time to hit the ground running philadelphia marathon getting ready to start. philadelphia region is waking up to a big chill, what is making it worse is this how strong the wind will gust. busy weekend for trump transition team find out who is meeting and how soon he may announce more cabinet choices. today is sunday november 20th, good morning, i'm rahel solomon. eyewitness weather is coming up shortly but runners from across the country are taking part in the 23rd annual philadelphia marathon. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio is live along ben franklin parkway where race is set to start any moment now, cherri, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rahel. race just started. as you can see runners are off to their start. they were standing at the starting line here right off ben franklin parkway just a moment ago jumping trying to stay warm. it is very windy, cold out here but they kicked off a lot of those layers and they have

taken off, the race starts here at eakins oval and goes down the parkway to race street and then up to columbus boulevard, around mlk drive, kelly drive, and on to east falls to finish right here back at the parkway. the average runner, the more elite runners will take a couple hours to finish this race but as you can see people have colorful clothing on, many of them, hats, winter hats to try to keep themselves warm as they continue on this race. now i have to point out there are two different things this year, first the half marathon took place on the saturday and today, these are, there are only marathon runners, about 30,000 of them. they will be starting in waves. we started with the wheelchair participants and now, we have the first wave of elite runners and second wave will start momentarily. lots of cold here. it hasn't stopped spectators from lining up. thousands are gathered here on

the ben franklin parkway. there is lots of security. there were extremely long lines with the security. we have to go through that just like everybody else. but this is definitely there. you can feel the excitement. the announcers here today gave runners a pep talk telling them they could make it through wind, cold and enjoy this wonderful, wonderful marathon day. live on eakins oval, cherri gregg for kyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". running is one way to keep warm on a blustery day like this lets get over to meteorologist justin drabick. bundling up like cherri was like there, another good way to see cherri wearing her hat and her gloves. >> just stay home watching football today. >> or just watch us. >> watch us, chill out at home. >> good idea. >> but we can go back to yesterday. yesterday was so nice. >> so nice. >> seventy's, light breeze. >> what is this a 30, 40-degree difference. >> it dropped 38 degrees, 34 degrees in eight hours

yesterday, so big difference. it is the wind. that is the problem. that is the deal. temperatures in the 40's, that is not terribly cold today but when you factor in these wind we have 20's and 30's for the wind chill and that will stick with us throughout the day-to-day and first half of monday. we will be stuck in the cold weather pattern leading up to the thanksgiving day holiday. we're dry right now. there has been reports of 2 inches of snow up in berks county from last night as that cold front came in and that cold air rapidly moved in. thirty-nine right now at the airport. west wind at 18 miles an hour. feeling like 30 right now. we have a little bit of sun but those clouds will thicken up progressing through the morning hours because we have cold air in the atmosphere. that helps produce clouds. wind advisory now extended until 6:00 o'clock tomorrow morning. gusts could get up to 50 miles an hour throughout the day-to-day. there is sustained wind right out of the west at 20 miles an hour right now, they will continue to increase this morning. wind chill values continue to drop, now it feels like the mid 20's in the coldest spots,

allentown, 27 in reading, 14 on exposed skinnies what it feels like in mount pocono. snows showers are flying north and west of us across western pennsylvania, snow showers could get in the poconos and lehigh valley through the morning and afternoon. like i said, actual air temperatures about 10 degrees below, in the 40's, but it is wind that will make it feel like 20's and 30's. it does stay cool for next few days. then we will talk about our next storm system impacting us thanks giving day and we will talk about that in weather in a few minutes. >> see you then, justin, thank you. new this morning a man is recovering after an overnight shooting in north philadelphia. it happened on temple's health science campus at the 1300 west allegheny avenue, police say a 22-year old man was shot in the leg and arm, but so far no arrests. philadelphia police are looking in the stabbing in the the city's society hill section. this took place overnight on south street near third street, abe a man suffered minor stab wound to the back and transported to jefferson hospital, no arrests have been made. and flames tore through a house in north philadelphia, fire fighters rushed to 27th

and cabbage streets at 12:45 to battle the flames. they did have it in control in 20 minutes no one was hurt. no word on what sparked the fire. well, philadelphia police continue to look for a driver in the deadly hit and run. family and friend in overbrook remembered the eight year-old girl who died. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan talked to the victim's mother who made a plea for the driver to come forward. >> she was so young, she was a princess. >> reporter: suffering more pain then any mother should have to bear community is trying to hold up iisha powell, a car fatally struck her daughter jay and a pound as she was walking home with her three siblings. >> that was my baby, my heart, she's gone, joy anna is gone. >> reporter: speaking before the vigil before jayanna said lack of concern is hardest part to accept. >> you hit some kids and just kept going. you just kept going. you didn't stop. you didn't say nothing.

the you just left them on the street, innocent babies. >> reporter: incident happened at 63rd and lansdowne, police say the suspect drove a silver nissan sedan. around 4:00 saturday afternoon community held a vigil at that spot, some signed a petition calling on the city to take a closer look at the safeness of the intersection. many called on the driver to turn themselves in. >> if somebody seen something, if you seen it, speak it. you hit two children and took one life. my family will never be the same. >> reporter: hoping to send jayanna their love as she rests up above they released her favorite color balloons, pink and purple. >> that was my angel, i called her whom i's angel and now she really is a angel. >> reporter: family says they will start a movement justice for jay and printout flyers and walk around their neighborhood to try to get people to come forward, with more information. i'm cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". philadelphia police also continue their search for suspects in connection with the shooting of an off-duty police officer. chopper three was overhead

friday near 11th and parish in north philadelphia. police say officer angelo romero was going inside his home with his two-year old son when two men started shooting. officer romero was struck by a bullet with his gun and hit by fragments in both legs. authorities say the officer was not the intended target. president-elect trump hints he may announce more cabinet choices today. he is meeting with new jersey governor christies a recently demoted from the transition team. yesterday mr. trump met with potential cabinet appointees and other visitors at his golf club in new jersey. rocks sane a has the latest from bedminster. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump and vice-president elect mike pence appeared to be upbeat as they left trump's golf club in new jersey. for most of the day mr. trump conduct interviews with potential cabinet members. >> tremendous talent. people that as i say, we will make america great again. >> reporter: mitt romney who once called trump a conn man and phony was among the

danny davis grandson was shot and killed in his home in chicago. two teens broke in the home of the 15 year-old yes on wilson and started arguing over a pair have of basketball shoes. that is when one of the teens shot wilson in the head. congressman davis says his grandson was a victim of a world where gun violence is commonplace. >> this is another example of a 15 year-old, with a gun that he never should have had. he never should have have had access to. >> reporter: chicago police say two juveniles are in custody and they are preparing to announce charges soon. investigators say mechanical problems apparently caused an air ambulance flight to crash in nevada. three crew members and patient died after take off friday night. police believe twin engine plane of reno based american life, apparently experienced mechanical problems as it it was climbing out on a flight for salt lake city.

incredible. we will be able to see inside these storms and help us forecast. good things to come over next few months. interesting stuff happening right now across the region. we will see snow flying. not uncommon. this is in monroe county becauseheadsville pleasant valley. if you look closely enough snow showers, moving on through and then a little bit of the dusting there along the grass areas. that is possible, in the poconos, possibly some of those snow showers getting through the lehigh valley as well. impressive amounts from the last night as front moves through, that rain rapidly changed over to snow. we have a quick 2.2 inches in salisbury township lehigh county. the whole nation. huff's church in berks county had elevation there with 2-inches from last night. forks township in northampton county, half inch. bill getsville .3 inches of snow and we had a trace in mount holy, new jersey. snow flakes were flying last night with that cold air moving in. and temperatures, really dropped. 2:00 o'clock yesterday in philadelphia, 72 degrees. that was a high temperature.

by ten it was 38. 34-degree drop in just eight hours. that is how strong that front was. and it the is a cold canadian air mass settling in. snow showers, flying in central western pennsylvania, and some of those, get thing to the poconos right now. maybe in the lehigh valley. you may even see a stray flurry here around philadelphia, later this morning into the afternoon. won't amount to anything. other than that, mostly cloudy skies to day, just windy, pretty chilly when you factor in the wind. we will start to to clear out overnight tonight, tomorrow we should see more sunshine, with you it still stays cold this time of the year. the wind will be the problem, the next 24 hours, gusting to 45 degrees near 50 to today and tonight out of the west, still windy conditions during the day monday. wind chill values, down to the 20's. check it the out. generally we have got 20 to low to mid 30's at best, that is what it will feel like this afternoon. even though the air temperatures will climb into the 40's, and then tonight, another cold night, could feel like single digits in the mountains, teens and 20's, everybody else. and then tomorrow a very cold day. so you will need that winter

weather gear if you are heading outdoors over the next 24 hours. forty-six for the actual air temperature today, partly to mostly cloudy skies, to still stays windy and cold tonight. thirty-two for the low in the city. we will drop colder in the suburbs. the wind chill values will be the problem. that is really the story over next few days. overall it is a cold pattern, mid 40's, that is 10 degrees below average for the highs. both today and tomorrow upper 40's on tuesday, should start to feel better, with that wind backing off, and travel positions, look great, across the mid-atlantic and northeast. the roadways and skies. that is good. getting to your holiday destination. but thursday itself could run into a few light rain showers. no big deal. temperatures do warm up back in the 50's, and then, of course, the holiday shopping kicks off, well, now, it is thanksgiving night, they are all out there, all night long, friday looks good. should be dry. temperatures in the the 50's. so a pretty good forecast leading up to thanksgiving we have to get through this wind and cold today. >> justin. it seems like yesterday it was just warmer and sunny.

insurance institute for highway safety. three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan looked at new research which shows child booster seats are more effective then ever when it comes to protecting kids. >> reporter: kate perkins will soon need a booster seat for three-year old emma growing fast. >> i want one, that will go in tight. >> reporter: mom of the two has plenty of good options, insurance institute for high waste safety reviewed 53 of the latest booster seat models, 48 of them got the highest rating called a best bet. >> things have improving since we first started evaluating boosters back in 2008, back then only about a quarter of the seats got top rating of best bet. >> reporter: booster seats are made for kids who have out grown their car seats but they are not big enough to use a seat belt on their own. only two seats are not recommended, the costco easy elite and costco high back two in 1dx. the insurance institute says belts fit improperly but the manufacturer, said in a statement that they are built to provide children excellent

sleep apnea effects millions of people, main symptom is daytime sleepiness and doctors say it can be especially dangerous when not diagnosed. "eyewitness news" health reporter stephanie stahl, explains. >> reporter: people with sleep apnea temporarily stop breathing, repeatedly, which disrupts sleep. about 25 million americans have it, mostly men, but doctors say that the numbers are much higher because many cases are undiagnosed. >> their sleep is really poor quality and they wake up constantly tired. >> reporter: doctor boone, an ent sleep specialist at thomas jefferson university hospital says sleep apnea lowers blood oxygen levels causing serious health problems and kay time sleepiness impairs cognitive function, memory and decision making. >> it has huge impacts in your general well-being and quality of life. >> reporter: sleep apnea is implicated in the fatal hoboken train crash. new jersey transit engineer was diagnosed with the disorder after the accident. >> it certainly can cause you

taking a sunday, it is november 20th, good morning, i'm rahel solomon. let's get out to justin drabick on the cbs-3 sky deck with eyewitness weather. it is a beautiful shot. >> it is it the is deceiving. it is very cold. >> we do have some sunshine out here right now, thinks most sun as we will see as clouds progress in the later morning hours into the afternoon but as you said, down right cold. the wind is how long outside. we will talk about wind chills 20's and 30's today. wind advisory extended now until 6:00 o'clock monday morning for the entire region. so we are talking about gusts,

40 to even 50 miles an hour. that could lead to power outages over next 24 hours. winds will continue to increase over the next few hours, so now we are gusting close to 30 miles an hour. we still have a few more miles an hour to go here before we get to that 40 to 50 miles an hour range. the wind chills will actually drop over next few hours. earlier this morning in the lower 30's. now we are seeing mid 20's in the lehigh valley where it feels like 26 in allentown, 14 is what it feels like on exposed skin in mount pocono. we have snow showers flying in the poconos at this hour and in the mountains over western pennsylvania. a few stray snow flakes could break into the least high valley and far northwestern suburbs into bucks and montgomery county as well. overall today air temperatures running 10 degrees below average, strong wind gusts, put them values in the 20's. a few snow flakes possible, this november chill does stick around for next few days. we will talk about what that means for the thanksgiving day holiday inn a few more minutes, back over to you.

well, the excitement, and adrenaline filled runners and spectators alike at 23rd annual philadelphia marathon. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio is live on the park waste where runners continue to push themselves and just keep going. good morning, cherri. >> reporter: good morning, rahel. yes, we heard pep talks from the announcers this morning, giving the runners an extra little push that they need to battle this cold and to battle this wind. lets take a look. this is another wave of runners that have been coming through. they began at 7:00 o'clock this morning and they just keep coming. 30,000 participants this year, coming through for this very popular philadelphia marathon. right here now i'm with ron martinson, he is the elite race coordinator, the folks who are very fast and they are very much in the front. so what is the biggest challenge today for these runners. >> i think biggest challenge today is mental one. always a challenge for the marathon mentally but wind can be frustrating when you are

running into it. just staying positive, and focusing on just keep going to day. >> reporter: yes, yes. you can hear people cheering behind me, how important are the cheering squads that are sort of scattered all throughout the race route. >> it is a huge help. when you get late in the races specially and feeling down to hear that crowd, and if you see somebody they are yelling out your name, and they have their names on so people can yell, specifically, it just wakes you up late in the race and gets you to get adrenaline flowing again, and helps you get through the last tough miles. >> lets talk about that, the race starts here at eakins oval and goes down and around the parkway to race street and up columbus boulevard around chestnut to mlk drive, kelly drive, east falls and it end right here along ben franklin parkway. twenty-six plus miles, and, of course, around mile 20 you are just going on auto pilot. >> twenty is where that race

starts to get tough. even if you are having a good day, 20 miles on is very tough. thankfully for this race manayunk is an awesome section, crowds come out in manayunk, crowd enjoy themselves out there and it pumps up marathoners. >> reporter: definitely. lead runners should be getting in just after 9:00, around 9:15, everybody else after that. there are tents set up to get warm once they get back here and as they just enjoy one of the most popular marathons you said one of the best race routes in the country. live at eakins oval, cherri gregg for kyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> cherri, thank you. good to see them having fun despite cooler temperatures. yesterday runners competed in the first of two races in the philadelphia marathon. hundreds pounded the pavement for half marathon and thousands of spectators cheered them on. >> it is awesome. the great the day, beautiful. the crowd is amazing.

the race has been fun. >> people from philadelphia are very warm. it the is good here. i have a good feeling, the city of brotherly love. >> that race took place the day before the marathon to reduce congestion and allow runners to have their own unique racing experience. well, mummers are giving back to the community, ahead of the thanksgiving. members from 38 brigades gathered at shooting stars clubhouse in south philadelphia. they have packed up boxes of food, clothing and delivered them to the homeless and veterans in need at philadelphia's veterans comfort house. >> no veterans will get hungry during thanksgiving or cold in the winter. without veterans doing what they do and sacrificing, we do not get to instruments our -- strut our stuff on new years day. they risk their life for us so we can live our daily life. there is no better way to thank america for what it has given me then thanking a veteran. >> and the mummers organization, began collecting donated items on november 1st.

a very special thanksgiving celebration in philadelphia. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan shows you why there was extra reason to be thankful for dozens gathered for a holiday meal. >> reporter: this week charities will be dishing out thanksgiving meals in all different communities to all different people, in the the group eating saturday afternoon at arch street united methodist church was diverse but almost all of them have one thing in common: this is their first thanksgiving day ever. >> there are many things that i am hoping for. i'm waiting for this holiday. i like it. >> reporter: this is the nationalities services center annual thanksgiving celebration. they are philadelphia's largest refugee settlement agency and this year alone they have helped more than 500 displaced people make a home in the u.s. beginning with the pilgrims, what says welcome to america better than thanksgiving. >> we're all thankful for what we have had and these individuals have struggled to just gain safety. >> reporter: as soon as four year-old jason was born his

parents fled from syria. after four years on the mom, the mommies in the college and the dad, has a full-time job. what are you thankful for this thanksgiving. >> actually, i'm thankful for being here on america. >> reporter: this man lost his sight to the bomb but says he is thankful to survive leaving his war torn country in the horn of africa. >> everything is nice, well and fine. >> reporter: since the refugee act in 1980, u.s. settled more foreign refugees then all other nations queened. have they go through a 18 to 24 month training process. refugee advocates hope president-elect donald trump will continue the program. >> we just hope and ask that the new administration lot the resettlement and that they continue to be a big part in refugee resettlement. >> reporter: food to consider this thanksgiving. speaking of which, what do you think of this thanksgiving day food. >> it is very sweet. >> the sweet potatoes, pumpkin

afternoon hours, because we have so many cold air in the, upper atmosphere that helps produce those clouds. lets go up to mount pocono. that is not manmade snow. that is not from snow from last night. couple inches being reported, in the highest elevations of northern new jersey and carbon, monroe counties. so there it goes, certainly a wintry scene there across the poconos, this morning. yesterday, press i incredible. temperatures well in the 70's, upper 50's, close to 60's in the poconos. now we are dealing with some snow, big difference. strong cold front yesterday evening, really kick up the wind that brought that steady rain and snow into parts of the region. today we are stuck with air temperatures in the 40's. that chilly air mass sticks around for next few days, as the reason the jet stream taking a dive to the south. now we have got this cold pocket of air situated over mid-atlantic and north east. at least through the upcoming thanksgiving holiday. high temperatures running below average, leading up to thursday, and you can see that spin in the atmosphere.

that is the storm stuck over new york state right now, cold air funneling in. we have had snow showers breaking out late, western pennsylvania, and upstate, new york and those snow showers coming in the poconos this morning. maybe lehigh valley and northern bucks, montgomery county, we will see a few flakes as well. storm that didn't move much in the next 24 hours. here it is this afternoon just north of boston, tomorrow afternoon, it is slightly, further to the north, we're stuck in the wind, energy. so windy conditions, continue from this storm, but at least the next 24 hours. but we will be dry, that is a good thing. if you have big travel plans after thanksgiving across the region, both on the roads, and skies, looking pretty good across mid-atlantic and southeastern united states. so, wednesday is a big travel day, all should be good. wind gusting to 30, 40, close to 50 miles an hour later this afternoon into tonight. so again, power outage, possible over the next 24 hours. it is still at least first half of monday we will be dealing with those strong wind gusts, continuing to bring in that wind.

>> she is a rot of character, sweet dog. we have other animals, and we will also talk about thanksgiving, and showing some of the adoptable animals at pennsylvania spca. let's get to solve these adoptable animals. if you are in the the market for a lovely cat, how about toto. pulled from another shelter in pennsylvania, super friendly. she loves to be picked up, held in your arms. she's purring. a great cat. and speaking of toto, here we have two of them here. we have cc and mini, they are two a durable, two month-old female grade kittens that came from the pennsylvania spca from another shelter. they are very friendly. they love to be cuddled, and they are just cute, playful. here's a dog, i want everybody to take a look at. this is magnum. his owner just died. and this poor doggies now in the shelter and is one of my many reminders, make sure you know if something happens to you that someone will take your dog. spca is taking this dog,

pennsylvania spca, 350 erie avenue but this baby is used to being in a home. he is sweet as can be. he needs to find his family. you know, i just adopted a dog, two weeks ago, marvin, on the show. i'm really into what happens when you first adopt a dog here from a shelter. i will tell you what he has brought such joy to my life. it is unbelievable. this dog ready to go. you might completely bypass him when you walk through the shelter. i want to show you, do sort of a combination. talk about some of the dangers of the foods that we give our animals on thanksgiving which is, they are not giving thanks for this. the petties not. and i want to show you animals in the shelter, you can see when you walk by these cages you look at them and you go oh, well, i don't want that barking. there is a dog that belongs in somebody's yard running around, having fun. here's a dog that needs a lot

of exercise. >> they look excited. >> we have a big camera walking by, that got them going. they need a lot of exercise and they need to get it. that one is shy, afraid. take these animals out of that situation, get them out in the play yard at pennsylvania spca, get them away from that and it is just like with marvin the one i just adopted. you see their personality, absolutely blossom. i don't want people to go to the shelter to see, i don't like that environment. it business their environment. separate them from the cage environment which is stressful for all of them. let's talk about thanksgiving day food. couple of big no, no's. well, let's talk about dolly first. okay, look at dolly. dolly looks like a lab, from here to here. >> completely. >> then you get these legs and she's part bass set hound. you you can see. >> yes. >> there is a real mixture here. she's a three-year old female. she's great. they believe she probably is house broken because second they get her out of the cage,

she's doing what she's supposed to be doing but she's friendly, sweet. >> such a doll. >> absolutely. now, couple things, the dogs at spca are getting a special thanksgiving dinner from best friend willow grove and that will be on tuesday for them but they know what not to do. no turkey skin. no gravy. in buttered vegetables, no onions. no string around the turkey. that is kind of thing that people in their houses will have a problem with their pets. keep that food pushed back from the counter because these are most well behaved pets with mayhem at thanksgiving, they are going to jump up, they will get this food, they will rule age through garbage, that is a problem. give them their regular food, give them a safe place to be. >> no table scraps at all. >> if you give them one sliver of turning which no skin, that is more than you should do. don't give into their beautiful brown eyes begging you for food. >> i know. >> because pancreas problem
