"eyewitness news" reporter anita oh shows us what the two sides are arguing over and how riders would be impacted. >> reporter: more than 5700 septa works could work out if officials can't agree by the time contracts expire on october 31st >> it's the way it is around the country. somebody has to push back. we're going to push put back. >> reporter: by an overwhelming vote, members of the transport workers union local 234 authorized a strike unless they can keep quality benefits and pension. >> they want to take us out of what we are in now and put in a

alleyser plan. >> reporter: the potential strike would affect busses, trolleys and local rails like the market frankford and broad street lines, it would not affect the regional rail. that's because those workers are part of a separate union. still a walk-out would affect the tens of thousands who rely on public transportation. >> i don't know what anyone would do. they want to be able to get anywhere. >> some say they understand why workers would strike. >> this is my side, is this -- it's hurting me, but on their side also, i mean, they have to feed their children also. i can't sit here and judge. >> if you can make your workers happy, then try it. negotiate. >> reporter: that's what officials from both parties have been trying to do since july. in statement to "eyewitness news" septa officials wrote, while we hope that the union does not exercise its right to strike, we're focusing on reaching a new contract in the best interest of our riders, employees and stake holder, as of now, there is no set date for a meeting between septa and union officials.
