travel day in almost a decade. good afternoon everyone i'm jessica dean. i'm ukee washington. first we are following breaking news along amtrak's northeast corridor in delaware that is affecting services is. >> chopper three near churchman's crossing in newark where we're told a pedestrian was hit and killed by a train, and that happened around 3:30 this afternoon. service was temporarily suspended between newark and wilmington, it was just restored about 15 minutes ago. so rail riders can expect some residual delays, and also congestion, in both directions. no injuries on the train have been reported. >> we have team three coverage to help you navigate on this getaway day. lets begin with "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff over at 30th street station and alex, how are things looking there, all aboard. >> reporter: we do want to give you an up kate on this incident around 3:30 this afternoon when a regional rail train traveling between washington and boss to be struck a trespasser, that was on the track, now no one else

was injured in, this but it did add significant delays to an already very busy, travel day. this added congestion and confusion, stems from a person struck and killed on a regional rail line in delaware. all trains, including amtrak both northbound and southbound are dealing with significant delays because of the investigation. all railways between wilmington and newark, delaware are currently on stand still and impacting travel up and down the line. some passengers have been attempting to switch trains to try to maneuver shorter wait times but over all the atmosphere is simply that of a collective headache. even so everyone we spoke with has taken the attitude that reflects the holiday no the matter how long it the takes most passengers are in route to see family and for that they remain thankful. >> i'm doing best i can to stay happy, it is thanksgiving and to be thankful, yeah. >> reporter: well, it is a good attitude, as we mentioned we have learned that services between wilmington and newark has been restored but they are just operated on one track, of

the delays, they are still expect. reporting live from 30th street stational is a contract hoff, for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". many drivers are on their way to their thanksgiving destinations tonight. chopper three is live over the vine street express waste in philadelphia where it the meets the schuylkill expressway, brake lights are on your right, headlights on the left, it is jammed, very busy road, busy skies too our justin drabick is live at philadelphia international airport with the check on the travel status there, justin. >> reporter: i have some good news. things are looking good here at philadelphia international airport. pretty much all day long. look at that behind me, security lines, nobody in it. i'm taking credit for this one. it is all about the weather, keeping storm system out of here. so far, so good. that is what we are dealing with, and i think a lot of folks are happy because they are heading out of town to check out friend, family and enjoying a nice holiday. no major delays, departures and arrivals. different story as you saw on the roads, getting to the airport that will be the

problem, check it out, here are your speeds, really down, less than 25 miles an hour on area roads. schuylkill is a mess in both directions now down less than 10 miles per hour around route one, both northbound and southbound on the blue route it will be slow, new jersey turnpike, 295 also on the slow side. just south of the city 95 southward heading toward the blue route we are slow, less than 25 miles an hour. certainly a crawl. in the skies, yes, it will be a busy weekend. 3.7 million americans are expect to fly over the holiday weekend. if you are heading out of the town and in the skies you might want to pack some patients. steady flow of passengers are passing through philadelphia international on one of the busiest travel days of the the year. fog and stormy weather in other parts of the country caused delays earlier today, but for the most part it has been smooth sailing. madeline is flying to palm springs and she says it wasn't so bad. >> there were not a lot of lines, not as many people as i thought though. >> reporter: no matter whiz terminal you picked lines were

long earlier today but by this afternoon it eased up a bit. most of the passengers we have talk to say biggest backup they have experienced was just getting to the airport. >> i thought it might be crowded, and delays, because it is thanksgiving so i got here kind of early. >> reporter: what with traveling getting here. >> it was awful. >> we arrived three hours early in preparation for the long lines, but that are not here. >> reporter: forty-three and a half million americans expected to travel more than 50 miles, this holiday weekend, so rough outing on the road. it will be rough here in the skies. terminal c here again, lines looking g it comes in waves. so far, so good, smooth sailing. i mentioned weather, pretty dry now but that will change tomorrow. we will bring some is rain in here and for that forecast on thanksgiving day let's send it back to the studio with katie. >> thanks, justin. it looks quiet at the airport if you roads are looking messy. i can see streets in center city not looking too hot

venturing out tonight. weather has been great for traveling today though, cool, dry, not too windy, and that is the case this evening as well. the here's a quick look at how it is feeling outside, little chilly, 47 degrees in philadelphia. forty-one in allentown. forty-five in trenton. i want to draw your attention to mount pocono where it is currently sitting at freezing mark and as we switch over to storm scan three look at why that may be concerning here this evening. we have got our system moving this way but out ahead of the main push there is a little warm front that is dragging itself through central pennsylvania. it doesn't have a lot of moisture witt but notice these showers are holding together even down into portions of virginia and maryland. if those showers do get in overnight, the poconos, northern lehigh valley where temperatures are at or below freezing you could be dealing with slick spots. main push of the showers back over indiana right now, that is what will come through for us tomorrow though, it should weaken by that point. a stray shower here or there overnight, then as we head into the daze tomorrow, that is when we will start toe showers, becoming a bit more numerous. not a total wash out, not a

steady driving rain all day but scattered showers around through your thanksgiving dinner time, and again, tonight in the poconos if you are in the northern, lehigh valley, there will be a chance that some of that rain freezing on contact, a few slick spots so take it the easy overnight and into tomorrow morning in the far northern parts of the region. coming up we will talk more burr thanksgiving holiday outlook drug is including the rest of the weekend but for now we will send it back in the studio. >> thanks very much. we have you covered on your way to your holiday destinations. head to cbs philly.com for more thanksgiving weekend travel tips. preparations are underway in new york city for annual thanksgiving day parade and that includes protecting tens of thousands of spectators and the traveling public, nationwide, this holiday. the fbi has alerted law enforcement across the country there is concern, for a potential terror attack. paul seeingal lives near the start of the new york's thanksgiving day parade but this year he will feel safer then ever. >> i see how hard, how vigilant, police are, and i

see how they go out of their way to make us feel safe. >> reporter: nation's largest police force is securing the route with concrete barriers, bomb sniffing dogs and officers, both in uniform and plainclothes. while there is no specific or credible threat the fbi has alerted authorities that it is concerned about the potential for an attack. >> it is just really scary no matter what precautions, you know, i'm glad that they are thinking ahead. >> reporter: new this year more than 80 dump trucks like these will be filled with sand to block intersections. >> you can ram a new york city sanitation department sand truck, but you will not move it. >> reporter: for the first time in 90 years police are banning vehicles from crossing a parade route along the half mile stretch but concern is not limited to new york city. transportation hubs across the u.s. are also on alert. >> we're always concerned and in large travel periods a concern when you have large gatherings of individuals. >> reporter: some visitors say they are not letting those

concerns ruin their thanksgiving holiday. >> i think if you are scared, you live in that fear and then you don't go out into the world, then they win. >> reporter: law enforcement officials are urging people to say something if they see something suspicious. today president-elect donald trump announced his first two female cabinet picks. south carolina governor nikki haley says she's accepting trump's offer to be u.s. ambassador to the united nations n a statement the president-elect praised governor haley says she has a proven track record of bringing people together. nikki haley is 44 years old. she won election to the governor's post as part of the tea party wave in 2010. haley was an out spoken trump critic through much of the presidential election race. she's daughter of indian immigrants. president-elect also picked betsy devos to head the department of education today. devos is a school choice activist and top republican donor. trump met with her over weekend, devos chairs the american federation for children, a group that

a mysterious flash of light in the sky had plenty of people talking, and at least, three southern states. dash cam or video from two patrol cars in north port, florida captured a fireball streaking across the sky monday night. american meteor society said it received more than 150 reports of that event. fireball was spotted primarily in florida but some people witnessed it as far away as alabama and georgia. as you gather with friends and family tomorrow politics might be off limits but cooking safety should be front and center. there are more cooking fires on thanksgiving day then any other, day of the year, three on your side jim donovan shows you how to stay safe while making your thanksgiving meal. >> reporter: this is one of the many turkey mishaps, fire safety experts want you to avoid this thanksgiving.

fire fighters, respond to as many as 1400 cooking fires, on thanksgiving, that is more than three times the average of any other day during the year. >> so this is, my skin graft, it is in the process of healing right the now. >> reporter: it is an lesson evelyn fernandes learned the hard way when she left a combustible can between her stove burners while making dinner for her family. >> the pam spray exploded which caused it the to explode, and i felt the flames hit my face. >> reporter: after multiple surgeries and a month in the the hospital, evelyn is still dealing with physical and emotional scars. let's talk turkey safety no matter how distracted you are this holiday experts say when in the kitchen always pay attention. unattended cooking is leading cause of house fires. >> if you have to leave the kitchen, call in reenforcement, a iron somebody to keep an eye on the cooking at all times.

>> reporter: never doubt cooking fire with water or flower, instead, this fire fighters placed another pan on top of the fire to extinguish the flames. and if you like to deep friseur turkey make sure it the is away from your house, don't put it on a porch or a garage. the turkey should be defrosted and padded dry, don't ever fill your oil and make sure you check the temperature frequently. golden rule says experts never walk away while you are cooking. fire officials say you should keep surfaces free from grease build up and keep flammable cans and items like potholedders, paper towels away from stoves and ovens. the reporting for three on your side, i'm jim donovan. >> great information, indeed. >> someone who loves cooking a southern california teen has big dreams to build a cooking empire, and inspire others with autism to live independent lives. >> it is time for another episode of safe in your face. >> reporter: chase bailey has his own cooking show, with tens of thousands of viewers and celebrity guests and he just came out with his first

cookbook. >> a lot of people with autism like they might think they are not the that much, but if i were to like inspire those kids, they might like conquer those challenges. >> reporter: my man. bailey has a foundation called chase your dreams foundation, half of the proceeds from the sale of his cookbook will be used for grant to help people with autism receive education and vocational training. meteorologist kate bilo is back inside now and joining us with a look at the thanksgiving day forecast. of course, traveling in the next 24 hours, people all looking to see what it will be like. >> if you wait until last mini know people try to put off travel until thanksgiving day because roads tend to be quiet to get out, if you eat later, tomorrow though, there could be some issues just a few, couple of showers here and there, not the worst day we have ever had. certainly not worstt day we thanksgiving we have ever had but best chance for rain in the seven day forecast, really comes tomorrow and then again into next week, tuesday or

wednesday. but first we have got to talk about tomorrow, because we will see some showers start to move in. tonight, it is quiet, but that will change a witt. here's a look outside to one of our live neighborhood network sites. the reason i picked this again i showed you it past two nights and we had beautiful sunset will colors here. remember 5:15 we had pink, purple, we are not seeing that tonight. reason for that is clouds have moved in, after a beautiful day, that increase in clouds we talked about yesterday, has finally happened, and big cloud bank moving in on the western horizon and now the clouds are in, and that is heralding the arrival of the next system which will be bringing showers for thanksgiving day. it was a cold morning today. wanted to recap this. we did hit freezing this morning, average low for today's date 37. this is first time reaching freezing, since april 10th, and you may have felt it out there i went outside and said yep, i'm pretty sure we made it. definitely got down to freezing this morning. problem is overnight tonight even though cloud will move in and we will keep up here in the philadelphia area well above freezing, up in the

poconos and lehigh valley, temperatures, just heading toward freezing overnight. while the main push of the showers, is still way back over the midwest, this little warm front trying to activate through portions of central, pennsylvania and into maryland. it is starting to fizzle a little bit but if any showers get the in to our far northern regions overnight there will be threat for light freezing rain especially on elevated surfaces like bridges, overpasses so do watch out tomorrow morning for a few isolated slick spots. otherwise this front moving in and as you can see model kills it as it moves n it doesn't look like a whole lot with it but cannot rule out a few scattered showers at anytime through the day tomorrow, temperatures are pretty seasonal in the the lower 50's. lets take you all across the country. getting on a plane tonight, tomorrow traveling thanksgiving day, showers buffalo, cleveland, washington d.c. philadelphia will see clouds and sunshine. we have nicer weather to the south, 74 in houston. seventy-five in new orleans. looking nice there to the north we will go with cloud, and chilly conditions, chicago at the 40, minneapolis cloudy

at 35 degrees, for thanksgiving day, and then, western part of the country, problems possible in the seattle heading out to seatack tomorrow but rest of quiet. salt lake city in denver are chilly. los angeles looks great. san francisco looking pretty nice as well. so northeast, just a few shower problems tomorrow but otherwise it is a pretty quiet thanksgiving day across much of the nation. for your thursday, mostly cloudy, couple scattered showers, again, not a total wash out of a day, not the worst day we have ever had by a long shot but if you do have plans to be outside. i know my family used to do a big flag football game in the yard, you may be dodging rain drops. friday, cloud, a few breaks of sun at 55 and saturday looks good. we're seasonal, quiet, most of the holiday weekend which is great news for shoppers, travelers and football players. >> yes, that is right. >> thanks, kate. spirits of the thanksgiving was on display at chosen 300 ministries. thanksgiving day necessities

nelson agholor. coach pederson felt a conversation was necessary after agholor's game in the salt and his eye brow raising, post game, comments. agholor said that he did his own head at this point. after the meeting the question is, will he play monday night against green bay? >> i just got to see from his standpoint like, you know, how he handles this week. this will be a big week. how he handles it mentally, how he reacts with his team hates and how he reacts on the practice field with the things that have sort of, you know, fallen in his lap. so it is just how well he respond. >> so wait and see approach. agholor struggling at a time when eagles need a play maker on the outside. on sunday he dropped a 25-yard pass pie carson wentz but rookie qb is encouraging the 2015, first round draft pick, to stay upbeat.

getting out of town, millions of americans are hitting the friendly skies and the rails, for this thanksgiving holiday. triple a says almost 3.7 million people are expected to fly, and amtrak says that three-quarters of a million passengers will travel by train. and roads are expected to be the busiest of them all chopper three is live over i-95 area near girard avenue

in philadelphia, headlights are coming south toward center city, and it is jammed going in and out of the city. we're right between two and 7:00. experts estimate 89 percent of holiday travelers will pack up their car and hit the road this year. the news continues at 5:30, good evening, i'm ukee washington. aim jessica dean. thanksgiving brings family and friend together over a nice turkey dinner but first come preparations and not everyone is ready. >> "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden went to the delaware county supermarket where shoppers got started on the last minute list. >> excuse me. >> reporter: midday wednesday a lull in the action at area supermarkets. >> we are very well stocked, ready to go. >> reporter: they expected to get hammered later in the day, there are shoppers with short lists for last minute odds and end and then there is marathon crowd picking up everything, from soup to nuts. >> happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: while on our trip to the acme in havertown we

met colleen moran from broomall. >> i'm here to pick up a turkey breast. >> reporter: colleen had a tall list. >> getting our turkey, side, stuffing, mashed potatoes. >> reporter: here's the catch. colleen is a home care nurse. she's shopping for her nine three-year old patient. >> she does not have any family so it is the good thing to do. >> reporter: matt geary from havertown was in the same boat as colleen, shopping for sisters of charity in norristown. >> every year, for about 20 years now, i have been going out to norristown with a small portion of the meal, something that can be prepared that day. >> reporter: acme manager paul mullens say day before thanksgiving is in the the top five busiest but when is the store most crowded? >> maybe right after the dinner hour, everybody will come out, whoever did shop monday, tuesday, wednesday, and tonight will be very busy. >> reporter: in this store selfless acts of kindness. >> thank you. >> you're welcome. >> reporter: they long way for those who wouldn't otherwise have that traditional meal.

>> i think it is nice to do, something nice for someone. it makes you feel better about yourself. >> reporter: on this last day before thanksgiving the manager hearsays it is not just people out picking up small odd and end, folks are here doing their full trip for thanksgiving, that is something that he says are not used to seeing. in havertown, joe holden for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". annual thanksgiving tradition continues at the white house today, national thanksgiving turkey tatters and tot were pardoned by president obama during a special ceremony. president was joined by his two nephews, this is final turkey pardon of his presidency. tatter and tot will live out their days in the farm in virginia. authorities say a forest fire on mount penn in reading appears to have been intentionally set. take a look at the video provided by reading magazine, the pennsylvania department of conservation and natural resources, calls the monday night fire, suspicious. there were no injuries, or

damage to homes or businesses but the fire scorched 47 acres of forest. "eyewitness news" is dedicated to bringing you store business science, technology, engineering and math. >> tonight in our einstein health care network science center record cleve bryan takes us to stockton university where they were it ising fires, on purpose, it is part of the university's forest management plan. >> reporter: well, it may look odd to see members of the forest fire service setting fire, rather than putting them out a controlled burn is exactly how you prevent a wild fire. >> controlled burning removes the pine needles and leaf litter off the forest floor and it helps prevent forest fires from starting. >> reporter: controlled or prescribed burns, date back to the native americans. but they have a way of reinventing things, entire. this controlled burn is on the campus of the stockton university known as the college in the pines, the school has a ten year forest

management program that includes different methods of logging and burning to protect the school and act as a forest fire lab to say the best waste professionals can use controlled burns to manage forest. >> sensor readings, of multiple fires setting up in multiple different areas where we have a clear cut, a thinning, and a control area. >> reporter: 1508 degrees, students are taking these measures of the temperatures within the fire to try to determine what is the best twi do control burns. one of the reasons this research is so important is climate change. experts predict that the earth continues to warm weather patterns will be more dangerous, and droughts will be more severe, possibly causing forest fires to be more catastrophic, and new jersey is both heavily populated and heavily forested, and potentially deadly combination. >> we want a much more diverse forest, we want a forest more resilient in case of disturbances and bottom line is we'd like to row tech from catastrophic fire and disease. >> reporter: experts say new jersey's forest will look different in the coming

government is taking action to crackdown on distracted drivers, the national highway traffic safety administration, wants smart phone makers to lock out most apps when the phonies being used behind the wheel. drivers would still be able to make calls, but this proposed system will lock out ability for someone to enter text. agency says last year 10 percent of fatal crashes involved distract drivers. it wasn't a thanksgiving meal but it was quite the gathering to day in philadelphia. "eyewitness news" at lincoln financial field for annual philadelphia convention and visitors bureau lunchin. mayor jim kenney was among speakers. lunch honors more than 1,000

time of the year. here's a quick look what is happening right now outside. storm scan one shows us again, i'm concerned about, you can see a few light showers, have popped up, over berks county a lot of this probably not reaching the ground, and it is starting to fizzle out but it is holding together pretty well here. this is a warm front. it is moving through portions of central pennsylvania right now, along the i80 corridor, and if this helds together, and moves through our far northern areas like the poconos and northern lehigh valleys, is there a chance for a few isolated icy spots overnight. and otherwise, the main input of that storm will come through tomorrow afternoon. it will weaken by the time it gets here. here's what it looks like. 6:00 o'clock tomorrow morning we will start the day with cloud, maybe even a few early breaks have of sun and you can see this particular model doesn't bring a lot of rain in. 10:00 a.m. a few scattered showers. maybe snow flakes in the poconos. scattered showers at 1:00. not a complete wash out. and then by three or four or 5:00 a few scattered showers before it clears out and we will see some sun trying to break through during the day

turkey games. >> yeah. >> reporter: second annual turkey games for springfield high school will this delaware county. where 251 players, including 130 syringe field alumni are laying flag football games all day, and having a ball. but you cannot call a flag on these kid for just having a good time because they are tossing aside a day of their thanksgiving break to give back to their community. >> these are guys i played with at high school. >> reporter: alex, a sophomore business major at penn state came up with the idea of turkey games last year. >> i was a freshman in college, and we had not seen each other in a long time. we said let's play flag football tournament. if we can raise money why not. >> people in our area we get overlooked, we don't really give back that often. so if we have an opportunity we can bring people together. >> reporter: this good ago turned into a five dollars admission to play. all going towards the turkey fund which helps those less fortunate in the springfield

township, and morton township community. >> one, two, three. >> reporter: to pull off this feat he teamed up with mrs. clemente, his high school math teacher. >> he said hey, mrs. c, i know you do a lot with the turkey fund. i want to give back. i get chills thinking about that because this was a college freshman. >> right. >> nineteen years old. how many 19 years olds do you know have the wherewithal to say i want to give back. i know there are people in the community where i grew up, they don't have enough to eat, they don't have warm clothes, they don't have what their kids need to go to school, backpacks, supplies, to go to school. iowa than the to give back to make sure that happens. >> reporter: last year they raised close to $2,500, and this year they expect to raise, close to 9,000. >> how does it feel to know that your one idea has grown into something that will be continued on, annually. >> awesome, awesome. as long as we can keep raising money for the family is all i care about. >> reporter: just so you know giving doesn't stop on game day. founder of the turkey games

this time of the year it is not uncommon to see people delivering food to the homeless. today outside city hall we caught up with a college student who figured out a great plan, to help feed, those in need. >> hello there, sir. >> reporter: temple freshman aaron ray. >> would you like some food. >> reporter: a group of friend are delivering breakfast and smiles, in center city. giving out packages of cereals, water to people he find living on the streets. >> it is just like a humbling experience. >> reporter: aaron ray didn't buy this food at a store, he has a campus meal plan card. he never uses it all so he is giving away the extra. he calls it swipes for philadelphia. >> each meal swipe i get four packages of cereals. >> reporter: it adds up over just a few weeks he collect dozens of packages of cereals. he and his friend purchase big package of water to give away also. >> what better way to spend our break then to give back w

"eyewitness news" reporter greg argos is live with one of the stores affected, greg. >> reporter: good afternoon, good evening, you guys, with extended family in town you might already been thinking about having that drink before a big chunk of the afternoon it was very hard to purchase wine or liquor at state run stores. that is because you credit card system at these stores went down. now take a look right there we are showing you video from our very own joe holden from havertown where workers put the cash only sign up, to warn customers picking up that last minute bottle of wine. here at the state wine fine wine and good spirits store in center city near 20th and market, the line wrapped around the store. the customers say the credit card system started to come back on line around 5:00 o'clock but it has been a long wait for many. spokesperson for the pennsylvania liquor control board says that their credit card system was flooded with transactions between three and 4:00 this afternoon, essentially overloaded inn and had to be
