new developments overnight in the the palm springs standoff after two officers are killed in the line of duty and a third is in the hospital. voters wait for tonight's second debate between donald trump and hillary clinton after trump's remarks about would hen years ago prompted new jersey congressman to distance himself. and, here comes that rainy day feeling all over again, but the start of the workweek or change of its own. today is sunday october 9th, good morning i'm rahel solomon. let's send it over to justin drabick with eyewitness weather. justin, yesterday was so rainy, so dreary, i woke up expecting a change this morning. >> it is going to happen, next few hours, still under the gun for some wet weather. we have north and west of here

we're dry, that rain is from the city on south and east and that is part from matthew and cold front moving through but by afternoon we will get sunshine but noticeably cooler. complaining about the cold today? i think you're early on that. >> i was getting a hard time this morning with my jacket on. >> now tommy can understand. we will wake up in the 40's and 30's in the suburbs. so typical october cool down. first we have to get rid of the rain, steady rain in parts of the delaware and south jersey right now. driving will be slow over the next few hours, here in center city we have steady rain. 59 degrees. so that north wind is overtaking region. 16 miles an hour. it will pump in cooler air. just look at that rain shield. kind of lining up over i-95 flooding to the north and west. you can see heavier steady rain from dover, delaware southward and jersey shore so just watch out there for next few hours. flash flood watches are in effect until noon time for kent, sussex county, delaware. parties due to the recent

rainfall over past week or so. fifty-nine in the airport. forty-eight in mount pocono. low 50's along the shore. we will be sitting in the upper 50's this morning, slowly, climbing in the lower 50's. north wind around 15 miles an hour right now, gusting up to 35 today, so watch out for morning rain, we will get clearing skies if this afternoon so sunshine will return, it will be windy, temperatures struggle tell get up to 64 in philadelphia and shore. fifty's in the poconos. tonight, 40's and 30's and it stays chilly through part of the upcoming workweek. if you like october weather you will like the seven day. rahel, back to you. well, developing this morning two police officers are shot and killed and another hurt in california. police say they have shoot inner custody, cherri gregg from kyw news radio is live from the sat center with the very latest, good morning, cherri. >> reporter: good morning. true tragedy. riverside police department announced on twitter this morning that the suspect has been taken into custody.

suspect is alleged to have shot and killed two officers, six three-year old jose gilbert vega and leslie, as you can imagine, the entire palm springs community is in mourning. police and community members, gathered, saturday night outside of the palm springs desert regional medical center, where officers leslie and jose gilbert vega, died of their wound. the officer's coffin were wheeled out of the hospital and gently lifted in to white hearst, a third officer remains in the hospital being treated for gunshot wound. police chief brian reyes says that the three officers were shot while answering a call from a woman who said that her adult son was causing a disturbance. the chief says officers were at the front door of the home, negotiating with the suspect when he decided to open fire. two of the officers were killed. six three-year old jose gill

vega a father of eight was a 35 year veteran of the police department and scheduled to retire in december. twenty-seven year-old leslie had been on the force for 18 months and recently returned from maternity leave. she leaves behind a husband, and their four month-old daughter. >> i was awake, and palm springs lost two brave officers. they go out every day and put the boots on the ground for everybody in the community. they gave it all for you. >> reporter: police have not yet released the name of the suspect but said to have had previous run ins with the law, and palm springs police department is expected to hold a press conference, later this morning. rahel. cherri, thank you very much. new this morning police are investigating a shooting in north philadelphia, police tell us that the man was shot in the shoulder in the 2600 block of north franklin street. man is in stable condition, and no details though on a

shooter at this time. big day in politics second presidential debate is set for tonight in st. louis and steaks could not be higher. republican party, of course has been in turmoil after recording exposed donald trump making vulgar comments about woman. jamie you kiss is at washington university where the candidates face off tonight. >> reporter: donald trump greeted a crowd of supporters in new york but behind the scenes, a crisis was getting worse by the hour. key members of the republican party have pulled their support, after hearing trump's vulgar recorded comments about women. >> moved on her and i thought i'll admit it and i did try to bleep her but she was married. >> reporter: reaction to the tape has been fierce even from his own running mate mike pence said he cannot conn donor defend trump's remarks. house speaker paul ryan distanced there trump to saturday's republican rally and said he was sickened by his comments. >> i meant what i said and

write in mike pence instead. lobiondo said in part ivory pete thely strongly spoken out against mr. trump when he degrades, women, minority groups and gold star military families. i will not vote for a candidate who bowses sexual assault. it is in my conclusion that there. pennsylvania is a battle ground state in campaign 2016. senator bernie sanders campaigned for hillary clinton and katie mcginty at the university's south philadelphia. former presidential candidates spoke about raising the minimum wage, making public universities free and fighting global warming. >> where do we want to go in the future. what is our vision? that is pol tics. so i just want to touch on a few of the issues, as to why hillary clinton should be our next president. >> sanders also commented on

20 billion and hurricane katrina's 40 billion. edward lawrence, for cbs news, charleston south carolina. fatal accident as a public works complex in lower merion township is under investigation. police say a 68 year-old man was unloading garbage from his u-haul when he fell 45 feet down a trash pit. he later died at a hospital. lower merion refuge department was accepting household trash and recycling as part of their fall clean up event. nearly a dozen people are hurt in the train crash in garden city, new york. a commuter train derailed east of new york city after it hit a work train on the track. it happened after 9:00 near new hide hide park. spokesmen for long island railroad said 600 people were on the train when it crashed and fortunately none of the injuries are life threatening. train services have been suspended in both directions. and for the first time since a deadly train crash, in new jersey transit, it is reopening a portion of the hoboken terminal will tomorrow. the terminal had extensive tam

two competitors team up to honor memory of the political legend. the navy commissionedded the u.s.s. john p murtha during a ceremony on penns landing. congressman murtha represented western pennsylvania in washington for some 36 years. the former marine core officer was first vietnam war veteran's electric to the house of representatives. they came together to provide lunches at the ceremony. the dream of owning a home is becoming real for people who might not otherwise have been able to afford one.

"eyewitness news" reporter anita oh has the story about how volunteers are making it possible. >> reporter: for those who would live here these are more than just homes. >> i'm so excited, my sons are excited. >> reporter: they are shelter, and finally something, of their own. >> getting a mortgage is almost unaffordable and unrealistic if you are a single parent as i am so habitat headaches it, viable for us to actually be homeowners. >> reporter: le keisha brown a caseworker with two young sons says her cost of owning a home seem impossible until she discovered habitat for humanity's home ownership program. >> on average our families are paying anywhere from 500 to $650 a month with the zero interest mortgage which keeps the home affordable. >> is there a need for that zanes, duncan habitat philadelphia's director oven gauge. >> families in philadelphia, they do not have safe, adequate shelter, and lives

characteristics, still a very strong storm with wind of 75 and still got a lot of rain but it is heading east off the course of north carolina. that is good news. ocean city is seeing heavy rainfall right now. things will get better this afternoon along the shore. it is rough this morning. we will testify wait a few more hours to get outside to enjoy nice weather. wind advisory goes in effect this morning for the coast. check out storm scan three, lot have rainfall even with the center of the storm, i just saw hat race 30 miles to the east but heavy rain is to the north. but the front, with the moisture from matthew just bringing this heavy rain. so a cold front is drawing the moisture north ward. that front is hanging out over us but is there a sharp edge to the rain. you don't to have go far north and west of philadelphia to get this is dryer air. look at heavy rain in delaware and south jersey. give it a few more hours, probably by late morning a lot of the areas will be dryer. fifty's though, cooler then this time yesterday. sixty-one in millville.

fifty-seven in reading. the wind will kick up and continue to push in the cooler air mass. we have a typical fall forecast coming up, for the next several days. the coastal temperatures right now 63, stone harbor 61 in cape may. wind not an issue right now. look at the gusts over 20, 26 in millville. twenty-nine in dover. thirty-six in mount pocono but this will increase this afternoon once this cold front moves through and because of that a wind advisory goes into effect at 8:00 this morning until 6:00 this evening for parts of the south jersey and central and southern delaware. those locations could see gusts up to 45 miles an hour. now that is not coming from matthew that is coming from the cold front moving through and high pressure building back in. look at the center of the storm as of 5:00 o'clock. again not considered a hurricane anymore but still hurricane force wind at 75, moving east/north east at 14 but clouds just displaced to the north. it doesn't look like a tropical system. now is your typical strong low pressure system, think of it as a nor'easter, that continues to head out to sea

over next 48 hours and then will weaken. it will push this rain off shore. last 48 hours heavy rainfall in the the carolinas. ten, 15, close to 20 inches of rain in some locations, and even parts of the central virginia, look at richmond over 10 inches of rain on the rainfall. same deal for southern half of the del marva peninsula and still raining there. but by noon time mess of the rain should be off shore, still some cloud around this morning but into the afternoon we will see peaks of sunshine and just, increasingly windy, as it progresses in the evening hours. tomorrow looks great lots of sunshine. look at the temperatures with the sun we will struggle to get back to the lower 60's later this afternoon. chilly night tonight, widespread 40's even for the city, i wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the suburbs drop in the upper 30's and then tomorrow all we can do is rebound in the lower 60es a. so for today, rain around this morning,es specialry from the city south and east, staying clear and breezy. sixty-four for the high. tonight, chilly, still breezy,

waited flight 994 as it sat in the gate at louisville international airport. the consumer products safety commission announced a recall last month of a million samsung galaxy note seven phones, notes 92 reports of batteries overheating in the u.s. burning at least 26 people and damaging property, at least 55 times. >> we're moving aggressively to investigate this incident. >> reporter: head of the agency is looking into green's claim that the tea vice had over heated, was a replacement for the phone he turned in as part of the recall. green showed us the serial number which, according to samsung's web site is not among the list of affect devices. >> we need to figure that out and that has to be verified one way or another. >> reporter: for now brian green noise longer using a samsung phone. >> it the is just scary to think i could have been driving when this happened, someone could have had this in their luggage on the plane, under the plane and it could have been worth. >> reporter: samsung is working with authorities and southwest airlines to recover

it is sunday october 9th, good morning i'm rahel solomon. hopefully your day is starting off on a good note despite rain lets get out to justin drabick outside on the cbs-3 sky deck. you say there should be an end hopefully very soon. >> we have a few hours to go and you need umbrella out here coming down good in center city. you dent have to go too far north and west to get in the dryer air. it is a fine line where this rain is setting up but there is heavy rain off to the south and east and that will stay like that through the morning hours. check out storm scan three you will see brighter yellow around dover, delaware, into the shore points of the new jersey, right now that is heavier rain we are dealing with. this is combination of the cold front along with what is left, of matthew and again, steady rain that next several hours improving conditions by the afternoon, and we should see some sunshine. wind will kick up. for today rain around during the morning, south and east of philadelphia, turning windy, and just watch out for slow travel, ponding on the roads, with that potential heavy rainfall and flash flood watch

officers are dead. thirty-five year veteran jose gill vega and 18 month veteran leslie certificate any and they announced that the suspect accused of killing them is accused and is in custody. triple shooting, following what appeared to be a routine 911 call. mother say that her dult son was causing a disturbance. the office's arrived at home and tried to talk the suspect down. but things went ary. >> we were sitting here watching tv and we heard a couple b-gs and it went crazy. it was wrapped fire. >> reporter: all three officers were shot. >> officers from what i understand were near the front door trying to negotiate with the suspect, just to comply. it was a simple, mission and he elect to open fire. >> reporter: officers were rushed to the hospital, two died from their injuries. police joined the community in mourning, their lost, at a

vigil saturday night jose gill vega, father of eight, was 63 years old. he had been on the force for 35 years, and was set to retire this december. >> we have an officer who was qualified for retirement five years ago. here he is, 35 years in, and still pushing the patrol car, for our community, to make it better. on a day he wasn't even scheduled to work. >> reporter: officer leslie zereby was married to a, sheriff's deputy and return back from work from maternity leave their daughter was just four months old. >> here we have a wonderful, young, dedicated female officer, that pressed forward every day to make it better for everybody else. she gave it her all. >> reporter: palm springs police department is expected to provide more tea tails about at rest of the suspect whom they say is known to police, his identity has in the the yet been released.

wind will kick up as well, certainly will feel like october if you like fall weather. you'll love this forecast for the next 48 hours. but this moisture here is combined with matthew and a cold front which is pretty much lined up over us right now. that front squeezing out is what left of the moisture from post tropical cyclone matthew. it doesn't look like a hurricane. it lost tropical characteristics but still has hurricane force wind. center off hat race but moisture off to the north. you can see steady rains, delaware, south jersey. check it out dover delaware brighter yellow indicating heavier rain southward into sussex county. rain is lining upright along i-95. not much happening as we head toward chester county and northern bucks and montgomery and then that steady rain continues into south jersey. this continues through the morning, as what is left of matthew head back out to sea. you can see center right there 30 miles, east of cape hatteras north carolina. we have improvements in our forecast but decent amount of rain over past 24 hours, especially from the city south and east. like i said not much showing
