system continues to push to the east but dreary here in center city right new with the overcast skies. steady rain is happening. the it is chilly. 56 degrees with that rain and north wind at 22 miles an hour. it stays breezy throughout the day-to-day and that thort wind brings in cool air. if you love fall temperatures you'll like this forecast next few days. look at moisture situated over southern new jersey, delaware right now. that is pretty steady heavy rainfall but sharp edge to that rain just go a few miles north of the city where we are dry just with some cloud. we have 2 inches of rain in south jersey. flood advisory for cape may county and atlantic county. just watch out for possible, street flooding, maybe some of those smaller streams and creeks that could be on the rise later today. wind advisory until 6:00 this this evening. gusts to 45 for southern new jersey and delaware. it will kick up behind this cold front. temperatures holding in the mid to upper 50's, not much change today when some sunshine this afternoon getting up to 64 at best for

philadelphia, and windy at the shore throughout the entire day. dry in the poconos in the 50's. the here's what is happening with the cold front sweeping on through, wind kick up, we're talking about below average high temperatures next few days with cold nights ahead we will talk about it more with the full forecast in a few minutes, back to you. we will check back in, justin. developing this morning in california a policeman has a gunman in custody for killing two police officers and hurting another. one officer had just return to the force from maternity leave. the other was working an extra shift. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio is live from the cbs-3 sat center with live, good morning, cherri. >> reporter: good morning. after an eight hour standoff that included five round of tear gas, robots and bull horn negotiations the riverside county sheriff's deputy tweeted that the suspect has been taken in custody. man is accused of killing two police officers. six three-year old jose gill vega and 23 year-old leslie zereby leaving the palm springs community in mourning.

police and community members gathered saturday night, outside of the palm springs desert regional medical center. where officers leslie zereby and jose bill gert vega died of their wound. the officer's coffins were wheeled out of the hospital and gently lifted in to white hearsts, a third officer remains in the hospital. being treated for gunshot wound. police chief brian reyes says that the three officers were shot while answering a call from a women who said that her adult son was causing a disturbance. the chief said officers were at the front door of the home negotiating with the suspect when he decided to open up fire. two of the officers were killed. six three-year old jose gill vega, a father of eight was a 35 year veteran of the police department, he was scheduled to retire in december. twenty-seven year-old leslie zereby, had been on the force for 18 months, and recently returned from a maternity leave. she leaves behind a husband,

and their four month-old daughter. >> i'm awake this a it this mayor right now. palm springs has lost two brave officers. who go out every day and put their boots on the ground for everybody in this community. they david their all. >> reporter: police have not yet released the name of the suspect but he had several run ins with the law. palm springs police department is expected to provide tea tails regarding his arrest later this morning. live from the sat center, cherri gregg for kyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> cherri, thank you a lot more to come there, of course. police are investigating a shooting in north philadelphia police say a man was shot the in the shoulder and it happened at the 1:30 in the 2700 block of north franklin street. man is in stable condition n details on the shooter at this time. well, the second presidential debate is set for tonight, and in st. louis and steaks could not be higher, republican party has been in turmoil, after a recording surfaced showing donald trump

making vulgar comments against woman. jamie youkiss is in washington university where the candidates face off. >> reporter: donald trump greeted a crowd of supporters this new york but behind the scenes a crisis was getting worse by the hour. key members of the republican party, have pulled their support after hearing trump's vulgar recorded comments about women. >> i moved on her and i failed, i'll admit it. i did try to bleep her. she was married. >> reporter: reaction to the 2005 tape has been fierce even from his own running mate mike pence who said he cannot conn donor defend trump's remarks. paul ryan disinvited trum top saturday's republican rally and said he was sickened by his comments. >> i meant what i said and still how i feel. >> reporter: job cinnamon mccain joined dozens of republicans withdrawing support every g.o.p. woman in the senate condemned trump's remarks and some lawmakers have gone further demanding that he dropped out of the race.

gold star military family. i will not vote for a candidate who boosts of sexual assault. it is in my conclusion that mr. trump is unfit to be president. pennsylvania continues to be a battle ground state in 2016. senator sanders campaigned for hillary clinton and katie mcginty at university of arts in south philadelphia. former presidential candidate spoke there about raising the minimum wage, making public universities free, and fighting global warming. >> where do we wanting to in the future. what is our vision. that is politics. i just want to touch on a few of the issue as to why hillary clinton should be our next president. >> sanders also commented on hillary clinton's leaked speeches to wall street executives which appear to show she had a cozy relationship with the big banks that he, himself, wanted to break up. sanders said whatever clinton may have said behind closed doors is fine with him.

you can watch donald trump and hillary clinton square off for their second presidential debate tonight a lot of people expect to watch, starts at 9:00 on cbs-3 followed by "eyewitness news" at 11:00. matthew is a post tropical cyclone and heading out to sea. it dumped storms as far as hundred miles inland and being blamed for ten deaths in the u.s. and hundreds more in haiti. edward lawrence has more from charleston south carolina we were going to be out here for another two weeks or so. >> reporter: evacuees are waiting to return home aftermath you brought record breaking flooding and damaging winds to part of the south east hitting north carolina hard on saturday and overnight with torrential rain and destructive storm surge. the rain continues to soak region and stretch necessary to the mid-atlantic states, more than a foot fell in south east north carolina last night. >> it is all under water right now you. >> reporter: deluge reached as far west as raleigh-durham damaging homes and businesses.

search and rescue team there new york city saved three people in fayetville after their suv got stuck in the rushing water. matthew hug south east coastline moving north sparing coastal communities from severe wind but causing devastating flooding like here in charleston. there are reports of the scattered looting at homes and businesses including this gas station in garden city, georgia. >> pretty frustrated because people don't care about, what they got, i mean local store right here, here to help community and everything trying to get opened up. >> reporter: matthew caused coastal erosion wiping away beaches and destroying coastal roads. experts predict matthew will leave behind four to 6 billion collars of damage here in the u.s. impressive some but far less than super storm san i, 20 billion and hurricane katrina 40 billion. edward lawrence for cbs news, charleston south carolina. back here at home a fatal accident at a public works township in lower merion township has been under investigation. a 68 year-old man was

unloading garbage from his you hall when he fell 45 feet down a trash pit. he later died at a hospital. lower merion refuge department was accepting household trash and recycling as part of the fall lean up event. merely a dozen people are hurt in a train crash in garden city, new york. a commuter train derailed east of new york city after it hit a work train on the track. it happened after 9:00 near new hyde park. spokesmen for long island railroad said 600 people were on the train when it crashed but then none of the injuries are life threatening. the train service has been suspended in bet directions. for the first time since a deadly train crash new jersey transit is reopening a portion of the hoboken terminal tomorrow. the terminal sustained extensive damage, following the train crash on september 29th investigators say morning rush her train accelerated just before the accident, and then the engineer put on the breaks less than one second before the collision. one person standing on the track died more than 110 others were hurt. is there still much more

two competitors team up to honor memory of the political legend. the navy commissioned the u.s.s. john p murtha during a ceremony on penns landing. congressman murtha represented western pennsylvania in washington for 36 years. form mare reen core officer was first vietnam war veteran's elected to the house of representatives. they came together to provide lunches at the ceremony. well, dream of owning a home is now real for people who otherwise may not have been able to afford one. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh has a story of how volunteers are making it all possible. >> reporter: to those who will live here these are more than just homes. >> i'm so excited. my sons are excited. >> reporter: they are shelter, solace and finally something of their own.

steady rain continuing to fall. basically from the city, on southward. check it the out there was really no movement in that northern edge of the rain, just stuck, just north of philadelphia, so we will be good northern bucks and montgomery and chester county and ports northward. those cloud will give waste to sunshine. slow progression east this morning but still steady rain south injuries think to delaware. we have reports of 2 inches of rain, flood advisory for parts of the southern new jersey, cape may county and atlantic county. so just watch out for potential for flooded roadways, ponding, high crow planing and reduced visibility when traveling this morning. the these are rain estimates, over past 24 hours. you can see that edge over philadelphia going southward and amounts start piling up. again in the yellow and orange, two to 3 inches on have rain from dover southward, closer to 4-inch's cross extreme southern delaware. not good news because they are coming off that storm, that dropped 13 inches of rain in sussex county, delaware. that is why a flash flood watch is in effect for kent,

sussex, through noon time today. temperatures it is cool right now. that wind and rain, 50's, and they will hold steady next several hours. here's cool air to the north and west. forty-one in michigan. forty-six. thirty's in minneapolis. that chilly air mass will spread south and east once this front moves through. we are talking about below average temperatures for next few days. where we should be is closer to 70, not happening. we will bean low that, today, tomorrow, tuesday, we will be close to average for wednesday and thursday and we will get back to below average by even of the week into next weekend and stay cool up the mountains. typical. but pretty nice. partly sunny skies. 58 degrees in the poconos. mid 50's tomorrow. we have plenty of sunshine. back to the lower 60's on tuesday. starting to get that change in the fall foliage and what you want is a mild afternoon and cool nights and we will get that next few days. high colored change in new england and not a whole lot yet around delaware valley. we will get our peak in october. we have a few weeks to go but

starting to see that change across northern mountains of pennsylvania. here's the latest on matthew post tropical cyclone, lost tropical characteristics. it does not look like a hurricane. clouds displaced to the north. 60 miles off the coast of hat race. wind at 75. that is hurricane force. storm continues to track off to the east. it stays. we don't get that loop back to the south. we have left over moisture with the front moving on in but once it clears it, north wind really kicking up, high pressure builds back in and we will drop temperatures. through noon time, steady rain from the city south and east, still lingering rain early this afternoon. we will get clearing skies. tonight it is clear, breezy, tomorrow lots have of sunshine, good looking columbus day. not a trend that will continue into tuesday. temperatures today look at that struggling to get back to the low to hid 60's. chilly tonight. we will be at lower 40's in a lot of spots by early tomorrow morning. maybe some 30's in the coldest suburbs, morning rain, and

then clearing skies, this afternoon. here's the extended forecast. dry stretch ahead. a lot of sunshine. down to 70. rahel, back to you. justin, thank you. time 8:21. lets check with ann evans in the cbs-3 traffic center and see how weather is tracking the roads and tracking on closures. >> reporter: we have lot of weather conditions out there that are not really great to be driving around in. we have wind driven rain in the highways, so drive carefully. a lot of reports of hydroplaning this morning. again just take your time. what we are looking at now is columbus boulevard shut down between spring garden street and sprees street for 5,000 run dash and walk. you can see folks heading there to the right of the screen and walk that is happening. but this portion of the columbus boulevard it shut down between spruce street and since we are in the general area, couple other events causing road closures among them arch street westbound between second street and fourth street for old city festival. at wells fargo certainty on

cloudy skies from the city south and east we're dealing with steady rain during morning hours but we will start to dry out, heading lake this morning in the afternoon and should see sunshine but will turn windy, colder as well. rain's we are dealing with ace combination of the cold front and less with matthew. you can see that steady rain setting up north of the city and then south and east, and pockets of heavier rain continuing to hit the shore pretty hard, you can see brighter yellow there in south jersey and delaware we have flood warnings there. just watch out for ponding on the roads, and roads, maybe smaller streams, or creeks could be on the rise later this morning into today. rain around, mainly during morning south and east, and in philadelphia, slow travel, a lot of ponding on the roads, hydroplaning going on and watch out for some clearing, basically from west to east, flood advisory for coastal new jersey cape may county and, eastern atlantic county and wind advisory is in effect until 6:00 o'clock this this evening for southern new

that the suspect a accused of killing them is now in custody. a triple shooting, following what appeared to be a routine, 911 call, a mother said her adult son was causing a disturbance, the officers arrived at the home and tried to talk the suspect down but things went ary. >> we were sitting here watching tv and we heard a couple bang, bang and looked out and went crazy, it was wrapped fire. >> reporter: all three officers were shot. >> officers there what i understand were near the front door trying to negotiate with the suspect just to comply. it was a simple, domestic advertise turn and he elect to open fire. >> reporter: officers were rushed to the hospital two died from their injuries. police joined the community in mourning their loss. the in a vigil, officer gill vega, a father of eight was 63 years old. he had been on the force for 35 years and set to retire this december. >> we have an officer who was
