"eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live, and you spoke with former governor ed rendell to get his take on what happened. >> reporter: jessica, pennsylvania is now a red state, there is no question if you look at those numbers last night, how pennsylvania turned out for this presidential election. tonight i did speak to former governor ed rendell, a popular blue face living in the red state. he is upset. i wanted to do election postmortem. >> she didn't run a good campaign. she wasn't a great candidate.
6:01 pm
i believe with all my heart she would have been a terrific president. >> reporter: former pennsylvania governor ed rendell is upset not only because hillary clinton won't be president but that his beloved pennsylvania, is now a red state that helped donald trump win the white house. >> totally disinterested in learning anything about what goes on. he has made no effort to learn about foreign affairs or the military. >> reporter: rendell just doesn't professionally necessity clintons they are close friend and have been for years. he believes campaign staffers, knew hillary clinton was in trouble when vermont a liberal state went her way but with lower numbers then expected. >> as soon as i saw that figure i turn to the people i was watching with and i said we're in trouble. >> reporter: rendell was one of the main drivers to bring democratic national convention in philadelphia. he did. he is expect to deliver a pennsylvania victory for clinton. exactly the opposite happened. >> i think it is a red state today but that doesn't mean it
6:02 pm
will stay a red state. >> reporter: down balance odd from the presidency pat toomey took his second term in the u.s. senate. his race against katie mcginty most expensive senate race in american history. quotes from rendell praising toomey in the past made it the in the republican senator's pitch to the public. rendell wishes toomey and trump the best. >> i'm an american first, democrat second. i think what hillary said this morning is right, we all have to give him an opportunity. >> reporter: if hillary clinton went to the white house as forty-fifth president, ed rendell said mayor jim kenney in philadelphia would have had easy access pipeline to the white house. that will the not be the case right now. former mayor ed rendell suggested that mayor jim kenney, actually buddy up a little bit with senator pat tomb toy get things done here in philadelphia reporting live, from center city, david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". members of the donald trump's transition team conduct their first briefing with the president-elect at

trump tower this have afternoon. trump celebrated his upset victory over hillary clinton with supporters in new york city early this morning. during his speech the president-elect said a different tone then rhetoric he used during his campaign. instead of the conflict, trump says he wants peace. >> working together we will begin the urgent task of rebuilding our nation and renewing the american dream. i have spent my entire life in business, looking at the untapped potential in projects and in people all over the world. that is now what i want to do for our country. >> donald trump will be the forty-fifth president of the united states when he takes the oath have of office, in january. hillary clinton called donald trump to congratulate him on his election victory overnight but waited until hours later to deliver her concession speech. she was joined on stage by her husband former president bill clinton and daughter chelsea
6:04 pm
at new yorker hotel in manhattan. there she thanked her supporters and staff for a hard for the campaign and although she was disappointed with the outcome trump deserves an opened mine. >> this is painful and it will be for a long time but i want you to remember this. our campaign was never about one person or even one's lex. it was about the country that we love, and about building an america that is hopeful, inclusive, and big hearted. >> clinton has not said what is next for her but she did urge support tours work for a better nation. president obama addressed the nation vowing to do all he can to facilitate a smooth transition for president-elect trump. he called to congratulate the president-elect this morning and invited him to the white house tomorrow. >> we are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country.

the peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy and over the next few months we are going to show that to the world. >> the president also spoke with secretary clinton today and he praised her career in public service. the day after the election voters are reacting to how it all unfolded especially in the swing state of pennsylvania which turned red this time around. "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden joins us from king of prussia with more on that tonight, joe, good evening. >> reporter: good evening. the this was a unscientific polling. so we posted up outside a wawa in lansdowne and then hit up main street in west reading, our question simple: what did you think about last night. >> i think it was a good decision on his part because he went in the rural areas and able to get the vote, which we never thought that would happen. >> very disgusted. very upset. this country will be horrible.
6:06 pm
i will not want him to represent me overseas. >> i think we have to move forward. being so divided isn't good for either side and not good for anybody. >> reporter: what do you think. >> he is tough but that is what we need in the white house. >> i think the whole election was based off of hatred and not moving forward. >> if you told me he was the guy his whole premise was to bring people apart and then together. >> i thought it was ridiculous to be that close and it kind of shows me how people honestly feel. >> my daughter said that the mean guy one, the mean guy. i said yes, the mean guy won. this is our president now. we have to pray for the best. >> reporter: lots of opinions out there, and to summit up most of consensus that it wasn't how big donald trump won in pennsylvania it was how bad hillary clinton lost here. in king of prussia live tonight joe holden for cbs-3 "eyewitness news".
6:07 pm
>> thanks very much. as he mentioned philadelphia's surrounding suburbs played a key role in swinging pennsylvania in the red. and when you look at the state as a whole you can see most of the counties, went to donald trump but closer look at southeastern part of the state showed clinton still carried those expected counties. the problem down here, it is the margin for her. in philadelphia county clinton cleaned uptaking 82 percent of the vote, that is 455,000 more votes then trump. that was expect. but surrounding counties is where we saw that difference n bucks county, 48 percent, each with clinton holding a 2,000 vote edge. and montgomery county, a wider lead as clinton took 59 percent to trump's 38 percent. in chester county a smaller but still fairly sizable lead, 53 percent to 43 percent. and a nearly 25,000 vote lead for hillary clinton. finally delaware county where clinton rolled to a 12 percent advantage, 59 to 37 over trump. that is a lot of thumbs.
6:08 pm
we want to talk about them now. joining me is chris stigall from wpht. we will take a closer look. in looking at those numbers, hearing from those voters that joe talk to, is what your take on the bill a suburbs. >> reporter: it is pretty clear that mrs. clinton did not do what she wanted to do. she got about right at what they were hoping in philadelphia, 450,000, 450,000, 455, it wasn't quite what she wanted, she could have done much better. the suburbs, did well for her too as you just pointed out, jessica but it was wet. and that is what was remarkable, although it is notable that here in the philadelphia suburbs and this is something to point out it doesn't happen very often. there were a couple of ward for donald trump that don't typically happen. you are talking about a ward in philadelphia that hasn't been carried by a republican instant 1988, just looking at data here, three ward, two in
6:09 pm
northeast philadelphia, one in south philadelphia carried by donald trump. that is fairly uncommon. of course, as you go west that is where donald trump really shined shore brightly. >> you talk to vote's lot on your radio show, what are you hearing from them today as they look forward to president-elect trump. >> i personally don't feel that there is a lot of end zone dancing. trump voters to my mind just don't necessarily feel like they beat mrs. clinton as much as they are trying to reverse what they feel was the last eight years of some pretty activist federal government. they hope that donald trump will reverse course. it is not so much about what they will, what donald trump and the government will do, what the republicans will do to the american election, it is what they hepp they will undue, like obama care for instance. >> that probably at top of the
6:10 pm
list, trump has talk about that a and now with full control of congress that is likely to happen. chris, before we go, it is anybody's guess at this point exactly how donald trump will govern, dare you take a stab at that one. >> well, no i can't, i don't know, it is anybody's guess. you asked me what people are looking for, those that voted for donald trump. the supreme court ranks number one but i can tell you this that the vast majority of the donald trump voters will be watching him closely with the republican house and senate to make sure that he unwind, undoes, steps back from what many of trump voters feel was an activist role in government. >> chris, thanks so much for joining us. we appreciate it. >> thank you. for a run down of the election results go to cbs philly.com to see a full list of race results from across the tri-state region. as we continue tonight encouraging news months after an atlantic city officer was
