into one pushing through the south carolina coast, then this big loop pushing back down toward the bahamas. is it possible the same place cost get hit twice? it is possible but much weaker system. >> for now, florida's governor is warning all residents who have not evacuated to stay inside. >> airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights between yesterday and today, the fort lauderdale and orlando air force have shutdown.

in orlando, marlie hall, back to you. >> thanks, marlie the the last major storm to hill florida was will man ten years ago when wilma hit the state directly. from what you've seen how does this compare? >> hard to say because full damage assessment has not been done as of yet because the storm has not moved away yet, as every right now major officials, are downed power lines, flooding, and widespread power outages. >> bark to you. >> in the past hour, received the latest track on the storm for the national hurricane center. we go now to katie in the cbs-3 weather center where she has been tracking this amazingly huge storm. >> so expansive in its coverage jim. even though you don't actually have landfall in the united states just yet, we just heard from marl i am, the impacts are clearly there, so i wouldn't call this a busted forecast if you maybe are seeing that on social media,

heard the phrase thrown around, it is not, just because it hasn't made landfall. look at the tropical satellite, incredibly impressive rainfall bands moving in right now, around that outer rim, into the carolinas, as we speak. and there are hurricane warnings posted up to at this point now even the southern tear tear, southern beaches of north carolina so we continue really to see those extends further and further north with time here. we saw the storm system making essentially loop. with the most up-to-date information from the national hurricane center, there is still essentially the same movement here, to the north-northwest 12 miles per hour, with that eye wall, just brushing the north florida coastline. than loop is still anticipated out of the storm expected to weaken there is possibility that places like the bahamas ends up getting double dose from the storm. look just reminder at the simpson scale basically all measured about winds speed. so with very potent category three hurricane, right now, at

120 miles per hour sustained winds speeds, again, it is still a very strong storm, and what we call major, very quickly looking at the wide zoom on storm scan, i show you this for a reason, off to the west, there is a line of clouds and rain. that's the next front. that will be drawing in moisture to our area, then we tell you about the impacts that we see from matthew indirectly this weekend as a result. for now, guys, we send it back over to you. >> thanks, katie. hurricane matthew is leaving a path of damage and destruction in its wake. various parts of florida will need relief efforts, and that's what a philadelphia task force will be providing. search and rescue, urban search and rescue, technical rescue, real poor capability for this team, but also some water rescue assets, hazardous materials assets, medical folks. so they are really ready for anything that might come. of course like we always do, we're preparing for the worse, but hoping for the best. >> pa task force is among several fema train teams deploying, new jersey also sending its 80 member task force one as well. the red cross, eastern pennsylvania chapter began prepping supplies and operations yesterday. their response takes them to south carolina and florida, matthew forecast to bear down winds with more than 100 miles per hour and pounding rain. >> every hurricane has its own dna, its own characteristics. matthew will write its own store. >> i storm watchers say matthew has weakens somewhat, does not mean the impact will, and local responders are ready for that too. some pitched for other big event including hurricane katrina and super storm sandy. justin finch, cbs 3, "eyewitness news". now, hurricane matthew is causing serious travel trouble

for families heading to and from the impact zone. "eyewitness news" is at philadelphia international airport last night when the last flight from orlando to philadelphia arrived. the american airlines passengers were thankful they were able to dodge the storm. >> we had a lot of rain over the last couple of days, the winds was starting to pick up. >> and the staff told us hurry up and board so we can get out of here to make sure that the flight was able to leave. >> now the hurricane cancel nearly 4,000 flights, so far, and amtrak's southeast train service has also been suspended from florida to north carolina. >> seeing the devestation hurricane matthew left behind in cuba, the storm hit the islands monday with winds up to 140 miles per hour. hundreds of homes had their roofs blown off while about 30 homes were washed away in northeastern cuba, no deaths report in the cuba unfortunately that's not the case in haiti. where more than 260 people

headquarters in new york city this morning. he held rounds table discussion with members of the national border patrol council, a organization that has previously endorsed trump. during the meeting, they talked about criminal undocumented immigrants who are apprehended at the border. the presidential candidates will be at washington university in st. louis for their second debate, you can see it sunday, at 9:00 right here on cbs-3. the new jersey transit commuter train that slammed into a station in hoboken hasn't been removed. now undergoing testing at another site. it has been removed. crews worked to pull the train out from the wreckage late yesterday. it was then towed away for the additional testing. we now know that train was going twice the speed limit. which is 10 miles per hour at the moment of impact. federal investigators say the train's sped up about 38 seconds before the crash. they also say the engineer hit the emergency brake less than a second before impact. the engineer told investigators he does not remember the crash.

one person was killed and more than 100 others were hurt. >> philadelphia's city councilman allen dom is making good on promise and the city's school children are the beneficiaries. dom presented checks to six philadelphia public schools today. he wants to donate his city counsel salary to public schools across the city. the schools receiving checks today come from several neighborhoods including kingsessing, fairmount, and north and west philly. >> well, still ahead on "eyewitness news": >> hanging on. a reporter struggles in matthew's high winds as this hurricane begins edging its way out of florida. and starts moving up the southeastern coast of the united states. katie? >> we feel so much for those folks that are out in the field covering these storms. that's for sure. meanwhile we are going to eventually end up with some of the renmant issues with this storm system. some indirect impacts here from matthew. and we will talk more about that coming up.

>> long difficult night. >> take a look at the conditions in daytona beach where earlier today a reporter from our affiliate, wkmg was covering the storm. >> ya. i don't know what to tell you guys. you can see what's happening right now. i'm holding myself up against the wall, at the water and wind comes in from the ocean. we have lost, i can't see because of the bright lights, we've lost almost all of the signs here. two of them are fallen, the other two have fallen. surprisingly, they're still light. surprisingly i haven't seen any lights go out anywhere. hard to imagine with winds like this that we haven't lost power anywhere. very strong, a lot -- i don't even know if it is rain at this point or just coming from

the ocean water. but definitely not something that you would want to be riding in or being in. as soon as i go on to the other side of the wall i know sometimes people are concerned about us, and our safety, as well. as soon as i go to the other side of this wall, then i'm safe from the wind. while i'm doing this just to show you what it is like, i'm not sure what the miles per hour are, but enough that i'm standing in this way, that it would kick me over. i'm going to send it back to you guys. >> that was earlier this morning in daytona beach. one of the things i always concern about in hurricanes, flying signs, pieces every metal. you have to watch out. >> yes, and when you're out in the field, one of the fuse way that we have to really see how things are going. so we always try to keep your field reporters safe out there. you set yourself up in a way close to some safety and

shelters you can be, but at this point that storm still bar other across the southeast coastline. meanwhile here at home, the weather is very tame, by comparison, and that's where we turn our focus for now. we are going to touch on matthew one more time. because there are some indirect impacts come our way because of it, storm scan completely quiet. couple clouds to the south and west here. virtually no clouds overhead, for most of you, and beautiful afternoon, that's unfolding, as we zoom in and out once or twice, see the beginning of cold front. this essentially help steer matthew back out to sea then eventually have it make the loop we've been talking b but take a look at the moisture lifting north already, from that, into the virginias, some of that moisture will get passed into as this cold front actually crosses through. so, that means, we ends up not just with couple of showers but very likely steady rain. we track that for now second. meanwhile here what is now tropical storm nicole, briefly a hurricane, for a couple of different updates that came out from the national

hurricane center. there is matthew. that's where your eye gets immediately drawn, still churning away, bringing just major impact to the southeast shore line, and it will continue to do so into the weekend. now, back here at home, as that moisture gets tapped, the rest of today looks absolutely gorgeous, but by tonight already the clouds rebuild, and then tomorrow specially through the p.m. hours, rain starts to move in. this is a cold front that lives up to its name. it does turn cooler in its wake. also going to be breezy second half of the weekends, the sun should shine, model indication some of you may be little slow to clear, but we will get again a check on that in the minutes ahead. come monday columbus day some of you are off, some of you aren't. regardless nice start to the week, little on the cool side. walk you through future weather. later tonight those clouds are rebuilding because of the blanket it provides, we actually see some heat get trapped. it won't be as cool through the overnight. as early as late morning tomorrow, though, the beginning raindrops start to fall through the far western suburbs, and maybe even off to the south into delaware as that moisture gets drawn north. but it is generally into the

afternoon and toward evening, that the bulk of any showers or steady rain and notice it will be somewhat steady for some of you, starts to move on through. in to sunday morning, again, there is one of the models that tries to keep at least little wet weather mere the shore points at least. into the early afternoon we start to see skies clear. now, a lot of you at this time of year like to go leaf peeping, we call it, at this point not a lot of change with the fall foliage, but beginning to see some color change. give us couple of more weeks, we're not quite at where we would be for the peak of that, typically happens toward the end of october, but it is starting to take shape. i'll step out of the way very quickly, still out, there i was hoping they would stick around, kids out there for recess, looks like they're doing some sidewalk chalk right now too. what a great afternoon for it, perfect excuse to get outside. meantime rest of the afternoon expect few additional degrees added on to the daytime high, under the sunshine, just nice, enjoy this while you have got it. meanwhile later tonight again not quite as chilly as it has been in recent nights, and the next few days, really only one little part of the forecast,
